Crazy TIG Tip for Aluminum Tubing

    Aluminum is very thermally conductive but when you are welding near the end of a piece of tubing, the piece gets saturated with heat and the puddle gets very watery.
    This video shows a quick tip to prevent heat from building up too much.
    A wad of aluminum also helps but copper really pulls the heat out of a part.

    When I've faced this situation in the past, I've had "reasonably" good results with a wet shop towel wrapped around or clamped to the part, as soggy as it can be without dripping much. Clearly, this has its limitations, but it's really simple and has worked for me... (no fires yet, LOL)

    Don't know if you realize it but the tail where you twisted the wire was pulling lots of heat away and cooling the wraps quickly. The air was allowed to cool it quickly and since it was only near the heating area occasionally it was doing a great job of pulling heat and removing it.

    I've used the braided copper wrap when welding stainless tubing and it works great. Consistent ground and no arc marks. You can even use the copper-coated aluminum cable that these days you'll often find substituted for full copper.

    That was a really good tip, I have often found it difficult to weld small pieces to large pieces such as you demonstrated. I think I have some old worn out welding lead around here somewhere. Thanks!

    On aluminum intake pipes especially with pie cuts with a lot of welds close together. I make a few runs then shoot compressed air through the pipe until I can touch it without getting burned. Then continue and repeat as necessary

    The braided copper ground strap is a clever remedy for a moving part. I’ve seen chains used for grounds in the field.

    Braided ground straps for cars are nice too. Usually tinned copper so they hold up to moisture better than bare copper.
    Del City 224100 is a nice 24 inch 4AWG that's all braid except for the ends. (Wisconsin company)
    Deka 01051 is a 26 inch one but it has a bunch of lugs in it. Can be found in a lot of farm supply and car parts stores though.

    Rocking the Primeweld, that was my ticket into tig welding aluminum, great machine! I’ll definitely refer/review to those settings next time. Still a newbie, but with good success do to UA-camrs like you, proper machine settings is difficult for me, that and the dab 😜 thanks!

    Awesome video Jody I use a copper wire like that for a ground on pipe a lot learned that from you a long time ago. I remember first time I tried it at work and a few of the older people that I work with either never new about it and one guy part shop owner older guy was like that’s not gonna work . Well to this day anyone in that shop that has to weld or ground a pipe uses a copper wire now 😂funny story, so thank you for that tip
    I’m bummed out Jody I didn’t get a chance to meet you at Fab tech I seen you but you had a crowd of people and thought I’d stop back later and never made it around maybe next time thanks for the great video .👊🏻

      @@weldingtipsandtricks your strength for time because your probably the most popular person there lol I don’t think FABTECH would be that popular if it wasn’t for you . Every year you talked about it on the podcast I wanted to go just couldn’t make it happen each year.
      that was my first FABTECH I didn’t really have a plan just walked up and down isles found out after a day and a half you kinda need to research what booths you really wanna go to and make a list. Fun time I learned for next time 🍻

    Awesone video, Jody. He Have you tried the Primeweld Mig 180 with Dual Shield wire? Do you think that machine would do well with it?

      I have not tried dual shield with the mig180 yet. I think it probably would do ok for small jobs using .035". I will put that on my list of videos to do

      yes sir. 1 amp per .001" will get you in the ball park up to around .125". a bit less for stainless a bit more for aluminum. After .125" thick it starts to get wacky

    Copper works good, but for something like this I would probably weld on a longer piece and then cut to length after.

    Isn’t that cup too big for aluminum welding?!
    I think I’ve seen on one tutorial being advised, not to use cups bigger than 7-8. They’ve said that too much of argon coverage is not your friend when welding alu. They said that narrower trail of argon makes your puddle and welding more stable.
    Is there any sense in that? I would really appreciate your view on this.

      A lot of welders like a #5 for aluminum but a 7 or 8 can work fine too. I used a #7 cup this video. While it is true that smaller cups help limit the etch zone, I like to use a #7 clear cup for filming so that I can extend the tungsten further and also get a clear shot of the arc and puddle.

      Bad evaluation and honest mistake from my side.

    As a San Antonion I eat tacos A LOT... I noticed the foils were different and ponderd what difference it makes I've attempted to save them for welding wiring purposes but my attempts for cleaning the foils without making a hole proved to be pointless
