Hi Andy, I’m Tim and want to buy a sailboat. This is the only way I could get a good boat and like your show. I’ll keep watching so I can learn about best deals.
Thanks for watching Tim. I’m just a guy that goes to the boat auction and post a video so I’m not really affiliated with it but if you get on the longbeach.gov email list they will email you when the next boat auction is.
Interesting auction. I guess these are repossessed boats people didn't keep up on their marina fees, I'm thinking. Your comments are very good. The more disinterested they try to appear, the more they hope to get it. Haha. . Looks like that same guy that bid on everything last auction , is there again bidding silently. Thanks for sharing.
Good morning, My name is Frank and I come from Germany. I saw your films about the boat auction and found it very interesting. I particularly liked the Catalina 30 sailboat. I have now seen that they are also available Catalina in 36 and 42. Boats like this are often up for auction. Or similar boats. Best regards Frank
Hi Frank, there are usually Catalina 30’s at the auction because Southern California is the epicenter where that boat was manufactured. There are a lot around here. However, I have yet to see any 36’s or 42’s at the auctions. Nobody knows what the inventory will be until the day of the auction.
Sput! Nice to hear from you bro. Yeah, the auctioneer tries to keep it light. He did a much better job keeping the bidding going this time. Cheers bro 🤙🏼
I would've jumped all over that Cal 29 for $400! What a treasure. Plus they're like Catalinas. There's a godzillion of them around so there are plenty of parts and owner support. Which boat had the Stainless Rod standing rigging? I have to watch this again. Nice to see Misty checking in!
I'll have to check that out. Your C-30 is nice. My friend at the Jersey Shore, Sal, has one that's pretty much in the same family as your version. I've sailed it many times and it's a great sail.
Hey Andy! Thanks for another auction video. A simple enough question (he says, lol).... Would you think it foolish to fly in from South Africa to attend one of these auctions in the hopes of buying a viable sailboat? Something in the 30ft range would suit me well. I realize there are SO many variables to that answer, but I'm (very) not wealthy, I want to sail, and everything here is just stupid prices. $1000 I could manage, hell, probably even $5k total budget. I would obvz do all the work myself. What other costs would be involved? I remember from the last video that the boat must leave the marina within a week and so on, but what about titles, registration, certification etc? I anticipate it possibly meaning having a local friend purchasing on my behalf, in order to give time to do the necessary. If you could find time to make a basic breakdown in answer, I'd hugely appreciate it, as I'm sure would others. Otherwise I must move on and forget this dream. Thanks again.
Hello Maarten. Thanks for watching and your questions however you need to do your own research. All the links and phone numbers are at the end of the video so you need to call them and ask your questions to make your own decision. IMO, it would seem a little foolish to come all this way “in hopes” that everything would line up for you. If you have a place to take the boat and the time and money to refit it then it would work. If not then you will likely be caught in a bad situation. Again, do your own research to make your decisions. I wouldn’t want to kill your dreams but I don’t want to recommend a path that would be super difficult. Only you know what you are capable of. Good luck to you and I hope you find a vessel close to you to start your adventure. Cheers! 🤙🏼
daaaamn dude... i would have gone up to $1,200 for the 1977 islander 32, and if i didn't get that i would have definitely snagged that 1971 Jensen 29 for $400. well i say definitely, but i would have wanted to feel that floor for myself and just get a look at it in person, but from what i could tell from your vid i would of taken it. disappointed i couldn't make it this time, but ill be there for sure next time!
Dang, I wish you were there to snag one of those. The floor on the Jensen wasn’t soft from rot, it was just flexing because the fiberglass pan wasn’t super thick. I’ve felt one of those before and it felt exactly the same so I think it’s just how they are. For a day sailer / weekender it was definitely worth $400. Probably would make a good lake boat. Oh well, next time! 👊🏼
@@sailingsole well i think i would probably end up beefing up the floor some, because my goal is to do some ocean crossings and such. i want to move to the Philippines, then use that as my home base for sailing adventures. that's the end goal. so even if a boat like that isn't the best choice for the trip there, it would still be a good first boat to learn on, fix up, then sell to buy something a bit more capable after i have some experience. that's what i'm thinking anyways. hopefully i can find something like that at the auction in March
Man I want one then sailboats I'm a former commercial fishing that hasn't been on the water in over 20 years long story. I got a 4 year old grandson that I want to take out on the water I live on n a fixed income so this is what I need cause I ain afraid to work clean& fix stuff God Bless 🙏
Just bought a 32ft 10 year old Blue Water cruiser at Auction in Greece for $984 bucks…. Yep $984 bucks thats 1000 euros … i was the only Bidder . The 1977 CAL 46 would be a 3-46 (aka, 46 III), the galley on that version was in the passageway between the Bain and aft cabin, I think the 2-46 had the galley in the main cabin/saloon. So, this 1977 was the original, stock galley location. Messy as she was, I can’t believe no one wanted the CAL 29 for only $400!! Scruffy, but a true diamond in the rough!
I agree about the CAL 29. The problem with these auction boats is nobody is ready to take them to a slip. People do t prepare prop for the auction. Thanks for watching!

