Thanks for your no nonsense reviews. When I got my puppy, UA-cam had me think he would be sickly if I didn’t feed 100 raw meat sprinkled with tears of the gods. I’ve been using the brands you rated highly and my puppy is thriving.
I fed my Akitas this exact food when they were puppies and then transitioned to the adult large breed formula at about 11 months prior to switching them to Orijen. A few things: (1) it definitely was better than Hills and Blue Buffalo, firmed up their stool a tad bit and tamed the hot spots/allergies, (2) a few of the puppy bags had moth larvae but the adult bags didn’t, and (3) their stool was often mushy with yellow/Orange mucus. When I switched to Origen their stool was firm, dark brown, and had a shape. So far so good since the switch
Orijen starts with more real meat. It has no "meals." Compare the ingredients. I know Doc Rea talks about nutrients, you would have to contact the companies to get that information.
Thanks for the video. Just a heads up I have 2 large breed dogs that got considerably taller after 9 months, a dogo argentino and a pitbull/rottweiler. Height and heads grew on both of them past a year.
Oh my goodness! Take a look at the recent reviews of the Purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach salmon formula! I sense a recall is coming very soon, or at least it should be…too many dogs getting sick due to formula change.
I watched your video on How to Perform a Body Condition Score. The comments are turned off. My two cats are about a 4, on your 1-9 scale. Most of their diet is raw ground beef or lightly boiled chicken thighs. Some wet food. They also stole some of my broccoli today. LOL Using the parts of your hand as a test is brilliant!
Also I didn’t come up with the hand thing so I can’t take credit for that. I don’t remember who thought me that years ago, but they are the brilliant one.
I have a Great Dane 11 months old. Would this be a good food for him and his breed? Also when would you switch from puppy to adult food in Great Danes?
I just got a German Shepherd mix from a shelter. She is almost 5 months old and their best guess seems to be that she will be between 30-50 pounds. Should I be feeding a basic all around puppy food rather than a large breed based on that estimate? I know GSD are already known for some joint issues and I don’t want to set her up with anything else against her from the start.
I ordered 2 different bags of Gentle Giant for my 4 dogs. They been in Pedigree since puppies. Now I decided to upgraded the quality of their food I don’t even know what that really mean. For last 30 years I’ve search dog food reviews n the unfortunate part that is no one really know what best for dog to eat. Perhaps that the reason some people decided to feed their dog home made. Funny, many years ago the industry tell to people not to feed dog of the table. My vet told me that she feed all her dogs Purina. I asked why? She replied Purina who started dog food industry 100 years ago n they’ve been in the business for awhile. I don’t mean u have to feed your dog Purina. My point is that if your dog like the food that’s good, regardless what brand u choose. The sad part that the dog doesn’t get to choose what food to eat, people do.
I had a really bad experience with Pedigree. It exacerbated the speed of my 2 dogs developing bladder stones because of the type of sodium used in it. You can see a difference in their urine when fed pedigree, it's very thick and yellow, also has a really bad odor. They're now Royal Canin special diet but my other dogs have switched over to Pro Plan 27/17.
Have you reviewed or can you review Hills Science Diet Large Breed puppy food? I finally settled on this brand for our bullmastiff puppy since they seem to be good on all their other types of dog food.
I’ve not seen any issues in my practice with clients reporting issues nor have I received any warnings on my professional information boards. If it’s random people making videos they may just be assuming causation unless thier vet actually diagnosed their pet as sick from food. I’d be interested in that information, how many sick pets have actually been diagnosed with a food related illness by thier vet.
Any update on the recent formula change on this one?? I was about to switch my GSD to this from wellness core - and now am scared! Would you be able to reassess please?!
Hello! Would Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Dry Puppy Food, Chicken and Rice Formula be a good option as well? I'm looking for kibble options for my labrador/pyreenees mix puppy.
My puppy did not do well at all on this, long story short… vet temporarily put her on grain free large breed until tests are done for food allergies. Seems sensitive to grain foods. Any recommendations as to what food to use?
