My brother rolled over in Sequoia with 75k miles. Insurance totaled it. I bought it back for $1,200. Fixed 2 back windows and dents repaired for $1,900. It now has 426k miles.
As a professional mechanic I can tell you that these trucks are extremely reliable. I have personally seen several with 3-400k miles with no major problems.
Finally someone is talking about the first gen! I bought one used when our kids were young and we did road trips to California. I researched suvs before and I bought it for exactly the reasons you are talking about. -bulletproof engine -huge space even with 3 rows -very well engineered We bought a small travel trailer and rowed it all over. The kids are all older and driving now so I just sold it. It's by far, the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. I still miss it.
@@bonohyogurt if you are looking at 4wd model, 05-07 has push button 4wd. previous yrs have a 4wd shifter in the center console taking up all that storage area for those long trips...
Got me a 05 back in Aug. I couldn't pass it up. It was the year I wanted because its the motor with 282 hp. Sitting at a BMW dealership for 8k. Clean paint n body. Interior in great condition besides the little RIP on almost drive side bottom leather. Its phantom gray with gray interior. That was another plus. I hate the tan interior. SR5 with leather, sunroof, n rear ratch spoiler. Now it's all lift with new uca, ball joints, lca, kn intake, stoptech brakes n rotors, adjustable sway end links, adjustable rear trailing arms, 17x9 SCS wheels on 33 in Wildpeak MT's. No rust. Also you will pay a premium for one in good shape. Little less for fair or need some work interior or body. I was lucky to find and jumped on it.
My parents bought an '02 Sequoia brand new and still swear it was the best vehicle they've ever owned! This generation is a lot more better looking than the "over-inflated" '08-current generation.
@@nothanks1627 We own a 2004 and bought a 2013, owned them both at the same time. Couple years later, traded the 2013 in and kept the 2004. Something about the change in the wheel base made the 2013 feel less reliable in the snow. 2004 is a tank in the snow, and now has over 300k on it.
My aunt had this generation sequoia back in the day. It was very loved. Plenty of room for the kiddos, dead reliable, safe, good in snow. Seems to be the common experience all Sequoia owners have.
I have a 2018 Sequoia and my a/c compressor went out 2 times under warranty. Also my 5.7 ticks like crazy but Toyota refuses to fix it. 1 more year on my lease and I’ll be returning it. I get 16-17 mpg on the highway at 70mph
These engines are awesome. My mother in law bought a 2004 4runner with a 4.7 back in 2008. Its been from East Texas to the middle of Mexico countless times, and my FIL used it to tow his tractor. My SIL still drives the thing every day.... I found a Sequoia in my area with 150K miles for right around $5000. If only I had the cash right now, I would snatch it up!!
Very under appreciated. I have an ‘06 and it won’t die. Yes, It’s a dinosaur that only gets 14 mpg, but it’s roomy, comfortable, and safe-a tank. I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine either, even though I don’t drive it that much anymore.
I've got a 2002 4x4 Limited with 297,000 miles. It's been rock solid reliable. I've put an alternator and a radiator in it, and that's it! Plenty of power and the mileage does not bother me at all. Just drove from Sacramento to San Diego and back a couple of months ago and will be doing it again in a few months. Will also be driving from Sacramento to Lincoln Nebraska next year. Oil changes and gas is all this thing costs me.
My 2002 Sequoia just hit 139,000, with a lot of boat towing. I decided I wanted to drive a SUV not work on it routinely. I have only done oil, air filters, tires, and breaks on it. It's too nice to get rid of and its paid for. Great video, because of its a proven reliability.
@@Boomtowndogs It's great. My boat and trailer weigh about 3800lbs. With the V8 it moves alone very nice with good acceleration and stopping. I added a backup camera and that took all the guess work out of getting the receiver and hitch to line up.
I bought a 2002 Sequoia SR5, brand new. I finally gave it to my granddaughter in September 2020. Never had any issues. In September 2020, that truck went to my granddaughter, and I bought a 2019 Sequoia. You can’t sell me any other vehicle. And, my husband is on his second Tundra.
We have a 02 4x4 Sequoia we love it. We have had it 4 years. We got it with 214k it now has 297k. Still.runs amazing. No oil leaks dont burn oil. I wouldn't hasatate to drive it cross country tomorrow. We take it offroad it does great.
I had a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. I sold it to my brother about 4 years ago and he loves it. I do regret getting rid of it. I am hoping to pick another one up within the year. Best SUV ever.
Just bought a 2002 limited 4x4 with 175.000 miles...I just love it...I'm in the mountains of NC and we're just coming into winter so this vehicle will serve all my needs...Run great!
Mine did too and I did the same but it pulled the cable a little too much and I had to shorten it by making another notch. It took me a while to figure it out because it would work fine until I locked the vehicle. Good luck to anyone out there who has to do the same. I absolutely love this vehicle BTW.
Hey TFL! My wife and I just relocated from Texas to North Carolina about a week and a half ago and bought a 2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4WD for the cross country trip. We towed my wife's much smaller vehicle and had our 3 pups in the back the whole way and we couldn't be happier with our decision to grab this truck. It has approximately 180k miles at this point and still runs incredibly smooth for being almost 20 years old.
I bought a 2001 Sequoia in 2017 after it had been seized in a drug related incident/arrest. got it for $2000.00. It has all the bells and buzzers except heated seats, but it is the 4WD version. It has 180,000 miles on it. this is the most comfortable and reliable vehicle I have ever had in 55 years of driving. this video is my Christmas present! I did not realize I had such an awesome vehicle. the 4.7 liter rocks!!! (and drinks gas like soda pop) I would not have it any other way. at 55 mph cruise I get between 22 and 24 mpg. at 70 mph I get a solid 16 mpg. Luvin' it!! AND, I will never sell it either!!
One of my customers has a gray Sequoia truck and the first time I went to check it out it had 285k miles on it, and a couple months later I met them again and it was already past 330k. You couldn't even tell with how quiet it was and how the interior held up
I smell a series with a 4wd model like you’ve done with the Disco’s and the Touareg. Add an on road mpg loop, a road trip, towing test, off road capabilities stock and then with a lift, and some tires. I’d offer up my 05 4wd as the platform with liability releases, but I’m sure those offers flood your offices everyday.
Id love to see them put maybe a land cruiser from this era up against the most current suv in an offroad situation. The sequoia would be interesting too.
Parents bought one new in 01, I learned to drive in it, bought it from them with 175K miles, sold it at 280K, and not for pennies either. Many of those miles were in the snow or dirt, the 4wd capabilities are underrated for sure (it's got a 2 speed manual transfer case). It had a timing belt service, new shocks and replaced the trunk latch, that's all. No idea where it is now but I'd bet my life it's still running haha. Also the first gens had a solid rear axle, pretty sure the new ones are full independent. I always tell my friends who want a land cruiser to get one of these instead, the extra 10K you'll spend on a LC is not worth the added capabilities imo.
I have actually given thought to getting one of these as a vacation vehicle for my wife and me. The Sequoia is proof that most people are dazzled by flashy things on new, less reliable rigs and not with something that is going to go the long distance.

