Gary Wright was a member of Spooky Tooth, and they had some kickass songs. I think you should definitely consider reacting to them. I would recommend the back-to-back duo of I'm Alive / The Mirror. They should definitely be played together. Fantastic stuff!
The keyboards that are being strapped on are from Minimoogs. Gary had two behind him. He was able to switch between the two with the keyboard around his neck. The other keyboardist is Steve Porcaro. Steve Porcaro was the keyboardist for Toto and played on such tracks as Rosana and Africa. Steve also worked with Seals and Croft and Boz Scags. Steve also worked with Michael Jackson . Check out Gary Wright's song Really Want To Know You
You can also see they aren't doing any complicated finger work to play those boards. Each minimoog has only one oscillator, so they can only play one note at a time, no harmony. State of art in the mid 1970's though, and a band that could afford more than one could get a richer sound that way.
You guys beat me to it. Steve Porcaro is and continues to be a force in the rock world with his synth skills. I saw him live and up front with Toto in 2017 at a small club. He came out of touring retirement and was phenomenal as were the rest of the guys. I feel blessed to have seen him, Paich, Luke, Lenny and Joe Williams from about 10 feet away near the end of their reign with Toto. Joe fist bumped me twice from the stage - I was that close. Some of the best musicians/session guys from our time.
@@localroger A Minimoog actually has 3 oscillators, but it is monophonic, aka single voice, so yes...one note at a time. The three oscillators can be tuned individually, so each one slightly out of tune can make the sound very fat or a more aggressive tuning of them can make the Minimoog sound like more than one note at a time, i.e. a fifth.
@@toolman8269 OK thanks for the clarification, that totally makes sense since the whole point of the Moog is to synthesize a synthetic instrument with not just the frequency of the note you're playing but its harmonic structure and the ADSR profile. I just once read a funny story about miniMoogs not being able to play more than one note at a time and this baffling a musician who had paid a good chunk of change for one, and he ended up giving it to another musician who understood what it was for.
Herb Alpert was crazy in love with Karen Carpenter but they never married. I often wondered if her eating disorder was what held her back. Her eating disorder did not come to light until yrs later...when she died from it.😟
I saw Gary wright in 1976 at the Oakland coliseum. It was UFO, the status quo, then Gary wright..after that was Fleetwood Mac followed by Peter Frampton doing his comes alive recording. Those were called day on the green concerts and they usually started at 11:00 a.m. and ended close to 11:00 pm!!!
This song is so beautiful. Wish I had a $1 for every time I sang this in the car. I only listen to stations that have songs like this in their rotation. I remember getting out of bed when I was 6 years old after everyone had gone asleep, to watch Midnight Special, because I knew Bob Welch was going to be on singing Ebony Eyes. Music was fascinating to me back then.
I played this song endlessly when it was en vogue - still is IMO. That’s an about 20-year-old Steve Porcaro of the Toto Porcaros in the red jumpsuit playing bass synth. The drumming is the undisputed backbone of this fine song, along with Gary’s perfect vocals. I don’t know if that’s Andy Newmark on drums, but that guy nailed it live.
Oh I love this song!!!! Always have, along with “Dream Weaver!” I know why you wanted to see it live, I feel the studio is better for just listening- ❤️💙✌️
