Well, he is in one of the best fisheries in the US plus living there all his life he just knows where the good spots are & anyone having the privilege of fishing in Minnesota & the surrounding areas know how good the fishing is there. Been some years but i had a chance to go for two weeks in Itasca County & man was that the best fishing I've had in all my years of enjoying the sport. 🐟

Yeah, it’s 20 degrees here in WV. My poles are still in my car but I am probably done for the year. Caught my PB smallie a few weeks ago on a 25 min fishing expedition on my way to a football game.
My current shifts at work have stopped me from fishing for a while. I use fishing to help with my anxiety and I truly miss the calmness it give me. Your videos have been helping me :)

It’s funny. I took ten years off from fishing and got back into it after back surgery and retiring from the police dept. this was 2019/2020 and I would search for whopper popper videos and came across your channel when you only had a few thousand subs. Still my favorite fishing channel and it’s good to see you hitting the dam and spillways on foot for a change. I imagine the fishing pressure is high in these areas and you still manage to catch a good number and quality of fish. As always, keep up the good work. It’s also cool to see your daughter growing up on facebook and I too, know how tough it is to balance work, family, and fishing.
I have a tandem kayak I hope to bring her out on next summer! She loves nature and critters so I’m sure she’ll have a blast once she gets used to being in a kayak.

It's pretty cool yall have places like this to fish... I've got the rigged out bass boat today but pond hopping and bank walking is how I got into fishing. With all the private property and the insane fishing pressure we have around here where I live unless you have access to someone's private pond you can't really do this kind of fishing. Same here. I've fished this same combo in lakes outside the Twin Cities without much luck. I feel like it sinks much faster than a senko worm on a smaller hook.
@@Jetrojack04I have used every lure you can for smallmouth Ned rigs, neko rigs, wacky rigs, Texas rigs, whopper ploppers, popper frogs, jig and soft plastic, bitsy bug jigs. But I live in rice county so it’s very hard to catch them down here. They are so picky and I’ve even used live worms on a simple bobber setup but they still won’t bite. All I get is bullheads. And I know there’s smallies in there since I see people catching them the simple bobber set up and a worm. I might just be very unlucky I’ve only caught 2 that were less than half a pound so like 0.25 pounds was my biggest

Watching this video especially makes me wish I could visit that exact same spot and try my trout spoons. They've worked surprisingly well on smallies out here in the Intermountain West. But we don't grow our smallies that big in the mountain reservoirs.
You really need to get on the Drop/Ned bandwagon. Those fish that would not eat the wacky worm would take a Drop/Ned rig I can guarantee you. Best of all you get 2 at once many times with it, as the chasers will eat that second bait. Just in case you don't know what the Drop /Ned rig is, I tie up a #1 EWG gammy worm hook with a long tag like a drop shot, but instead of putting on a drop shot weight, I tie on a weedless EWG Ned jig on about a foot below the top bait and put a finesse turd worm on both hooks. Copper cruse and PB & J are my best colors. This is a killer rig that absolutely sleighs the Smallies. I get 60+ fish trips a lot with about 10 doubles on the day. My best day I got 94 in 4 hours
*I recently fished in a tournament with* a friend of my dad's. This guy no lie spent 7 hours throwing a yellow Zoom trick worm (wacky) at shallow structure and docks. He threw a topwater a couple of times but other than that, he threw that wacky yellow trick worm for about 7 hours nonstop. I lost count of how many bass he caught. He lost his 2 best fish, otherwise we would've probably placed second in the tournament. It was really bad luck losing those two bass, but I definitely realized that I've been overlooking the wacky rig my entire life.
I was there for about an hour. Just waiting for the rain clouds to move past, I didn’t want to get soaked in the cold a mile from the launch in my kayak. This is the same day I fished the grasshopper popper later at a different spot so it was a pretty good day of fishing!

