- Denmark, Germany's northern neighbour, declared neutrality when World War 1 broke out. But after the defeat against Germany in the 19th century, they were still worried and readied their defences. At the same time Germany's hunger for supplies created a new rich elite which were called Gulasch Barons. 30,000 Danes also fought for Germany since they lived in a territory previously belonging to Denmark.

Yeah the AI needs a buff in that game. "I could have my troops only on the fronts, shores, and borders... but I think I'll just put most of my troops in the very middle of a continent not defending anything so that I lose everywhere else. I may have lost the war, but at least a random town that is literally unreachable except if the enemy already captured most of the rest of the country."

German high command discussed smuggling canisters of Surströmming from Sweden trough Denmark. It should be fired at the Entente on the Western Front, but it was deemed to inhumane.
Also, it was deemed too risky, as the Danish would surely declare war if they discovered that Germany would even think to move such horrific weapons through thier borders

My Prussian descent approves of this.
Alot of the old defensive ring around Copenhagen is left, and alot of bunkers and dugouts are left. Its totally worth a visit. There are some WW1 reenactment groups that do some prop and shows around the old bunkers.
The main bunker of the coastal fort at Mosede (around 30 min. by train from Copenhagen), have been turned into a museum, with some of the interior refurbished and some left in its current condition, while the outer ramparts and pillboxes is open to the public. During the summer, the local reenactment group puts on a show which is usually popular with the kids.
If the guys over at The Great war is interested in adding this little piece of history to their tour of european fortresses, I'm pretty sure the people running the museum would be ecstatic to show it off.

Fun fact; due to their defeat in the Second Schelswig War, Christian IX of Denmark went behind the back of his government and contacted Bismarck, offering to have all of Denmark join the German confederation if it meant they could stay united with Schelswig and Holstein. Bismarck refused, thinking that the ethnic differences that the war was quite literally fought over would simply stay unresolved if that had happened, and because they didn't speak German.
Join as a vassal state, meaning they retain some form of independence, in how they rule their country.
I also think one of the reasons for this was his childhood home was in Slesvig.

I have been hoping you would make an episode about Denmark. My dreams have now come true. My great grandfather was one of the danes fighting in the german army. He fought on the western front. And when he got leave he had to walk home from France. Arriving home he got a telegram saying only "Zuruck sofort" (Back instantly). As he knew through rumors this meant he was going to be shipped to the eastern front he desserted to Denmark. No longer wanting to take part in a hopeless war that wasn't his. Even though I do not condone desertion I am proud of my ancestor.

Jeg har prøvet at finde ham i lægdsrullerne man kan se på nettet, men det er nogle meget ringe indscanninger, så de er tæt på ulæselige, hvilket gør det lidt som at finde en nål i en høstak. Min far er dog indehaver af det kort min oldefar brugte til at finde vej op til og over kongeågrænsen.

Thomas Dinesen, the brother of Karen Blixen (a famous Danish author), joined the Canadian forces as a volunteer and fought on the western front and earned a Victoria Cross. He also wrote a book about it, called No Man's Land. Very interesting read.
Very interesting video! My great great grandfather fought for Denmark in both of the Schleswig Holstein Wars of 1848 - 1852 and 1864.
Thanks for this, Indy. My Grandfather was Danish and went to sea as a 14 year old boy in June 1914. He didn't get home again for 7 years.

A (very) minor point; the conning tower of the U-20 is NOT on display at Thorsminde anymore: a new museum was opened in Thyborøn in (iirc) 2014. The Conning tower is on display there, along with the deck gun & periscope also from the U-20 (the museum is called "sea war museum" and focuses heavily on the war at sea, during ww1; specifically the Battle of Jutland) if you find yourself up in those parts i suggest giving it a visit; it's a pretty sobering experience. (edit: the museum opened on the 15th of september, 2015.)
1864 Denmarks war is one of the best TV series on TV ever and has some of the best battle scenes of any movie.
It was also proved by Danish historians to be highly inaccurate.

My great-grandfather was probably a goulasch baron. He was from a merchant family and was born on Bornholm and by the end of the war he owned 14 ocean-going ships and 12 buildings in Copenhagen.
He got sick after the war and his wife had to take over business. Having no formal education in business, they gradually lost everything.
My grandfather, who had been sent to boarding school in Hamburg had taken a job with a bank in Bavaria. The family had some business venture in Finland and the caretaker of that had cheated them, so my grandfather was sent to Finland in the early 20s to solve any outstanding legal issues with closing down.
He stayed in Finland, became an entrepreneur, got married and died in 1992.
His memoirs mention a Ford tractor that my great-grandfather had imported in the early 1900s, which was probably one of the first tractors in Denmark.
As a Dane, who studied history, this is absolutely how I would have done it myself (well, actually, you did a better job). Thank you.
One thing to maybe note is that the social-liberals, where a breakaway fraction from the liberals in 1905. One of the main issue for this break was supposedly that the social-liberals were pacifistic in nature. Therefore it seems to be bad German intel., to expect Denmark joining the war, as long as Zahle was in power. At least it sounds odd from the view of the broader perspectives in Danish political history.

