my 22 inch Southwest disk showed up yesterday. i got one with legs so i can use it over a campfire. it also fits perfectly in my 28 inch fire pit. so if i want to cook over a fire in a place i cant make a ground fire i can do that. it also works great on the propane burner for my deep fryer. the Southwest Disk is worth every penny and then some! i was so excited when it got here yesterday. i already had a bunch of meals planned for cooking on the disk. i made some awesome Chicken street tacos last night for dinner.
Thank you so much for the review! I haven't seen anyone compare these two side by side an1 for me, as a car camper, the Discada is going to be the way to go. Very detailed and informative!!
Great review. The pro 30 does have some adjustability in its legs as does all of the camp chef stoves. You can level them out easily with pulling the legs a little and tightening down the set screw. They also offer leg levelling kits you can replace the feet of the stove with screw based feet. They all work great.
Hi, how did you get on building your own? Any details you can share as I think I'll go the same route as you, thanks to original poster for a really good informed video
@@Woodlandbill Hello. I actually scraped the idea of using a skottle as I travel (off road overlanding) alone, with my dog, and realized that I wouldn't use it very often. However, I researched how to assemble one and found an assembly that I would use if I were to put one together. Search for "Dirt and Fire" UA-cam channel and he has an excellent and inexpensive solution. The title of his vid is "Easy DIY Skottle". I actually already have the burner that he shows in the vid, so the additional parts would be very easy to purchase.
A good trick is to use a Flame King 1 lb refillable propane cylinder to power the skottle. It’s a little pricey at the start, but you’ll save if you go through lots of the disposable 1 lb bottles. I can fill a 20 lb cylinder at Costco for $12 and perpetually refill my little bottle from there. No hoses to trip over and knock your skottle over so it’s safer too. I think i paid $95 for a refillable cylinder and the refill kit, the second bottle was another $50, but that was a waste of money. Since you can refill a partially full bottle, you can always start with it full. The same bottle later gets used to run the lantern.
Thanks for the note. We have used the Flame King refillable 1 lb bottles, and their refill kit. Works great. We like it so much we made a video about it. 🤗
Awesome!... on getting the 18" Madrid. They are so slick and so fun to cook on. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we are enjoying ours. [ For those interested in purchasing from Southwest Disk, here's what we've seen on SouthwestDisk.com in the past month... The inventory of Discadas seems to fluctuate often. When we ordered ours, most discs were in stock. As we were uploading our Discada review video (I think on a Sunday), most of their discs were out of stock. Today is the first time the 18" Madrid has been in stock when we have looked at their website. The folks at Southwest Disk are very responsive to email. Not in our experience. The weight of the Discada, along with the multiple contact point where it presses against the burner, it doesn't jostle or move about.
Hey could you comment on the pack ability and burner choice? the Tembo tusk has the best packable design, but are the others much bulkier? The other thing is I worry about the 10k btu burner not being enough, or the 65k burning being too much. And the added headache of having to carry a 5-20lb propane tank too. All for car camping, I love to cook and want a good hot seat on my steaks
Hi Fred. Thank you for watching and for the questions. After giving your question a good bit of thought, here are some talking points that will hopefully apply to your questions and concerns. PACKABILITY AND BULKINESS If your primary concern is size and weight, go with the Skottle. LOVE OF COOKING If your primary focus is love of cooking, go with a Discada disk. It has a much slicker surface and is a dream on which to cook. They have a variety of sizes: 18, 20, 22 and 24-inches. BURNER SELECTION *Skottle: The Skottle is designed to have the 10K BTU burner mounted directly under and against its cooking disk. It does an acceptable job of providing a good amount of heat. *Southwest Disk: I agree that a 65K BTU burner is a little on the heavy side on the top end. However, you can control the amount of flame/heat using the regulator. DECISIONS, DECISIONS Because you love to cook, while still minimizing bulk, for your consideration I suggest an 18-inch Discada disc and the portable, height-adjustable burner, both by Southwest Disc.
Fred... Our observation is that the product stock at Southwest Disk is quite active and availability changes from day to day. We have also experienced that they are very responsive to email inquiries. When there was an item we wanted that wasn't in stock at the moment, we let them know by email and they replied letting us know when that item would be back in stock - and it was.
Thanks so much! Your response echos each of the thoughts I was having. I really like something about each of them. Love the simplicity of the Scottle, the burner can use propane or butane, and the bags but don’t like the burner size and price. Love the handles, surface, and burner of the southwest disk, but don’t love that there isn’t a simple bag solution and that I have to carry a larger propane tank, and is bulkier. And I love the table and btu rating of the camp chef stove but don’t like the weight and size. Decisions for sure. Might have to let this one sit for a few weeks. I think I just will bite the bullet on the scottle but will always wish for more btu’s to get it really screaming hot for true wok type cooking One other quick thing. On the scottle, you can see the rings on the cooking surface from the leg post welds, can you feel that on top too?
Great video. With the Camp Chef Pro, do you have enough support and proper distance between the burner and the Southwest Disk? Is the disc stable and does it have enough gap to avoid burning? Thank you!
Thank you. A definite yes to all your questions. The burner sits well below the pan support for a nice cooking distance. It is very stable with the 22" cooking disc from Southwest Disk. There is nice flame control with the Camp Chef Pro 30 also.

Regarding the link... Love cast iron! Nice size and will last forever.
That 3 build-in leg rings just look weird, I prefer the other
It's a wok!
The discarda looks better built then the sottle
Yes, we agree.
I made my own SW cooking pan. But I’m from New Mexico so…
Cool... 😎
Wow! 👍🏾
Yay!
Why don’t these cost $99?
Yes. It's amazing how reasonablly priced the cooking discs by Southwest Disk are. The Tembo Tusk Skottles have always been on the more expensive side.
Amazing video. Like and support. New friend here. I hope you will connect.

These style cooking pans are what poor people use in 3rd world Countries like where I’m from.
They work great and last.
If a poor person in Bolivia can’t afford one they’re too expensive.
Historically, and still today, lots of folks use old steel plow discs to make into cooking pans. They aren't all commercially made.
That there is pretty much an over priced wok. Prove me wrong.
Why are you watching the video then?
David, your comment got me to thinking... What really is the difference between a wok and plow disc pan? So, we made a video comparing the two: ua-cam.com/video/TKUbe_FX9MY/v-deo.html
In the process I came to appreciate the versatility of a wok even more than before, and learned some stuff along the way. Thank you for your comment and point of view.
That’s not new I made my first one 35 years ago