Toyota land cruisers are still in the upper $20k and $30k range even for a model from the mid 2000s with over 100,000 miles and much more. Says a little bit about how good Toyotas actually are. Same with the lexus counterparts.
My 01 Outback has 500k and still runs like a dream... paint is still good, doors still thunk, all the electrical items are good... AND ITS THE TURBO... no oil burning... it will outlast me. Love Japanese engineering
We bought one 6 months ago with 95k miles. It’s an SR5 with leather seats. Same blue color, though. Great truck so far. Bought it because of the reliability, and I think it will serve that purpose.
Sounds like you got yourself a gem! As I posted in an earlier post.....we own a 2004, and bought a 2013. A few years later, we traded in the 2013 and kept the 2004. You might ask, why keep the 04 over the 13? We felt the 13 (with its larger wheel base) felt less reliable in the snow than the 2004. We drive 45 minutes to work, so when it snows, I need something that can drive further than a couple miles safely in the snow. The 2004 now has over 300k miles.

You overlooked the biggest selling point in my opinion and that is the IIHS study that had this as one of only five vehicles with ZERO driver deaths. It is not just safe on paper, it's real world safe. Taho and Expedition can't say that. The one weak spot it definitely RUST, but Toyota has agreed to replace the frame for most owners with that problem. I have a second generation and I agree that it is under appreciated. I think it's like if the Sienna and the Land Cruiser had a baby. Not quite as off-road ready as the LC, but much easier on my family.
Very cool info on the safety! I have a 2005 sequoia 4wd. Love it. Originally was looking for a 4runner or Tacoma. But this one was half the price. Kids love it on easy trails and camping.
Your reasoning is skewed, its because they sold millions of Expeditions and they are one of safest vehicles available from 2003 on. 1g Sequoia is safe to which is why I own it

