In philosophy of science the best example we were taught was Lister, developing the practices for medical hygiene--and the lives saved by that over any gadget.

You definitely deserve something for doing all these vids. 10:30 that's a really helpful way to think of embouchure during altissimo actually; you get your embouchure right, and then you feel the notes like lock-in via your throat position. Baffling does increase the airspeed in the mouthpiece so it can "effect" altissimo--if not necessarily help it. It's bc of the Bernoulli Principle I think.
Thanks. On baffles, high baffle mouthpieces make the mouthpiece tip opening feel smaller making it necessary to get stiffer reeds and/or a more open tip for that mouthpiece. Using a more open tip and stiffer reeds will make altissimo easier. In short, its the inherent amount of resistance within a mouthpiece that matters most. This is why classical saxophonists don't use high baffle mouthpieces with large tip openings and they can have phenomenal altissimo. I'm working on this video now. With that being said though, modern mouthpiece manufacturing is ABSOLUTLEY SUPERB! Many attributes can be designed to effect the way a mouthpiece performs unlike any other time in sax mouthpiece history.

I’m a things with strings and things with keys guy by trade and don’t really play wind instruments (I own a clarinet but don’t give it much time) but love jazz and have been curious and fascinated for years how guys like Coltrane and Pharoah were able to get the sounds, pitches, and controlled noise that they did/do. You are a fantastic teacher and your videos are compelling and easy to understand. Despite not being a wind musician I plan on watching a lot of your vids, keep up the great work my man

To anybody beginning to dabble in overtones and multiphonics, I'd like to recommend having a look at Sigurd Rascher's book "Top Tones for the Saxophone." You probably mentioned it somewhere in your videos, but I'd like to drive home the point. Even people who don't want to play altissimo can benefit enormously by working it through. (Thoroughly!) Fattens up your sound, gives you overall better control.
Ok now I understand. I have started to play couple of years ago. My teachers talk about chords and I thought that it was for me wrong impression. But now i understand that the sound of a Saxophone contains more harmonics then other instruments. I have studied Fourier analysis in the Technical Unversity. It makes sence what You are talking. Like they say the music is made of harmonics. ie The music contains many distortions

sorry accidently sent (below thread etc) ...anyway..Donald Harrison Jr ...he played to most Outrageous Sax Ive ever heard (Alto) ...he had that thing so wide open it was like he was playing a didgereedoo....almost like you could hear the air swirling thru it (all harmonically) ... in fact it sort of reminded me of Hendrix and feedback . I dont know if DH Jr. has ever recorded that "Phenomenon" (but it was truly phenomenal to my ears ). You are the only other person (I've heard)..that seems to have the keys to that universe..thanks agains for sharing your knowledge...and all that fine ear candy

I love your tutorials and reviews, but can you clear something up for me? I think I'm really misunderstanding something.... In your 2018 video "Are Overtone Useless for Learning Altissimo" you say that they are, but appear to be suggesting the opposite in this video "Multiphonics For Altissimo"
Overtones are clearly important in our understanding of how a saxophone produces notes but I am addressing the standard way overtones are taught for the purpose of playing altissimo. This most recent video is a departure from the standard method of overtone production. The standard method relies on focusing on the bell notes for overtones which work well. However, above them the sax is a disaster. I address this disaster by making lessons out of this inherent problem. I think the standard was overtones are taught is what is useless because the sax only behaves this way on the bell tones.
Sir, your amazing productions (and your playing) has altered my universe. There is now a "free app" available called insTuner,...I find it very nice and easy to use as its much like a tachometer (clock face) with a needle...so one can also visualise the circle of 5ths ( tritones 180 degrees) and hence I have been able to sort out my pitch issues...and better learn to trust my ears. Derpy Sheep you can’t play chords, I’m a guitarist but imma have to say piano is the best instrument, playing the bass and melody to a song, and also being able to play different sounds on a keyboard

Is that a cannonball vintage reborn? If so, what are the differences between the vintage and the big bell stone series. I would probably get brute finish either way.
Yes, it is. I would recommend against the Brute if you live or will be working in a high humidity environment. Mine turned greenish and accumulated a lot of muck and the patina will keep patina-ing. The VR is a more traditional saxophone design closer to vintage saxophones and the BB is a more modern large bore and bell design. I've had a lot of Cannonballs over the years.
