Cap Anson was probably the first to go over 3000, but he played so long ago that his actual number of hits is uncertain. His Wikipedia page lists him as having 2995-3435 hits, and to be in the place you have him on the list you have to use the 3435 number. Wikipedia's 3000 hit club page has him at 30th with 3011 hits. Baseball Reference goes with the 3435 number. I think the difference between the two numbers is that the 3435 number counts hits he got from 1871-1875, before the NL was founded, though for all but one of those years he was playing for a team that was one of the founding members of the NL. (He apparently switched teams just before the start of the first NL season, and his old team was kicked out of the league after that first year for refusing to play western road games once they had fallen out of contention.) I'm not sure what could knock him all the way down to 2995.

    • @taojones8
      @taojones8 7 місяців тому

My issue with Anson is that he played before the "modern era" (1901) when the major rules were solidified. For example, Anson never had a foul ball count as a strike. There’s always problems with comparing players from different generations, and Cap is definitely the best pre-modern hitter, but I just don’t think you can put him on the same list as modern era players.

The thing with Ted Williams is that it isn't even necessarily the war years as much as it's the walks. This dude had a .482(!!!!) CAREER OBP. The last time anyone did that over a full season was Barry Bonds in 2004 (apologies to Juan Soto and his .490 OBP in 2020).

    Cap Anson
    Nap Lajoie
    Honus Wagner
    Ty Cobb
    Tris Speaker
    Rogers Hornsby
    Mickey Mantle
    Eddie Murray

    Pete Rose
    Roberto Clemente
    Rickey Henderson
    Tony Gwynn
    Derek Jeter
    Alex Rodriguez
    Ichiro Suzuki
    Albert Pujols
    Miguel Cabrera
Purposely avoided: Babe Ruth, George Sisler, Mel Ott, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Julio Franco, Wade Boggs, Barry Bonds
Result: 19/33 with two strikes. Don't know why I bothered including Mantle and DiMaggio-I guess I have inflated perceptions of their careers because they're Yankee greats. Boggs is on the edge so I don't feel bad about leaving him out, and Hornsby is above 2,900 so he's not a terrible guess, but not getting recent guys like Molitor, Biggio, and Beltre is a bad look.

You'd have to get a minimum 200 hits a season for 15 years to even get to 3000. And since the most guys average out to around 140-150 a season, it would take 20 years minimum to achieve that. Pete Rose will have that record for a long time, probably forever.