Yes, there's a TSB for the frame rust inspection. Mine's been to Hawai'i, Guam, and coastal SoCal. No rust found on official inspections and I've seen mine on a lift. If I don't get 500K out of mine I might be a little disappointed--but I got more than my money's worth out of her.
I own an ‘04 Limited 4WD and I absolutely love it. 168k miles and going strong like a freight train. Just watch out for rust especially on the chassis. Planning on keeping it forever.
When I worked in car sales, my friends mom was looking for a Tahoe. I had a 2005 Yukon and a 2005 Sequoia. The Sequoia was in just about perfect condition. The Yukon was in fairly good condition. I begged her to get the Sequoia, but she said “No, I’m a Chevy girl!” She bought the Yukon. The transmission died only a few months later. The same thing happened on her son’s Tahoe that he bought from my dealership. Of course these were trade-in vehicles and nobody could have predicted it. And I don’t know if the Sequoia had any issues once it had sold. But I’m fairly certain it would have been a much safer bet.
I had an 02 4wd Sequoia. Awesome road trip vehicle. Loved that every single seat could recline independently. Including third row. Very comfortable rig.
Let my 4Runner go at almost 300k. I had a Camry when I bought it. Glad I traded up. Now trying to decide which V8 would be best for towing a small ultra light RV.
I have a 2006 SR5 4X4 with leather and 156k miles purchased 3 years ago. Bought it originally to take my small off-road camper to remote areas. It has been perfect for me. It carries enough extra gear and water to stay out for weeks at a time and has gone anywhere I wanted. Recently crossed a wide, very rocky dry creek bed pulling the camper then straight up a very steep rocky dirt road without missing a beat. It has clearance, torque, is dead reliable and rides really well. Very capable and underrated in my opinion. It's big but not huge. One of those vehicles that's so good and reliable that you never think twice about going anywhere with it.
I know! I'm looking for a 4x4 now. The prices are very reasonable but they are starting to go up in price. 5-6k on average in my area but up to 9k now.
I tell you,Sequoia is a most reliable suv you will ever own. My kids grew up with it on road trips etc. 20 years and over 280k mile mines still kicking!
I drive a 2003 Tundra Limited with the 4.7 engine and it has 235,000 miles and its still going strong. Its been a great truck, and I absolutely love it
Love my 2006 Sequoia 4WD! It has a lot of space inside for truck camping, adventures, etc but also doesn’t feel massive when driving in the city. I have the salsa red color and unfortunately the roof and hood have slight oxidation but other than that the truck has 170k and runs like a dream. Thanks TFL for help with the resale numbers if I ever decide to let her go ;)
Bought my blue limited 4wd 05 with rear captains chairs about 1.5yrs ago now. Extremely reliable and so comfortable, swapped the LBJ’s, tie rods, steering rack, shocks, and rear airbags. I’ve done all my own work except the timing belt and water pump. Mechanic said he couldn’t believe how smooth it runs, has 212k miles. Everyone’s always so surprised with how smooth it rides too whenever they’re in it. Love my tank!
Great Video and I agree, the Sequoia is a great vehicle. Personally, I like the first generation design better than the second gen. We own a 2006 Limited 4WD and absolutely love it. We have 138,000 miles on ours and it is still a great rig. We use it for road trips and a lot of lighter towing and it does fine. Not a powerhouse but adequate power and one of the smoothest power trains ever. Also, we get nearly 20 mpg on the highway. Also, the third row seat is comfortable and usable while still providing decent storage behind the third row. The 4WD system works great - awesome snow vehicle!
My 2002 Sequoia has 380K miles on it as of it today! Changed all spark plugs yesterday and was told it’ll keep going up to another 20 years possibly! It’s still rolling….. 🙌🏽
I just bought a 2006 Limited last year. Looked for one for quite a while, needed the extra space for my family. Mine had 135k miles when I found it and came from an owner who maintained it well and it was super clean. Very happy with the quality of a vehicle that is over 17 years old. Smooth ride, doesn't feel as large as it is on the road. Fantastic vehicles!
That's awesome to hear and congrats btw! Looking to make a similar move, and have been going back and forth on turning in our Caddy XT4 early in favor of something not just with a 3rd row, but something that would go the distance for years to come. As someone that came from a Toyota background, this Sequoia fits the bill...especially the 1st Gen. The only other vehicle I've been going back and forth on is the Lexus GX 470. The Caddy isn't a terrible cat by any means, it's certainly a looker....but reliability wise I just don't know.
I’m actually here because I’m researching and considering purchasing one of these. This video was super helpful. Before I was hooked on the idea of a Land Cruiser, Forerunner type mix. But I’m loving these more and more. Plus they’re affordable. I think that they’re fantastic hidden gems in Toyota’s line, like the IS300 or the GS300
Just bought a 2001 limited 4x4. Not without it's issues though. As of now,,new Radiator, Battery, Headlight control arm,,, and currently having a new front end kit done. Oh,,,and 3 tows. Still love it! Her name is Nurse Nancy!!!
I was considering these before I bought my 4Runner with the same engine. I liked the space and relative "exclusivity", but the V8 4Runner will be better for trails and still have about the same tow capacity.
I purchased a 2002 Toyota Sequoia 4x4 about 3 years ago with 250,000 miles on it. I love it! Very heavy in good way. I Highly recommend it. Lots of space and very comfortable.
This is my exact Sequoia model and color. I love it but I definitely dismissed these in the past. Bought it local a yr ago with only 90k on it. Yes had broken back latch but hubs fixed it himself saving lots of $. Ty for review!
I bought one brand new in 2003. My dad. Bought it from me in 2005 and had it up until July of this year when he bought a new carm we convinced him not to trade it in, and we took it back. It has 196,000 miles, runs soothe like the day I first bought it, And even look pretty good inside and out.
I have a 2006 Sequoia limited edition. Mine came with GPS Nav system and dvd player. I Love it! Still runs like the day I pulled it off the lot. Really been thinking of picking up a new 2021.
Just bought this same vehicle with 4WD. 365,000 miles for $5000 here in NC. Changed the timing belt and transmission service (fluid and filter). I'm looking forward to fitting it out with some lift and KO2's when these tires are done. What do I love the most about it?? The rear window and sunroof. I ride with them both open and love it all day long!
Nice color! The fact that its rust free is amazing. The engine was rated at 282 in 2005, but derated in 2006 to 271 due to more stringent standards. My only complaint with my tundra double cab is the fact that the chassis has a bad tendency to rust. The body has no rust, just faded paint.
I have a 2001 Sequoia on 35" tires, 216k miles. I bought it from one owner, he was a local judge. It has been a great reliable vehicle. Fuel economy isn't terribly worse than the 1998 4runner v6 I had.
I have had a 2001 for about 3 years. I love it. I would not hesitate top jump in and drive it across country. In fact last year I did about 10 times. almost broken in at 248,000 miles. My 2000 tundra only has 287,000 and I bought it new. I wish it was a little easier and cheaper to get some factory parts for the body and interior to keep it up.
@@thesaint9276 make sure to replace the ball joints! A lot of people, myself included have gotten into crashes due to lower ball joint failure on GEN1 sequoias
Just bought an 03 Limited 4wd with only 106k miles on it, replacing my indescribably unreliable 09 JKU that only had 133k miles on it. This video and the comments have me so excited for Sequoia ownership.
Love this SUV, have a 2002 with 346,000 miles on it and the only thing that I've replaced is the timing belt, and of course that terrible rear door latch.

