Another thing worth mentioning is your children will thank you for decluttering their toys when they're grown up! I'm in my early 20s and have been burdened with the task of decluttering my numerous childhood toys because my parents were too sentimental to do it. I've spent countless hours listing them to sell and give away because I feel environmentally obliged to do so rather than sending them to landfill or donating.

My family is like that My parents and my uncle/aunt. They get for Christmas at all the houses full on "santa" I have 3 children. It's always like that plus they get them stuff regularly. I get so overwhelmed. I'm super grateful and it was that way with me growing up bc I was an only child for a very long time and I'm the oldest grandchild/niece. It's really a blessing but a curse at the same time. I've tried toy rotation etc. Now that we're starting school I'm really being the bad guy and saying keep this stuff at your house bc with 3 it's too much. Everywhere is full of "stuff"

Thank you for the promotion of selling your toys. Virtually everyone on minimalist groups is telling me NOT to bother selling stuff. But honestly selling it to other collectors or families really helps me deal with the guilt and sadness. It replaces it with seeing the joy of the person buying it, as well as a bit of cash. I also have found that by selling it you clean it up and help insure that it goes to a home where it will continue to have life rather than ending up in the trash or damaged.

I totally get what you're saying, but for me persobally its such a huge step to declutter in the first place that once im done, i just want the stuff gone! What's broken/damaged goes into the trash, some things they still kind of like but haven't used in a long time goes to grandma's house so its not gone but also not cluttering up the kids room and they still get to play with it when we visit. The rest thats stikl good ill donate. If tried selling thibgs a few times but it's so much work negotiating with different people until one actually takes it, sending it, going ro the post office... It takes up so much time and you have to keep it around until someone wants it too. Its just not for me. Lol. But everybody is so different so if you fibd it works for you then thats really great and who doesn't love a little extta cash? ;)

I sell the big or expensive stuff (grown out bikes, furniture…). I am a working mom and don’t have the time to sell every little thing. What I don’t sell or give to the little cousin will be donated. But if I was a stay at home mom I certainly would sell more, especially some high quality clothes. The problem is (and I am guilty of this, too) that selling needs time and in extreme cases the things wait MONTHS to leave your home and probably will catch more clutter. I actually forgot a basket of things I wanted to donate for a whole year and just recently found them again. And I am on my minimalist journey for eight (starting) or six (seriously starting) years.

I used to struggle with so many toys, but before xmas or bdays, we would donate bags of less favorite toys. My daughter gave up all toys except her beanie boos the summer before 5th grade. I kept a few special ones as a keepsake inside a tote with special drawings, school work, and baby outfits. I was a little sad. She grew up quickly and decided she didn't want her toys. She was happy to sell and donate them to other kids who would appreciate them. If you are struggling....they won't be babies forever and will get rid of them eventually. I do agree that fewer toys will be appreciated more, in a world so materialistic that it is important to have gratitude.

  • @EmmaAppleBerry

When theyre older and dont have much "share/group" toys and belongings you can get small trunks for the end of their beds and they can keep just their things in there and when theyre mature enough having a combination lock or a key lock (that you also know or have a spare key for) on the trunk will feel like they have true privacy and safety even if their room is shared or if you are still resposible for going in and out of their room for laundry cleaning etc that way even if they know mum has free access to my room or my brother and i share a room that theyll still have their safe private space thats just theirs and the trunk/container/toy box/military metal box or even old big toolbox is there limit to those things.
I love the trunk method since it ages with them you can get it when theyre born and they can take it with them when they move.
The best part is it can store anything blankets when theyre babies stuffed animals books toys teenage stuff memory stuff valuables so even if they stop using it in their bedroom they can use it as a coffee table or for their own child.
Its very easy to paint it or change out hardware to update too and good solid ones made of wood or metal will last forever which is great because theyre often expensive.
I love furniture and belongings that grow with the person and are classic and timeless. I think thats a very minimalist thing to only buy things that are multipurpose long lasting and really earn their keep.

