Man, that first grader who gave you the false Purple labels really screwed you over. That sucks...So, now we have to add to the potential graders next to Harsh Harry and Loose Larry, Fair Frank (the one who is spot on), Purple Pete (who gives out PLOD'S for no reason) and Butterfingers Bob (who drops and damages books).
I purchased a SS #3 about 15 years ago for around $50. I had it graded by CGC about 8 years ago.It received a blue label 8.0. A few months ago I decided to get it pressed and cleaned to make it present better.I sent it to CGC for a regrade and new slab. Results were an 8.5 A1 PLOD. How??? Did CGC miss restoration 8 years ago? Question is who would pay to Professionally restore a $50 book at the time of purchase? Could the pressing and dry cleaning altered anything? I see no restoration at all under a magnifying glass. After watching your experience I'm wondering if I should crack it and send it in for another try 🤞🏻
You should be a consultant TO CGC on how to grade CGC books! I've seen your work on this channel. You are very precise with what you do. You have a level of obsession to get books to the best they can be. You do multiple cprs and presses with individual books that I don't bother to do and I have the lower grades to prove it! You even made a grading guide based on CGC standards! CGC should pay you to go to Sarasota, put All their graders into a room for six hours, to show them how to grade CGC books!
Wow, thanks for the kind words. And yes, I would love to be given the opportunity to help in any way that I can. This is why I am developing a tool to help people grade, to make the consistency better out there
I hate CGC so much. I stop sending my book to CGC 6 years ago. The worst part is, they will not take responsibilities if they damage your book during the grading process. It pissed me off so much, i hate CGC from the bottom of my heart.
Alot of headaches and bummed trips with slabbed books nowadays. Even my own friends have had many problems with their slabbed books mostly CGC. Thats one of the reasons why I'm staying a raw collector for life. I also adopted your method on storing books, my collection looks way more neat and organized. Thanks love the channel!
Happy they came back blue this time instead of purple. It does kind of scare me how the grades were all over the place compared to what they came back the first time. On a positive note, something good came out of something bad regarding your original presser. Like you said, that's what got you into pressing, cleaning, and even whitening books yourself. You do a mighty fine job at that. Good luck in your future submissions Jim. Always a blast watching your videos.
No idea.. it still makes me sick to my stomach, I had to sell all those books because I didn't want the constant reminder. Thanks, CGC for ruining those books for me
I would crack the slab on that ASM 33 and see if those grader notes truly are for your book. Maybe they mixed something up? Either way, sorry for the disappointed grades but I guess you have to take the bad with the good, and lets be honest, you've been blessed with a lot of good books.
Cgc will nail you on the toasty stuff. I have some beautiful bronze that were stunning but had tanning, all got 7.5 to 8.0 they take that tanning and staining pretty serious 👍

CGC *originally* said that three or four of those books were restored. Is it possible they made a typo and meant 5.2? After watching many of your grading tutorials and unboxings etc. I can't imagine you would be anywhere near that much in error. If you send a 2.5 back for a re-grade and it comes back much higher can you then demand a refund? Recently you had a video on the strategy of Pre-screens. I'm beginning to think that's the way to go as the "power of suggestion" might be successful since that way they make more $$ vs sending it back ungraded. I have high grade FF 52 and ASM 36 but I'm scared to death to send to CGC or anyone for that matter. I just hope my apartment doesn't flood or burn down in the meantime. Have you ever submitted a 5 figure book at the Unlinited Value Tier? They charge 4% of Fair Market Value ($150 min.) which is an incentive for them to grade high especially as a pre-screen? They might handle them more careful too?
I love buying the toasty clean books, the tanning doesn’t bother me as much as spine ticks and color breaks…….Ive bought collections that were new old stock (never read) but stored horribly…..that’s usually where the tanning occurs
My strategy now is to pre-screen everything. I set the lowest grade I’d be happy with (typically go pretty high too) and send them in. Any that get rejected that I’m pretty sure could make it above the pre-screen I send back. Typically it’s graded correctly the next time. It’s total BS that that’s what I’m forced to do.

Sorry this happened. I've watched other cgc reveal videos and the mishandling by cgc seems to becoming a big problem. Fingerprints, cover indentations, bent corners, etc. that weren't there before being submitted.
I just would not gamble with this company. If I want slabs, I buy them. If I sell a raw book, I have the selling power to suggest it might be a candidate for being slabbed, if the buyer is that way inclined. For me, I have no interest in experiencing this kind of rollercoaster. You certainly have had a shock here. Your grading is second to none and I praise you for that.

I submitted a Vampirella #1 (low grade) to CGC. One solid staple and one barely hanging on. I put a large note on it to flag the staple conditions and you know it, the book came back "cover detached". I don't trust CGC with my babies anymore. I'm going to submit to CBCS from now.