We own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4 which is 20 years old this year. It was originally a Toyota corporate fleet car and we bought it when it was two years old. We just maintain it and keep driving it. It has been our transportation some of our favorite family vacations including from California to Yellowstone and back. We re-did the upholstery and paint in factory jade green with tan leather interior. Minor issue is the 2001 seal in the exhaust manifold and the latch on the rear hatch which is discussed in this video. New radiator at 200k miles new starter motor, and other than that, routine maintenance. We love the sound it makes every day when it starts up. It may next be the car for our 16 year old daughter. Safe and reliable.
I bough my dads sequoia a few months back and its awesome, very underrated rig, have about 230k and im about to do a timing belt and water pump on it, that engine is a thing of beauty, highly recommend anyone to buy one, whether it be a 2wd or 4wd.
I like to think of myself as an expert on the 2001-2007 Sequoia. Only pointers I'd mention are the following. -Replace front ball joints with original Toyota only. -Check for Rust on frame -keep up on timing belt service -When replacing rear door handle, replace the latch, cable, and handle all at once. It's an easy job and was about $175 for original parts. -Enjoy! Not much else to worry about
Parents owned a 2001 limited 2wd sequoia whenever i was an infant and the entire family loved it. I drove it whenever i was in high school and enjoyed putting 130k miles on it!
I have a 2003 Sequoia and the thing is damn-near bulletproof! I bought it used back in 2015 and it was golden from the start! I've put some work into it, though. Standard oil changes and regular maintenance issues, but easy fixes to any worries there. I can't imagine trading my beast in for the next 5-10 years, so again...I'm super stoked on the 2003 Sequoia SUV...or any other SUV.
How come nobody has mentioned fuel economy miles to the gallon all around and on the highway or off-road? What is the miles per gallon with these things? And is one generation different with the economy than the other? I'm talking four-wheel-drive? Thanks
I had an 05' . One of the best, most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. My kids are all grown now and so it was just too big and decided to part with it. I regret that decision now. Super easy to work on, easy to get parts.
Yep, prices climbed pretty high. Got mine (GX470) recently and have zero complaints. Even after a timing belt/water pump replacement I just did, the truck is still worth the price!
@@carholejabroni3607 Yeah they do... The Lexus LX570 is basically a Land Cruiser... Only a tiny bit smaller (shorter in length) than the 2nd gen Sequoia, but not by much.

I LOVE my 2007 Toyota Sequoia! I have a 4wd Limited. Mine has over 200k miles & still running great! The one feature mine and a friend of mine have had problems with is that the flat tire light is stuck on & the radio often doesn't work when it's cold.
They are expensive, I was looking for one a couple years ago. Anything with low miles was more than I wanted to spend on the year of the vehicle. Plus they have timing belts that are very expense to replace. I ended up with a GX460.
yea these are much more expensive (to purchase and upkeep) comparing to something like a Honda Pilot during the mid-2000s (even now in used markets), these sequoias (LX, GX, and Land Cruisers), although seemed roomy, are actually not practical compared to other 3-row SUVs, lacks folding flat 3rd row seats (magic seats) and 2nd row folds upwards instead of being flat. Reliability wise, my pilot has 200k miles with original engine and trans still drives like new, I have seen some guy on Instagram approaching 700k km on the odometer. You can probably get a decent 1st gen Honda pilot used for 3k-5k CAD or 2k-4k USD lol. Plus, you're gonna get 20 mpg on the highway and about 17 mpg in the city if you are easy on the pedal, comparing to sequoias 12/15 mpg.
@@kpokfposkf Honda Pilot's don't compare at all. They are FWD based unibody SUV's with a little V6. Yes they are fine for most people but they are not a towing, over landing, off road vehicle in the slightest.
I like the sequoia but I’m worried about the frame rotting and that’s why we stuck with the expedition. I live in western NC and behind every Toyota dealership you can see 3-4 brand new frames waiting to be swapped out for rotten frames on Tacoma’s, sequoias or tundras. It’s great and awesome that Toyota is wiling to swap out the frames but my god that is the back bone of truck. The frame should be the last thing to go.
I have 2003! 268k+ miles on it. I love that it's reliable. I wouldn't buy another one since my kids are grown and will be out of the house. For now, it's perfect for traveling, activites, and shopping! Gotta love Toyota!

