      John, as always, thanks for being such a big supporter. Nate will turn 16 at the end of October and he's starting to take an interest in cars and is pointing out things he likes and such. He seems to attract the ladies so maybe I should introduce him in the videos and start brining in a different demographic!

      Yep Scotty will tell ya what bottle of shit from Auto Zone will fix that engine knock... Most of the 5.3 engines that knock it's a rod knock. Some just let go of the front main bearings just mentioning one of the many I cured it's usually one the front rods or in particular #5cyl can be a pain in the ass and let go for whatever reasons or it is the new gen 5.3 GM cam shafts can strip a lobe and knock like a rod. Most of the time you only get slight sneeze out of the intake because of the fuel injection. Had a few here thinking main bearing or rods. It was the cam sounding like that. In any case you are looking at about $1,000 in parts and $1,500 to yank it and fix the fuck up. Budget 3K easy and the decent 5.3 gaskets are expensive even on line. Do not buy thee cheapo gaskets on Ebay U will be sorry and buying the right gaskets anyhow. You cannot fix the cam by throwing a new one in and not putting new cam bearings in while it's in the truck. You are only screwing yourself if ya don't yank it and put the new cam bearings in it. The 5.3 and 6.0 cams are a night mare if you don't put the new bearings in em... You would get about 3,500 to 5,000 miles and whole engine will self destruct on ya..

      @Purple Gun I've revved up more engines than Scotty has ever seen in his days and I pulled off 5 Northeast Modified Stockcar Championships before I was 35 years old... I have forgotten more about motors than most blow holes will ever know about an engine... I know Silverado trucks better than the Tonawanda engine plant does and the Indiana Texas and Canadian factories that assemble these loads of manure... It takes a real rocket scientist to figure em all out it really does... GM has done a lot more to hurt itself than they realize... Scotty has nothing to do with that at all he's an older salesman believes in what he believes in. I just believe that works right... It's getting harder and harder to buy a TRUCK that does just that...

    I'm willing to bet the engine knock on that Tahoe is the AFM(active fuel management), the lifters are known to go bad, its quite a common problem on these trucks, and make a pretty terrible knocking noise. The AFM/DOD basically "deactivates" 4 of the 8 cylinders when at cruising speed where load on the engine is very light. The lifters have very small holes in them that allow oil through or not dependent on whether the engine is in V4 or V8 mode, the holes can get plugged among other issues and starve the lifter(s) of oil and thus proper lubrication. You can purchase complete kits with new lifters and the necessary accessories. I would strongly recommend not buying the kit that will replace the AFM lifters, but instead getting the kit that deletes the AFM, essentially just normal lifters. It prevents the problem from ever reoccurring in the future. Not to mention that replacing the lifters are a much cheaper option then replacing the motor. I currently own a Tahoe(SSV) I purchased from an auction, albeit a couple years newer(2012) but still with the same body style and engine. Luckily mine has not developed the issue (yet) and I will probably delete the AFM in the near future, though I might be able to get away with deactivating it through the computer since I have yet to have any issues.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  6 років тому

      Great comment and thanks so much for sharing all of that info on the AFM and DOD on these Chevy Tahoe's. I've been reading more about this stuff today and it seems like it's almost to be expected. I've even read where some folks consider cam and lifters 'routine maintenance'. Really weird too that it costs so much too. I appreciate your sharing and your thoughts on deleting the AFM too. Thanks agin! -Chris

    If you do public auctions you could just put a little work into them and resale for notes as a Private online seller. No license needed up to three just keep it going. Online there are engine rebuild sites. They will send you an engine. The rebuild comes in core goes out back.. that's how it works. With your son as a partner you can sell only a certain amount publicly until you expand if you want a license. You need to create a spreadsheet list with the times for auction. Include the repair fee if you invest. Get a code reader..

    The Vics and Town Cars had a plastic intake manifold which often cracks around the mounting bolts. That causes vacuum issues with rough and low idle. I'd check that first on the Vic. The good news is that there are now so many at the wreckers that they are really cheap to fix if you can work a socket set.