it is absolutely crazy the difference in boat prices from USA to UK as most them boats if the engines ran then they would be worth £1500 easy but in USA your practically giving them away , luckily for me i got a project snapdragon 24 given to me and is in very good condition apart from engine need alot of restoration , by the way do you know anyone with in depth knowledge of snapdragon yachts as i got some storage tanks that i never come across before
There's a nice Snapdragon 24 here in Florida, for sale over on the east coast by Cape Canaveral (SpaceX = Boom). I'd never seen one before. Unfortunately I'm on the Gulf of Mexico., so it's out of reach for me; geographically.
To be honest often the European vessels are far and above in superior shape, in my limited experience, I am generalizing of course , however the amount of muscle and money to restore some of these can be daunting!
God i miss my hometown there. But its nothing it used to be. Alametos bay was where we launched from everyweekend. During the week i would take the twilight boat out of newport. Western pride. Davys locker
It has changed a lot but so has everywhere. Nothing, not even small towns are what they used to be but the beach life is still great and you can’t beat the weather here.
19:58 That would be great for a military veteran or somebody on disability , they could put a good quality tent on there and live free anchored off shore a short dista
May 9 2024. For some reason don't think we will ever see a carbon fiber HH44OC or one of their dagger board 44s ever show up for a boat auction. They are that unique
True. The main thing around here is you have to have a place to put it because you can’t put it at the Long Beach marinas once you buy it because they want them out. As long as you have a place to take it then you are good.
I was wondering if you owned some land "outside the city limits" perhaps on an unmarked road could you haul there and call it home? Dig a well, septic tank and some solar perhaps star link internet.
@Paul-ou1rx Well Paul it depends on your state and local ordinances! There may be some foundation requirements and so on! For instance Oregon won’t let you live on your property in a travel trailer or motor home! Just depends on where you’re at brother!
This is very true. They take the boats because of lack of payment, which is a contract that the boat owners breached, but it is very sad when it is someone’s home.
They come from the municipal marinas in Long Beach so they are either abandoned or they didn’t pay for the slip fees then the marina puts a lien on the boat to pay for the overdue slip fees.
Boat salvage yards should be picking them up for parts... Of course they don't usually pay anything for them they wait till they can get them for free.