Now it's all lift with new uca, ball joints, lca, kn intake, stoptech brakes n rotors, adjustable sway end links, adjustable rear trailing arms, 17x9 SCS wheels on 33 in Wildpeak MT's. No rust. Also you will pay a premium for one in good shape. Little less for fair or need some work interior or body. I was lucky to find and jumped on it.
My parents bought an '02 Sequoia brand new and still swear it was the best vehicle they've ever owned! This generation is a lot more better looking than the "over-inflated" '08-current generation.
I do like the looks of the first gen, but now owning a "brawny" '18 Sumo... the looks grow on you. It definitely looks masculine.

@@nothanks1627 We own a 2004 and bought a 2013, owned them both at the same time. Couple years later, traded the 2013 in and kept the 2004. Something about the change in the wheel base made the 2013 feel less reliable in the snow. 2004 is a tank in the snow, and now has over 300k on it.

I'd take a sequoia any day over the competition. Most comfortable on long trips, and can't beat the reliability.

My aunt had this generation sequoia back in the day. It was very loved. Plenty of room for the kiddos, dead reliable, safe, good in snow. Seems to be the common experience all Sequoia owners have.

I have a 2018 Sequoia and my a/c compressor went out 2 times under warranty. Also my 5.7 ticks like crazy but Toyota refuses to fix it. 1 more year on my lease and I’ll be returning it. I get 16-17 mpg on the highway at 70mph

If I were to buy a full sized SUV, the Sequoia would be the only option for me. They are severely underrated.

These engines are awesome. My mother in law bought a 2004 4runner with a 4.7 back in 2008. Its been from East Texas to the middle of Mexico countless times, and my FIL used it to tow his tractor. My SIL still drives the thing every day.... I found a Sequoia in my area with 150K miles for right around $5000. If only I had the cash right now, I would snatch it up!!
Very under appreciated. I have an ‘06 and it won’t die. Yes, It’s a dinosaur that only gets 14 mpg, but it’s roomy, comfortable, and safe-a tank. I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine either, even though I don’t drive it that much anymore.
I've got a 2002 4x4 Limited with 297,000 miles. It's been rock solid reliable. I've put an alternator and a radiator in it, and that's it! Plenty of power and the mileage does not bother me at all. Just drove from Sacramento to San Diego and back a couple of months ago and will be doing it again in a few months. Will also be driving from Sacramento to Lincoln Nebraska next year. Oil changes and gas is all this thing costs me.

My 2002 Sequoia just hit 139,000, with a lot of boat towing. I decided I wanted to drive a SUV not work on it routinely. I have only done oil, air filters, tires, and breaks on it. It's too nice to get rid of and its paid for. Great video, because of its a proven reliability.

@@Boomtowndogs It's great. My boat and trailer weigh about 3800lbs. With the V8 it moves alone very nice with good acceleration and stopping. I added a backup camera and that took all the guess work out of getting the receiver and hitch to line up.
I bought a 2002 Sequoia SR5, brand new. I finally gave it to my granddaughter in September 2020. Never had any issues. In September 2020, that truck went to my granddaughter, and I bought a 2019 Sequoia. You can’t sell me any other vehicle. And, my husband is on his second Tundra.
We have a 02 4x4 Sequoia we love it. We have had it 4 years. We got it with 214k it now has 297k. Still.runs amazing. No oil leaks dont burn oil. I wouldn't hasatate to drive it cross country tomorrow. We take it offroad it does great.

Takes about 45 minutes to replace the rear handle. Mine broke twice third time I found a metal one on amazon. No issues since.
Mine did too and I did the same but it pulled the cable a little too much and I had to shorten it by making another notch.
It took me a while to figure it out because it would work fine until I locked the vehicle.

Yep did that before at a car dealership. Had two of them in with broken rear door handles. Not too hard
If you replace the latch, cable and handle at once, it will be fixed properly for many years. The handle breaks because the latch gets stiff

My wife and I just relocated from Texas to North Carolina about a week and a half ago and bought a 2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4WD for the cross country trip. We towed my wife's much smaller vehicle and had our 3 pups in the back the whole way and we couldn't be happier with our decision to grab this truck. It has approximately 180k miles at this point and still runs incredibly smooth for being almost 20 years old.
There's a Sequoia parked in the parking lot where I eat lunch every day. I park near it in my humble Ford Escape to catch a vibe.
I bought a 2001 Sequoia in 2017 after it had been seized in a drug related incident/arrest. got it for $2000.00. It has all the bells and buzzers except heated seats, but it is the 4WD version. It has 180,000 miles on it. this is the most comfortable and reliable vehicle I have ever had in 55 years of driving. this video is my Christmas present! I did not realize I had such an awesome vehicle. the 4.7 liter rocks!!! (and drinks gas like soda pop) I would not have it any other way. at 55 mph cruise I get between 22 and 24 mpg. at 70 mph I get a solid 16 mpg. Luvin' it!! AND, I will never sell it either!!

