  • We did it fam! I hope you enjoy this 1000 subscriber THANK YOU special minimalism Q and A! To celebrate hitting 1k subs I asked YOU for your family minimalism questions and boy, did you deliver! I am going to talk a little bit about my history with hoarding disorder, extreme decluttering sentimental clutter, our minimalist journey as a family, a little bit about being an expat (twice!) and slow living in Europe, the languages I speak, and HOW OLD I AM?! If I missed any "minimalist family q and a" queries you can drop them below -- maybe we can do another get to know you session in the future (to celebrate 100,000 subscribers maybe, lol?)

Make sure to watch until then END and then come down here and give Robin some comment support! This stuff is HARD and there are no good one-size-fits-all guides for dealing with sentimental clutter and emotional baggage that often comes with it! You can also drop any questions I missed for future video fodder. Thanks, fam! 🙌

I think your response to Robyn was perfect. If the furniture is just sitting there, donate it and someone will most likely pick it up and give it the love it deserves, and Robyn can be free of the guilt!!

I love this video! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. My Dad committed suicide back in April 2019. At the time I was 18 living with him and I had to clean an entire house full of his childhood memories and mine and sell it before the winter. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, choosing what to let go and keep. I have a storage unit full of those memories and mine that I’ve kept in my lifetime. I’m thinking of decluttering it before I get a house of my own, not anytime soon though because it is still way to early for me and I cry every time I think about it. But seeing how you do it and going through all the sentimental things is very helpful. So thank you❤️

Marissa. Thank you for sharing all that you do. It is March of 2023 and I am watching this video for the first time while binging your channel as I finish my minimalist journey. I want to also give an early congrats to almost 200,000 subscribers. You have come a long way and made a difference in the lives of so many including myself.
I want to say to Robin if she is still around: I agree with Marissa but I want to also add, that no amount of money is worth sacrificing your mental health.
I myself, had a couple collectables in my donate pile and the fact was, they were in my donate pile because I had sold on Ebay before and did not want to go through that tedious process again. I got backlash from doing this because people not in my shoes generally said "You could make money from this or that." But the fact was it gave me anxiety to have to go through the process again. I came to the conclusion that it was not worth my mental health and wellbeing to go through the process to sell things again.

I had some things I inherited from my mom that were difficult to part with. I decided to keep one small rocking chair, some handwritten recipes, and one nice piece of jewelry, which I had reworked to a style that I would enjoy more. I never regretted what I did because my mom would never have wanted me to keep things I wouldn’t use out of a feeling of obligation. I’m a mom and I wouldn’t want that for my children.

Hi! I don't know how I cam across your channel but it is awesome! I live in Jamaica and embarked on a massive decluttering in 2020 in an effort to get to the point of being a minimalist. I cut my library by 75% which is no easy feat for a retired teacher, gave away clothes, shoes, and lots more. I believe I am on the right track and have the right mindset to get there. When I heard Robin's question it reminded me of the furniture my mother left behind when she migrated and the subtle encouragement to keep them because of the sentimental value they had - to her. These pieces were in various stages of disrepair and the cost to repair would have been astronomical. What I did instead was pull them apart. We're talking about a massive wardrobe, a cabinet and a bookshelf that is older than I am (I'm 46.) What I decided to do was repurpose the wood that was salvageable. So I will be using some of the wood to make bookshelves and a desk for my new office space when I move. So that is one way of dealing with furniture clutter. The next thing I need to attack is the amount of crockery she left behind as well.
Now let me go see what other videos are over here. one love.

I JUST gifted a huge set of china and gold flatware that i never used or wanted. I have some other items to purge that are hand me downs. I used my local Buy Nothing group, this is a world wide project and they have a website to find your local group. The feeling of finally doing something with all of this stuff, no longer thinking about what to do with it, was amazing!!! Bonus, someone in my community gets to have it that genuinely wanted it! My brain feels happy and at peace now.

