1990, a transition year for sure: the last year of the NES' prime, as the gaming world was steadily moving from the 8-bit era to the 16-bit era, with Sega giving Nintendo the business with the Genesis and the SNES spreading its wings. The Arcade scene would look very different the following year as well, when Capcom unleashed the 1991 fighting masterpiece, Street Fighter II, so 1990 was the last year before the fighting genre would take control of the Arcades. Thanks for this excellent video.
Things seemed to move very fast that year. I'm from a PAL region so we got the Mega Drive that year, the master system and NES were still flying high. The arcade scene was booming also. Great time to be a gamer.
Sorry to piggyback your response like this, but as good as these videos are, all this content about SNES games in 1990 is bogus. The SNES debuted in the States in the late summer of 1991.
I should know, because I bought one on opening day :)
The other titles trickled in, but, again, unless you're talking the Super Famicom, ALL of the SNES titles debuted in '91.
@augustusclaudiusvenorius6292 SNES and Super Famicom are the same thing to me. Didn't released where I am until '92 so I've been going on first release years of the games.
@@GamesByYear Gotcha.
I had mulled over making lists for each main region's release years but I didn't want to reuse my games too many times.
An amazing year in gaming. I agree with your final picks like JJ did. Can't argue with those at all. Had some great games here dude
There are still so many more I could have added. Lol
Yeah dude but your picks here are great to start with dude
Great list man. Ninja Gaiden I need to try aswell as moonwalker. I literally just beat Shadow Dancer the other day that was a great game. Number 2 and 1 can’t argue with those 🙌
Been looking at some of your older games. Seen you did Batman Returns. Always glad to see those. Shadow Dancer is a great game, Sega games were always thought but good.
This was a very special time here in Brazil. 3rd gen consoles had been in the market for only a year (licensed Master System and several NES clones, all released in 89) and in the end of 1990 the Mega Drive was released officially. Also, that was when we got the first editions of game magazines that would last for years. I heard of most of these games around that time, even if I would only get to actually play them much later.
It was a little similar here in the UK, we got everything late for being a PAL territory. We got the Mega Drive in 1990 and Super Nintendo in 92. The Master System still sold well in Brazil and over here, giving it a bunch of new games that didn't release anywhere else.
What games are your favourites if you don't mind me asking?
Interesting list. Castle of Illusion is quite fun and challenging.
I couldn't help but notice that all of the Little Nemo Dream Master footage was from the first level. I can't say that I'm surprised, even by NES standards that was a tough game to get through.
Yeah, I used to be better at that game. I do go back to these games from time to time and try to get more footage for future videos. I might need some Game Genie codes next time. 😆
@@GamesByYear that was a really cool game. I wanted that one bad, the year it came out, haha.
Mi juego favorito. Megadrive castle of ilusion❤️
Aliens arcade could have easily been boarded to any home console at that time...😢
It would have been right at home on the Super Nintendo, I think.
It looks a lot more fun than later Alien(s) games to come along.
I would put this year up there along with 1998 as one of the best in gaming
Castle of Illusion is still impressive!
It is indeed. It's such a well-made video game.
@@GamesByYear When we got that game one Christmas, I remember my Dad watching us play and even he was amazed at the fluidity of movements by the characters, sounds and soundtrack.
The first time I gave it a serious playthrough was on Easter Sunday about 10 years ago. I've made it a tradition to play it on Easter ever since.
That's pretty cool to hear. I'm happy that game means so much to you. It's time for another playthough myself, I think.
It one of the best mega drive games ever and so so charming. That first level music is well you know …great
Ah yes, the SNES's debut year, the console I still consider the second-greatest of all time (and still my actual personal favourite), behind ONLY the PS2. This was a golden era.
It's definitely a great time for Gamers. I'm currently capturing PS1, PS2, and PS3 games so I can get videos for their years, too.
AWESOME vid man🎉 how did you rank them? your own personal scores?
Thank you.
I kinda just went through each game, two at a time , picking which I liked most until I had in order. Probably not the best way, but hey. 🤣
I would swap Castle Illusion around with Super Mario World, I know people would call me crazy for that, but I thought Castle of Illusion was way more impressive at the time it dropped than Super Mario World was.
Super Mario World was a disappointment to me, it came with too much hype and I didn't think it was much better than Super Mario Bros 3, if at all.
I felt Castle of Illusion was a development masterpiece that perfectly took a Disney license and Segafied it.
