Hey 'Randay' as I said before this format is gold - I could listen to this guy and his wisdom all day - miss The Captain - keep that torch burning mate.
Walter is a gem, such wisdom and knowledge. You’re so fortunate to have befriended him. And you’ve given him a soap box to share his thoughts about boats.
I learned to sail on a Sunfish. I loved it. If you want to sail dry, it's the wrong boat for you. But it was the right boat for me. And when the wind came up I just smiled.
Walter is a national treasure!!! I love hearing that man talk about anything!!! That is one beautiful boat ... I absolutely love the way the head was designed!!!
I just found this channel today, and have been binge watching since. I've seen drawings of Mystics, and thought they were very pretty, but seeing her with red sails is just beyond gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you Randall for another entertaining and educational video with Walter. Time spent with Walter is always a great time. Take care and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
There could never be another Cap'n. However, I wonder would Walter step into the void left, with his own particular mix of expertise, experience and humour? I suspect that Walter's book will be a best seller. I'll be buying one and keeping it on-board.
Thank you Randall for doing these videos…and thank you, Walter for taking the time to share your experiences. Letting your hair down and speaking plainly, is so refreshing and helpful. The tips for where and how to find boats is wonderful. I just have one question left: Walter…where DiD you get that hat? Seriously though. Thank you, guys.
Walter is a knowledgeable Ole salt for sure. I didn't take his advice of staying away from wooden boats. I couldn't resist. $2231 all said and done for a classic 30' Tahiti Ketch.
When you compare the outlay, a yacht is such a valuable investment for a young family, I imagine the learning, adventure and closeness it bring to the family unit is invaluable. Love the video, Randy, thanks for taking the time to share Walter, the Captain and yourself.
if i could pick one sailor to hang out with in the world, and who is alive today, it would be him…so much valuable knowledge and insight…and the shannon 37 is on my hit list…my vagabond 42 was a pig…the prices have gotten crazy on the shannons…but they are still worth every penny…you’ve done a great job of encouraging some very interesting dialogue …keep ‘em rolling!
You either have a skill in finding good ol' sailing characters; or sailing attracts more than its' fair share of good ol' characters. In any event, we're richer for it. Thanks!
Please let Walter know that you generally meet a better class of people when talking to yourself 😊 I also really miss the captain. Glad to see you carrying on as well
Fantastic interview and a focus that so many forget which is to enjoy sailing and keep it as simple as possible. For us older folks we remember life before all the electronics, pressurized water and so on. Not saying I don't have fancy stuff but the more fancy stuff the more problems maintaining it and the more reliant you become. Just watched a video where the electronics kept the motor from starting. My old diesel was recently rebuilt and no electronics. If it turns over and has fuel it will start. Most systems on my boat are exactly that simple.
Marina water is fine if you're getting it from a building. Getting it from the hose spigot on the dock is going to be different marina to marina. I've personally never gotten sick from drinking from any of my boat tanks and those included some 50+ year old fiberglass tanks. That being said I sanitize my tanks yearly with Chlorine Dioxide that sanitizes both the liquid part of the tank and the head space of the tank. Its great to see Walter and that's a heck of a nice boat for $10k. That propane stove solution is a bit sketchy though, a 1lb propane canister is very close the thermal equivalent of a stick of dynamite. I'd have looked of an Origo non pressure alcohol stove, but we all have our own risk tolerances. As always a great video Randy!
Randy, this was an excellent video and I think that Walter is rising to the occasion the more interaction you guys have. His Mystic looked to be a roomy and lovely boat, a pleasure to sail and have fun with and only 10k to buy into and small money to get it as Walter wishes it to be. More please!
That's a beautiful boat he's got there. I use a Simrad tiller pilot on my Precision 23. It's nearly indispensable for raising and lowering sails when singlehanding. I've used just a tiller tamer before but it's very difficult to keep the boat in irons without the tiller pilot. Especially when your halyards aren't led to the cockpit. So agree with Walter on that. Also agree on the pleasure of singlehanded sailing a small keelboat. It's the most relaxing thing I've ever done and makes you feel at one with nature. I do like a French press, though.😅
I wish I found someone like Walter about 30 years ago. My life would have been a lot different (better). I sailed s bit in the 1960's with my Dad on his Columbia Defender (30 ft). Unfortunately I let job and family get in the way. I know now that with a little better lifestyle management I could have had it better.🙂🙂
Randay, Mr Shannon, Capt’n Q, fellow viewers, does anyone know where to meet other sailors who are competent and patient, and willing to teach seamanship? I’m in southeast Georgia, USA… thankfully I took notes on maintenance !In 6 years I want to live onboard a sailboat. After my kids are grown and I have no reason to live in one location for more than a month at a time… I’m glad I learned that the State of Georgia doesn’t allow you to live abroad… before I bought my first sailboat!!!… love listening to Mr Shannon talk!!! So many nuggets of wisdom, and lots of common sense to! Thanks all in advance, wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
Randy, its always special time with Mr Schulz. I really enjoy those episodes. I see alot of myself in him. Well, except he can sail. I'm still skeered of open water. Got a lot of common sense. And he is still married. obv got more brains. And money. But other than that...
I think you've got a Capt. 'S' if he could give impartial assessments of his competitors. If not, please let him know I want that compact Shannon of his if he's no longer into it.
If that guy parked my car in Brooklyn he can have it talk about a legend the boat builder Walter Schultz the boat reminds me of either a Morse or a Lyle Hess kind of a mix between a Cornish crabber and a Falmouth pilot cutter but very nice design forget a gaff on that boat running backstays and the sailplan for the main flogs in the backstays cut the boom down backstay on transom recut the sails probably will sail better macaroni rig my freind times have changed sorry but look how it sails
Once he mounts those winches, it will not be an issue. Those dingdang cam cleats, that are a huge hassle to let go, will become a distant memory. I think Walter need to add a "er" to the end of the name of that boat. I almost bought a boat about that size a few years ago when I was going to work in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I didn't wind up working in Jacksonville so living on the boat didn't happen. That might have been a good thing because my wife doesn't like the water. Fun video guys and keep the good stuff coming.

Say Randay, Can't doubt the wisdom of Walter Schulz, but - isn't that small propane bottle in a non-vented cabinet a little sketchy? If you can live with a small propane bottle, I could see putting it in a small, not much larger container vented with flexible hoses - even a plastic jug with a sealed wide mouth lid - so long as it vented out and overboard. But just placed in a locker, sharing I assume bilge access does not seem right. Can you ask Walter about that? Thanks

I hope Captain Q is still with us & didn't pass on to the next world. Now that the Shannon architect has turned that $10k sailboat into a $60k sailboat, he should pass it on to me, an old disabled A&P mechanic who would love to anchor somewhere in a cove on Santa catalina island.
Captain Q is sorely missed. One in a million. Its a lot of work filming and travelling. Thanks Randay for picking up the torch.
Is he dead ?

I vote for Walter as the new Captain Q. Ya know you gotta give the youngsters a chance! He does sound like Vito Corleone so I won't say nothing more.
how do you deal/find insurance?
I'm guessing that he's self-insuring the boat and just operates with basic liability coverage. That's the beauty of the $13K boat.