One of my customers has a gray Sequoia truck and the first time I went to check it out it had 285k miles on it, and a couple months later I met them again and it was already past 330k. You couldn't even tell with how quiet it was and how the interior held up
I smell a series with a 4wd model like you’ve done with the Disco’s and the Touareg. Add an on road mpg loop, a road trip, towing test, off road capabilities stock and then with a lift, and some tires. I’d offer up my 05 4wd as the platform with liability releases, but I’m sure those offers flood your offices everyday.
Id love to see them put maybe a land cruiser from this era up against the most current suv in an offroad situation. The sequoia would be interesting too.
Parents bought one new in 01, I learned to drive in it, bought it from them with 175K miles, sold it at 280K, and not for pennies either. Many of those miles were in the snow or dirt, the 4wd capabilities are underrated for sure (it's got a 2 speed manual transfer case). It had a timing belt service, new shocks and replaced the trunk latch, that's all. No idea where it is now but I'd bet my life it's still running haha. Also the first gens had a solid rear axle, pretty sure the new ones are full independent. I always tell my friends who want a land cruiser to get one of these instead, the extra 10K you'll spend on a LC is not worth the added capabilities imo.

Graduations on being well informed my only other suggestion when looking at a Sequoia just in case look for the history of the vehicle and if you’re still not sure see if you can get a mechanic to come with you and check it out also bring a scanner tool that you can plug into the Sequoia just checked the computer. Other than that I don’t think you’ll find anything wrong with the Sequoia if it was

Sounds like you got yourself a gem! As I posted in an earlier post.....we own a 2004, and bought a 2013. A few years later, we traded in the 2013 and kept the 2004. You might ask, why keep the 04 over the 13? We felt the 13 (with its larger wheel base) felt less reliable in the snow than the 2004. We drive 45 minutes to work, so when it snows, I need something that can drive further than a couple miles safely in the snow. The 2004 now has over 300k miles.

You overlooked the biggest selling point in my opinion and that is the IIHS study that had this as one of only five vehicles with ZERO driver deaths. It is not just safe on paper, it's real world safe. Taho and Expedition can't say that. The one weak spot it definitely RUST, but Toyota has agreed to replace the frame for most owners with that problem. I have a second generation and I agree that it is under appreciated. I think it's like if the Sienna and the Land Cruiser had a baby. Not quite as off-road ready as the LC, but much easier on my family.

Yes, there's a TSB for the frame rust inspection. Mine's been to Hawai'i, Guam, and coastal SoCal. No rust found on official inspections and I've seen mine on a lift. If I don't get 500K out of mine I might be a little disappointed--but I got more than my money's worth out of her.
I own an ‘04 Limited 4WD and I absolutely love it. 168k miles and going strong like a freight train. Just watch out for rust especially on the chassis. Planning on keeping it forever.
When I worked in car sales, my friends mom was looking for a Tahoe. I had a 2005 Yukon and a 2005 Sequoia. The Sequoia was in just about perfect condition. The Yukon was in fairly good condition. I begged her to get the Sequoia, but she said “No, I’m a Chevy girl!” She bought the Yukon. The transmission died only a few months later. The same thing happened on her son’s Tahoe that he bought from my dealership. Of course these were trade-in vehicles and nobody could have predicted it. And I don’t know if the Sequoia had any issues once it had sold. But I’m fairly certain it would have been a much safer bet.
I had an 02 4wd Sequoia. Awesome road trip vehicle. Loved that every single seat could recline independently. Including third row. Very comfortable rig.

I have a 2006 SR5 4X4 with leather and 156k miles purchased 3 years ago. Bought it originally to take my small off-road camper to remote areas. It has been perfect for me. It carries enough extra gear and water to stay out for weeks at a time and has gone anywhere I wanted. Recently crossed a wide, very rocky dry creek bed pulling the camper then straight up a very steep rocky dirt road without missing a beat. It has clearance, torque, is dead reliable and rides really well. Very capable and underrated in my opinion. It's big but not huge. One of those vehicles that's so good and reliable that you never think twice about going anywhere with it.
You guys are going to screw up the market in these now too. Like you did on Touregs and old Land Rovers! Knock it off!! 😉

Love my 2006 Sequoia 4WD! It has a lot of space inside for truck camping, adventures, etc but also doesn’t feel massive when driving in the city. I have the salsa red color and unfortunately the roof and hood have slight oxidation but other than that the truck has 170k and runs like a dream. Thanks TFL for help with the resale numbers if I ever decide to let her go ;)
Bought my blue limited 4wd 05 with rear captains chairs about 1.5yrs ago now. Extremely reliable and so comfortable, swapped the LBJ’s, tie rods, steering rack, shocks, and rear airbags. I’ve done all my own work except the timing belt and water pump. Mechanic said he couldn’t believe how smooth it runs, has 212k miles. Everyone’s always so surprised with how smooth it rides too whenever they’re in it.