I went today for about 2 hours. 33 degrees and windy. I thought my reel was broken/jammed until I realized there was an ice cube stuck to my braid. Grabbed my other pole and the guides kept icing up. Sad to say this, but might be done until March
For bank anglers, can't go wrong with a senko type bait & a soft jerkbait...95% of the time i take my kayak, but those times i don't u can guarantee i have those 2 baits in my bag for sure
Did something happen to you like when you left the rod sit on the kayak while youre swimming the kayak, and the lure was a bit in the water still and a bass or pike came attack it for a reason. Tight Lines!!!!

It used to be great down there but that stretch of river had a lot of fish die off a few years back when we had a couple harsh winters and they shut down a power plant that kept their wintering spot warm. Above the dam there’s a couple deep holes and a lot more fish.
I have stuck with Peanut butter and jelly Yamamoto 5" 'ers and have had them yank the worm off the hook at the top of the water. I ofter go through a bag of them in a fishing trip.
@ndyakangler I use rings, but I hav had fish hit hard enough to send the worm 3 feet up the line. They seam to love the purple and brown with blue and red flakes.
QUESTION for you Matt. With both largies and smallies in the same waters, do you ever see any "MeanMouth" hybrids? LOVE seeing this "shore fishing" content...I learned a few things I didn't know about being a bit more subtle on my approach to the water's edge.

I mostly use jigs, wacky worms, and jerkbaits once the topwater bite is done. If the sun is shining or it’s warm I’ll toss the wacky worm around shallow weed edges. Colder days and later into fall slowly hopping or dragging a jig around rocks and deep structure usually gets me a bunch of fish.
It used to be decent but that stretch has mostly died off since they shut down a power plant at the opposite end. There’s not much of a wintering hole on that stretch so the warm water discharge kept those fish alive through our long cold season. Since then the spawn areas that used to be loaded with 20” fish in the spring have been empty.
I use 3/8” 3M clear heat shrink, got it off Zoro.com last time but you might be able to find it on Amazon now. It’s been several years since I had to order some. A 10 pack of 6” pieces lasts me a long time.
Man I just found your channel. Smallmouth bass are my favorite fish in the world. I live in Missouri and they're not very big in the Ozarks. Got the fish basswood lake in Minnesota and now I can just dream of moving North. What state do you live in??
They follow the hooked fish up hoping it will cough up the meal it’s struggling with, until they get close enough to see me then they’re usually gone or they’ll hang around and refuse to bite.
That was just a really quick recast into the tunnel haha! I actually pulled a really nice smallie out of there last year with a mimic minnow, then like eight rock bass.
This video was filmed over a month ago, a lot can change week by week this time of year. This spot is probably iced over by now most of the lakes in the area are at least.
Glad to see you have a new way to transport the kayak. Much easier than towing something. I just toss mine in the back of my 8 foot bed with the tailgat down.
They always need to eat! Bass slow down quite a bit once the water temp drops to around 40 degrees but I’ll still catch them through a hole in the ice.

We just fished Lake Erie and caught mostly 5+ pounders. Largest was 5-14. Caught over 30. what fun that was.

Last time I was in Canada the lake we were fishing had Smies in it and the smallest small. We got 5 pounds.

That’s my biggest issue when the temp drops below freezing. At least it got down to single temps quick this year and it’s making some good ice!

I’ve seen a couple that might have been hybrids. They looked more like a largemouth but had a smaller mouth like a smallie.

When you are using a wacky worm what pound test line do you use
I use 15lb braid with 5-6’ of 12lb fluoro leader.

They follow the hooked fish up hoping it will cough up the meal it’s struggling with, until they get close enough to see me then they’re usually gone or they’ll hang around and refuse to bite.

This video was filmed over a month ago, a lot can change week by week this time of year. This spot is probably iced over by now most of the lakes in the area are at least.
Glad to see you have a new way to transport the kayak. Much easier than towing something. I just toss mine in the back of my 8 foot bed with the tailgat down.

They always need to eat! Bass slow down quite a bit once the water temp drops to around 40 degrees but I’ll still catch them through a hole in the ice.
