    I completely agree with you guys about the training stuff in the show and the book. The show was arguably worse for me, though. That Zoya/Alina scene was so random and out of place with everything else since there was no other hand-to-hand fighting. I also wanted more development between her and Baghra.

    I would love to see y'all read Six of Crows! They were my favourite part of the show as well. Chan I know you said Kanej didn't really pay off for you in the end but I think that's the point. They are a couple that are super subtle and delicate and needed to be treated very gently because of their similar trauma (in terms of touch). After Rule of Wolves, there should be another SoC book which will most likely have the Kanej ending we all deserve.

      From what I remember of the end of Crooked Kingdom, there are some dangling storylines with Nina and Inej (though maybe some of the Nina stuff gets fleshed out in King of Scars/Rule of Wolves -- I don't remember what happens in the former and have yet to read the latter). It would be amazing to see a final installment that turns the SoC duology into a full trilogy.

    • @MeeshaK

      @@iyah1046 Yeah you will have to read Rule of Wolves first. I don't want to spoil anything. But from that ending there should be another heist, just don't know how long it will take.

      @taylorgayhart9497 3 роки тому +4

      She does get tested in the books! I don’t remember the details but yes she is suppressing her powers and that’s why she is always tired, sickly, and can’t eat. Once she starts using her powers she sleeps better, and gets fro her and healthier. It’s either stated or implied that her sickly state was due to the energy it took to suppress her powers.

      Actually, I think you're all kind of right lol. They did get tested but I didn't read it so much as "she knew she had powers and tried to hide them her whole childhood" but rather she didn't want to discover she had them when she was tested, stifled them unknowingly, and never discovered them until The Great Skiv Incident with Mal.

      Also in the rest of books it is expanded on that they are drawn together because of their powers. She feels like she can be powerful with him, that she is allowed to want to use her power. He draws on her darkness and selfishness and makes it feel justified for her.

    In the book Alina suppresses her power when being tested by the Grisha, that's why she didn't know. The reason for the scar on her hand is explained in the second book and is unrelated to her powers as Grisha! So the show made a slight change there, but I thought it came out even better :)

    Yessss I too think she secretly knew like her entire arc in shadow & bone is that she can't summon her power bc she's suppressed them fearing it would separate her from Mal, her life line and slowly as she starts to let go of him under the darkling's influence, she stops pushing down her power and becoming who she'd been her whole life, this leading to the major conflict between mal and Alina

    1st episode was strong storytelling but the rest got a bit muddled for me and forcing both S&B and SOC into the same timeline didn't mesh well. Alina's story felt too grand for the Crows (despite them being my fave part of the show). The Crows showoff with the Grisha definitely helped this but I still dont feel any real connection between the two groups (Alina/Mal and Kaz/Inej/Jesper) at the end. I didn’t get the sense they really needed each other.
    And the Nina/Matthias plot line (despite how cute though insta-love this was) could have been excluded completely without any impact to the main plot.
    Great ideas and beautiful production design but overall a disjointed story.
    However will I watch S2....um, yes.

    I think it's interesting that Leigh Bardugo did script writing previously, and it made sense reading the first book she wrote, that it reads more like a script. You have to pick up in a really detailed way what it would have looked like, and go to an outside perspective to realise what actually happened vs what Alina thinks. The show *shows you* and displays the characters better than the books, although the Darkling is way more sympathetic in the show.

    I'm really surprised he "liked" this one, I read shadow and bone for the first time this year and I hate it lol (and I like most of the other ones that you guys read), It's like..... I like the magic but in the book, I hated all the characters and I feel like this book has a lot of problems that people don't talk about (but talk in other books about how this or that is problematic which is good, but why not in this book? why only in books that are famous to hate?), maybe I just don't feel Leigh B writing (because I didn't enjoy ninth house either) but I'm really liking the show

    Soon after I read the books in high school, I kept wondering if the Darkling or the Apparat were based on Rasputin or both. I think another booktuber mentioned that.