When he played that tour opening for Peter Frampton I remember thinking, Peter is going to have to put on a heck of a show to beat that, and he did. That's when Frampton Comes Alive came out.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this AWESOME LIVE VIDEO of Gary Wright on "The Midnight Special." LOVE those backup singers, especially that rockin' lady cowbell player!!!! 😁 Although an American (from New Jersey), Gary Wright started with the early British Hard Rock band Spooky Tooth in 1967. They scored it big in 1969 with their 2nd album, appropriately titled *Spooky Two,* which was an all-killer-no-filler album and one of the greatest Rock albums ever recorded. The interesting thing about that band is that they had TWO keyboardists AND they were both the lead vocalists of the band!! (The other was Mike Harrison, R.I.P.) You should check them out!! Standout songs on that album include the killer opener "Waiting For The Wind" and "Better By You, Better Than Me." 👍🏻
If you remember right, Edgar Winter was the one who invented and used this portable keyboard for the first time. Remember the song "Frankenstein" that you reacted to a while back? ;-)
Fantastic song! His other monster hit was Dream Weaver. I think that these 2 songs were some of the first songs that were primarily made with keyboards to reach as high as Number 2 (both songs hit 2 but neither hit 1 in the US.) Thanx for this! ~Be Blessed
I got to see this guy live in 1976 at a Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum (on the baseball field). He was part of a day that started with UFO, Then Gary, Then Fleetwood Mac (first tour with Lindsay and Stevie) And last but not least, Peter Frampton on the Comes Alive tour. Not a bad show to see for a 16 yr old kid. I didn't have my license yet so my mom took my girlfriend and I to Oakland, dropped us off at 6am and came to get us at about 7pm. Those were the days.
You know those songs that "do it" for you? This is one I would HAVE TO HAVE on a deserted island....I remember waking up on my last day of high school sophomore year to this song. It is like it was yesterday. Killer bass and mad cowbell.😅
Loved your reaction! We all felt the same way when these songs came out! One of the best 70’s classic songs Alive! Yeah! Rock on! 🤘 Check out Dream Weaver by him! 🫶😊
Been busy since summer set in and just now getting a chance to catch up. Don’t know if I ever said this but coming here to your channel just takes me back in time to a much simpler time in life. Today is so hectic and we forget to take some R&R. Thank you so much for my rest and relaxing time down memory lane. ❤️❤️❤️
Wordz of Wisdom is my absolute favorite rap song. I am 58 year old white lady here in the south. Used to blast Wordz of Wisdom in my red Firebird with T Tops out in early 90s and still. blast that song in my Camaro today. Jamel needs to check that one out for sure.
Check out Gary Wright in his previous incarnation in Spooky Tooth, where he shared lead vocals with Mike Harrison, whose voice was even more powerful than Gary’s in “That Was Only Yesterday.” That band was killer. Their cover of The Beatles “I Am the Walrus” was the closing music for HBO’s “Watchmen.”
Hey Jamel - You should really check out some Tesla. A great 80’s band stuck in the “hair” era. Gettin’ Better, We’re No Good Together, Love Song (you might have done that already), Time, Song and Emotion, The Way it Is… their first 3 albums are all great listens!!
This whole album is amazing. You should listen to "Can't Find The Judge", it's pretty funky and one of my favorites. (There is an official release on YT.)
I loved this song when I was a little kid. I thought it was heavy musically. Gary Wright had another hit with :Dream Weaver". You should try The Bay City Rollers while you're revisiting the 70s.
Love the Midnight Special. Cover some of the Old Grey Whistle Test and The Top of the Pops. If you want to see some great costumes and live performances etc…
You should check out Hirie. I’ve gotten into a lot of modern day Reggae and she has popped up everywhere. Love her music. Very underrated too. “Wandering Soul” and “You Won’t Be Alone” are a must by her.
GREAT ONE!!!!!! Jamel, as others have requested here; please react to "RISE" by Herb Alpert. A true Jazz fusion classic! We actually did that song in band in Jr. High School; I was on violin. Loved it!!!
Before Gary Wright's solo career he was in a great band Spooky Tooth. check out Evil Woman from Spooky Tooth Two. Their bass player was Greg Ridley who went on to play with Humble Pie who also had Peter Frampton.