I have four kids. I have spoilt them with toys. As a kid I was fostered and hardly had any toys. I wanted them to have s better childhood. I have been decluttering for 2 years now but keep buying them more for Christmas etc I have had a light bulb moment this year. I am annoyed I wasted so much money. It really is a big lifestyle change. We normally take the kids our with us to the shops and they want things and we give in. Now we are not going anymore. I will now not buy them toys for birthdays etc it will be hard but I'm committed and will keep de cluttering.

I am not a parent. I am a 14 year old girl watching this video. The answer is you might ask? Because my I hate my bedroom. My room hasn’t gotten an upgrade in the last 5 years. I have too many toys. I don’t play with them anymore and I’m going into high school next school year and it’s time to move on from childhood. I am currently decluttering my toy bins. I am keeping the toys that im attached to the most and getting rid of the majority of them. I have three piles which is keep, give away to Savers, and garbage which is mostly crayons, paper, beads, and other crap I find. The toys I am keeping are going into the attic in storage. The “ toys” that will be kept in my room are my stuffed animals and my American dolls. Those I’m never getting rid of. But the majority of my toys are going away. No I will be playing with my American girl dolls or stuffed animals. They are just going to be decorations. I might occasionally change the dolls hair and clothes but that’s pretty much it. Please don’t attack me just because I’m not a parent but I hope someone feels the same feelings I do when it comes to decluttering childhood.

I made a grammar mistake because my comment said I was going to play with my dolls and stuffed animals. I meant I will NOT be playing with them. They are just for decoration purposes only. Like I said before I will occasionally do my dolls hair and change their clothes but that will just be sometimes. Sorry if anyone was confused.

Mari Kondo helped me so much with the rest of the things, but the toys were the thing that gave me such a huge anxiety and an endless cleaning and organizing routine devoured ALL of my free time. I live in South Korea with my Korean husband, and it feels like if the American kids have 47% of all the book and toys on the planet, the rest of it is definitely owned by Korean kids. So, my struggle to survive (well, mentally at least) led to discovering Joshua Becker and his "Clutterfree with kids", but it just didn't seem real - how is it even possible? I’m so glad I came across this. Right now I’m so overwhelmed by the clutter in my house. Mainly so so many toys, books cuddly toys and kids clothes. It all started 13 years ago when my father who I was so close to died. And I became so sentimental. Keeping everything especially things from my family members because I had the mindset that one day they will die and I need something sentimental from them such as years of Christmas cards, Birthday cards, presents off my grandparents who have now passed away but the gifts I really would never use!. But enough was enough not so long ago and I had someone else to help de-clutter my house without me seeing or I’d of keep saying - no I’ll keep that, no such a person gave me that. I don’t know what was thrown out although I know it’s nothing valuable or too important. And I felt so relieved seeing a tidy space and didn’t have that guilt of what I’d thrown out. But upstairs is next!. The dreaded toy room. I’ve done really well to be honest. I’ve put a lot to the side for charity. My children are lazy and won’t help me! My eldest has said she doesn’t want toys anymore so that’s made things easier to get rid of. It’s mostly their new born baby clothes they used to wear. So I’ve kept just 5 items instead of the 245 items I’ve given to charity

It made it easier for her to know where her things were going. I always ask her to help declutter her things, from clothes, to books to toys. Sometimes it takes her a long time to get rid of an item, it always seems to help her if we have some she can pass it on too. I wish I could do this, but my kids are all teens and have their own beliefs. Luckily they are pretty minimal compared to most kids but sometimes I wish it was more so lol

I have 5 boys and 4000sq ft of TOO much stuff! You can not fathom the amount. We have so many toys my kids cant even use 2 of the rooms anymore. I am def a sentimental hoarder. 90% of our problem is toys and clothes. I don't get rid of things because I have more kids that will use it. They are preschool to senior. I am planning to just purge somewhat like you did. We just decided to sell our house asap and moving into a much smaller home. I need a reset and just cannot live this way anymore but saying that...I do not know where to start. I did not realize how hard this would be. I cried watching your video (I do not do this ever)...I feel trapped by stuff. Robbed of space time. I feel trapped by memories and the need to hold on to them by keeping things. How did you start? I want what you have now. Thank you for this video...it hit my soul in ways I cannot even put into words. xoxo
