      Well, he is in one of the best fisheries in the US plus living there all his life he just knows where the good spots are & anyone having the privilege of fishing in Minnesota & the surrounding areas know how good the fishing is there. Been some years but i had a chance to go for two weeks in Itasca County & man was that the best fishing I've had in all my years of enjoying the sport. 🐟

    It’s funny. I took ten years off from fishing and got back into it after back surgery and retiring from the police dept. this was 2019/2020 and I would search for whopper popper videos and came across your channel when you only had a few thousand subs. Still my favorite fishing channel and it’s good to see you hitting the dam and spillways on foot for a change. I imagine the fishing pressure is high in these areas and you still manage to catch a good number and quality of fish. As always, keep up the good work. It’s also cool to see your daughter growing up on facebook and I too, know how tough it is to balance work, family, and fishing.

    It's pretty cool yall have places like this to fish... I've got the rigged out bass boat today but pond hopping and bank walking is how I got into fishing. With all the private property and the insane fishing pressure we have around here where I live unless you have access to someone's private pond you can't really do this kind of fishing. Great video as always keepem coming man!!!

      @@Jetrojack04I have used every lure you can for smallmouth Ned rigs, neko rigs, wacky rigs, Texas rigs, whopper ploppers, popper frogs, jig and soft plastic, bitsy bug jigs. But I live in rice county so it’s very hard to catch them down here. They are so picky and I’ve even used live worms on a simple bobber setup but they still won’t bite. All I get is bullheads. And I know there’s smallies in there since I see people catching them the simple bobber set up and a worm. I might just be very unlucky I’ve only caught 2 that were less than half a pound so like 0.25 pounds was my biggest

    You really need to get on the Drop/Ned bandwagon. Those fish that would not eat the wacky worm would take a Drop/Ned rig I can guarantee you. Best of all you get 2 at once many times with it, as the chasers will eat that second bait. Just in case you don't know what the Drop /Ned rig is, I tie up a #1 EWG gammy worm hook with a long tag like a drop shot, but instead of putting on a drop shot weight, I tie on a weedless EWG Ned jig on about a foot below the top bait and put a finesse turd worm on both hooks. Copper cruse and PB & J are my best colors. This is a killer rig that absolutely sleighs the Smallies. I get 60+ fish trips a lot with about 10 doubles on the day. My best day I got 94 in 4 hours

    • @ndyakangler

He threw a topwater a couple of times but other than that, he threw that wacky yellow trick worm for about 7 hours nonstop. I lost count of how many bass he caught. He lost his 2 best fish, otherwise we would've probably placed second in the tournament. It was really bad luck losing those two bass, but I definitely realized that I've been overlooking the wacky rig my entire life.

    I have stuck with Peanut butter and jelly Yamamoto 5" 'ers and have had them yank the worm off the hook at the top of the water. I ofter go through a bag of them in a fishing trip.

      I use a piece of clear heat shrink as a worm saver and run the hook through that. It works great to keep the worm for several fish!

      @ndyakangler I use rings, but I hav had fish hit hard enough to send the worm 3 feet up the line. They seam to love the purple and brown with blue and red flakes.

    QUESTION for you Matt. With both largies and smallies in the same waters, do you ever see any "MeanMouth" hybrids? LOVE seeing this "shore fishing" content...I learned a few things I didn't know about being a bit more subtle on my approach to the water's edge.

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  Місяць тому +1

      I’ve seen a couple that might have been hybrids. They looked more like a largemouth but had a smaller mouth like a smallie.

    Never fails
    Keep them in the sardine juice

    Love your content! Thanks to you, I have become addicted to top water smallie fishing. 😊
    I live in PA where it is now 28 degrees. Do you have a recommendation of what to use for cold water smallies?

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  Місяць тому +3

      I mostly use jigs, wacky worms, and jerkbaits once the topwater bite is done. If the sun is shining or it’s warm I’ll toss the wacky worm around shallow weed edges. Colder days and later into fall slowly hopping or dragging a jig around rocks and deep structure usually gets me a bunch of fish.

    How's the fishing below the dam?

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  Місяць тому

      It used to be decent but that stretch has mostly died off since they shut down a power plant at the opposite end. There’s not much of a wintering hole on that stretch so the warm water discharge kept those fish alive through our long cold season. Since then the spawn areas that used to be loaded with 20” fish in the spring have been empty.

      I use 3/8” 3M clear heat shrink, got it off Zoro.com last time but you might be able to find it on Amazon now. It’s been several years since I had to order some. A 10 pack of 6” pieces lasts me a long time.

    Man I just found your channel. Smallmouth bass are my favorite fish in the world. I live in Missouri and they're not very big in the Ozarks. Got the fish basswood lake in Minnesota and now I can just dream of moving North. What state do you live in??

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  Місяць тому +1

      They follow the hooked fish up hoping it will cough up the meal it’s struggling with, until they get close enough to see me then they’re usually gone or they’ll hang around and refuse to bite.
