    Very nicely done Scott ! I use your 2nd fingering but it is not the easiest one to get ! Shall try your 1st fingering, did not know about this one ! Thanks for sharing your experience ! Very useful 👌👌🎷🎶

      The first one is my go to. As you heard in the video, the second one can take me into squak city. It's funny, on alto my G fingering has worked for every student on every horn. On tenor it's a gamble of which one will work. The good thing is that there are so many of them to choose from :-).

      That´s true !! This morning, on my Selmer tenor sax, I was playing an altissimo G# which sounded a bit out of tune (low) and found out a new fingering that solved my problem, just testing myself. Almost all musicians have their own fingering !

    DUDE. Finally got my Altissimo G to pop easily with your first fingering! Thank you so much!! I had been just straight up hitting a wall with a fingering that probably just doesn't work so well for my horn. This is awesome!

    Thanks a lot! I've achieved the altissimo G with your first fingering. I can play another altissimo notes, but the G always was a trouble for me.
    Note: if the altissimo G sounds slightly out of tone (between F# and G), is possible to correct it adding the E or F key (at least, it works on my saxophone).
    Now I'll can play the solo of Smooth Operator (Sade), it has an iconic altissimo G in its final part.
    Great video, Scott. Greetings from Santiago! 🇨🇱

    Never hit high g before today. Thank you!

  • @ktpmusic2406
    @ktpmusic2406 6 років тому +2

    First, I should add for any of your viewers that read this comment that I found that hitting altissimo G is much easier to do when I'm standing up to play rather than sitting. With the previous fingering I used - the high front F and the bottom F# key or third one you teach here - I couldn't hardly ever get it at all while sitting.
    The first real breakthrough for me on it - after just being able to hit it - was learning that if I stand I can hit it much more consistently and actually hold it out. It was still difficult to articulate - as in stop and start again - and I couldn't add vibrato to it at all, though. I also often had to play or grace note into it for a song I'm learning right now. As in very briefly hit the high F# first then hit the G. It also was pretty thin sounding compared to my high F and high F#.
    Until today when I watched this video...
    Scott, thank you so much for it. The first fingering you teach in this video, the one that works best on your horn and mouthpiece combo, seems to be best on mine too. I'd never heard of using a high B plus the F# key to get it, and was shocked today when I tried it and heard how much more full and stable it sounded. With that fingering I can hit it right away without having to play up to it, I can articulate it, and I can add vibrato to it now even.
    I'm totally stoked as it is a note I've struggled with learning to hit consistently for a year-and-a-half now or so.
    Thank you so much for posting something that seems magical to me after having struggled so much with it.

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  6 років тому

      That's probably because of the angle of the mouthpiece when you are sitting vs. standing. Try sitting and adjusting the angle a bit, push your sax out with your right hand thumb and see if that helps you get it when you're sitting down.

    • @strangeradvice1288
      @strangeradvice1288 6 років тому

      Scott Paddock Thanks for the reply here, Scott. I did try adjusting the angle of my horn as you suggested I do, and it did make a difference. I’m still able to get it out easier when standing, but what you suggested helped. Thanks!

      Hey Dave! Try the 1st one. That works great for me. As for the other altissimo fingerings, I use the exact same ones on Tenor as I do on alto. So check out that video again and try those fingerings on your tenor, they should work! I play alto more than tenor, so there may be some better fingerings, but I prefer to keep the fingerings as close as possible so I don't have to think about different fingerings on different horns.

    Many thanks for this. Your preferred fingering worked for me, and your 5th one (your student's) works even better! None of the fingerings I could find in charts were working at all so this video has been a Gods send. Same goes for many other altissimo notes on my tenor above G. Have you done any videos or info to cover any of those? Liked and subscribed :)

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  3 роки тому

      I'm really comfortable on altissimo on tenor, but I would never teach anyone my fingerings. haha. I use the same ones as I do on alto, and they are far from perfect on the tenor, but I can make them work with my breath support and embouchure. I do that, because I play those notes effortlessly and don't want to have to think about different fingerings on each horn. However, the G fingering I use on alto sounds a G# on tenor, so I had to find an alternative.

    Thanks for the tips, the one your student did came out with ease. Question though, which fingering you use to comfortably go to the A? I use front F, so would like to smoothly connect those 3 notes: F, G and A on altissimo. Thanks

      Hey! Welcome to the Sax School! The key under the high F# key is an alternate F# key called the FORK F#. You finger a regular F, and add that key with your third finger and it will turn it into an F#. It's great for trilling between an F and and F#.

      The very first thing you need to do is learn your scales. All music and improv is based on scales so the better you know them the better off you will be. Second, technique studies ... moving your fingers fast(er) and clean. Third, long tones. If you work hard on those 3 things everything else will come naturally.
