I think this video answers the question "what techno is about" To me, a fellow classic rock/indie/instrumental music enjoyer, it has opened a whole new genre to explore Thank you
Really appreciate this type of tutorial. It’s very thoughtful and in depth and compared to others, actually helps in understanding in what’s going on with foreign software and hardware. I use FL and no hardware but feel like I could use ableton and your gear and start playing straight away. Keep doing this and you might help lots of us.
what i love about ableton as someone that has no musical talent is how straight forward it is. FL felt like everything was hidden in menus and was more about graphics
This video was great. Made my own little techno song in about half an hour after watching and I’m just having a blast twisting the knobs and screwing around
Thanks for showcasing this workflow technique. 'live' creation and editing of the tunes is just way more intuitive for me compared to the 'use mouse n keyboard to draw out some random midi stuff'.
Man this was so helpful. Thank you so much! Its funny how when you don't know what you don't know, it makes it so hard to fill in the gaps. This filled in some gaps that have caused me so much discouragement in my learning process. Thank you so much! Liked and subscribed! I hope I can find more help from you!
Excellent video on the basics of techno. The real essence is the basics which you described so well, from then on it’s your souls that makes the machines talk. Thanks so much Justine 🙏 Do you have a similar tutorial with 4/4 style Cheers
I think your explanation is the best for amateurs that want to start composing music. You made it straight to the point and helped show that it is actually doable. Just one question that comes to mind: Is this the Ableton Live software that you are using?
man its a nice groove you got! the good amount of unusual time signature for each drum sample mixed with the traditional 4/4 and a dry ambiance It really shows youve been influenced by many kinds of artist and many genre
as a old f*rt who was in the first wave of techno it pleases me that there are young uns out there with such sensibilities as this young chap. It's not all Drum Code and female celebrity DJ's ya know. Low key...end the festivals...bring back the vibe.
usually the "bass" frequencies, this includes the kick and bass, you would like to be in mono not stereo , so by doing this u have a parallel processing where one way is the straight kick and then the effect over it. I dont know if that makes sense:))
Good video going over the basics, could you do a video with a more in depth dive into what makes techno, techno? Discussing on what the elements convey, and how we connect to such rhythms?
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing the creative process of creating a very rhythmic feel. You mentioned you were going for the rhythmic feel and would show 4 on the floor later to see how it’s a very different feel. Too bad the 4 on the floor example was missed. But we all know the 4 on the floor is stuck in our heads. So this was a refreshing change. Thanks for not adding clap, cowbell and whistle! Lol
Can we take a moment to appreciate the lightsabers in the background haha ? It put me right in the mood for an epic galactic video around techno :) Bravo !
Wow wasn´t expecting to find this much information in the video. This video is really focused on techno music. The video presents a really accurate workflow and creative process to achieve that techno feeling. Love it! suscribing now
@@mephisto212 sure. Detroit Techno it become genre on its own, but I guess all techno/electro/or even electronic vanguard was developed in Europe. German scene had huge impact on the movement and Krafwerk, or Tangerine Dream, are definitely the early icons, what at that stage was understod as Electronic Rock, rather than Tech vibes.
Just curious, Is this the way you write? When I get wrapped up in automation so early (in Logic Pro) and then continue making and moving things the software continually bugs me about moving automation/copying automation. I have to wait until the mixing stage or I go insane. I am guessing this was only for the sake of the video.
You should set your buffer as small as your computer can handle. It is going to vary from computer to computer and set to set. You can use the test tone / CPU usage simulator in the audio tab of the Prefs to find what works for you.

Brother I can´t stop watching the videos with Justin Beck. He has a lot of knowledge and good style. Thank you Master.
This is my fourth time rewatching this video and FINALLY I understand what you mean.

FL is good.

Wow, messing with the parameters of the chord stabs really brought that to life at the end!
Also, that part where you said techno doesn’t have to be four on the floor, I really really really appreciate that
Fun fact: Techno in its true form has no specific genre. It is a set of principles for unique electronic music creation. Basically, digital Jazz.
Amazing tutorial, though!
Thank you. It’s art
That along with Mills’ definition of Techno: The Sound of the Future.
Isn’t that what defines genres lol the style of principles used etc

I'm not sure why, but I read this video title as "Basics Of Techno With Lewis Black" and was really thrown for a loop. XD
Lewis Black loves two things. Telling it like it is, and educating people on the foundations of different genres of electronic music
Same. I thought I was going to get a techno lesson yelled at me for 10 minutes 🤣
That would be hilarious, I can hear him talking about it now!

Hell yeah, Belibat is an absolute king on the tr-8s
Great tutorial Lewis, thanks.

what makes techno techno, I like the sounds.

Great tutorial, thanks! Out of interest, how come you stacked the reverb for the kick in an effect rack, rather than set wet/dry to 50?

Start in Detroit? Always thought it was in Germany.
I know right? Sure detroit techno is a thing, but Kraftwerk was a thing before that. Autobahn came out in 1974?

Hi, What is the ableton theme you are using here? The colors are great
Its the dark mode. You can change it on preferences.

What buffer size is your ableton set to? How much latency are you getting when you track midi?
