What your describing sounds very similar to GRID 2 in playstyle, though G2 at least had an offline quick-race mode.
Also, GRID multiplayer has never been popular for some strange reason. I've encountered _maybe_ three people in GRID 2, despite playing during the Summer of 2020. It's just one of those games that doesn't really seem to be popular in the multiplayer category.

Imma have to agree, bigger titles just took the spot light from this game. The game kinda reminds me of older simcades like toca or nfs shift with including a campaign.

The game looks beautiful and sounds pretty good. Controls feel the same as previous iterations. My biggest issue is the damage model. It's horrible. I don't know if licensing with manufacturers forced them to limit damage, but it's nowhere as detailed as the first Grid. Why? Sheer laziness? My next issue is the sound when you hit a wall - quite possibly the most generic and pathetic weird tinny sound. Hard to explain. And my last issue is the massive amount of sparks when you rub with other cars - like wtf. Really stupid. It's too bad, cause the rest of the game is decent.

Codemasters still dont get what made GRID 1 amazing, and I doubt they ever will.

This is so true. Same could be said about the Dirt arcade series after Dirt 2.
