I dig that he wore that same shirt for one of his stints in Dictionary Corner. And why don't they let him play Catsdown? Because Jon doesn't want to give up being the smart one, probably.
The thing with Catsdown is that they tend to give them easier letters (you can tell from what crops up on it compared to regular Countdown that its made t be easier for the comedians), so it probably wouldn't be that hard for Alex to do very well. But Jon is also very good at the math and regular Countdown has a lot more word rounds that Catsdown. It's hard to judge based on this episode how good Alex is with him numbers as he didn't get the first numbers round and the second was easy (I can tell because I managed to get it, lol). But I will also say Jon was on the show when Alex was helping out Rachel and Alex did get a 9-letter word and Jon did a little celebration for Alex, in-lieu of the fact that he'd never managed to get a 9-letter word which was nice. He could have just left it and said nothing but he let Alex have a nice little moment.
At the point where Carol says "Oh dear" in the first letters round on this video, the letter she then selects makes a six-letter word on the board: POLITY. So it's not actually as bad as it appears. And there is ultimately a seven-letter word: INEPTLY. In the numbers round, it's a case of obvious answer is obvious, but alternatives are thin on the ground because there's only one odd number on the board and an odd target number. If you use the odd number for anything other than the final stage of the solution, you must find another odd number somehow. One way to do that is to use the 100 to make 25: 10 x 9 = 90 90 + 8 = 98 98 x 6 = 588 100 / 4 = 25 588 + 25 = 613 Another way is this: 8 / 4 = 2 100 + 2 = 102 102 x 6 = 612 10 - 9 = 1 612 + 1 = 613 Or you can massively undershoot the target like this: 10 x 8 = 80 80 + 4 = 84 84 x 6 = 504 504 + 100 + 9 = 613 But these latter two solutions vividly demonstrate the difficulty in that they use the 9 in the last or next-to-last step. I'm sorry that this is the only available game with Alex Horne in it. I'd have liked to have seen his other three games.
If you haven't read Alex Horne's book about words, you're really missing out on some clever fun. If your local library doesn't have it, it's well worth spending some honk on a used copy!
@@Orangecatinahoodie It’s still sitting there under the video and notifications work exactly the same for any comment. But why are you commenting on the matter at all? It’s putting a downer on a light-hearted moment.
When the host said Alex meeting all those people must've been a massive "task". A little light turned on over Alex's head.

"...Say that again."
Is this why they don't let him play on the Teams on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown?
IT’S LITTLE ALEX HORNE!!!
Little Alex Horne won!!! Well done that little man!
"Spent lots of honk" That joke didn't come to fruition for like another 10 years.
Indeed, what a legend!

If you use the odd number for anything other than the final stage of the solution, you must find another odd number somehow. One way to do that is to use the 100 to make 25:
10 x 9 = 90
90 + 8 = 98
98 x 6 = 588
100 / 4 = 25
588 + 25 = 613
Another way is this:
8 / 4 = 2
100 + 2 = 102
102 x 6 = 612
10 - 9 = 1
612 + 1 = 613
Or you can massively undershoot the target like this:
10 x 8 = 80
80 + 4 = 84
84 x 6 = 504
504 + 100 + 9 = 613
But these latter two solutions vividly demonstrate the difficulty in that they use the 9 in the last or next-to-last step.

I applaude u for this great explanation
Yes im aware this comment is years old but nevertheless i feel i must congratulate this person
The real question everybody wants to know the answer to is: where is Jeremy now?
Whose got dogdy eyes and slithered his way to a Countdown championship? Oh look....ITS LITTLE ALEX HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNE!
OPENLY

Got a 7 on the first game: INEPTLY.
Not a bollo performance at all.
Countdowngoofs last episode! :(
Omg #taskmaster
The so called comedian in the corner is so much less funny than the contestant. Awkward
Alex beat me by 11, dammit.
