Freespace: The Great War (Lore Overview)

- This is the story of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" but on a much broader intergalactic scale with a touch of genocide. The explosions are pretty cool too.

Cool and good places I used for this video:
fsport.hard-li... (FS1 Port for FS2)
www.hard-light... (Pretty much all the MediaVP work they did for both games)
wiki.hard-ligh... (Freespace Wiki)
www.freespacemo... (Freespace Reference Bible)

So I messed up and credited Dan Wentz as "Dan Mentz". Unfortunately it wasn't until I finished my video about the NTF Rebellion in FS2 did I realize my goof. And while you're reading this, check out his soundcloud at: soundcloud.com/daniel-wentz , which includes my favorite track from FS: soundcloud.com/daniel-wentz/freespace-outtakes-just-fing-bite-me
Don't fret, the man himself will forgive you for this error if he watches this.
So, any plans to do Red Faction I and Guerrilla lore?
You are forgiven! Thanks for making these videos
@@danwentzcheers mentzy boy
2:27 RIP IKEA I used to get some damned good coffee tables and shelves from there, and Ross was a great place for cheap clothes
FSU 3D artist here. This is great, and we're glad to see our work used in such awesome content! I hope to see NTF Rebellion and Capella Incident covered in similar fashion.
That's absolutely great to hear, I'm glad you and the FSU team have liked how I've used the assets for this video that the team has created. Oh and I definitely intend to give the NTF Rebellion/Capella Incident the same treatment in the near-future.
So, you gonna explore even some fanworks, Mac's Lore?
Thank you for your work
Freespace has always been one of my favourite sci fi franchises. Hope to see something new in this universe someday.
Colonol Dekker of hard-light (aka Orestes Tactical) approves this video.
I'm so glad there is still a fan base for this game. This may have been the first PC game I ever played
It was one of the first I played and may have set the tone for me liking space and sci-fi lol
@@RennieAsh same here, I definitely attribute a lot of my love for space and sci-fi to playing this when I was young!
It wasn’t my first but one of the first I loved dearly.
Also there is still a fan base, I played freespace 1 on release in 1998 I believe, no Gpu, just software mode with a flight stick/joystick.
I’m coming back to this game, I miss it. Finally bought it on GoG for $8 each, tho I guess it was on sale for like $2.50 each back in 2018.
It’s funny how much later games like Mass Effect would borrow much of its story from Freespace
Such a thrilling, mysterious universe. FreeSpace really did something perfect, and it was the vastness and mystery. I wish there would be another sequel in my lifetime.
I remember I defended the Plato so well that the Shivans couldn't destory it, so the ship got to the waypoint, and then just sat there, after a little while it just blow up, and the escape pod jumped lol
Accursed scripted moments!
Still an awesome mission though.
I want to attest that this happened to me once, too. It _is_ doable, although I don't know how, exactly.
I _think_ I tied the last bomber long enough to keep the Plato alive. And when I finally destroyed it, it triggered a failsafe in the mission scripting that said "welp! Just blow it up because reasons, then. 🤷♂️"
@8:57 - The GTD Galatea was actually guarding the Deneb-Vasuda jump node, not the Antares-Vasuda jump node. Likewise, the GTD Bastion was paired with the Galatea in defending Deneb so it is not "alone". It was never stated but it seems the Bastion had to step-aside and retreat to Alpha Centauri when it lost its partner destroyer and it accepted that it cannot do anything to protect Vasuda.
Nice video, brings back memories. The first game made everything seem so desperate and hopeless down to the last mission. It made you FEEL that it was a victory by the edge of your teeth. Really amazing.
Just got this recommend today, hopefully the algorithm is picking it up. Anyone watching this should play Freespace. The first one is a little basic but still fun, the second is an absolute epic and mods like Blue Planet take it to a whole other level.
Blue Planet is really a cut-above most mods. I'm still waiting for the conclusion of War in Heaven.
Best game ever, first game i got for my new Pentium II 400 Mhz "Supercomputer"... huge upgrade from a 486 lol... Fantastic video, dude.
I am just on the verge of finishing my blind Let's Play of Descent Freespace and stumbled upon this. Your narration was very captivating and I look forward to watching your other videos. :)
Thank you!
Hope you did well.
Also, which difficulty did you play?
@@michaelandreipalon359 Easy! There was a lot to take in after playing it the first time but I had lots of fun with it.
This is awesome! Me and my brother love both games so please do the 2nd part!
Defintely, it's just a question of when. Though I do intend to see about covering the events of the Hades Rebellion in Silent Threat before I move onto FS2 proper.
@@MacsLore Really appreciated also the custom maps that you used showing arjuna 1 watching how eva and Lucifer came out of the node were AWESOME
@@MacsLore Silent Threat or Silent Threat Reborn?
@@Karajorma Reborn's going to be my go to for that video. But I think I might do something FS2-related first instead, mainly because I'm far more familiar with FS2 then I am with ST, which I have little experience in.