This was an incredibly helpful video in my task of dealing with both sentimental & crafting clutter. I've been on my decluttering journey for 5 years and now onto minimalism. I continue to reap the rewards of simplifying & always keep in mind that when it's something I'm having difficulty letting go of I give myself time & space. For really difficult items I have a holding area for these items before I donate/give away & it helps me remove the emotional attachment. Then when bagging/boxing items I remind myself how these donations will bless someone that truly needs & uses the item again.

New subscriber here! Your "type" of minimalism makes total sense to me. It is a more practical and meaningful way to decluttering. Hearing your stories and the emotions you go through while decluttering help me understand the thinking process and justifications for certain actions that are required when going through the minimalism journey. All this is to say, thank you and keep it up! *SIDE NOTE: I am 30 and it inspires me to see "someone your age" be who you want to be at this present moment just because that is what you want to be. I constantly measure myself based on the life standards of others and your videos help me remember that it is my life and my family's life that matters.

Hey, Marissa and Robin!! I've had the same issue with furniture. What helped me was to donate to people I knew (or came to pick the items and I got to know) and were in need, so I realized the items were appreciated. That's the best you can do to honor the memory of those who passed, in my opinion. Lots of ❤️ from Brazil!! 🇧🇷 Thank you for your amazing videos!!

Congratulations on the milestone of 1000 subscribers. Thank you for being so real, emotions and all. I feel that a lot of people when they talk about minimalism on or off UA-cam, choose not to show that part. And I understand. It is personal and sometimes it wakes up emotions you didn't even know you had and don't want to share with the rest of the world. Also thank you Robin, for baring a part of your soul. A part that is weighed down. I agree with Marissa to choose to let it go. Maybe you can make a picture of the things you let go that hold a personal connection to your loved ones. And that you write down the memory and make a memory box for yourself. That way you can honor the memory of your loved ones and give things forward so others can make new memories with them.

I just got to watch this and it’s crazy to see just how far you’ve come since you first filmed this! I too identify with Robin as we had this huge beautiful bed frame inherited from my hubby’s parents.. it was a Cal King bedframe and when we moved from Cali to NJ, we had nowhere to store it so it went into a storage unit for over a year! Finally we were able to find someone who wanted to take it and it was literally a huge weight off of our hands. Now we have NO bed frame and lots more space in our bedroom hahahaha.

I think you are learning video making and editing so welll - it's soooo hard ( for me anyway) and a huge time suck when it comes to editing. So kudos to you and certainly there is no age cap for anything... people need to lighten up! And many of these things just require a cultural shift... Oh, Robin's question struck a chord. In a way inheriting things is almost like having an albatross hanging around your neck. I know that I have some items that have to be shipped off once my aunt dies, she's been talking about decluttering but I have this fear that things I have an attachment to will get sold or given away. She already did it to some china that I wanted to donate to the local historical house, but then again the idea of packing it all up and shipping it all off was so much work, so I've made my peace with those items being gone. It's hard!

    • @AtoZenLife
      @AtoZenLife  3 роки тому

I know exactly what you mean about the albatross, heavy as any ancient Mariner ever carried! I’m glad you have been able to make peace... I have found the IDEA of decluttering is often harder and scarier than the actual process. Once you get to the point of actually decluttering, it can be extremely cathartic. ❤️

Also that can be a form of judgment and i don't like judging people or judgmental at all. People please be nice and let people do what they want to do with their lives. I realize this is an old video, and Robin has probably found a solution.
I grew up in a family where the heirlooms, esp. furniture were a big deal, and a source of family division. However, I found the fraction that came down to me to be more of a burden. Over the course of numerous long distance moves, I gave away almost all of it, piece by piece. Later on, I also hired a woman prior to a move to sell it straight out of the house I was packing up. Emotional for me, so I wasn't there, but because I lived in a small town, I ran into an acquaintance who attended the sale, and she told me how much she was enjoying the marble topped table she had bought. So, say a prayer, have a moment of grateful silence...whatever, and let the stuff go!
Also, EVERYTHING ends up in a landfill eventually. Consider it a burial, and maybe wrap smaller items up in a special box. Better sooner than later; things that are holding you back are already corpses.
I loved your question: "What do I want to carry forward with me into the future?" For me, that question is the answer to everything. I've had some sad and regretful chapters in my past. I want to put all that behind me.