Great Video and I agree, the Sequoia is a great vehicle. Personally, I like the first generation design better than the second gen. We own a 2006 Limited 4WD and absolutely love it. We have 138,000 miles on ours and it is still a great rig. We use it for road trips and a lot of lighter towing and it does fine. Not a powerhouse but adequate power and one of the smoothest power trains ever. Also, we get nearly 20 mpg on the highway. Also, the third row seat is comfortable and usable while still providing decent storage behind the third row. The 4WD system works great - awesome snow vehicle!
My 2002 Sequoia has 380K miles on it as of it today! Changed all spark plugs yesterday and was told it’ll keep going up to another 20 years possibly! It’s still rolling….. 🙌🏽

I just bought a 2006 Limited last year. Looked for one for quite a while, needed the extra space for my family. Mine had 135k miles when I found it and came from an owner who maintained it well and it was super clean. Very happy with the quality of a vehicle that is over 17 years old. Smooth ride, doesn't feel as large as it is on the road. Fantastic vehicles!
That's awesome to hear and congrats btw! Looking to make a similar move, and have been going back and forth on turning in our Caddy XT4 early in favor of something not just with a 3rd row, but something that would go the distance for years to come. As someone that came from a Toyota background, this Sequoia fits the bill...especially the 1st Gen. The only other vehicle I've been going back and forth on is the Lexus GX 470. The Caddy isn't a terrible cat by any means, it's certainly a looker....but reliability wise I just don't know.
Yes, every one of Toyota's trucks AND cars are underappreciated. There's a reason you see mechanics across UA-cam recommending them.

I’m actually here because I’m researching and considering purchasing one of these. This video was super helpful. Before I was hooked on the idea of a Land Cruiser, Forerunner type mix. But I’m loving these more and more. Plus they’re affordable. I think that they’re fantastic hidden gems in Toyota’s line, like the IS300 or the GS300
My 97 land cruiser is at 678k miles and still running strong. Original engine and trans. Only major repair is the head gaskets at 96k Miles!
My mom had one from 2002 up until 2019 it was the best suv ever we drove it to 300k miles then it finally puttered out

Not without it's issues though. As of now,,new Radiator, Battery, Headlight control arm,,, and currently having a new front end kit done. Oh,,,and 3 tows. Still love it! Her name is Nurse Nancy!!!
I was considering these before I bought my 4Runner with the same engine. I liked the space and relative "exclusivity", but the V8 4Runner will be better for trails and still have about the same tow capacity.
I purchased a 2002 Toyota Sequoia 4x4 about 3 years ago with 250,000 miles on it. I love it! Very heavy in good way. I Highly recommend it. Lots of space and very comfortable.
This is my exact Sequoia model and color. I love it but I definitely dismissed these in the past. Bought it local a yr ago with only 90k on it. Yes had broken back latch but hubs fixed it himself saving lots of $. Ty for review!
I bought one brand new in 2003. My dad. Bought it from me in 2005 and had it up until July of this year when he bought a new carm we convinced him not to trade it in, and we took it back. It has 196,000 miles, runs soothe like the day I first bought it, And even look pretty good inside and out.

Just bought this same vehicle with 4WD. 365,000 miles for $5000 here in NC. Changed the timing belt and transmission service (fluid and filter). I'm looking forward to fitting it out with some lift and KO2's when these tires are done. What do I love the most about it?? The rear window and sunroof. I ride with them both open and love it all day long!
Nice color! The fact that its rust free is amazing. The engine was rated at 282 in 2005, but derated in 2006 to 271 due to more stringent standards. My only complaint with my tundra double cab is the fact that the chassis has a bad tendency to rust. The body has no rust, just faded paint.
The rust seems to only happen in states where they use a lot of salt on the roads.
I have a 2001 Sequoia on 35" tires, 216k miles. I bought it from one owner, he was a local judge. It has been a great reliable vehicle. Fuel economy isn't terribly worse than the 1998 4runner v6 I had.

I have had a 2001 for about 3 years. I love it. I would not hesitate top jump in and drive it across country. In fact last year I did about 10 times. almost broken in at 248,000 miles. My 2000 tundra only has 287,000 and I bought it new. I wish it was a little easier and cheaper to get some factory parts for the body and interior to keep it up.
These are fantastic vehicles, that’s why there values are so stupid high, and I can’t justify spending 15k on a 15 year old vehicle.

Love this SUV, have a 2002 with 346,000 miles on it and the only thing that I've replaced is the timing belt, and of course that terrible rear door latch.

We own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia Limited 4x4 which is 20 years old this year. It was originally a Toyota corporate fleet car and we bought it when it was two years old. We just maintain it and keep driving it. It has been our transportation some of our favorite family vacations including from California to Yellowstone and back. We re-did the upholstery and paint in factory jade green with tan leather interior. Minor issue is the 2001 seal in the exhaust manifold and the latch on the rear hatch which is discussed in this video. New radiator at 200k miles new starter motor, and other than that, routine maintenance. We love the sound it makes every day when it starts up. It may next be the car for our 16 year old daughter. Safe and reliable.
My 2016 Sequoia has been bulletproof. Pulls my 30' trailer with ease. Awesome in snow, great on hunting roads. Hauls everything and ass!