Actually it defined Danish foreign and defence politics until the war in the Balcan region in the 90's
I completely agree, although I think that to some extend it still defines us. We still have that "small state" trauma, and as a consequence we are sort of "back benchers" in foreign affairs. Our foreign policy is one of choosing which of our bigger allies to align ourselves with, rather than one of setting a policy and then seeing who agrees. Not illogical as such, but more timid than we need be, all things considered (in my opinion).
No it most certainly did NOT. The war in 1864 with a significant political and military defeat, did that. Under the cry of "what is the use(of war)", the Radical Left (Radikale venstre), led a silly policy of pacifism that never worked. Not during WW2 and not during the cold war.

That the war of 1864 lead to this policy is precisely what we are arguing for. And btw, by what standard did the pacifist policy "not work"? Denmark came out of both world wars relatively unscathed. That you think the policy was silly, and perhaps even cowardly, is a valid opinion, but it is just an opinion. Not a fact.
I am more sympathetic to the pacifistic policy than you, because I appreciate that the politicians of the time realised that we neighbored one of the greatest world powers, that had already kicked our asses once, and we simply did not have the geography to defend ourselves against a German attack.

As a dane who knows a bit of this piece of history, I approve this video. I'm really impressed with your knowlodge of this "ridiculous small country". Oh and a bit of family history. My grandfather (born 1900, living on Jutlands West coast) actually heard some of the noise from the battle of Jutland.

So happy Denmark finally got their episode, though I wished they would've talked about the "Black day at Moulin", June 6, 1915 when the 86th Füsilier Regiment (one of the German regiments formed of men from Schleswig-Holstein) suffered 1,000 casualties in one day. Let me remind you a regiment is 2,000 - 4,000 troops.

Hey Indy, Heres a little bonus ifo about interesting history in Denmark during WWI and perhaps an idea for a special episode, allbeit a short one: A Belorussian socialist and former mentor of Leon Trotsky, by the name of Dr. Alexander Helphand or "Gelfhand" (or known simply by his author Pseudonym of "Parvus") used Copenhagen as The Linchpin, in his scheme to fund and equip the Bolschevik trade-unions in Russia, acting essentially as an agent of the German empire. Look him up. its a fascinating story, worthy of a Great War special. He acted under the guise of founding an Institute for research into the horrors of war, which justified his expenditures to Danish Authorities. Heres a link a wikipedia article about him. You can find futhers litterure in the sources. I tried write a bachelors project on his life exploits, but given their secretive nature, there wasn't enough "meat" to do that, but there is certainly enough for a fascinating special episode! OTT-OTT 1 - The government wanted to collaborate, since we wouldn't stand a chance otherwise. The strategy worked, and hostility really only began much later.

If you want to read about a danish soldiers experience in the German army during wwi then you might find a copy of "living under three flags" by Boy Jessen. It was written by my great grandfather and his experiences in the German military.

Similar to men of occupied Alsace & Lorraine having to serve in the German imperial forces. Danish Queen Alexandra helped influence her husband Bertie in driving the anti German Entente Cordial with France. The menacing expansionism of the German is often underplayed, as is the use of inhuman tactics such as the ariel bombing of civilians , civilian reprisals in occupied, and the mass use of gas , although the latter pioneered by France. The British had the last word with the blockade of Germany , leading to mass starvation , and refusing to lift the blockade even after the armistice.

You miss a large chunk of the on going upgrade of the military positions in Denmark. It kept on being improved throughout the war
Is there going to be a special on FDR? And his role (If he had one) in WW1?
You should talk about Pvt. Thomas Hurdis and situations similar to his. Hurdis was an Aussie who was wounded at Polygon wood and died five days later. His skull was taken by an American docter who treated Hurdis and other soldiers at the battle. The doctor gave the skull to a museum in Philadelphia where it has stayed, on display, for a century. On the centennial of his death, Pvt. Hurdis's skull has been repatriated to the Australian consulate and will now be brought back to his grave in France. I felt that you would find this story interesting and could convey it well to your audience as well as stir a conversation on similar stories and the treatment of bodies and graves during the war

Your pronunciation "Jytland" of the Danish peninsula is a mix of Danish "Jylland" (no T there) and English "Jutland". I would prefer, if you pronounced it in pure English, rather than mixing those two words.
