    Many have kindly pointed out that the odd quirk regarding the door locking/key fob is actually a timer. If working correctly it will not automatically lock the doors if a door is opened within the allotted time. I have been under the impression that it was related to the key fob being detected by the vehicle simply because the system doesn't work on mine for some strange reason. Even if I open a door, it will still automatically lock. Perhaps I have a bad door jam sensor.

    -Endless hatch problems with roll down window too
    -Rack and pinion steering premature failure
    -Lower ball joints do need replaced slightly sooner than some trucks
    -Oil pressure sensor failure
    Those are literally the only problems I've ever experienced with a 300 plus thousand mile Toyota Sequoia.

    A couple of things to note. Early sequoias have a (slightly) less complicated 4wd system. It's essentially the same, but the transfer case 4Hi/Lo is not a dash button, rather it is a mechanically connected shifter in the console. The only part that can be a little confusing is the center differential locking system.
    Also, if you purchase a gen 1 sequoia with air suspension, convert it to springs, it's not hard to do and will save you money down the road.
    I've had my 2002 Sequoia for 150,000 miles now. I bought it with 150,000 and am now at 300,000.

    My 04 had similar problems with the paint/clearcoat. There were sections where the clear was peeling like yours is, and I actually had base coat cracking off the hood. Despite using professional grade detailing products and techniques, the paint was trash. I finally broke down and paid a shop to do the prep/paint/clear for me and despite not wanting to spend thousands on a vehicle with occasional use and high mileage, I couldn’t be happier with the results !

      Led headlight bulbs are not proper for this vehicle. They are brighter but scattered. You really need to do a projector retrofit. Mine was expensive but they have cheaper options.

    • @skipgumphrey9579

      I’m not sure why either would be an issue. The fairly cheap $48 led lights I got from Amazon are working GREAT on my truck and they’ve been in use for years without knowing anything about the low power hack, or noticing any light scatter. I love them !

  • @davidkaminski615
    @davidkaminski615 2 роки тому +48

    There is a timer with the door locks. If you hit the unlock button, but don't open any of the doors, it relocks the vehicle after a set amount of time. It's not dependent on the distance of the fob from the vehicle (it isn't that smart, at least for my '02 it's not).
    Edit: I noticed your rear wiper does not return to it's perch. This may be why you're having trouble with lowering your rear window. If it's not in it's resting position, it could be not allowing the window to roll down. OEM wiper replacement include the seat guide on them and they're $20~.

    • @TheFraziers
      @TheFraziers  2 роки тому +3

      I mentioned this to another commenter, but I’m fairly certain ours doesn’t relock upon a consistent time or even if I actually open a door, it’ll still lock at an inconsistent time. I think something weird is going on with ours.
      The only time the rear window has an issue, is if the battery gets disconnected.

    • @shaboyprince
      @shaboyprince 2 роки тому +2

      I second this. My 06' will stay unlocked if you hit unlock and open a door. If it's locked and you hit unlock, but don't open any doors, it will re-lock itself, regardless of where the fob is.

    • @xItzEpicDx
      @xItzEpicDx 2 роки тому

      @@TheFraziers definitely sounds like yours is having an issue, I work at a Toyota dealership and can confirm it’s on a timer system for doors not opened my 03 limited will relock the doors if I don’t open a door after unlocking from key fob. Definitely on a timer.

    • @C0rp0r4l
      @C0rp0r4l 2 роки тому +1

      This is correct. The rear window issue is some kind of safety feature I think. If it detects the rear wiper is not in a resting position it disables the rolling of the rear window. If you install a rear wiper without the added bracket to nest it into the door holder it detects the weight of the blade arm on the motor and thinks it's resting directly on the window and activates the safety. You can actually get silicone rear wiper blades and remove the actual rubber/silicone blades and put them on your stock OEM wiper blade (with bracket).

    The secondary air pump CEL. Hewitt technology makes a bypass circuit so you don’t need to do an 8 hour job to replace it, since it isn’t necessary in the first place. The bypass kit cost the same as the replacement parts when I did it. Took about 45 minutes.

    Traction control problems may be a sign of bad O2 sensors. When the O2 sensors fail, they send a fault to the Trac control.