The big trawler had termites and 12 inches of water in the bilge. Large boats are very expensive to refit and that small fishing boat could be put on a trailer and taken home to clean and fix. That large boat was too big of a project to bring back to life.
Well I was wrong; I think I called the Islander 32 a 28. I guess I was thrown off by the angle it was shown at in the last video. Oh boy, more worthless trivia, some of which is probably wrong: The Grand Banks 42, even tho it's all teak, looked like a money pit. Pretty far gone. The Cal 46 looks like a "home-built" (finished) version bc of the salon windows, which are fewer and bigger on the production version, the layout (alley galley), and things like the combination of a "bottle gooseneck w/ a solid vang, which are sometimes considered incompatible. Bottle goosenecks can bend solid vangs. The engine (Perkins blue) looks like it has had some money already spent on it. At 8:22 you can see the Schaefer "Foot Blocks" on the quarter rail are mounted backwards, which was a surprisingly common mistake people made back then. The smaller turning block on the coaming, by the winches, is mounted frontwards but still does not fill the bill for a decent lead to a winch. Looks like the red line is a pole lift, and for off-the-wind sailing she's got it goin' on with that whisker pole. What is missing is an "over-the-top" turning block to get past the coaming edge; these were introduced by Schaefer after this boat was built. Extra points for Not having a mainsail that furls inside the mast, as that would destroy this boat's balance and ability to point. This and many other Cal 46's didn't have decent travellers but in this case is redeemed by the most excellent mainsheet-preventer combo on the back end of the boom. This combination (double mainsheet) will do anything that a traveller will do, only more safely, but more slowly. The reel winch on the main halyard is pretty flintstone, but 100% useable. It's a different animal, but not what I would call dangerous. We grew up using these things and they are not all that difficult to use except in heavy air, especially while reefing, when they can be spooky. Never a good choice for sending someone aloft, but the Andersen self-tailers on the mast and control console are pretty nice upgrades. This Cal 46 (Built by Jensen Marine) and the Jensen 29 (Cal 29) are from the same builder. The keel IS a long fin, and a cutaway as well. These 46's had spade rudders, but some may have had skegs, just like not all Cal 40's were straight spades, but upgraded (imho) to skegs. Forefoot IS by definition, "cutaway". They may have called the long fin a "full keel" on the dope sheet but there's no forefoot and no deadwood, so I wouldn't. The 46 is modeled after a famous cruising boat named "Fram". *** The Jensen 29 is a pretty good boat; they came with atomic 4's. They are so ubiquitous they're cheap but durable. Yes the cabin sole is bouncy, but they don't break. On many Cal boats you can get the keel to start swinging back and forth by simply shifting your weight from side to side. This is Not a deficiency, this is an example of good engineering. If the hulls and keel were restricted from flexing or swinging (like with owner-installed transverse floors), they wouldn't be anywhere near as strong. The dumbest thing about these 29's was the cable supported (dinette back cushion) hinged companionway step. Not to go on and on about my fondness for this design, but there's a practically "Baja-ready" 29 up in Santa Barbara that any buyer would find is the sleeper of the year, and can be had for a song. Needs TLC. I am not financially connected in any way, btw. (am I allowed to say that?) Thanks Andy; and we always look forward to a Misty cameo appearance. Cheers!
As always Marty clocking in his sailing prowess. The Cal 46 was nice but seemed like a coastal cruiser just the same. Not sure I’d want to take that on a long passage from what I saw but I don’t know much about them like you do. I’ve never liked those Cal 29’s but after hearing what you had to say about them, their stock went up a bit. I’ll let Misty know! Till next time…! 🤙🏼
They sail Very Well. Narrow sidedecks combined with tall cabin sides or dodgers can launch you overboard if the boat lurches while you're just trying to pee over the leeward side, btw. @@sailingsole

@@shopcrate5687 a marina bill is how much you have to pay for your dock or boat slip. I paid ten yrs ago $100/ft in Boston. Idk what the fees are now prob $250lol and a barge is just a floating dock
@@sailingsole thank you for the reply Andy. I’ll check out the website you mentioned.
Yep you got it right!
Good morning,
My name is Frank and I come from Germany.
Great meeting you, Misty, and Mark at the auction. Great video!
Really enjoyed this one.
Sweet! Glad to hear it. Cheers!
The auctioneer is FUNNY 😂😂😂.
Wassup JSP! Thanks for watching.
The Rod Rigging boat was in a different video. I think it was the video titled “ how we found our $3500 boat”. 🤙🏼
I'll have to check that out. Your C-30 is nice. My friend at the Jersey Shore, Sal, has one that's pretty much in the same family as your version. I've sailed it many times and it's a great sail.
When i am ready to start my boat life i am going to this auction
That’s awesome! Hope to see you there!
Once again... Thx Andy.
You bet bro 🤙🏼
Bro the trawler is a super rare boat it’s a Gillian 3 hour special
It looked nice (in its prime) but I’m pretty sure it was a wood hull and it had termites so nobody seemed interested.
Couple good deals for sure! That big boat was a gamble at 20k ya think? Have to come check out the next one
It might have been a gamble but it was pretty well cared for as if it wasn’t abandoned for too long. Best shape I’ve seen any auction boat in.
Cheers! 🤙🏼
Maybe take a look at the engines. It's a deal breaker on most boats.
👍🏼
daaaamn dude...
i would have gone up to $1,200 for the 1977 islander 32, and if i didn't get that i would have definitely snagged that 1971 Jensen 29 for $400. well i say definitely, but i would have wanted to feel that floor for myself and just get a look at it in person, but from what i could tell from your vid i would of taken it.
disappointed i couldn't make it this time, but ill be there for sure next time!
The issue is once you buy it. Where you going to slip it? There is a waiiting list. What do you do with it at that point?
Bingo!
Just like a real estate foreclosure! Repo, more or less!! A rose by any other name....(still a rose) LOL
Yep
Man I want one then sailboats I'm a former commercial fishing that hasn't been on the water in over 20 years long story.
I got a 4 year old grandson that I want to take out on the water
I live on n a fixed income so this is what I need cause I ain afraid to work clean& fix stuff
God Bless 🙏
That’s awesome. Get on the mailing list and they’ll tell you when the next auction is. Cheers!
42 foot trawler might be a Grand Banks trawler
Thanks, I think you’re right bc a few other people said the same thing.
Definitely a Grand Banks!
Thanks again Andy great video
No problem! It’s fun. Cheers!
Just bought a 32ft 10 year old Blue Water cruiser at Auction in Greece for $984 bucks…. Yep $984 bucks thats 1000 euros … i was the only Bidder . I thought that i had bought a Lemon because i was the only bidder and that it was Damaged in some way. I was Wrong its in fantastic condition it was seized by the Police , The Original owner was Jailed for Drink Driving. I’ve seen the same one for sale in the UK 🇬🇧 for £42,000 pounds.. Its Insane No one is Buying. So if your thinking of Getting into sailing Now is the Time there are serious Bargains out there..
Great story. Great deal. Stoked for you! 👍🏼
How to find auction on boats in Greece? Where did you go?
@@themothers Greece customs seized Sail Boats , They have a Auction twice a year on Everything from Phones , computers , Wearhouse Goods , Cars , etc , These auctions are held all over the World in almost every Country, And the best is the UK because you do not pay VAT on seized property as thats the very reason they are being Sold for. I actually Sold mine now it sold for $37,000 bucks in New Hampshire .
Nice to see you guys are still a thing. You lucky dog!
It’s fun to watch when you’re there. I don’t plan on buying any of those…or will I? 🤣
Wished I had a chance at that Cal46
They started bidding at $10k on that one which surprised me.
Did you guys show up on the Adv. Motorcycle to pick up a boat.... lol, nice bike & buying here I know you're ready to work
b/c all of these need some serious amounts of help ; money/time to get back into ship shape. peace
I have no idea what you’re talking about “Adv. Motorcycle”, but, ok… 🤔
Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
I do apologize ; I've been looking at Adv. Motorcycles for the last 6-8 months & right at the start in the parking lot
you've got a Adv Motorcycle. Adventures come in many forms & I happen to like both, I thought perhaps that bike
was yours but this is my 1st video w/ you so I was grasping at straws. I was making fun of the guy there going to
look at boats w/ only a motorcycle to take one home - that guy wasn't you I don't guess? No deep meanings here,

