5:19 The size comparison is complete buꙆꙆѕhіt. Comparing a standard gauge train to a narrow gauge mountain railway is as valid as comparing a standard gauge train to the train in Disneyland. The actual difference is marginal: US max width = 10'6" (3.2 m), Europe max width = 3.1 m
When I was 8 yrs old, my sister was 7, and my brother was 4 with our parents. we were moving here to the U.S. from Australia. We rode on the Indian-Pacific going from Perth to Sydney. It took us 3 days to cross the country. To this day, I have some wonderful memories riding on that train.
@wisecampmotorcycles8258 I really had no choice in the matter. I was 8 yrs old, and my dad decided that is what we were going to do. We lived with my grandparents in Fullerton, Ca, for a few months until dad got a job in the printing trade here since that was what he did in Australia. But I do remember the train ride like it was yesterday. My brother and sister were always afraid to walk between the train cars. We had 2 sleeper compartments, mom and my sister and brother in one, and me and dad in another (I was the only one who could sleep through dads snoreing that close). We ate, showered, and slept on the train. I remember watching the roos hopping by as we traveled through the bush. I really have fond memories of that train ride. At the time 1975, that line was the world's longest stretch of straight track. I remember watching out the window as we pulled into the station, and I could see both ends of the train as we made the turn in. From Sydney, we flew to Hawaii (that's our port of entry). From Hawaii, we flew to LAX. It was a memorable trip.
You should see what Nasa says on a daily basis they use that method all the time. Meteors the size of 20 school buses, or a meteor the size of 10 Mammoths like as if Mammoths were really that Big. Its ridiculous right?
Big Boys would've been called the "Wasatch" (named after the mountains the locomotive would traverse), but someone at ALCO (American Locomotive Company) chalked the words "Big Boy" on the smokebox door, and the name stuck
After running trains for many years, the idea of automated trains absolutely scares me. I have seen many remote operated trains breaking a number of safety rules; and I've heard of unreported derailments all of which were unreported while the RC train was hauling dangerous chemicals through populated areas.
I was at that 150th anniversary celebration! It was very interesting. A perfect meeting of my love of history, and my ex-husband's love of trains. And yes....I went on this trip with my ex-husband. We seem to make better friends than spouses.
The Big Boys were originally built not solely for lugging power, but to pull up to 150 reefer cars of perishable fruits/vegetables at 70mph, regardless of terrain. And they did that very well.
India has WAG 12, a single unit locomotive that has the highest horsepower in the world 12000HP. I'm an Indian Railfan and hence proud of this. This beast can pull a couple hundred of wagons double stacked. Also python freights are hauled with 2 or more freights connected to each other. Feels very good that you have included India in your list :). Thank you so much 😊
Honouring the Afgan camelares who provided freight services for many outback Australian people, long ago. So respected are they, one was honoured with a banquet. His culture required he cook his own food so everyone waited for him to cook a chicken.
You should have included the dedicated freight corridors in India. They are atleast 1.5 km long, run at speeds of 100km/h, are hauled by the world's most powerful locomotive which has over 12000 horsepower and the most exciting part is, IT'S A DOUBLE STACK TRAIN, meaning their are 2 stacks of containers on the train. There are lots of videos on UA-cam about it. It's the most advanced freight project in the world.
Great to see the story of the trains. Many years ago l was playing golf with my dad in the coastal town of Saldanha Bay, up the west coast from Cape Town, South Africa. Coming from the northern direction was a train. I have never seen a train so long........5kms / 3miles. At this time the Saldana Harbour allowed private visits. We went to see what happened to the 5km of rail trucks pulled by 4 engines. A type of crane lifted the iron ore trucks as if they were light weight boxes and tipped the iron ore into an open cast ship that held in the region of 100 000 tons bound for South Korea. ( today most of the iron ore goes to China). What a facinating experience during and after our day at golf at the seaside.
5:25 “…a Swiss passenger carriage…” - this is a Cog Railway carriage on a 31,5 inch track against a normal gauge train ! 9:30 This is the Landwasser Viaduct - the Brusio Viaduct is on an other line…! 9:44 This is the Brusio Viaduct on the Bernina line…! Sapsan are Siemens trains .
I am from Australia and i am not only proud of our record for the longest and heaviest diesel train, but also proud that it got mentioned in this video. Keep the facts coming mate!
You should also have included the Iron Ore Line, Malmbanen in Swedish. This line officially runs from Riksgränsen, the national border between Norway and Sweden and luleåin Sweden. Ofotbanen in Norway that runs from the Border to Narvik is also a part of the line. The trains are each 22,9 meters long, 2,9 meters wide and 4,4 meters high. It has maximum speed of 80 km/h. The trains haul a total of 68 cars with a weight of 8600 tonnes. These trains run the whole year which means that they run under heavy snowfall in subzero temperatures. The Iron ore from Karina are delivered all around Europe, Africa and several other places.
Key part ya missed with the Indian Pacific (& freight) this railway line has the WORLDS longest STRAIGHT railroad at 478km (297mil) it is not "Tom Prince"(royalty) but Tom Price ($)

