I love Shenmue. I can not describe how but Shenmue is for one of the most important games i EVER played on a console back in 1999/2000. I never gave Yakuza a chance, today i got on gog the whole collection and i don't know if Yakuza has the same flow for me. I trust the very positive reviews from fans and it was a blind purchase. I hope it was it worth. The first Shenmue will be always for me the best gaming experience. Alone when you arrived the harbour the first time and the cut-scene with the flying camera through the harbour this was so amazing and i couldn't believe this was a real game. It's very sad that Shenmue III could not continue the same success, but i'm happy that there is a Shenmue III, but it came too late. Maybe with the release from PS3 it could be a good Launch-Title. Shenmue is not only graphics, it is the atmosphere and the music and i hope Yakuza can match that.
I felt Shenmue spoke to me on a spiritual level in 1999/2000 about the duality of life itself and it gave me an experience that transcended video games. 20 years later, I can’t have that same experience again now I’ve played through Shenmue in ever possible way, so I’m left with the raw gameplay loop. Yakuza 0 is leagues beyond Shenmue in terms of gameplay.
Yakuza 4 has an Infinite combo for akiyama with the quickstep cancel (does spin offs include since judgement and lost judgment have banging soundtracks)
I remember when I played Judgement for the first time, I was/am still a big Yakuza/Like a Dragon fan and Shenmue was THE game of my childhood. Seeing Yagami a fairly young guy that wears a leather jacket and blue jeans, fights using a combination of Kung Fu moves and goes through a more bare-bones and streamlined version of Kamurocho (some minigames weren't available, especially Karaoke) was the closest I've got to play a more modern version of Shenmue, and the closest I've got to feel the same thing when I played Shenmue for the 1st time.
After giving both games a chance, i think that the answer is subjective and depends on your personal preference. -if you want a fast paced rpg adventure, Yakuza is your game. -if you want a chill detective adventure in a life-simulation game, shenmue is the one. Their target audience seems to be the same, but they're really not.
Just no, it is not a "fact" ^^ "Better 80's sim" ? We just don't have the same criterias. In artistic subjective impact, there is no such things as "better" or "worse". Shenmue has a nostalgic, composed and sedate view on the late Shôwa era. It has condensed playfield, and rich attention to details (even up to the thousands of contextual dialogues). I personally so much prefer Shenmue for what it is. It's not even comparable, they aim for totally different mood, feelings and thematics.
Exactly, the UA-camr is also not even considering the fact that shenmue released YEARS before yakuza. Gaming technology made massive improvements during that time. That’s like saying, “oh the refrigerators or the TV’s that we have today is a million times better than refrigerators or TV’s from 10 years ago.” This UA-camr needs to realize you compare apples to apples and not apples to bananas. I can’t, in good conscience, give any credit to a reviewer that fails to understand that.
@@jduke367duke8 I do not take into account the fact that Shenmue is older. I don't care in fact ^^. Yeah, kebab doesn’t know how to do proper comparisons apparently. Next he will compare a dog to a fish. “Well they both have brains and they both can swim but the fish is better because we are really comparing which one can fly and fish do fly out of the water sometimes.”
For me the 1st Judgement was the closest to how I think how a more modern Shenmue should play out. Hell, Yagami is a guy in his 20s, that fights using a combination of Kung Fu moves, wears a leather jacket and jeans and he's a private eye, he's basically Ryo Hazuki with more personality and charisma.
Let’s just be honest. The people over rate and over praise Shenmue because they didn’t get it when it was new and feel guilty for the premature death of the Dreamcast.
Plenty of people played it when it was new and they still love it even to this day. That shows how much of a classic it is. It's not being overrated or overpraised. It's giving it the credit it deserves.
More like people who don't give it a chance for it to grow on them, see people who gave it a chance, stupid over raters / praisers... Shenmue is way too sophisticated and "naturally paced" (in other words, BO-O-ORING!!!) of an experience for most video game players unfortunately. To make a literary analogy, It's the 500 pages long classic novel the teacher makes you read because it's important, while silly little romantic crime novel series' are breaking the bank. But in the end, it truly IS important, while the successful stuff just goes right through you and does not change a thing.

Love both and kinda disagree on your take. Shenmue and Yakuza might be similar in many ways, but ultimately they're radically different. Shenmue feels like your slice of life simulator with point and click, mini games, virtua fighter-ish battle system along with the main objective that have to be played slowly, while Yakuza or RGG feels more like Action sandbox game with some RPG-ish elements and beat em up-like battle system. I kinda agree that it's better for Shenmue to be finished by RGG team, though I prefer if they kept the slow pace of Shenmue intact.
Shenmue i better sorry bro I played every yakuza game including the spin Off they are masterpiece 10/10 But shenmue was a 20/10 it was perfect in everyway
As much as I think Yakuza 0 has a better fight system than shenmue, I think the shenmue 1&2 did a better job at building suspense leading up to your fights. All of the constant unprovoked street fights kind of take the oh shit feeling out of the boss fights in Yakuza. The base story is very good. And as much as I wanted to get lost in the world, constantly fighting street punks was distrcting. I know you don't have to engage but that's really the only way to build your skill tree so these interactions kind of feel forced.
Just saying that being required to put more time into the game doesn't make it bad. Just like Yakuza 0 was made Like 16 years after Shenmue. Just like Shenmue 3 was bad, So were the remasters of the Yakuza games. Shenmue wasn't BETTER But it wasn't Worse. Why compare a game from 1999 with a Game from 2015 Onward? It's so old compared to Y0 And It's not like The original Yakuza games weren't Just as bad. The date of creation really makes a difference And I don't think Sega makes very good fighting games to be real, Yakuza was a complete remake of the last game with a different cast for 23 Games. The only Yakuza games with actual difference from what I know of is Kurohyou and The new turn based games. Judgement and I believe Gaiden also have Shenmue/Virtua Fighter inspired mechanics But they play out better cause they weren't made like 20 years before. As for Shenmue 3? I don't know that was just ass. But the takes on Yakuza 0 Being better is Imo outdone by Kurohyou. Just so much to do on a PSP Game. But both Yakuza and Yakuza 2 Suck compared to Shenmue 1/2 . It's almost the same game then just one doesn't have juggles and Is slower. There are also Many points in Yakuza that you need to figure something out WITHOUT A Marker on the map, Still (1999 Game.)
You do realize that shenmue 1 came at years before any yakuza game right? When shenmue first came out “quest markers” weren’t really a thing in the game. You can’t accurately compare shenmue 1 and 2 with yaluza as far as graphics, features, and gameplay unless they came out around the same time. Yakuza easily could have had better features and gameplay because they got feedback on things that were wrong with shenmue.
