This stuff wasn’t really known when I started in the late 70’s. Let alone explained. There were a few doing it but I never even heard a description of it. After life getting in the way for 20 years , I’m getting started again. Having this explained to me really helps.

@@Sirvalorsax I've ordered a Yibuy 7 for alto. It claims to be good plated copper. I have the facilities to test simple element stuff. I'll let you know what I find. Also, I'm really hoping that it's a killer mouthpiece.

Amazingly informative!! There is such a thing as a true 6 octave range. Please check out tenor saxist “Rocky Yera”. He has a video playing in the altissimo so high that it sounds like precise whistling. I dared him to play Donna Lee 2 octaves high and did a video on that too!! I would love to hear your take because if what he’s doing is true then the tenor could have 6-7 actual octaves!!

I appreciate what you are showing and you play it great. But what if you have a great sax without a high F# key..?.( which there are many.?)

I think Bert Wilson always said the third pearl (G) acts as the third octave key. I saw Jeff Coffin talk about this somewhere, but haven't been able to find the video again. If anyone knows where it is would be appreciated.
@@MyRackley Yea, that third pearl works to close the one vent again so I think that's why Bert referred to it that way too. That video is so interesting bc Jeff talks about Bert being the only teacher Lenny Pickett ever had, and how Bert had a 5 1/2 octave range, and Lenny has 7 (which seems unreal to me lol); then he talks about Bert's fingerings off of that third pearl key, and they seem to have a linear sense to them (like the normal range of the horns fingerings). So I think it might tie in to this video well. This channel is honestly the most helpful I have found for altissimo and overtones. Once I realized what he was saying about air speed (and the ratios) something really clicked.
Just getting into the second octave of altissimo, and just can't figure out how to get the air to go as fast as it seemingly needs to (topping out at double G, and then G#/A are very iffy/weak). Going to rewatch all your stuff, obviously.
What reeds do you use ...real or plastic? I can only get to altissimo D
I prefer cane but I use synthetic ones as backups
Hi. I have a Selmer Reference 36 tenor and a Mk6 alto, but I play the tenor mostly. I've just notices a weird difference - If I finger 8ve + 1 & 3 but leave 4 (F) up on the tenor, the Bis is slightly vented. However, on the Mk6 alto, if I do the same fingering, the Bis key is completely open. As I want to concentrate on developing the altissimo range on the Ref 36 tenor, I wanted to know if it was normal for the Bis to be slightly vented when fingering 8ve + 1 & 3 but leaving 4 (F) up, or is it peculiar to the Reference 36? What does your tenor do?

My thoughts were more along the line of: Due to the keywork layout, the Mk6 alto Bis key is fully open when fingering 1 & 3, but on the Ref 36 tenor, could it be deliberate to have the Bis key slightly vented with 1 & 3 down? It fully closes when the right-hand stack (F to D) is down.
Also, with regard to the 1 & 3 fingering, do most other modern tenor saxes function in the same way to my Reference 36?
I would make sure that the adjustment posts aren't over tightened. This is near the "F" key. If it is out of alignment it will cause leaks. I would also get that horn checked for leaks by a local repair tech.
Does this "magic altissimo" fingering also apply to the Alto sax? And if so, does it matter if you have the high f# key?
This works but much better on tenor. I'm still in the process of getting an alto agian

I was making progress with altissimo and overtone until I noticed my sax has 2 leaks in the bottom register, I guess I should get them fixed before I keep going
Yes. You will notice a bigger differene the further the leak is up the horn
Hey @Sirvalorsax, I just had a couple of questions on how you would go about adjusting mouthpieces to get more of an open and control kind of sound. Do you have anyway I could email you or contact you maybe? Do you prefer I should ask my questions here to spread the knowledge to everyone who watches your videos?
I prefer to use this format for answering question. The only adjusting I feel comfortable doing with mouthpieces is flattening the table. I don't have the skill level for other adjustments...yet.
Do you know what kind of shape in a mouthpiece causes a more open and controlled sound? (The Yamaha Clarinet Mouthpiece Chart is my reference) Maybe a medium facing length with a slightly more aggressive approach into the tip opening on the rails? Just a question on what you’ve notice in mouthpieces that cause that more open but flexible sound.

You have any tips for altissimo on Bari? I feel like that's the worst sax to use altissimo on because it's so hard.
I've been trying to get a Bari for years. I'll look into it.
@@Sirvalorsax It's a really fun instrument, it might be because I have a small tip opening, but even the side keys are hard for me. I can play in the upper register of the tenor and Alto just fine.

saxophoner Man123 I second the guy saying bari is the easiest, I don’t know why you’re having a problem. The bari I play on is old and has a decent amount of leaks so thats not a factor
@@_Matt8 It might be because of my tip opening because I usually play on bigger tip openings on my Alto and tenor.
