    The casting for the Crows was perfect! The actress for Inej literally came straight out of my mind! I did wish we got to see more of Kaz's lockpicking/pitpocketing skills tho... considering it's a huge part of what makes him a good criminal

      @@mayallyourbaconburn7133 Honestly my only problem with the show is its writing of Kaz, Kanej and Zoya.
      Kaz is not a grumpy cat. He is actually kinda arrogant and cocky. He calls girls love and sweet in the beginning of soc. Here he just hardly had any good dialogues.
      And the once he had were super out of character. 'I need you', 'I believe in you', 'no saints watched over me not like you have'. I can't even imagine Kaz saying these corny ass shit. I mean the dialogues are good but they are nothing like something Kaz would say.
      Also what was the hurry to establish Kaz and Inej as a potential couple in the very first episode. It was so unnecessary.

      @@perfectillusionist320 I agree with the second part but on the first part you said "at the beginning of soc" but we have to remember that this part we're seeing wasn't written anywhere, they don't exactly have source material, and it is before soc, so I believe when we get to their part it will be better

    • @shineon6584
      @shineon6584 3 роки тому +1

      @@anabrito2582But the thing is, just because it's a prequel, doesn't mean it's a good excuse for the writing to be out of character though- especially when Inej and Jesper on the other hand are seemingly well adjusted into their characterization. I mean I get adaptations aren't going to be identical to the books, but I think creating "fanfiction" for the Crows altered their characterization the most (in not a good way), so I'm looking forward to them finally getting to the soc storyline where they'll actually have source material!

    • @shineon6584
      @shineon6584 3 роки тому +3

      @@perfectillusionist320 Yeah, I've heard from some non-readers that Kaz kind of comes across as dull... I think that can be attributed to them not really incorporating his dark humor and cool skills. I adored the actor though, so I let's hope they give him better stuff to work with in the future.
      To your second point: Oh gosh, yeah that's true... He can barely even admit his feelings to her at the end of soc, so that bonfire scene was kind of ooc?? Lol. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the inclusion of the Crows, but damn there are so many tiny things that were ooc for the characters/ships you listed off.

    Knife Wife for Life.
    Also, Kirigan is a pretty interesting character. He manipulates Alina into trusting him and relying on him, but in the show (I haven't read the books) I don't think he tries to manipulate her into falling for him. He seems genuinely surprised that she kisses him. He wanted to control her for her power, but he finds himself genuinely drawn to her. She's someone who he could actually form a long term (for him) relationship with. He's very jealous of her relationship with Mal. When she realizes his manipulations and turns away from him, he decides to just go ahead and enslave her rather than treat her as an equal. That's very revelatory.
    I have no judgement towards those who enjoy Alina's initial steamy romance with Kirigan, but I don't really understand continuing to want them together in the future. He has seriously abused Alina. It's not a relationship that could be called romantic anymore.

      Like I hear u totally, but what I have in my brain is a deep need for fanfics where he doesn't turn all ass and they do become an equal forever power couple and she balances his evil. Cuz like through ages of storytelling the story now with this triangle of Darkling evil, Mal good, good over evil is like rly common. But good and evil in a couple balanced forever (or a very long time) and him getting healed instead of hurt and abusive would have been interesting. (and like in the fanfic dreams later on they banish the fold and he's like not as evil cuz she won't let him and he's never evil to her, but like he still wants to be evil and is like more to that side, like she literally balances the scale) It's the fanfic I want and nothing can make me stop wanting it, I wanted it when I first read it in high school. That's how I ship them, like in an alternate universe equal power duo sense.

      @TacticusPrime 3 роки тому +6

      @@123Saulytea Wait, he's still evil and she's still good, but somehow they are still in a relationship? Evil and good are not like introverted and extroverted. Being in a relationship with a mass murderer is not OK, no matter how nice he might be to YOU. That's crazy.

      For me, it sucks EVEN MORE that people liked him and Alina together in the book (I will not say DARKLINA, even if my life depended on it since he deserves to burn in the depths of hell). :) I'm pretty young, but Ms. Leigh OBVIOUSLY wrote his character to be the "master manipulator" type, and it makes sense for some to be initially attracted to that.
      But otherwise, all of his decisions towards Alina are pretty calculated and utterly self-serving, and that's illustrated in the show towards the end as well. I WILL admit that they had chemistry (duh), but the Darkling's dumbass managed to catch feelings while trying to take over the world.
      ALSO:
      MALINA 'TIL I DIE. MAL HAS SOOOO MUCH MORE NUANCE IN THE BOOK THAN PEOPLE KNOW. Please know that this is my personality trait. :)

    As someone who hasn’t read the Shadow and Bone trilogy but absolutely loved the Six of Crows duology, I had a ball with the tv show! I almost think that by not having read Shadow and Bine, I could enjoy Alina and Mal’s part of the story more as I didn’t know what would happen and I really enjoyed their relationship (I’ve also heard not great things about the characters in the books). My only complaint is that I would have loved to see more of the Crows, but hopefully we’ll get more next season.

