- Finally back on the water after a very windy spring. Doing the usual searching for Halibut and I get lucky and come across two great fish. One JUMBO and another real nice one. This was a very tough day and everyone was on the water. Eight kayak friends and just as many boats and somehow I was the only one to catch any fish #blessed
that's a lot of rods while trying to fight a big halibut, dude i was like you just threw your cellphone in the pocket and started to lean thinking crap phone might fall out. sick fishing man, congrats on the big halibuts.
Thanks!!!!
@@Mr.Markus. have any professional photographers ever reached out to you?
@@princeofcats7822 No they haven’t. Why do you ask?
@@Mr.Markus. just seems like it should often be opportunities for good photography.
I'm loving your videos bro, such relaxing stuff keep it up
Wow! Great catch there! Aren't you cold though?
Thanks!! It just looks like its cold out. It was actually around 70 degrees out there.
Nice catch!! Love your vidz, always entertaining. Let fish together some time. You fishing out the Santa Cruz Bay Area?
Nah man I'm like 4 hours south of the bay area. I fish in Santa Barbara County most of the time. But I really wanna get up to the bay area this year to chase some salmon in the salt. I've only ever caught them in rivers.
Dope Video!
Hell yeah! Thanks!!!
Will you show us your go to halibut rig or set up?
For live bait I use what’s called a trap rig with 2 trebles. Just search “trap rig for halibut” and you can see it.
@@Mr.Markus. Thanks you for the reply back
That's a dream fish dude.
I'm new to ocean fishing for halibut. I'm a bay fisherman (NYC and SF area) but I'm moving to Venice, CA and I'm going to be kayak fishing 3-4 times a week.
I saw in a another comment you mentioned 40-80 ft of water, but the ocean is big. What do you look for when deciding to fish an area? Ledges? Depth changes? Bait? etc.
Yeah definitely a big ocean. Haha. So covering as much ground as possible is always a good idea. I drift with the current on days when its pushing nicely. But if it isn't pushing much, you should get moving and create your own motion. Bait is very important. And you don't have to be directly on top of a bait school or anything but as long as theres a few schools in the area you should be good. I don't really have ledges where I fish but quick depth changes are good to look for. On an incoming tide fish the top side of the change. On an outgoing fish the bottom side. But its a lot of searching. Halibut fishing is a serious grind. Some people love it and some people hate it, but I find a much greater sense of accomplishment when you succeed at something that you have to work that hard for. Good luck out there.
That’s good stuff right there brothers. No matter what ever it is you have to work at it to succeed.Enjoy your videos.
I can’t find you on FB or I would like to share something with you that you might find interesting. Think I live within a few miles of you. And would like to talk to you about some aspects of your talent. Much respect Mark Silva NY Yankees 1984 85. SM born and raised. Hope to hear from you bro.
@@marksilva6726 shit man I dunno why I just saw this for the first time right now. Hahaha. I don’t have a Facebook. I have an Instagram @mr_markus if you’re still interested. And I live in Orcutt so yeah, probably just a few miles away.
Whenever you catch big Halibut I feel happy as well as if I'm the one who had got it.

Nice fish! I've been looking for a hand held radio. What radio is that you use?
I forget what model it is but its made by standard horizon
A lot of the time big hali won’t run till u get them to the surface
Great video! What a huge halibut! How big did it end up measuring or weighing?
Thanks man! She measured 42 inches 30 pounds.
Just lost my first yak flaty yesterday was literally as big as ur first on fought it for 15 min wrapped around one of my other lines got it to the surface saw the yak b lines to the bottom and bit me off
Dang! Thats a heartbreaker. Theres usually not too many of them around in the winter but if you do find em they're usually big. All part of the game. Sometimes they just outplay us. #respect
@@Mr.Markus. was Gona ask what’s ur go to line for halibut iv been useing 20 pound fluro but I think I’m Gona up it to 30 pound mono what’s ur thoughts ?
@@BigBaitsBigFish I use 40b fluoro leaders on 50 lb braided mainline. I really don't think these fish are line shy. I know guys that bounce ball with 80 and 100lb fluoro and they catch a ton of fish.
@@Mr.Markus. thank u man definitely Gona step up on lbs 🤙🤘
Could you get struck by lightning?
as soon as that white belly comes from the depths, it's heart pounding! Biggin
10 minutes after that big one, every kayak and most of the boats on the water came over and squatted on my spot!!! #feelinthelove
Bruh you could kill them it would be less a pain and long suffering for them.... Nice catch still
Great video! Thanks for reminding me it’s going to be a grind... 7 hours is a lot of work! Your videos are getting me through until halibut season starts back up. When would it say the halibut fire back up for you?