I have collected for over 45 years and have never sent a book to be encased but I own 424 graded books at last count letting others roll the dice.I think I may even wait a bit longer before sending my raw comics just to have someone guess the grade of my comics or slap a purple label on a unrestored comic..There is lots of videos now of people resubmitting with no work done and having comics come back with wildly different grades. Restored to not restored takes the cake..What is going on at CGC?
I've only submitted one book to CGC. I felt like the grade was a bit harsher than expect, but I'm not getting into the viscous cycle of resubmitting. I'm sorry your books came back graded so low. I don't think CGC is very reliable and I hope this slabbing trend goes away. Call me old school if you like. Great video as always.
A couple observations: - In my experience be very careful/selective when submitting books with ‘tanning’, they will lite you up on that almost every time and typically books will drop a couple points from what they might otherwise look like. -Assigning restoration should be one part of this process that is NOT subjective. They should not be trying to guess if something is restored, it should be provably present and noted to get purple labeled. Not ‘I think’ this looks too good… -I just received a submission last week and did very well on my expected grades except for one that also came back with a detached staple. I did not have photographic proof. I talked to them and the pleasant woman I spoke with claimed they would definitely let me know if they had damaged my book… luckily it wasn’t a big financial hit. -I don’t know what to do with this company, I have recently spoken with legal council about them. They seem to hold all the cards as it stands in regards to customer treatment.
The trials and tribulations of getting comics graded by CGC. It must have been a sigh of relief to get the purple labels off of those books. I guess now the flipside is they (CGC) appear to have graded them too harshly. Books really have to be pretty trashed to get a 2.5, and that book isn't anywhere near a 2.5.
So many comic book content creators act like professional graders, yet are willing to pay someone else to grade their stuff and are shocked when they don't get what they THINK the grades should be. You knew what you were getting into. Hell, you paid money towards it.
That's crap Jim with your Medusa cover. CGC clearly tried to detect if the cover was cleaned by looking right up at the inside of the book and popping the staples in the process. That's a bunch of BS! Wow, I hope you contact them about the damage to the cover... ASM 33 is my favorite cover of all time, they really hosed you on that grade...
I’m a CBCS guy just due to my LCS using them exclusively and having the same problem with CGC multiple times in the past. That said, this was one of my nightmare scenarios with just the idea of grading, regardless of vendor.
Sorry about the books. I hope you have pictures/scans of the books before. CGC has damaged my books as well so I always take pictures now. You need to contact someone in Customer Service and get some reimbursment. Please do a follow up and let us know. CGC needs to be held accountable.
They "insure" the books up to a certain value and that "insurance" should cover your lost when they drop or damage books. They should be up front about their mistakes. And you should be able to submit your proof of the condition of the books before hand.
Dude. What the HELL with this submission. So sorry this happened again, my friend. What can you even do in a circumstance where it looks like the books were dropped on their end?
I would have just kept the high purple label grades. All that cost and time to try to get them blue label is not worth it. Whether it's purple, blue, green, or yellow labels as long as I have a the book I am happy
I’ve never heard anyone say the grade they got was better than expected. We are all biased with our own books, but grading is inherently subjective and they usually go ultra conservative for the rank and file. I’ve been torched and have removed some from the slab in outrage, but after 45 years of collecting don’t tell me my conservative 7.0-7.5 is a 5.0 I think there is bias, leaning to higher grades for higher paying customers.
Why do people continually send books to CGC? Blackstone owns them, and I will never give them a penny. I sent 20 books to CGC that included three eras: modern, copper, and silver. All books were graded in 12 days and are now on the way back to me. PLUS, when they are graded, I get the graders notes immediately on my account - - for ALL books. The new CBCS labels are fresh -- look fantastic. Why would I send books to CGC when half of the time there aren't even graders notes??
I see what you mean about a rollercoaster unboxing. It really highlights the inconsistencies at CGC not only with the purple labels, but with the grades as well. It also showcases the way books can be mishandled when grading with staples popped on two of the books. Everybody saw they were perfectly fine before you sent them back for regrading. That must be so aggravating for you. Well at least they weren't popped AND purple.
I was horrified to see those grades!!! Something didn’t smell right when we see one of the greatest pressers and cleaners on UA-cam get grades that seamed deliberately done.. You can’t tell me this was legit grades? I’ve lost all respect for CGC and those jokers who are so called graders
I honestly feel bad for you but I think CGC's standards have quality control have fallen so much. There is way to much inconsistency coming from. Overall great books that I would love to have in my PC.