Into subspace it can be tracked..In subspace it can be harmed. After that ancient sequence, this Alpha 1 pilot was clawing at the launch, to deliver the said harm, that had been denied to untold people and races. Our finest hour.
Great recap of the Great War, great use of pictures
Your lore videos are great! How the heck do you only have 67 subscribers?? Oh well, you have one more now at least
Lol! Thanks for that. Also I think you might've been my 69th subscriber, so, nicee.
Headz
I'll probably be subscribing after I'll watch a few more vids.
I hadn't played this in 20 years but it's amazing how quickly it all returns during your descriptions.
Why has this movie not yet been made? Brilliant writing for a phenomenal game from my childhood
Well, there's a longplay series of the FreeSpace games by one shivanSpS.
I am still in awe of the games story and plot.
I fuckin loved this game and still do this day. And i was born in 93.
Recently found this channel. Man I love it. Keep going bro. Awesome work on your stories!
A starlancer lore video will be great
Pilot attend; I love these videos!
I would love to have Sabaton do a song on the Great War against the Shivans.
Or the Kilarathi
I played this game when it came out. I was 8-9 years old. Got some medals my dad didnt get. Destroy a shivan ship on the first mission they find you. Safe some ships that i thought were scripted to be destroyed. Crazy game to play as a kid
This is awesome!! Nicely done
I remember the first scene well. I had just come from a 3DO and Wing Commander 3 and had a fancy new pc. This was the first game i loaded and that intro...the absolute terror of that pilot...yeah we need games like this again.
Ah yes... my favorite game of all time which none of my friends know about. I wish there's someway this whole genre and franchise could be brought back into relevance and even continued. If only i can find someone to play through the campaigns in coop. Or at least talk with someone about it.
Coop would be interesting lol
Ooh, hope you will get a co-op buddy for FS2's Operation Templar.
thanks for that story man 👍
greetings from argentina🇦🇷
Thank you, YT algorithm. Guess the FreeSpace duology (trilogy if one counts Silent Threat, preferably in its Reborn form, as a separate game) is still getting love outside of shivanSpS' help.
And to anyone wanting to try this out especially in modern computers, I recommend FreeSpace 2 with the Source Code Project mods, with FS Port (for FS1), Silent Threat: Reborn (for a far better game compared to the official expansion of the first game), and Blue Planet (for a lot of fixes and graphical enhancements for FS2, plus the original yet incomplete fan campaigns it has). Maybe even Derelict for a sort of expansion pack for FS2.
Good stuff!
Dekker approves this video again.
I want to play these games again so bad...
Loved this series!
Rest in peace, Galatea.
Saddest moment in gaming
Holy buggersnipe! Is it hard to install the mods needed to get the freespace 1 graphics this good? O.o 🥰😍 . Also love the video. Played freespace so much as a kid ❤
The Knossos software the community made was a literal godsend to me for getting everything I needed in one go. Starting with a retail copy of FS2, all you have to do is download the FS2 Media VPs, then the FSPort, and then the FSPort MediaVPs. It might sound like a long way to get to the good stuff but with Knossos you can get all of it within a handful of clicks.
@@MacsLore Downloaded Knossos now and getting the media vps. Ill look for the FSPort too. Thanks for the heads up what mods to get! :D :D :D
@@MacsLore It says a joystick is needed? Can't I use mouse and keyboard with the knossos client?
@@RuneNorse Thats strange, you should be able to. I've never encountered that but only because I used a joystick. Did you go into the Knossos settings, select "No Joystick" and click Save?
@@MacsLore yes i was a fool. Got it to work now ❤
The Great War ended over thirty years ago.
Our Elders tell stories of a glorious civilization, of people with myths of humanity everlasting, who hurled themselves into the void with no fear.
Soon the great war will actually have been 32 years ago ;-)
More Freespace Lore please! 🥺🥺🥺
played this alot when it came out loved the idea of beeing on the loose and just barely able to get out alive at the end.
I learned you could dive into the Lucifer and get beyond their shields to do damage. I did very little damage but I had accidentally found this out when I bumped into it expecting the shield to bounce me off!
I loved this game when I played it for the first time, maybe even more than Wing Commander II (III has that one... incident that forever mars my memory of that franchise). I wish I could say the same for Freespace II... Maybe I'm just a dummy head but I found the story too impenetrable to get a grasp on it.
❤😊❤
Freespace 1 and 2. One of the last great space operas.
anybody else remember kicking shivan fighters' asses with dumbfire missiles *before* they could be tracked?
The Eva was destroyed in a pitch-ed battle.
Where did you get the music for this video?
What mods did you use for the cockpit look?
This isn’t lore it’s just a summary of what happened in the game.
Why no English subtitles? Some of your videos don’t have them.
I'd do degenerate things for FS3 by V
That might very well have to be the case if Saints Row 2022 got greenlit and not FS3
@@MacsLore --Admiral Bosch speech on extreme methods to achieve goals-- lol, cheers mate. Also, great content, you're appreciated
@@MacsLore At this point all Volition will do by making a sequel would tarnish the franchise. All the people who worked on Freespace are gone.