The Grand Banks eventually did sell. Two locked up motors made the woman who bought it turn it in
What do you mean “turn it in”? Please elaborate…
Long Beach agreed to take it back and have it demolished. She was having zero luck finding a place for it.@@sailingsole
it is absolutely crazy the difference in boat prices from USA to UK as most them boats if the engines ran then they would be worth £1500 easy but in USA your practically giving them away , luckily for me i got a project snapdragon 24 given to me and is in very good condition apart from engine need alot of restoration , by the way do you know anyone with in depth knowledge of snapdragon yachts as i got some storage tanks that i never come across before
That’s great man 🤙🏼. Unfortunately no, I’ve never heard of a Snapdragon sailboat before. Good luck though. Cheers!
Shouldn’t you take your shoes of before inspecting the boats?
😂 That would be courteous wouldn’t it?!
Which Notification do I choose in order to receive the Long Beach Auction update? Thanks
You need to sign up for the newsletter on longbeach.gov
Florida cities should do the same thing, they have a ton of abandoned and sunk boats in S FLA
Talk to your mayors and marinas. I’m sure the marinas would prefer to sell them than to pay to salvage them. Show them this video 😂🤙🏼
It might be an idea if you let us know how tall you are so we can see how much head room there is.....
Good idea. I am 5’ 10” or 178cm.
The same huge dude is there, trying to buy everything again =D
He got outbid on all of them from what I saw
He's probably a shill, to bid the price higher on desirable boats. Auctioneers use them all of the time.
That takes place right across from our boat slip.
Cool 🤙🏼
Great video
Glad you liked it. Cheers!

Are they still having auctions?
As far as I know, they are still having boat auctions, but they have not announced one yet this year.
19:58 That would be great for a military veteran or somebody on disability , they could put a good quality tent on there and live free anchored off shore a short dista
Ok
Great auction