Any love for gaming is all good in my book. Castle of Illusion and Mario World are both special to me. Its hard picking a favourite when it comes to games of that quality. I normally tip towards Nintendo for the platform games though.
Castle of Illusion makes for a good afternoon, Super Mario World makes for a great month.
@@MichaelTaylor-qp2xf I suppose you could say that.
The thing with Super Mario World was, that once I'd got that magic 96⭐there was literally no incentive for me to go back and play it all over again, it's an unnecessarily long game and I felt relieved to be able to put it down by the end. Some levels I'd never want to play again, they were annoying.
Castle of Illusion just felt more enchanting and felt like it was put together with more consideration for a game just being fun, not being over the top and not having top justify hype with length. The whole game was telling a story and the length and difficulty of the game was such that you could pick it up and complete it over and over again, it was actually fun and not too frustrating, just challenging enough.
I think Super Mario world would have benefited for being half its length, but having much better graphics, storytelling and level design. Super Mario Bros 2 is a shine example and was actually my favourite one.

The thing with Super Mario World was, that once I'd got that magic 96⭐there was literally no incentive for me to go back and play it all over again, it's an unnecessarily long game and I felt relieved to be able to finally put it down by the end. Some levels I'd never want to play again, they were annoying.
Castle of Illusion just felt more enchanting and felt like it was put together with more consideration for a game just being fun, not being over the top and not having to justify the hype by being unnecessarily big (which for me is a problem with the modern gaming era to this day). Castle of Illusion from start to finish felt like an interactive animated story told cartoon in its atmosphere alone and the length and difficulty of the game was such that you could pick it up and complete it over and over again. It was actually fun and not too frustrating, just challenging enough.
I think Super Mario World would have benefited for being half its length, but having much better graphics, storytelling and level design. Super Mario Bros 2 is a shine example and was actually my favourite one. Pound for pound, it was more impressive I thought on that 8-BIT NES at the time.
Does "Carrier Air Wing" has anything to do with "U.N. Squadron"?
It was the spiritual successor as far as I'm aware. They are both quite similar.
Dude Nintendo needs to bring back Pilotwings and F-Zero for real. F-Zero 99 don't count.
I agree. I would love to see a sequel or a remake in Star Fox, Pilotwings, F-Zero and Wave Race.
Somebody give this man a medal! YES!!!!!!
I haven't played outzone but i hear it's a good game for this year
I really need to keep a list just for your suggestions. You know a lot of great games.
I just discover your channel and its awesome, congrats and i wish you success
That's nice of you to say. Welcome!
What games / consoles etc are you into?
@@GamesByYear i love from nes to Gamecube and from ps1 to ps2
:) cheers
Did Carrier Air Wing just pulled out a 9/11?
My favourite game from 1990 has to be Solar Jetman Hunt for the Golden Warship
That's one of my childhood favourites. I thought I was the only person on the planet who liked it so much.
Yup, Super Mario World is very much correctly in the top spot.
It's still one of the best Platformers ever made.
Mega drive is the best !
What would your favourites be?
Isn’t the second game Ninja Gaiden and not Ninja Gaiden II for NES?
Where the hell are Captain Commando and G i Joe??
Never played GI Joe.
I forgot about Captain Commando.
I'll probably update these lists annually as I discover new games or like/dislike some of them.
Captain commando sucks, both came out in 91 anyway
Goof
@@GamesByYearignore this guy, neither game come out in 1990
@@GamesByYear I mentioned them because they are classic games
It's all good. We all have love for different games. Sometimes the same when I'm lucky. If I was a bigger channel, then I would be able to base my lists on what other people chose.
top 40 would be all arcade games
Not a fan of the console games?
@@GamesByYear I am, just that arcade games are almost always better. A few exceptions of course.
In Alien Storm, the characters from Golden Axe went to the future!!!! 😂😂😂
Pretty much. The Golden Axe formula would work on any Planet or Era. I wish there were more games like it today.
Это просто хорошие игры но тут нет не одной лучшей
I would say a Nintendo fanboy Decided the #1 spot but i did play that one a Lot at the Time . not sure if i can say its the Best
Where is Captain tsubasa and duboule dragon?
Final Fight was in 1989.
Snes version in 1990.
Most of them are really poor chose
Sorry to disappoint you, they are personal favourites of mine. What's some of yours?
They’re not, you just don’t know what you’re talking about