Suggestion: You record via photo/video evidence prior to submission to CGC. For the sake of all of us, They need to take accountability for all mishandling done by them
I stopped playing the CGC game a while ago. Sending in books that are determined to be “restored” and then determined to be “ not restored” sounds like a huge scam. If they claim to be industry experts, how can they be so inconsistent? That right there shows that their grading is inaccurate. Surprised their hasn’t been a class action lawsuit yet.
The very fact that all 3 were given plod for cover cleaning, that they even wrote it on the label, and then this guy just resubmitted and didn’t get it on any of them is proof that cover cleaning cannot be resto….
The reality is that CGC exists to make money from the grading process and associated services. It is NOT there to be an exemplary steward of your collectibles. I really share in your utter disbelief at these results.
This is why I got out of graded comics. Relying on a system to grade books that is not accurate and uses different subjective aspects each time, the graded books is pretty much a joke. The only thing positive from a graded book is to authenticate the book and preserve. Grades are worthless.
You sir, make me have zero confidence in CGC...they apparently can't even follow their own grading standards, and I've heard many stories of them damaging books or mixing up orders. 😢😅
I’m glad to see you post another video but man, those are some bad results at the end. It’s a shame there damaged your books and never said anything about it. Sorry for your luck, but a great video otherwise.
CGC graders need to be retrained there is so much inconsistency in the grades and when they damage your books they just grade it and you take the hit, I would like to know what CGC does about this it seems to an ongoing problem someone need to address it.
I think they're watching your videos! Nah! Idk! Very depressing i can imagine how you feel! 😢 Edit: It's almost like they're doing it on purpose seriously!
I can see it.. my books arrive and someone yells "ANOTHER BATCH FROM THAT UA-camR GUY.... CATCH!" As he throws it across the warehouse to his buddy who punts it back.
youve gotta submit a claim on these or something, tell them the whole story and let them see their insanity, you likely have the documentation to back up the claim and how schitzophrenic they were on these books
I tried it on another submission, and the time I spend doing that takes away from my cleaning and pressing time, which costs me more money.. so it's a lose-lose situation for me
I do not understand how purple label books came back with blue labels. That means they were not purple label in the first place. Sounds like they man handles your books as well.
I like some of the videos on this channel, but when it gets to the point of "restored" and trying to get past harsh harry by trickery, I believe this hurts whomever purchases that slab, when so much "extra" work and alteration has been done to the comic, that comic buyer is literally NOT getting what they're paying for.
It pains me that sellers are enslaved by CGC. It perplexes me why collectors take a chance on having their books ruined time and time again for that extra price bump.
And yet people keep submitting to cgc and if people sell books they get value if it’s cgc but if it’s egs pgx cbcs value is cut in half to less I’m that’s right out buy ps5 at Best Buy for 400 you will see same price for system for 400 at Walmart target it sells same same dam thing with comics cgc egs pgx cbcs graded comics should sell for same fucking value people pay company out there logo on label that’s all there doing
It's time to bring business to another company. Cgc is getting shady in every aspect. Dont pay for for them to personally press your books? Seems the grade is affected. Etc.

Ugh bad break on ASM 161. CGC needs to make a video on their website and at least generally have a grade books !
You got a beating. They graded your books while skydiving.
LMAO
A couple observations:
- In my experience be very careful/selective when submitting books with ‘tanning’, they will lite you up on that almost every time and typically books will drop a couple points from what they might otherwise look like.
-Assigning restoration should be one part of this process that is NOT subjective. They should not be trying to guess if something is restored, it should be provably present and noted to get purple labeled. Not ‘I think’ this looks too good…
-I just received a submission last week and did very well on my expected grades except for one that also came back with a detached staple.
Yeah that box we check when we submit books probably protects them legally... they force us to 'submit at our own risk'
I am definitely not a pro grader, but some would argue that the inconsistency means that the pro graders aren't pro either
I really like the new CBCS labels, so I may try them
Sorry about the books.
Beg and whine, but it doesn't get me anyway lol
Sucks when they mess up my books had damage happen to 4 books & all were bad, if they had that damage prior i would have never sent them in
Another reason to leave your books raw. This video makes me terrified to trust CGC with any of my books.
Yeah it's a scary thing.. tough to get over this stuff
I would have just kept the high purple label grades. All that cost and time to try to get them blue label is not worth it. Whether it's purple, blue, green, or yellow labels as long as I have a the book I am happy
cgc grading is all over the place...they are no way in line with each other.. but we are locked into the grading gods.. so what do you do....
I don't slab but still think sometimes comics get a switch-er-oo
That Spidey book was destroyed……..damn!!!
I’ve never heard anyone say the grade they got was better than expected. We are all biased with our own books, but grading is inherently subjective and they usually go ultra conservative for the rank and file. I’ve been torched and have removed some from the slab in outrage, but after 45 years of collecting don’t tell me my conservative 7.0-7.5 is a 5.0
I think there is bias, leaning to higher grades for higher paying customers.
