I’ve said it before, these anti woke people focus too much on not being woke and deliver subpar work. If he just got into comics to stick it to marvel and Dc with out first mastering the skill set needed in order to prosper in this industry as a creator, then he set himself up for failure. He can brag about making millions but it won’t last long because he’s not delivering the quality for the price he’s asking. I honestly think he’s just hustling the conservatives right wingers. I learned this from GamerGate, that whole thing produced so many UA-cam and Twitter celebrities in the political sphere that did nothing but run their mouths and made money doing so. They get paid to speak at colleges or political events but do nothing to actually stop the things they criticize, it’s all a hustle. Eric has no power to stop Marvel or DC, he’s made 3-4 million selling 50-70 dollar comics while marvel and DC make over a billion selling 4-5 dollar comics. Isom isn’t revolutionary, it’s the same thing we get with black superheroes, Luke Cage and Black Lightning, gangbangers and drug kingpins are the bad guys, no real supervillains. And the dialogue is horrible, he should go to social gathering or mall and just listen to how people talk to each other, that can be very helpful when writing dialogue. As I said, he needs to master the craft before trying to partake in it.

I've lost my interest in ISOM since when I first saw the inside of the comic. I understand to see how bad woke SJW Marvel and DC has become but this didn't do much better either. This remind me alot of a bad kickstarter game called Mighty No . 9 by co creator Keiji Inafune; it was suppose to be a spiritual successor of Megaman that it was soo bad that it had derailed Inafune's career; not only that but also got Capcom to make Megaman 11. There are many newer indie comics that anti-sjw could use to promote against the big two. Instead they only chose to promote only those who rant for a long time like Eric July.

The book has a right to be critiqued. End of story. It's either good or it's not. But then again some will buy a book for the art even if the story can't save it. We all know that too. But to those that want to defend for whatever reason, better to explain WHY you think the book is good. As a person who has commented on YoungRippa's channel numerous times, no one is really saying why they think the book is good. You cannot say it's good or bad without giving a reason WHY?
Everyone has a right to agree to disagree and be civil about it and move on.
With the amount of books that come across my desk which many are done by Marvel-diversity hires, and indies, chances are someone here thinks these books are Will Eisner level even if anyone else thinks they're not.

The "I hate woke/Liberals" rhetoric is only going to hold on to these fans but so long. Eventually you have to produce quality content and let the buyers gravitate to that. Evan Van Sciver has the same issue with his Cyber-Frog series. He spends more time talking about what the industry is doing than actually working on the comic. I appreciate YoungRippa making himself independent and not having to bow down to the demands of the mainstream. However I feel like the fandom that he has is built on a shaky foundation. I've encountered a few of them, and basically their entire support is based on this culture war, and not the comic itself.

@TheHeadNinjainComics like the others, he prides himself too much on being a veteran when it comes to the comic and literature industry. Eric openly states that he's looking to work and conduct business outside of the status quo of the industry. That includes not only being a creator and publisher but also a distributer. Between all 3 of those areas, it does make sense why Eric would charge so much. His company has no middleman, so he solely has to bear the costs for all three of those areas. Shawn admits to not liking that ISOM costs so much. But let's see how much his books would cost if he was doing the distributing. Plus, Eric states that his comics use paper of higher quality. I believe that because I've been to comicbook stores, and I've felt the quality of the paper used in marvel issues: MAD CHEAP!!!
I have my other suspicions, but I'll wait until after the video is posted before deciding whether or not to post them.

Shawn, I agree for the most part. However, Eric was successful because he had a platform, great artwork, and masterclass marketing campaign (even on mainstream news). That's a rule of thumb in any industry where best quality doesn't always win. There are many great stories that are more than just about magic ties to Africa and hood-level villains who are gangbangers or dealers, however our most creative indie writers and content creators suck at doing business.

It's actually $35. I think the price is fine. I used to agree that it was too much but something that is lost from the pictures is the fact that the books are very well made on a material level. The paper and ink is of quality that is above industry standard. This book will definitely outlast other books when it comes to the natural wear/tear of time and use. "You get what you pay for" is often said as a cautionary tale of not cheaping out on what you want. I'll make the case that this is an instance of that phrase going the opposite way: you get what you pay for. Once you hold the book in your hand, the price makes a lot more sense as pictures do not do the book justice.
I think the book is worth the price, if you don't, that's fine. If it helps, Eric has confirmed that there will be volume/omnibus collections. Those will likely end up being a better deal if you wait it out.

If Eric July waited until he was an absolutely amazing writer the book would never come out. I agree that you are a better writer than Eric July but talent alone never get's you where you need to be.
He is driven and has set up a youtube channel years ago ,gained a following and in many ways has rewritten the rules with how to sell a comic book. Wise people would look at what he has done and act accordingly and adapt to the changing industry. I have noticed that Todd Mcfarlane has made many more videos than he used to since the success of Isom #1 which proves that Todd IS acting accordingly as he should when he sees young hungry comic creators biting his heels.

@@TheHeadNinjainComics 12:22 He's going on about how this black man was looking "weak" in front of a white women. And crying on about how ISOM's weakness against a white women shows " that white people are more powerful than you". As if Black superheros should never be beaten by anybody white.
Sounds like some Black Nationalist Tariq Nasheed hater shit to me. I dunno maybe we both heard something different from Shawn?
I like some of Shawn's take but he comes off sometimes as a anti white hater to me.

Nah there’s some criticisms that were off.
      - 3:20 Spot the iD politics.
      - 4:08 The plot is very streamlined; Avery is is looking for his family friend, Jasmine Newman, in hopes that nothing happens to her. Obstacles are placed in front of Avery in order to reach Jasmine; and that obstacle happened to be Darren Fontaino and Santwan, in this book.
      - 5:02 The story for Isom begins on the very 4th page as soon as Altona makes that call to Avery.
      - 6:50 Avery isn’t convinced by Altona, but is only motivated to go after Jasmine, because of her Jasmine’s mother, Mrs. Newman. He’d feel guilty, if he allowed something bad to happen to Mrs. Newman’s daughter, as it wouldn’t only upset Mrs. Newman, but Avery’s mother as well.
      - 8:20 Yaira takes up 9 out of 96 pages in this book, how does this put Avery in the background?
      - 10:20 Darren moonlights as a club owner. “Chuck, get this man an application and then escort him out my club.” - Darren Fontano

12:00 You conveniently leave out the fact that Isom is already wounded by Santwan, leading up to the confrontation with Yaira. Both characters are defensive, as the initially fight, but ultimately, Yaira’s ability to fly and Isom’s damaged state led to him being ragdolled. It doesn’t affirm white supremacy.

    WHY ARE BRIDDERS LIKE THIS?

    • @ShawnSJames
      @ShawnSJames  11 місяців тому +2

Maybe you don't understand what Identity Politics is. Isom is a book where the black character by a black creator where the Black hero steps into the background and gives all the white characters power. He's not his own man and not in the center of his own story. He's a background character in the foreground of a White world. That's not storytelling. That's bootlicking and pandering to White racist comic fans.