I just purchased the Sequoia my parents bought back in 2002, it has 217k miles! Its moving on to the second generation of my family!
Honestly if we didn't own a 2003 Sequoia, I'd never know how to spell it either.
Completely bulletproof. One of the best platforms ever built bar none. 1st generation tundra and sequoia are without a doubt my favorite. I have both
This and the Lexus GX are underrated.
The GX has gone up in price recently, at least around my area.
I bough my dads sequoia a few months back and its awesome, very underrated rig, have about 230k and im about to do a timing belt and water pump on it, that engine is a thing of beauty, highly recommend anyone to buy one, whether it be a 2wd or 4wd.
I like to think of myself as an expert on the 2001-2007 Sequoia. Only pointers I'd mention are the following.
-Replace front ball joints with original Toyota only.
-Check for Rust on frame
-keep up on timing belt service
-When replacing rear door handle, replace the latch, cable, and handle all at once. It's an easy job and was about $175 for original parts.
-Enjoy! Not much else to worry about

@@jcpoiuy 2008 can be either. Depends what engine. I believe they had a couple choices. 5.7L is a chain.

Parents owned a 2001 limited 2wd sequoia whenever i was an infant and the entire family loved it. I drove it whenever i was in high school and enjoyed putting 130k miles on it!
My 01 has 365k on it, runs great beast in snow
I have a 2003 Sequoia and the thing is damn-near bulletproof! I bought it used back in 2015 and it was golden from the start! I've put some work into it, though. Standard oil changes and regular maintenance issues, but easy fixes to any worries there. I can't imagine trading my beast in for the next 5-10 years, so again...I'm super stoked on the 2003 Sequoia SUV...or any other SUV.
I wish I could daily drive this beast but I just can't afford to spend $60-$80 on gas every week lol
How come nobody has mentioned fuel economy miles to the gallon all around and on the highway or off-road? What is the miles per gallon with these things? And is one generation different with the economy than the other? I'm talking four-wheel-drive? Thanks
I had an 05' . One of the best, most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. My kids are all grown now and so it was just too big and decided to part with it. I regret that decision now. Super easy to work on, easy to get parts.
i'd want a GX470 because it is made in Japan... and has some nice bits... but good luck finding one :(

Yep, prices climbed pretty high. Got mine (GX470) recently and have zero complaints. Even after a timing belt/water pump replacement I just did, the truck is still worth the price!
@@carholejabroni3607 Yeah they do... The Lexus LX570 is basically a Land Cruiser... Only a tiny bit smaller (shorter in length) than the 2nd gen Sequoia, but not by much.
our family has had a sequoia for 14 years and it is a beast. My dad will never sell it despite my offers.

I LOVE my 2007 Toyota Sequoia! I have a 4wd Limited. Mine has over 200k miles & still running great! The one feature mine and a friend of mine have had problems with is that the flat tire light is stuck on & the radio often doesn't work when it's cold.
It’s a beautiful, reliable and expensive SUV.
You can buy one cheap on the used market and it uses regular 87 gas unlike the Lexus GX.

They are expensive, I was looking for one a couple years ago. Anything with low miles was more than I wanted to spend on the year of the vehicle. Plus they have timing belts that are very expense to replace. I ended up with a GX460.
yea these are much more expensive (to purchase and upkeep) comparing to something like a Honda Pilot during the mid-2000s (even now in used markets), these sequoias (LX, GX, and Land Cruisers), although seemed roomy, are actually not practical compared to other 3-row SUVs, lacks folding flat 3rd row seats (magic seats) and 2nd row folds upwards instead of being flat. Reliability wise, my pilot has 200k miles with original engine and trans still drives like new, I have seen some guy on Instagram approaching 700k km on the odometer. You can probably get a decent 1st gen Honda pilot used for 3k-5k CAD or 2k-4k USD lol. Plus, you're gonna get 20 mpg on the highway and about 17 mpg in the city if you are easy on the pedal, comparing to sequoias 12/15 mpg.
@@kpokfposkf Honda Pilot's don't compare at all. They are FWD based unibody SUV's with a little V6. Yes they are fine for most people but they are not a towing, over landing, off road vehicle in the slightest.
I have a 2006 4wd Sequoia and I absolutely love it! At only 167k miles, I know I will have this truck for many years to come. I will never sell it!
I like the sequoia but I’m worried about the frame rotting and that’s why we stuck with the expedition. I live in western NC and behind every Toyota dealership you can see 3-4 brand new frames waiting to be swapped out for rotten frames on Tacoma’s, sequoias or tundras. It’s great and awesome that Toyota is wiling to swap out the frames but my god that is the back bone of truck. The frame should be the last thing to go.
My GX isn’t that bad but it definitely has more than its fair share of rust.

I have 2003! 268k+ miles on it. I love that it's reliable. I wouldn't buy another one since my kids are grown and will be out of the house. For now, it's perfect for traveling, activites, and shopping! Gotta love Toyota!