I’ll pretty much fish year round for them but generally things don’t start heating up til March or April.
@@Mr.Markus. okay, thanks for the reply. Love watching your channel; keep it up.
@@andrewhooper355 Thanks Andrew! I got some big trips coming up this year to San Clemente Island and Cedros Island in Mexico, so should have some cool videos coming.
Nice catch bro good job ..where about were you fishing ? What kind of radio do you have ?
Thank you! This is on the Central Coast of California. And the radio is a standard horizon I got on amazon. Not too sure what model it is.
Thank you for not saying where this is! I don't think you should have put the clips in with the identifiable stuff either, but at least no one has come on here blowing the name up. It really is becoming a problem with the massive pressure social media puts on spots.
Nice slab of a fish!
Thanks man! Yeah I never have and I never will say where this is and I usually try to film facing the open ocean and edit it to hide the coast as much as possible but its a very recognizable spot so I can only do so much. If ya know where it is, ya know where it is. Ha. Not like its some secret spot or anything. Everybody in the area knows the spot and knows you can find some good fish sometimes if you're willing to grind and grind and grind. They definitely make you work for them out there.
@@Mr.Markus. Absolutely. I've dove and fished that spot many times. Someone will surely come in an blurt it out like they're going to get an attaboy. I just fear the massive facebook driven fishing groups that hold events will blow it up, as they do others. I guess it's not much different than when the fleet is in a spot because word got out there is a WSB bite. But What else am I going to blame, if I can't blame social media? hahahaha.
Nice. Hoping for my first hali this year. 😅🤞🏼
Get em!!!
TIL my Reliable bag perfectly fits ~35lb halibut. so sick 🔥
If you ever come down to the central coast, hit me up Ish. Maybe we can fill that bag for ya!
@@Mr.Markus. dude id be honored! hit me up one day and we'll make it happen ishwithfish@gmail.com or ig @ishwithfish
I am watching this just grinning. CANNOT WAIT to get back out on the halibut bite!!! Awesome video man.
Thanks brah! I think I might go cruise around on Sunday. See if there’s any life around yet.
Fishing is the only animal cruelty you can film lol baseball throws a fish.. that was pretty funny
Hahaha, love how amped you are 🤙🏼
40+inch halibut will forever get me that amped!!
Pacific halibut gone south
You put that on the stern and spank it like a thoroughbred and you won't need to paddle. Nice catch!
hahahaha. Ive had them spin me in circles when they freak out next to the kayak. Powerful fish for sure
Where do you lunch at? I live in Ventura and I’ve been going to SB harbor.
Sorry dude but I'm never gonna say where this is. It is in Santa Barbara County but there's tons of other good spots all over the county that hold big fish. You need to get out of that harbor and start fishing deeper. The harbor is almost like a sanctuary for small fish where they can grow up in a little more protected environment. You can even go out of the harbor and head north and pound the sand in 40-80 feet of water right there. Ive seen plenty of good ones caught right there out front. Most areas where you can find a nice sandy bottom in 40-80 feet of water, as well as bait schools moving around the area, you're gonna find halibut in the spring, summer, and fall. Santa Barbara county is one of the best locations on the planet to catch halibut. Just get out there and start hunting! Good luck man!!!
The island I come from, we throw away those kinda fish. Is a good tasting fish? I'm in Hawaii right now but when I'm craving for reef fish, I just go down the road and fish off the cliff to catch one or two for dinner.
typical human that seems like they don't have a care in the world for other living animals. bad vibes form the channel.
My ten year old son said "what the flock" and I almost had a heart attack. I was telling him to do something and he said the same thing you said. Never thought I'd hear that saying again. Anyhow, looks like you're having fun out there.
You are killing me man holy shit I wish I were young again I’d be out there with you….
Good to see you back, missed you in the off season
Mr.Markus.......Best catcher man I know!!❤️❤️
Thanks Bro!!! Or is this a nephew? Landon? Logan? Is that you???
Awesome fish! I also really appreciate the ABS rod rack.I liked it so much, I stole your design and built one. I would like to know what you did to reduce the ABS to fit the kayak sleeve?
Thank dude! The rod rack is actually just 2" PVC that I painted black. I had to heat it and bend it to get the correct angle to fit in the kayak rod holders. And I had to grind them a little thinner but not much at all.
@@Mr.Markus. Ok, I gotcha. Ive got one I made with PVC but didn't care for the design. What I like about yours is the height that allows for a kill bag aft instead of on the bow lashed down. Im gonna try and have the tubes turned on a lathe. I saw a video on here about heating the pipe with screaming hot sand so it heats the entire pipe evenly and allows you to bend it to whatever shape you need. Keep on slayin' bro!
