Glad you got the part at 28:09 of the waves busting the gate open Why drive to either coastline when a couple hours drive up north you get to see stuff like this. Superior's fury at it's best
Years ago there was a keeper in that light house they built that very well to take that kind of wave pounding ! That had to be a bit unnerving to be in that building during a storm like that .
Gichi Gami - Never gives up her dead! Gordon Lightfoot if i remember correctly wrote and sang the song about the Edmond Fitzgerald. Also a great song "Sundown" plus others.
@@sweynforkbeardtraindude Oops. I forgot there are 4 more lakes. Does Michigan kick up this bad? I had friends living in the UP. I wish I'd have paid them a visit. I know it's beautiful. My family for 3 generations have lived in Superior and Duluth, so I'm kinda partial!💖💖💖
@@susanpugh130 Michigan can get crazy but not as much as Superior. LM is a beautiful lake from Holland north. What is crazy is how dangerous Lake Erie can be. It is so shallow that not very much wind will whip it up pretty good.
I remember going up to Duluth around this same time in 2013 and having a similar thing going on. My family and I stayed at The Inn on Lake Superior and after two days, everything was covered in a layer of ice over an inch thick along the boardwalk. It was cool.
Thanks Duluth Harbor Cam!! I watched for hours yesterday. Capturing when the gate crashed open was the high point for me. I didn't see it yesterday when watching. Seeing the waves splash higher than either lighthouse was awesome!
What country state or province is this?Never heard of the place be specific pleaseWe are not all explorers orNavigatorsNo harm in educating us thx😊The world is very big❤
Very impressive. I live about 10 miles from the Great Lake Ontario and I've seen huge waves crash to shore when we get a Canadian Nor'Easter come across the lake. Now I'm too old and scared to go face Lake Ontario during a fierce storm.
same here.....the thought of being in a nice cosy log cabin during a blizzard, or in a lighthouse during a big storm is genuinely appealing. difficult to find the latter though since practically all lighthouses these days are no go areas for everyone but maintenance crews.
I’ve always had an attraction to high waves but I also was quite cautious so I didn’t get swept away. When we went to Aruba several times the north shore and sand dunes were magnificent areas to watch the waves coming in and crashing into the island. I was always amazed that it seemed like every 5th wave was the largest one. This video is of course on the Great Lakes and I will never forget when my uncle and I went up to Lake Erie and as we pulled in I saw the warning flags were out and I was seeing 6-8foot white caps. But my uncle was in the Navy and this didn’t scare him. As we were going out of the harbor people were pointing at us and laughing. We literally spent as much time out of the water as in the water that day but yet here I am to write about it.
I shipped out on the Paul Tiejen which was a Steinbrenner owned boat on about April 20 in 1977. The made it up to Duluth before the end of April and at that time there was still ice two feet thick in harbor and along the coast. A tug had to come in to get us through although there were paths through the ice from previous ships. Point being that the lack of ice there now is a direct consequence of global heating!! And at the rate we are going there will be no ice in the Arctic during the summer either. When we lose the Arctic the natural mechanism to moderate the climate will be gone and we can will see an additional warming of 0.6 C above what we are already seeing.
The winds are very strong people should stay away from the wall in canal park the waves are splashing very high the canal park was flooded between the walls with water from lake superior.... People should be safe stay away from the waves splashing very high to the canal park and harbor basin
Holy smokes, at about 9:40 the water actually blows open the safety gate. Also 16:20 the view changes. All the water you see in the foreground is actually in the shipping canal. This may be the most violent water I’ve seen in this area.
Amazing video! After a storm this violent, does the CG go out into the harbor and check the depth of the water and make sure none of the huge ships will be grounded?
No lake is way deep. Can drop 300ft ten ft off shore in places. So foggy can’t always see , There is a sand bar that poeple walk out on shoulder deep water way off shore. Safe but scary
Mud and sand getting kicked up from the lake bottom by the waves, plus it’s currently flooding in almost all the rivers leading into the lake, and the pine trees are waking up, lots of sap dripping into the water as they prepare for summer. The pines give all the rivers leading into the lake a natural brown coloration. Only reason the lake is clear is because of all the clams and mussels in it, cleaning it. Slight bit of pollution from the port but not enough to turn the lake brown at all
Thank you @Duluth Harbor Cam! I loved watching it live and am glad that I can view this any time. I was really pleased to see that you recorded this.
The raw power of Gitche Gumee… glorious

WOW!! Busting open the gate at 9:41.
Hey there from Lake Huron ! Our jetty and lighthouse got a pounding too! Not much beach left 😢🆘🫡🇨🇦

Thank you, beautiful scene when watching from inside. Hopefully, all boats on the lake found shelter.
Most did, except Indiana Harbor. Crazy people sailed straight through it 😬
I hope they recorded it
Another Thanks DHC from me. Wish I could go back & review other cams from then. Thank you so much.
Beautiful! The power and majesty of the Great Lakes
Your comment describes the absolute power of our dear Mother Superior!❤
@@susanpugh130 Ha! While I love Superior, it ranks second in my heart. Second only to Lake Michigan.

Very beautiful thing mother nature is. 🤗🤠🙏
God, is in charge of me -mother nature
Holy buckets...there's even big waves in the walk way.
When I see Superior like this, I have to literally remind myself that I’m not looking at a turbulent ocean.
The old girl’s kicking up her heels.
Spectacular footage, Thank you for sharing.
Looks like the lake i live besides in a winterstorm! Vättern in Sweden! Majestic 🙏
Thanks Duluth💙
I have to move to Duluth.
Bring your down parka.
Thank you for sharing the video clip
wow. it's something seeing a lake this size and the weather around it.
I was watching the Canal Cam, and so I missed the most dramatic video from the Lighthouse Cam. What a contrast with the day after.

@@JoniMitchell-qi6hr This is Lake Superior in the Duluth Minnesota harbor.
I know it's a (very big) lake but in conditions like those it reminds me so much of the North Sea off Scotland.
Breathtaking
Wow - just wow…
That's some very serious waves. And es I've been to Duluth many times.
Wow! Breathtaking waves!
Yeah now I saw gate get flung opened by waves...WOW..that's some power.

Awesome video!
A very nice video
Looks so cold 🥶
Holy shite! Those r some big freakin' waves! Don't mess with Mother Nature unless you know what you're doing!❤
Imagine hundreds of people lining the ship canal walk as they watch huge bulk carriers sailing in and out of the ship canal, not today though.
The guy standing in the lower right-hand corner of the frame got a ringside seat when the gates were forced open by the waves.
Remember seeing those waves driving to Thunder Bay

Some of the wildest storm footage of the Duluth Canal I have ever seen.
Wow 😮
Woo so neat,😗
I believe this is the most violent wave action I have seen for the Duluth harbor cams.

For real! I couldn’t be that lighthouse worker
Holy moly
Is there anyone in either of the lighthouses??

Are the lighthouses, manned. I thought I saw someone in the big square one. Wow those waves were gigantic.
How did they get the green gates shut again, without someone going out to sea?

How is there any land left anywhere?
What makes that water look so dirty or rusty the minerals in the water or?
Sand gets stirred up off the bottom near the shoreline.
I saw someone ask a similar question and she was told it’s taconite. I guess spillage from the loading and unloading