How do boats end up at the auction? Do they fall behind on the birthing fees?
I assume that’s how most of them get there but I don’t know for sure
thank you for this greatly appreciated
No problem David. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
The old termite dust to put you off bidding...lol
Someone probably sprinkled it there on purpose 🤣
May 9 2024. For some reason don't think we will ever see a carbon fiber HH44OC or one of their dagger board 44s ever show up for a boat auction. They are that unique
I have a feeling you’re right.
With these prices, it’s worth the plane ticket, one could fly out there and sail back; with a little/lot of tlc
True. The main thing around here is you have to have a place to put it because you can’t put it at the Long Beach marinas once you buy it because they want them out. As long as you have a place to take it then you are good.
For $19,500 l would have bought it and had it hauled to my property and converted it into an awesome guest house!
Wow that would’ve made a million bucks on AirBNB with that idea! 😂🤙🏼
I was wondering if you owned some land "outside the city limits" perhaps on an unmarked road could you haul there and call it home?
Dig a well, septic tank and some solar perhaps star link internet.
@Paul-ou1rx
Well Paul it depends on your state and local ordinances! There may be some foundation requirements and so on! For instance Oregon won’t let you live on your property in a travel trailer or motor home! Just depends on where you’re at brother!
Once you have bought the boat, what documentation is given in the marina?
A great question for the marina office. The link is below or just Google “Long Beach shoreline marina” and call them for your questions.
You can’t tell if a Cal anything has a skeg hung rudder? Leave a note if you know what the old wood Grand Banks is
No I couldn’t tell standing on the dock.
where is this marina? How many times a year does this auction take place?
Long Beach California. Twice per year.
Thanks for the ride, great job.
Thanks Larry
Hey capt do they have auctions like this is Florida
Hi there skipper! I have no idea because I only know of this one in Long Beach, CA. 🤙🏼
The powerboat looks like it's a Chung Wah 42.
Thanks. A couple other people said it was a GRAND BANKS. Idk
Hey what happened to that little pirate boat from your last video? Was it not in the auction?
It wasn’t in the auction. I was told a few boats got scraped early and they didn’t even try to auction them. Not sure why.
Thanks sir
🤙🏼
What happens to the boats that don't sell?
They get salvaged. Meaning, they have them removed from the water and demolished. I don’t really know how or where this happens.
The guy that was buying all the boats under the starting price last time was wearing the same shirt as last time😂

@@sailingsole I'm in Virginia but I'll find a way.
Wow things are cheap in the states over here in the UK prices would be at least twice as much.
These prices don’t reflect reality 😂

Cheap is relative. There’s no such thing as a cheap boat. But I know what you mean. Cheers! 🤙🏼
Wow,brilliant video, can't wait until the next one.
Right on, thanks!
Who wants to bud on a trashed out boat? What does this say about the owner? Or boat owners in general?
People that want a boat but can’t afford a new one and aren’t afraid of a little elbow grease! 🤙🏼
Some of the boats still have peoples personal belongings in it still probably as someones homes they took away made the person homeless is sad
This is very true. They take the boats because of lack of payment, which is a contract that the boat owners breached, but it is very sad when it is someone’s home.
Do you have to buy it if you fall threw the deck
😂 yep!
Where do these boats come from? Abandoned?
They come from the municipal marinas in Long Beach so they are either abandoned or they didn’t pay for the slip fees then the marina puts a lien on the boat to pay for the overdue slip fees.
Boat salvage yards should be picking them up for parts... Of course they don't usually pay anything for them they wait till they can get them for free.
Plenty of salvaging going on after the auction is over…
I had a really bad year so does anyone know what the life jackets brought
🤔
Those guys brought the sawdust and sprinkled it around to run off other bidders

Me too. I was bummed for him.
Why would people pay 10k for the little fishing boat but the large trawler didn't sell? I don't understand, are there hidden costs?
Hidden costs and boats go hand in hand my friend!.
The big trawler had termites and 12 inches of water in the bilge. Large boats are very expensive to refit and that small fishing boat could be put on a trailer and taken home to clean and fix. That large boat was too big of a project to bring back to life.
I see!@@sailingsole

SKATE OR DIE!!! 💀🛹
Well I was wrong; I think I called the Islander 32 a 28. I guess I was thrown off by the angle it was shown at in the last video.
Oh boy, more worthless trivia, some of which is probably wrong:
The Grand Banks 42, even tho it's all teak, looked like a money pit.
***
The Jensen 29 is a pretty good boat; they came with atomic 4's. (am I allowed to say that?)
Thanks Andy; and we always look forward to a Misty cameo appearance.

it's crazy hw they pay for those old big boat,
What’s so crazy to you? I think so too but I’d like to know where your mind is at…
Very crazy how they pay for those ugly old boat,
Surprised by how narrow those side decks are on the Cal 46.
I’m curious how that boat would sail. It had a nice layout below decks, roomy.
They sail Very Well. Narrow sidedecks combined with tall cabin sides or dodgers can launch you overboard if the boat lurches while you're just trying to pee over the leeward side, btw. @@sailingsole

The winner of that one vote for a thousand bucks was that the original owner that the marina stole it from?
No he lost his boat to a higher bidder. Very sad situation.