    When it comes to LS motors and Silverado trucks parts and custom parts and paints I am the guy people come to here from miles away... Yes any 5.3 will work. Manifolds may have to be changed they might not even be the ones the cop car came with because from 1999 new body style till about 2010 the manifolds had a tendency to crack when the engine was left at idle in really hot or extreme cold weather so there are only 2 variants thank cripes on that one. When a truck had a 5.3 in it unless U want headaches or really know U'r poop put what came in it back in it. 6.0 used 3 diff torque converters especially the 2WD drives... They had 3 diff transmissions one with the overdrive that had a principal computer programed with a speed limiter and the cheapo A-03 torque in em and they had the regular with the 4l60e 4spd that had no speed limiter and the program for such is not in it because they primarily used that trans in the Police Govern. Vehicles. Then ya have that odd ball (E)4L60E which is often (referred to) as the Electronic 4L69E but it is just a (E)4L60e. They used those in the Z71 trucks mostly the 4 wheel drives but occasionally one of em shows up in the 4 wheel drive Tahoes Yukons. Nightmares to get parts and the right solenoids 4 em... I know been a victim of that trans several times over in fact. Those trucks had that larger HD Torque converter and it can either be speed governed thru the cumpooter or thru the thing that controls the Solenoids. The Z71's are the biggest pain in the ass GM ever created. That is where the last 8 digits of the vin come in handy and probably the reason people hung up on ya on the phone is that vin can really throw the average salvage dealer a zinger because they hate telling people after $1500 engine purchase and $1500 in installation you need to take it to a dealer to have that blasted cumpooter re-flashed to the tune of $500 to $1,000 depending on where ya live at. GM has it's pros and cons. The bad news is the later on ya get from about 06 to current GM is getting as bad as Ford with missed or misleading parts listings or no listings on some of their models... GM is almost forcing people to buy new stuff because GM is not generally sharing their new and late model year info with the aftermarket folks. Presumably to thwart China from copying their parts they still hold patents on for like 10 years... Then after that some of the stuff becomes easier to find.

    I think you overspent. I live in Los Angeles and due Chryslers have to run California Emission Systems the nylon components and a lot of gaskets in their engines get cooked and need to be replaced every 80K miles. You can't give away those cars here. As far as the 5.3 in the Tahoe, due it's a police you won't find a decent police replacement motor unless you buy new. Anything used is going to be junk. If you have any mechanical skills, you could probably rebuild the motor yourself in about 2 weeks for under $2K using very high quality components and blueprinting the motor. Then, I would consider keeping it. Otherwise if you have that motor rebuilt including all labor consider spending $5K. And by that time the 4L60 Trans in these things (they may have used the 4L65-E in the Police), either aren't strong trannys and if you keep it, you'll need to figure on doing that also (about $3K). Unless caught early, a 4L60 styleTrans cooks everything inside it and frequently destroys the case, so your only option is a completely new or remanufactured without a core. By the way, most cars hit the end of their economic lives at about 140,000 miles and considering the abuse Law Enforcement Agencies give these things and the fact we haven't factored in Suspension or Rear Axle issues, I would have stayed away from both vehicles.

    That 2.7 in the avenger is a horrible motor,get rid of it ASAP!
    That engine came on a lot of Dodge and Chrysler cars,it’s a real POS!
    I’m also surprised by the prices... I live on the east coast in New York to be exact and that avenger with that mileage and condition costs like $1-2k at most privately,just look on Craigslist. You come with cash and the seller usually will give it to you even cheaper. $1000 will get you one easily around here.

      Early 2000s Mopar just has no resale in general. The 2.7 is not that bad of an engine after 2004 when they fixed the oil sludge. I own a 05 Sebring convertible with it and all that really is bad with that engine is that everything major to replace is overly complicated and basically require the whole engine taken apart.

      And for back-up , download their App.
      Go to new & used dealers , insurance companies , rental car agencies , wholesale auctions , salvage yards etc.
      Used car trade-ins are sometimes booked-in for as low as

      Too a few thousand at best for something in immaculate