    • @jonbrandt9141
      @jonbrandt9141 Рік тому +6

      While the O2 sensors are a common cause of emissions system errors, they are not the only possible source. It seems that any emissions code will deactivate functions of the traction control system. In my case it was related to the evaporative recirculation (charcoal canister and valves). GX470, but same basic system.

    Had our 2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4WD from day 1. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Have been locked out a few times so have learned not to leave key in car. Now just replacing items as they break. Door handles, light covers, back window wire. No problem with peeling paint on the body - but whatever is over the silver part going around the windows (plastic) is almost completely broken off. So I bought a can of rubber paint and will paint it. Maybe you can try and use this in a future video.

    Great info in your video. Did not know about the diff breather issue but that kit you recommended is a life saver. Also the traction control solution of pulling the small plug on the cylinder reservoir is key. The 2001 and 2002 Sequoia has traction control that breaks any slipping wheel so if you are in lots of mud the TC will break all 4 wheels and you get pretty stuck. Unplugging that terminal is the only solution to allow your wheels to spin and clear and gain momentum. Thanks as always for giving us such useful, informative as well as enjoyable videos. Cheers!

    We have The 02 Sequoia, and I agree with the issues you pointed out, though I live in the North East Snow Belt region of The USA, and our Sequoia has rot along the rear wheel well, as you open the passenger doors, its right there on the right. I wired brushed all cut out some of that rot, cleaned it up using fresh water, coated the metal with rust oleum metal spray paint, and brushed on some thick layer of lithium grease over the painted surfaces, and I have to say, she's held up so far. we bought her brand new, and she has 178,000 miles on it, and its the Limited Edition.

      This is when having a AAA Membership can literally save your ass. I believe every driver
      ( and Non-drivers also ) should all have a membership. It is affordable, it is ideal, and it can save your butt in various, unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances.
      For about a $100 each year, you get more than just peace of mind. Like if you are not in the mood to change that heavy ass tire in the event of a flat, they will send someone who will gladly provide assistance and do it for you.
      Its a must have in my opinion. And if you have children who are now driving on their own, you can rest assured, knowing they will not be left stranded on the side of the road, or end up paying a ridiculous
      amount of money for a tow.

      Some previous owner may have installed a "beeper" alarm in the vehicle as a safety device. These are aftermarket devices or replacement bulbs, and can be installed to alert pedestrians when a vehicle is backing up. UPS trucks, delivery vans, use them. Because of the Sequoia's size, an owner may install them (especially if they have small kids in family). These can be something small, like a button, that is inserted in the tail light, between the light bulb and socket, so it only beeps when the reverse light is on, when vehicle is put in reverse. Or it can be a bulb design, that contains the beeper. So, I would ask someone to stand by the taillights, and when you put your vehicle in reverse, see if the beep sound is coming from one (or both) of the tail light assemblies. If so, take them apart and look for a small button or housing by the bulb. Or, I would simply keep them.
      If I get a large truck, with poor visibility to rear (due to load or trailer or blocked view), I would ADD the beeper to prevent hurting a pedestrian when backing up.
      Here is a link to one such device, so you can see what I mean:

Half the spark plugs were loose and they were so loose there was carbon visible from blowby on the insulator part of the spark plugs. So loose I unscrewed them by hand. Anyways mine does the same thing and this didn't fix the issue. It made it better, but it's hardly noticeable, very mild kinda wobble/shake at around 1200rpm

As of 2009 NHTS still doesn't see them as required and has continued to turn down GMs requests to require them. And personally I really appreciate that because on my FJCruiser there was a similar plug to the one on the sequoia that would turn on the always on headlights. The frame rust got me on my 06. It started making noise with suspension travel IE heavy breaking and cornering. Got underneath to check it out and the front sway bar was hanging on one side. Had to remove the front sway bar because where it mounts to the frame was completely rusted through.
    Now there's a big gaping hole in the frame and the VSC kicks on during sharp/fast corners and it's a little less stable at higher speeds. But I don't care at this point I'll drive it til the wheels fall off, I love it. But it's sad knowing the engine will by long and far outlast the rest of the truck. She only has 200k :(
    Also replaced the rear hatch handle assembly when I got it (it still worked, just precaution) and made sure to lube the crap out of it. 3 years later and it still feels like new.