Hello, i switched to this type of food from the regular Purina Pro Plan puppy ( not large breed type). My dog is 5 mos, weighing at 30lbs, adult weight ranges 55-75lbs, and is a slow grower. He's supposed to be at 45lbs on his current age, but being runt of the litter maybe made him slow. He's a picky eater, and not food driven aswell. Is this a bad switch? should i put him back on the not large breed puppy food? Or will this change help him develop more? Thank you.
My mixed breed dog pound dog (50% Great Dane) is 12 months old and 80 pounds. Not huge. But still growing. In your opinion, is large breed food appropriate? Or should he be eating giant breed?
@kennyvalentine7644 at 12 months growth plates are closed (close at 9 months) and there is no more growth vertical. They may fill out, but it is time to transition to adult. There is no defined lifestage for “giant or large breed” adult, so any food in the adult life stage in the AAFCO statement is fine.
Do you have one or could you do one for Purina One+ Large Breed Puppy… ? I was feed my Labradane 4health large breed puppy… but I switched bc it didn’t have joint supplement in it.
They do contain grains , are grains good for dogs ? why some are grain free and some are with grains? can you explain me please , I need to choose a good product for my dog. Thank you
Hi! unfortunately I can’t watch the videos on UA-cam because I don’t speak fluent English and I end up translating (google tradutor) the comments to understand what the videos want to convey. I’m Brazilian and would like an honest opinion: for kittens, what food would you recommend? Proplan for cat kitten, Hills Kitten, Royal Canin Kitten or Farmina? I have many doubts, because the vast majority of veterinarians here tell us the one that contains meat in the first ingredient! I saw that ProPlan has CHICKEN MEAT as the first ingredient. I really like Royal Canin and Hills, because of the vitamins. ProPlan appears to have lower vitamins than Hills and Royal Canin.
I think you probably will do fine with any of those brands. You should still be able to compare the nutrient charts they provide to the ones I show you here. I would not worry about meat as a first ingredient. That is a horrible oversimplification of how the ingredient list works and actually is inaccurate. Thanks for watching from Brazil!
@@AnimalDocRea Lol! I’m just teasing! All this is so different for me since nutrients was all I ever looked at! I just discovered all the companies are now manipulating canned ingredient panels too! Hard to keep up! But honestly you have been awesome and I wish I was bigger to endorse you!

Great video! It's really cool that AAFCO necessitates that brands state the nutritional adequacy statement unlike FEDIAF in which case you need to email the manufacturer and ask if the formula underwent a feeding trial. I have a question regarding cat food. I found a brand that markets one of its formulas for adults but the nutrients perfectly match the ones for seniors (and adults). Should I use it for my senior cat, or should I stick to a formula marketed for seniors specifically? The only difference would be the antioxidant levels as they are more in the senior formula while protein, calcium, and phosphorus are right on point.
So remember I how Always am taking about the package being a legal document...well there are only 2 real life stages defined for the package 1. growth 2. adult. You won't find a AAFCO lifestage for senior. So, you are doing just right. Find a food that is lifestage for an adult, but then meets the requirements we talked about for senior. And please share with us this perfect food!
George, I wouldn’t get too excited about AAFCO. They are the ones that keep these vague definitions so you can’t see the quality of their ingredients without getting the mineral levels. And to not have any guidelines at all for cats is criminal! A Senior food could be kitten food and simply labeled Senior. Good for you for finding one that actually controls some levels. You should send the actual nutrients to the doc and she can compare them in the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition book. I have given mine away when I retired! Should have known better!!
@@George.J I remember talking with a rep from Farmina, another Italian company, and I was impressed by their mineral levels. If we all just evaluated foods that way 80 % of these food companies would disappear!
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy so I decided to try Hill’s Adult 7+ instead for now, I ordered a bag which will arrive tomorrow! And I just want to say this in case people come across this and read my comments: I chose Hill’s not because I was blindly influenced by your or Dr Rea’s videos, but because this brand sticks to the science only and has the proper nutrients for pets.
