@@youngsandwich2792how does that make it interesting? I grew up in the same town as Kim Kardashian but that doesn't make watching the Kardashians any less mind numbing
The "pressure" part in Squidward in Clarinetland always gave me chills. It feels like an analog horror thing, you don't understand what Patrick means but he is very scared.
I grew up watching the exorcist in kindergarten by choice. Nothing on SpongeBob could scare me. No Nickelodeon or Disney shows Halloween special was close to the stuff I was used to. The alone scene in sb-129 still sits in the back of my head as the creepiest thing I’ve seen. It was the first time I’ve ever thought about the concept of being in a void, alone. That’s scary
I had nightmares of white voids after that episode. The concept of not being able to distinguish wall or floor or where it began or ended, was terrifying.
Last year, I underwent a life or death lung surgery. I was on heavy medication, and my sister used to put cartoons on TV to make me feel better, I guess. Every time SpongeBob was on, I felt so stressed, like I didn't remember it being that creepy and weird.
Nasty Patty is really missing here. I feel like the show's pretty dark in this one. I also think "Have you seen this Snail?" belongs a mention here. I was really terrified as a kid when I found out the old Lady's goal was actually to eat Gary.
@@awespongebobooh I can't wait for that :o If you have the chance, please at least mention Vibingleaf, Rodrigo Jogos, Feridoodles6, and Lukinspire. They make really creepy (or at least impressive) SpongeBob Horror Content
IM GLAD SOMEONE ELSE AGREES NOSFARATU IS TERRIFYING!!!! I was absolutely horrified of that scene as a kid and id have to hide under my blankets when i knew it was coming. It wasnt as bad as the one where squidward falls in that hole to me though, those faces made me very nervous.

Season 9+ spongebob are made by adults who grew up with spongebob and are cluelessly trying emulate past episode without building any identity of their own
Honestly, I was never scared of any episode but i was definitely disturbed. The one with Flying Dutchman trapping them on his ship was giving some existencial dread. That's genuinely one of fates worse than death. Many episodes where characters get stuck in situations that can only be undone by the Status Quo are terrifying. Hell, sometimes the "character torture" episodes are horrible.
Glad I'm not the only one who was scared of Nosferatu as a kid. I never watched the original movie and he came kinda out of nowhere. Also totally agree with the episode being one of the Top 5. Its just so iconic.
Wasn't there an episode about some giant ball of gum turing alive and kinda eating everything? And then you have spongebob etc. fight it by diving into it or something? Barely remember but it sure made me feel weird as a kid. Great video as always!
Couple observations: In a couple of Squidward's clips, the horror happens to Squidward and his first reaction isn't fear, it's _annoyed resignation._ The two I noticed here are in Ghoul Fools where his response to the giant Spongebob is "I guess this is the part where I start screaming. DYAAAA," and again with the Necronomicon episode he sprouts all the eyes and his first response is just "Of course..." Conversely, the best horror (not best episodes, the best _horror_) to happen to Squidward happens in the slow psychological episodes - Squid's Visit and Clarinetland from this list. There's a few more not on this list there (SB-129 comes to mind). He's also shown as being pretty good at scaring Spongebob, like with Graveyard Shift where he comes up with the Hash Slinging Slasher story and Don't Look Now with his fisherman cosplay prank. Not really much else to say here though - like I said, just a couple observations.
4:03 I think Graveyard Shift actually got held back to sometime after alot of Season 3 episodes premiered here in the US (where the show is made ironically) because they could've been initially unsure if the appearance of Nosferatu was going to get them alot of complaints from parents. The Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies DVD that includes Graveyard Shift came out nearly 6 months before Graveyard Shift aired on Nickelodeon in the US.
Yes, the horror elements of this show can go way out there like in “Ghoul Fools.” I hope one day you can talk about the influence of Dan Povenmire on this show and how he helped write some of the most memorable episodes ever and compare his work on SpongeBob to later and earlier projects like Phineas and Ferb, Rocko and Family Guy.
Necronomicon showing up in SpongeBob is wild. At this rate were going to have a full blown "Cuthullu in Bikini Bottom" episode with how popular Lovecraftian horror is becoming + the writer's increasing lack of things to make new episodes about.
I always appreciated "Rock Bottom" and "Nasty Patty" for having some creepy/thrilling moments. When I think about it rock bottom has some Lovecraft inspiration with the fear of the unknown. Nasty Patty has Hitchcock inspiration with moments of thriller and crime.
I love the entirety of spongebob (yes, even the newest seasons) and i love how random this show is. One second its not horror, the next it is. And also mr krabs sayinf "what the flim flam?!" At 9:08 always gets me laugin
something REALLY scary that you didn't really go into well is spongebob and squidward having to work night shift right after their previous shift and seeing as their the only employees and krusty crab barely closes you know they went day shift, night shift and then day shift...scary world man
I think Slappy must be based on some old-timey celebrity. The voice and character design looks like a character from an old Looney Tunes episode that's a parody of old Hollywood characters/people.

Another episode you forgot to mention is the nasty patty. SpongeBob and krabs thought they killed the health inspector so they tried to hide his body from the police.
The real horror is the modern spongebob episodes that try desperately to pander and flanderize season 1-3's legacy, doing it horribly and appealing to no one.
Except, of course, to the toddlers that not only suck up the slop but also get annoyed at those who grew up with the older episodes and express their disapproval.

Great vid as always, but I feel like you forgot a major episode. The episode I'm talking about is Rock Bottom. What I think made this one creepy for me was not only the weird fish that live in rock bottom, but the overall atmosphere of the episode. Especially the part where Spongebob is at the bus stop and his flashlight burns out, leaving him in complete darkness.
spongebob was already kinda scary to me as a kid and most stuff from the show i saw was apparently some halloween episodes no wonder i wasn't allowed to watch it
My girlfriend wasn't allowed to watch SpongeBob so watching this with her and being able to quote every part of every clip, was honestly a really huge flex. She jokingly said "fuck you" since I was able to quote it all, so naturally I said "later" lmao
Just wanted to throw out something that I rarely see anyone mention. In several rankings and other analysis videos on SpongeBob, I usually see "Squeaky Boots" near the bottom of most people's ranking, sometimes bc the boots squeaking gets annoying. But it's often overlooked that the episode is a reference/homage to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart". The line Krabs shouts, "it's the squeaking of the hideous boots!" Is actually a reference to the final line of the aforementioned short story ("it's the beating of his hideous heart!"). I think with the reference to Nosferatu, Teenage Gary, and that episode in particular, it's cool to see that the crew behind the show clearly had a love for classic horror, from the old black & white, to literature, to the corny B movies, even all the way back then.
I think slappy might be a callback to a scene in looney tunes where a fish takes on his face and says,"Well, now I've seen everything." Then uh... rapidly shoots himself in the head. Yeah idk, it was in a looney tunes out of context video so... OK I just looked it up and it says it's the Peter Lorre fish.
Audio error from 13:01 to 13:12, I forgot to have dialogue (cuck episode reference)

No audio in 13:02 was honestly hilarious.
