delay can trick our brain to interpret a mono sound as being panned: say two speakers play the same sound, same intensity but one speaker is delayed.
the brain interprets the delay as the speaker being further away in space (later arrival time) and automatically turns the volume down for the delayed sound in accordance to how much it;s delayed :)