When I was a kid, I regularly saw trains of 115-120 cars. Including engines and cabooses (remember them?). When you say a train of x miles, I have no frame of reference. But 259 wagons? That I can comprehend. Thanks.😂
American trains are impressive as the railroad network is over 150,000 miles. Freight locomotives stand at 16 ft tall and typically haul 2+ mile long worth of freight.
6:05 recently BNSF ran a test train (not as long) down the river sub under the symbol C-NAMMNA. 248 cars, 2 engines in front, 4 in middle, 2 in back. All loaded coal. It ran at about 30 mph until they slowed down a lil and a coupler snapped. Edit: 13:17 very rare omg
Technically, its only a train if it has a kaboose. 97% of "trains" nowadays dont have 1 so their actually just called rail cars. P.S. my grandfather worked for CSX so thats the only reason i know this.
A train has a tail end unit or SBU which ensure brake pressure is maintained and allows the brakes to be applied faster in an emergency situation. The caboose is long gone in the description. An engine with cars but no tail end TIBS is a transfer, in Canada anyway.
Liked this video and the fatcs, but will also suggest that you should do some amazing facts on some of the British Railways (both the company and the British lines)!
Amazing alright in more than one way, the trains, the commentary and above all the humor one hardly comes across in such programs . Keep the good work. I am looking forward to more from you.
Nearly 30 years ago, The National Railway Museum in York was a temporary host to a Chinese steam engine, and I was living in Lancashire, so I used my day off to travel the beautiful journey (by train, of course) to go see it. IIRC it was an 8' gauge! Whatever it was exactly, it was humongous! And black - all over. It was hard to see all the details. I have never felt so small next to a vehicle in my life, and I've been on large RORO ferries! 😂
Actually the first one that can haul the most stuff is actually not the one that can the one that is the largest is Union Pacific big boy and it can haul a 5 1/2 mile long, fully loaded freight train of any material all by itself it is a 4-8-8-4 locomotive!
Greetings from Australia. It's pronounced Gan. (short a) Not Ghaun (long a). Yes, named after the camel masters used to build it. Someone got it wrong - they were sub-continent Indian. But the name has stuck!
I don't have a favorite train, I like them all. I would however love to ride one of Swiss trains through the Alps. That sounds like Digital Camera Heaven to me... I live in Edison, California, just 20 miles from the Tehachapi Loop, which if I saw them all there were at least 5 or more video clips of it in your video. My son and I like to drive to to the Tehachapi Loop Overlook about half a mile south of the loop and sit there and watch the massive trains go by. The ones headed towards Bakersfield are going right past our house. On cooler days in the fall or winter time, we go up on our roof and watch the trains go by.

That is correct. However, trains in North America are much taller (double stack containers and 3-level autoracks).

This video is a testament to Americans using a lot of things as measuting units. Eifel Towers, Football fields, Empire State Buildings, etc.

You left out horseys. 😜🐎🐎🐎
That's funny, since even though the narrators are American, Be Amazed is based out of the U.K. lol
If only there was an internationally accepted SI unit of measurement?? Someone should totally do that ?
Big Boys would've been called the "Wasatch" (named after the mountains the locomotive would traverse), but someone at ALCO (American Locomotive Company) chalked the words "Big Boy" on the smokebox door, and the name stuck
I thought they just came up with that, but I do gotta admit "Wasatch" would've been a nice name.

It was cool to see our railway company Transnet appearing😁😃

Very impressed with your Arnold imitation. 👍👍

technological advancements for safety (like PTC)