I am so glad to see someone react to Gary Wright song not named Dream Weaver lmao
I think too many people think he only did Dream Weaver and had no other songs this song however was also a hit.
I've always loved this song! Gary Wright came and went like a flash, but he was good!!
Gary Wright came out of a band named Spooky Tooth. Check them out. They had some great stuff.

Rise, by Herb Alpert. A fantastic instrumental.
Yessssss!
One of the best!
PLEASE!!!
His early stuff with the Tijuana Brass is good, too😊
Herb Alpert was crazy in love with Karen Carpenter but they never married. I often wondered if her eating disorder was what held her back. Her eating disorder did not come to light until yrs later...when she died from it.😟
Yo, bro! You need to listen to "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright! That is some cosmic trip out music for sure!
I did 👍🏾ua-cam.com/video/2OmZtLEUgeI/v-deo.html

Yes..LSD album if there ever was one....

Never heard this live performance, DAMN ❤❤❤
I loved this song! I had heard that this song was completely done on synthesizers. Casey Kasem told me on American Top Forty. Ha ha!
He recorded this without a guitar in his band.... The song still made it.... Rare...
True! In fact, the whole album is without guitars or bass except for one track ("Power Of Love") which Ronnie Montrose appears on.
This song is so beautiful. Wish I had a $1 for every time I sang this in the car. I only listen to stations that have songs like this in their rotation. Someone at some time, said, ‘Hey! Let’s free up the keyboard! Strap it around your neck!” And the rest, sadly is history. Love, love love this song!

Yessssssssssssss I played this song everyday with my boom box playing the cassette 💘😃
One of my favorite Gary Wright songs, thanks for playing!!!!
Oh I love this song!!!! Always have, along with “Dream Weaver!” I know why you wanted to see it live, I feel the studio is better for just listening- ❤️💙✌️
Funky all the way. He had a couple of hits that were memorable!
Abso freaking lutely beautiful! I had never heard this particular performance. Stunning! The studio is one of my top 20 songs of all time.
They're wearing pajamas, not karate outfits - remember - they had them on for Dreamweaver too.
When he played that tour opening for Peter Frampton I remember thinking, Peter is going to have to put on a heck of a show to beat that, and he did. That's when Frampton Comes Alive came out.
“I wouldn’t Want To Be Like You” by Alan Parsons Project. A groove that don’t quit, and a killer guitar solo!
probably one of the coolest songs!
@@jasonthompson4136 Yeah man, it’s a classic!
Love this song. This was out when I was a kid and my taste in music was just forming.
Haven't Heard This in a while! Super Awesome live performance! Wish we still had shows like this...
Oh this is a great memory. Takes me back to high school days.
In 1974 and 1975 I must have seen Gary Wright about 12 times as he was one of the opening acts for practically every concert I attended.
Gary pass last September, he will be missed. I was raised on his songs.. Great Singer.
I remember this tune from my high school days. Loved this tune! PEACE!!!!!

Awweee yesssss Love is Alive!! Bring it!! I'm singing the whole way through!!! 🤗
I've loved this song since the first time I heard it back in the day. I don't know what it is, but it never gets old to me.
🎸THIS SONGS GREAT🎸🎶COWBELL🎶🎶
If you remember right, Edgar Winter was the one who invented and used this portable keyboard for the first time. Remember the song "Frankenstein" that you reacted to a while back? ;-)
I was able to see him do a free show in a park in Gas City Indiana, a small town near my home. He was great!
I Saw him in a Park Venue also... Suited the playlist very well...!...
Oh man! That opening cowbell never failed to fill the dance floor - and I was first in line!
One of my all-time favs!❤️❤️🎧🎧😎
The roller rink and Paris Bar (Paris, MI). Memories.
Gary's second big hit after Dreamweaver. Love it Alive reached #2 .🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
I saw Gary Wright perform this live when he toured as a member of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band, along with "Dream Weaver".
And his voice is still powerful and he sings his songs in the original keys at over 70 yrs old!
Me too
This is one of my mom's favorite songs. I know it's Father's day but here's to my mom. Thank you for turning me on to great classic rock in 1970.
Great tune... Thanks... Even tho this is the first time I heard this version it still brings me back to the summer when this was on the radio.
This song is so different from his other hit “Dream Weaver”. He changes genres on this one, man.
This studio album is actually awesome .. highly recommend ... this is the opening track

Midnight Special is famous for true live performances... not fake like American Bandstand lip synching.
Love your channel, Man!
For the record, Midnight Special did lip sync sometimes. Sometimes they had live vocals with a taped backing track.
TBF both Soul Train and American Bandstand had lip synching but that didn't change the fact that it was amazing music

He had another hit in 1981 called Really Wanna Know You. I believe he was in a band in the late 60s called Spooky Tooth.
Glad you are reacting to the Midnight Special performance. Loved this song and Dream Weaver as a child.
A lot of synthesizers used in the 70s. Used by Steve Miller (Fly Like An Eagle) and Elton John (Love-like Feeling).
It is indeed a great one. Thanks for sharing.
Man I'm glad to have been alive to enjoy this music when it came out back in the day, and still to this day.
Never seen anyone so happy to see cowbell!😊❤️
