My first ever Console as a kid was the Sega Master System. I got it for Christmas and I LOVED it. However, Santa (My mum) got it me and so I had no choice in the games I got when I opened it.
Hehehe my Mum chose for me Golvellius and Spellcaster. I had no idea wha the hell either of them was about. But for the next 6 months I played them to death... getting to level 2 on both of them. They was sooooo fucking hard! hehehe
After those 6 months I found some fool in school who swapped me for Mickey Mouse: Castle of illusion and California Games.... classics!
Since that day I have never heard the name of that game from anyones lips. RIP Goly my lil mate, we had some good times :D
Great video mate as always, took me back to those special times in the 80s... thank you!

I really appreciate the way you describe how gaming was back in the 80s. I often feel I can’t even decide a game to play now a days. Back then, you played what was available and found the gems, like you did with Golvellius. And, what a wonderful game this was.
I miss that day. It didn’t require a AAA game that was heavily advertised to share the experience with your friends. You just sat down with them and showed them. We saw the magic.

Glad you mentioned the soundtrack. I've found it doesn't get much remix love on youtube. Last year, I made a Golvellius arrangement and uploaded it to my channel, however it hasn't gotten many views at all compared to my others. Maybe I should have done one of the overworld or underworld themes.
Might do another sometime. We'll see.

Golvellius is better than Zelda 1 and Crystalis. This game has a rocking soundtrack, a very awesome ending and a simple yet very awesome gameplay, the one hole per map rule ot thumb is really awesome, much better than Zelda 1 random cave. This game is the best although my biggest complain was knowing that you needed to find the aqua boots to be able to finish the marsh. Not to mention grinding for money is very fast too.
Golvellius, Landstaler and Lennus 2 are the three games hinting at a sequel I want the most made. I mean come on you can finish a game but when it's to be continued like this and Lennus 2 it's annoying that there never was any sequels, not to mention in Landstalker how they talked about the continent the whole game only for you to never even go there.

Great post. And i agree with Golvellius being better than Zelda (which i also love). Other Master system games i rate higher than Zelda are: *Golden Axe Warrior* and *Ys:The Vanished Omens.*

I also really loved Govellius. I was a Master System kid. I had friends with NES's, so I'd played a number of the key titles (SMB Legend of Zelda I & II). Still, getting to play some of the SMS highlights was awesome. I remember being stuck for the longest time and then accidentally finding out that later underground areas weren't hidden under a rock or accessed by killing monsters, but rather adding trees and tombstones as things to be swatted to open the screen underground passage.
I'd always wanted that Govellius sequel where you had access to all three characters. It could have been awesome!

Nice. Love the review. Golvellius have a really special place in my heart. Me and my dad spend hundreds of hours into this game. We drew maps and everything. Even found some special codes that made no sense(millions of gold or invisible).
The ending always bugged me, to be continued. I really thought it would come a sequel to the master system or a big slam from nowhere to the mega drive, but it never happen.
I think the msx got one tho. :/
    Great game John :)

  • @JaimieRain

I grew up in a Sega country, so Master System ruled, and agreed, the music is so nostalgic. This game in particular blew me away and has always been my favourite video game soundtrack. I rented it once (in 1995) and for the past 10 years I've had the intro song on my phone so it's cool when it pops up on shuffle. Anyway, I just played through it finally recently. In 1995 I didn't get far, I was young and impatient with grinding and only having 2 days with it. I think I got as far as Bachular. Coming back to it for closure has been on my "to do" list for the past 20 years. I'm proud to say I got through this game without dying once! I won't say it was easy, I came close a few times, but i got a perfect run. I did get stuck for a while, and it was the aqua boots! Maybe took me a couple of days. When I hit that tree and the hole opened I was like "how are you supposed to know this!!??" I only figured it out because I've played many many RPGs, and 8 bit ones are quite small, so you just try everything, You get there eventually. That particular screen had no holes as well, and this game, has a hidden cave on every screen, so you sorta know where to look.
And yes good mention of Miracle Warriors. I played through that about 2 years ago too and got stuck in that same final boss hunt! I eventually just searched every square in that desert till I found it (turns out I had the calculations right, I just didn't get that you were supposed to double it cos Iason took 2;steps for 1 for a normal man...like wtf I just thought that was a throw away comment! 😝)
Anyway thanks for the review. Great to see appreciation for a lesser known favourite of mine from childhood.