    I feel like I love love loved the crows parts of the show. Butttt when it comes to the grisha parts I feel like they rushed everything. Like I don’t think they even ever talked about the amplifier and I feel like if I hadn’t read the books I would’ve been so confused. They didn’t get to dive into anything because they tried to fit so much in. I love mal in the books and I really liked his character in the show. I wish they could’ve dived more into Alina learning more bc that’s how we learned things in the book and we didn’t learn a whole lot in the show. The way they changed how the amplifier wigged me out oh my goodness. The darkling was so good at making me hate him. Nina and Mattias were really good but their story was so disconnected until the last minute.
    I can’t wait to see season 2!

    I watched Shadow and Bone having only read Six of Crows yeaaaars ago and not remembering anything about it. So I went into basically blind to the world. I also knew the basics of the characters like Kaz and Inej and also knew the Darkling was intriguing to a lot of people.
    And i absolutely LOVED the show, it's my new obsession. The one thing I would say though I wish there had been a map (longer than the glimpse we had). I had to Google the Grisha map to understand the itinerary of the Crows and where was the Fold, who were Fjerdans and Shu Hans etc. And I agree with John about the keftas, having not read Shadow and Bone I was confused as to why there were different colors, why was Alina blue.
    Overall it did make me want to re-read the Six of Crows duology (I am less interested in Alina's story than I am the Crows).

I loved Pekka Rollins too ! I can't wait to see what they are going to do with him and Kaz but the scenes were really promising !
    The Darkling does control her power but he doesn't need a piece of the amplifier are to touch her to do it, they are just connected now because he killed the stag but she saved his life.
    And yes Jesper was really perfect !!! Ben Barnes too, and all the cast was really great I think but Kit and Ben just blew my mind !
    Will/have you read King of scars and Rule of wolves ?

    Funnily enough, I wonder if people would have a better time reading SoC after watching S&B seeing as the show basically turns the SoC plot into a prequel for the story of the actual duology (which I assume will begin in s2)
    I watched the show with my mother who has never even heard of the books and seeing her a little confused as to what the different Grisha powers met as well as the general geography of the world makes me wonder if they should have done a better job with that. I actually brought my copy down to show her the map of Ravka and where it was in relation to the fold/Kerch etc. But whereas the books provide you with pretty good detail (even if it's not all at once) as to the order of the Grisha and what the various levels of their powers are, even as a reader myself I found myself waiting for similar moments in the show and they never came. I can't even imagine how a show-only person would understand the differences between a duras and an alkemi, a heartrender and a healer etc etc. At the end of the day it's mostly lore rather than essential to understanding the plot but the lore behind the Grisha powers is so rich and it informs so much of the social structure and who is more important that it's a shame it wasn't explained a little clearer. We just had people referring to themselves as "squaller" "heartrender" etc or Kaz correcting the man who called them "grisha witches" by telling him they're called "fabrikators" which is only one of seven different kinds of Grisha. It's probably my ONLY gripe with the entire show and I guess it's one of those things that you go along for the ride and you just don't know what you don't know.
    I can't wait for season 2 to see what they do with the Crows and who might be introduced!!!!!

The only thing that I felt was a little bit 'weird' (except for not getting to see Alina really train in the little palace) was that Alina's face lit up when she used the powers, while the Darkling's didn't. I just started rereading Siege and Storm, and to answer why couldn't they just go over it, cuz I think they haven't reached that kind of technology yet. Nikolai's Hummingbird is still very reliant on squallers to lift up the airship and I think they just don't have the manpower to have that. and the Darkling basically doesn't really support the Materialnik that much, unlike Nikolai.

    I loved the show! I was so scared going in because I’ve been so horrible let down by other adaptations, specially Shadowhunters, but they did wonderful, in my opinion!! Though I have to say, as they were some of my favorite characters in the book, Kaz and Inej were a let down for me. That mushy line he said in the last episode was so out of character. I distinctly remember Kaz saying something like “anyone can be replaced, even you” in the first book. Kaz would never show that he needed anybody. Other than those two, it was a very solid show!
    Also, the fold does go forever up. Even Nikolai had to cross it when using his flying ship.

    Solid casting, and I agree that some things should have slowed down.
    The one thing that really bothered me was Kaz. The actor was great and several of his scenes were awesome. However, I felt like they sped through his character arc. Like, they got to the end of his arc by the end of the first season without even fully showing the struggle. He flat out tells Inej that she's important to him, whereas he frustratingly REFUSED to admit that forecer in the books. And I was really mad when the Conductor stole Kaz's thunder. Kaz's one super cool moment was during the Alina doubles thing. Other than that he didn't come across as conniving and morally grey and scarily clever. I hope with the new season they'll showcase that more, but I don't know what they'll do about the fact that they've weakened his internal conflict. Maybe if they had treated his relationship with Inej as pre-Sux of Crows, we could have seen their relationship build instead of evolve from a starting point that wasn't well established.
    That said, this show is AWESOME.
