  • Hello and welcome to the 9th episode of evolution of MS-DOS gaming.
We are in the year of 1990 now.
Games using the VGA graphics and Soundblaster/Adlib for music/soundfx were now common and that made the PC games really high quality and comparable to the likes of Amiga.
And there were a lot of good MS-DOS games released in 1990 (that's why the list is, again, so long in this episode). Games like Wing Commander, 4d Sports Driving, Red Baron, Loom, King's Quest 5... and lots more.
Have fun and let us know in the comments if you think of any games we might have missed.

I remember playing a lot of PGA Tour, long with Commander Keen I and King's Quest V, though for King's Quest V it was the CD-Rom Windows version. So many classics.

I cannot stress enough how Id Software, with its "Commander Keen" series, showed to the world in 1990 that "Yes, you can have butter smooth scrolling and gameplay in a 2D platform game on PC". They really put to shame all the rests of the platform games of the same year (included that awful port of Castlevania, much worse even of the one on something at that time completely obsolete like the NES).
Also shout out to "Ultima VI - the False Prophet", miles ahead of every other RPG available at the time, and probably one of the best RPG of the '90s. I played it again a few years ago, thanks to the modern port "Nuvee" (which add many QoL improvements, such as the most needed full screen for the game window), and it still holds up pretty well, it's really an amazing game... The world, the characters, they are so full of life and of different stories... and to interact with them, you basically chat. You can spend months on this game. Origin at the time was really great...It really created worlds.

If it wasn't for Ultima 4 and 7, Ultima 6 would hands down be the best Ultima game ever. I actually prefer it over 7 in some ways, even.
Railroad Tycoon Deluxe has been another game that's always on my drive, no matter how long it's been since release. As has King's Bounty, the forerunner of the Heroes of Might and Magic series.
Dragon Wars is another favorite; I once ran through the entire game in one sitting, when my grandfather was in the hospital. I had a 386 laptop I was using as my own DOS machine; really crappy screen so slow games like RPGs and strategy games were all you could play on it, but it was able to run quite a few different games, including Civilization and Might and Magic 3.
PGA Golf got a lot of playtime as well back in the day. Not the best, but a solid golf game. Wizardry 6 was almost modern for the series; it had graphics! Still basically the same game though as 5, with more advanced character development. 7 is the absolute classic must-play of that series IMO.
I didn't realize Bard's Tale 3's DOS port was released in 1990. I actually am near the end of a run in that, albeit in the Remastered version. Getting ready for tomorrow has stopped it for now. For that matter, Champion of Krynn I thought was later. First game I ever beat on my own. Much better than Secret of the Silver Blades, which was kind of a slog, compared to the other Gold Box Games.

@@drg5352 while I think that Ultima VII is a great game, I still prefer Ultima VI combat (over the mess that's the one in Ultima VII) and dialogue system (chat is more immersive than bullet points, and if you know the right words, you can skip a good chunk of the game 😂). And yes, the story and dungeons in Ultima IV are probably the best in the entire series.

      @@CATinBOOTS81 Agreed entirely.
Now I want to play Ultima 6 again.

It was EGA that added the smooth scrolling registers, how do Id software comes into that?

@@IkarusKommt They did it on CGA.
Beyond which, they were the first TO do it.

NightBreed seem a fun game, Midwinter probably was too far ahead for his time and Horror Zombies from the Crypt leaves me speechless because look like a 1995-1996 game,