Love this game, one of my favorite Master System games! A childhood friend had this game and we played it a lot. Still to this day I think of Golvellius when I think of Master System music. Years later when I started collecting, this was one of the games I had to find. Box and instruction included! ^_^ And just like me as a kid, I couldn't put it down until I finally defeated it. To this day I mention Golvellius as one of the best titles to hunt for when collection for the Master System.

I love how Golvellius is even carrying the two on his shoulders as they walk toward their next grand adventure. He went from aaabsolute evil to 'Oh, you two are just so adorable, I could just... oh c'mere *lifts them both on his shoulders*' xD
That said! This ending was awesome when I was younger, and a lot of the big bad monsters in my childhood nightmares were suddenly not quite as scary specifically because of this ending. They could be beaten... they could be turned... they could give me a ride on their shoulders >8D

I remember getting pretty far in this games a kid but could never figure out how to beat it. The clues were hard to translate and I couldn't figure out what they meant. With that ending they really should have made a turn base RPG sequel, and had those three as the main starting characters, I mean you have a herbal medic/healer, a hero/fighter, and a big tough tank type guy to take the damage for you, you probably wouldn't even need any other party members, they just need an interesting story for their new adventure.

...But a lot of stuff like this has already been coming out on the new 3DS, and it has a considerably better controller layout, and the screen is just as big as the Vita. It also has FAR better shoulder buttons, so I don't see why it has to come to the Vita, when it's already on the superior hardware that the makers of actually give a shit about, and didn't immediately shoot it dead when it didn't perform up to its obscene expectations.. Eh, I'm still sore about what happened with the Vita, I invested a lot into that system, and I'm not even able or allowed to replace the failing battery mine!

I always rooted for SMS. NES seemed to lock up the market with license with 3rd party

Cool review! Something I noticed. Is the audio hardware in the SMS really limited? I know it's missing the FM hardware but still, it seems like the music for nearly all games sounds very similar, like there's only a handful of sounds that were available to compose tunes with. With the NES there was a large variety of sounds. For instance, Konami games sounded distinct from Capcom games. Nintendo games sounded different from games that came from RARE, and so on.

Oh, the password system. In some ways I miss it...not really though:p
That is nifty that the overworld theme changes when you get key items. That ending was definitely trying to set up a sequel. Was there ever one? That music is quite awesome :D

The password system was one of those nightmarishly long ones. I'll always have that password theme ingrained in my head.

If I remember correctly, there was one for The Magic of Scheherazade and that was lengthy. Why couldn't more of them been simple like the Mega Man ones?

Fun Fact: "Bible" just means a collection of writings. "The Holy Bible" (Usually just abbreviated as "The Bible") is the collection of writings that we say is from the Christian God.

I'm pretty sure the fairies give clues for every secret in the game, like hitting that palm tree. But that means you have to find the RIGHT fairy somewhere in the world, and also figure out the clue which sometimes were pretty darn vague. And yeah, half of them really talk about useless stuff. I love this game, but it sure has a bunch of weird design choices like that xD

Man. I loved this game so so much. And yes, the music. To me this game's soundtrack is the best ever made in that era. Thing is that other compile games had this sound track sound. Anyway, thank you very much for thia review i think everyone that loves rpgs need to play thia one.

I had to stop the video just before the end, any chance of flagging this video with a spoiler warning? I know it's an old game but I'm probably not alone in never having played it and I would like to at some point.