Your should make an equipment video! Fantastic content!
Damn bro just drag a net next time haha so many rods
Nice catch. Never saw such a clear and distinct example of animal abuse and disrespect for animals. BTW I am not activist, just a normal human being.
bro stfu
Your great to watch keep it up thanks
Iridium quality huh
Jumbo for 2021. Grew up out there in the 60's and 70's. The fishing was unbelievable back then. Truly Jumbo halibut, Ling cod, red snapper, crab and sea bass. Goddamn I miss those days fishing the oil Derricks and islands
Very happy 😂😂
They. Will work
Amazing video
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Mr! Hope all is well, starting a clothing line and I would like
To send you something of a collection I’m making. “ the Trophy” collection
I see your trophy halibut catch. If so would be great for you to rep. Let me know if I can send you gear.
Set up to be a Chinese fire drill but you handled it nicely. Well done.
Haha. Thanks man. Yeah I was kinda playing with fire and got lucky that fish didn't just go crazy.
I am depress now
Awesome catch, I actually caught a halibut on my channel like a week ago
Thanks!
@@Mr.Markus. you’re welcome 🤟
Nice! What month was this?
May 9th
☝🏼Yup. May 9th. I said it at the end of the vid.
Marcussssss
Grander
We’re you fishing at ??
Central Coast of California.
Wow, how big the results are friends, what fish are friends
Looks like my local beach gaviota! It’s great for halibut and perch since the number of people decreased due to the pier breaking .
A+ gaff job, nice fish!
Thanks dude!!! I think putting the gaff through the guts is the best spot to hit em. It almost freezes them for more than enough time to get them on a fish clip.
aren't you using too many rods?
No not out on the ocean.
MF Doom!
I used him in the video before this one too. Ya know show a little respect for the homie RIP. Glad somebody noticed.
Well done sir 👍🏻
that type of weather always brings in the big boy for some reason.
What are the specs on your Phenix Black Diamond spinning rod? How do you like the rod?
Its an 8 foot 20-50. I absolutely loved fishing the rod. Great balance. Plenty of backbone but still a nice soft tip to work a jig or swimbait. I was disappointed though because the fiberglass started to splinter on the top side about 2 feet below the tip. I am pretty rough with my gear but I didn't think that should've happened simply from regular use.
Love the pro tools and gear
In front of Pendleton??
I was confused on why you were that excited about an almost tiny halibut, until I read the title again and saw California halibut lol
well, they can get well over twice that size, but yeah... not alaskan halibut. biggest CA halibut I ever saw was 90lbs, but that one had been in a tank at Scripps for 20 years.
@@thomasneal9291 90lbs!?!? Holy sheeiiitt. Are you sure it was that big? The world record for California halibut is like 67 pounds but I guess one in captivity could be getting fed all the good stuff and got all humongous. That’s crazy.
Which part of Southern California is that ?
The Pacific Ocean part. Haha. JK. I’m in Santa Barbara County.

o-o
What Rod and Spinning Reel Do You Use
8 foot phenix black diamond rod with a size 10000 shimano saragosa
I've never really been fishing or interested.... This was very thrilling to watch.
I wonder why you guys call them halibut since it's a flounder, when that's said i still enjoy the videoes:)
this species is the California Halibut, different from Pacific Halibut👍🏼
@@ishwithfish yes but it is still a flounder and not a halibut, its a relative to the fluke
I honestly don’t know why they’re always called halibut, but EVERYONE out here calls them halibut. You’re actually the first person that I’ve had call them a flounder and you are correct. A halibut is always right eye dominant while our California “halibut” can be either left or right eye dominant. Ours also have much fewer dorsal spines than a true halibut. Either way they’re really fun to catch and great to eat!!!
How would you feel if what you did to that big fish they did to humans ?
@Xavier Ross élève I wouldn’t say that the fish is less important than a human, but I would definitely say that when it comes to nature and hunting animals to eat them importance really doesn’t matter
@Xavier Ross élève like I literally just said in my comment above, both are equally important but when it comes to killing, that doesn’t matter.
If I was an alien from another planet and I was shown a human and a fish and asked to kill one I would probably kill either at random because to me they’re both the same, just animals, I wouldn’t decide on the spot that humans are more important.
@Xavier Ross élève that’s how it is for who?
Too cruel of a hobby plus I don't like fish.
Less talking, more fishing…
Sounds like one boring video if he followed your idea
You use a lage hook that not real fishing