You are indeed 💯 correct. I’ve seen it from others who go at these so called gimeee grades
Why I’ll never send my raw books to CGC.
CBCS is looking a whole lot better. I may just send all my comics to them if CGC is this bad.
For the sake of all of us, They need to take accountability for all mishandling done by them
I’m so sorry for this. Those comics were in great condition, and to get them back in those conditions is outrageous. CGC are losing the plot..
Maybe they ran out of Blue Labels that day?
LOL makes as good a sense as anything
Wow this on sucks for you. Keep on going and doing your fine work. Not great on CGC consistency.🖖🏾
Inconsistency is the main problem with the grading system. Time for AI grading
Take the 2.5 out of slab - looks like high grade books were hit by tanning - very inconsistent
The pain I felt when I saw your face, oof, that is so rough. If you decide to sell the 6.5 let me know Id be interested.
I appreciate that. And it's gone already.. I couldn't stand to look at them anymore. Thanks for the offer, though :)
Strikes and gutters, man. This might be misdirected karma for the astounding X-MEN 9.6 you got.
The x-men wasn't my book so I hope not lol
The reality is that CGC exists to make money from the grading process and associated services. It is NOT there to be an exemplary steward of your collectibles. I really share in your utter disbelief at these results.
This is why I got out of graded comics. Relying on a system to grade books that is not accurate and uses different subjective aspects each time, the graded books is pretty much a joke. The only thing positive from a graded book is to authenticate the book and preserve. Grades are worthless.
Makes ya wonder if they watch the videos? 🤷🏻
Man...sorry Jim. I watch a few other UA-camrs and there's been reports on their channels of CGC mishandling books recently.
Yeah some changes need to be made in both the way they handle books and quality control
Interesting experiment frustrating that you had to resubmit books to get the purple label removed. It's like two steps forward three steps back.
It’ll be okay next time. 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
They dropped that book man and gave you a crap grade for the damage they caused so sorry very cool books
Maybe time for a break. You almost wonder if they are your books!
Ale photos to prove they are your books next time
CGC graders need to be retrained there is so much inconsistency in the grades and when they damage your books they just grade it and you take the hit, I would like to know what CGC does about this it seems to an ongoing problem someone need to address it.
Holy smokes! Your grader must have just found out his wife was cheating on him and then he ran over his dog on the way to work!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think they're watching your videos! Nah! Idk! Very depressing i can imagine how you feel! 😢
Edit:
It's almost like they're doing it on purpose seriously!
I can see it.. my books arrive and someone yells "ANOTHER BATCH FROM THAT UA-camR GUY.... CATCH!" As he throws it across the warehouse to his buddy who punts it back.
Man... resubmit that ASM 62. you were robbed man.The grader must have been going through a divorce and he took it out on you.
I'd be firing an email off to CGC saying they lost a customer
They don’t care. They know you either grade with them or
Make it less valuable
youve gotta submit a claim on these or something, tell them the whole story and let them see their insanity, you likely have the documentation to back up the claim and how schitzophrenic they were on these books
I tried it on another submission, and the time I spend doing that takes away from my cleaning and pressing time, which costs me more money.. so it's a lose-lose situation for me
Wow, you got screwed. Almost makes you wonder if it's just a waste of time sending things in...
I would never resubmit a book if I didn't think it was the grade I was going for. But borderline 9.6/9.8 are worth a resubmit
Definitely heartbreaking. Terribly mishandled. 😠 😡
...and they will continue to drop your books without any consequence to themselves. Remember that.
Sorry about that book😢
You obviously got F'ing Frank at CGC. He is known to do that to people.
Wait, there is a guy there known for this stuff? lol
ASM 62
I’m sorry they were harsh graders
It pains me that sellers are enslaved by CGC. It perplexes me why collectors take a chance on having their books ruined time and time again for that extra price bump.
And yet people keep submitting to cgc and if people sell books they get value if it’s cgc but if it’s egs pgx cbcs value is cut in half to less I’m that’s right out buy ps5 at Best Buy for 400 you will see same price for system for 400 at Walmart target it sells same same dam thing with comics cgc egs pgx cbcs graded comics should sell for same fucking value people pay company out there logo on label that’s all there doing
Damn! You must have dated their sister in the past, or something. Those are some serious harsh grades they gave you.
LOL maybe
It's time to bring business to another company. Cgc is getting shady in every aspect.
Dont pay for for them to personally press your books? Seems the grade is affected.
Etc.
Man, some employees at cgc have it out for you.
Cgc is just not consistent that’s why they drive everyone crazy. It’s luck of the draw who grades
