Hildie is adorable. Also those cards of her are neat. That said the only rats i regularly play are the ninja ones from Kamigawa in my ninja commander deck.
The pumpkin sweater on the bird stuffed toy is so adorable. The skeleton one also looks dapper, spooky even.
Rats have been my #1 for 9 years starting when my babies passed away, followed closely by Eldrazi. You and people like you are a blessing for caring for all the darlings that people let go
I was sure I’d see Rat Colony here. You haven’t lived until you’ve played someone whose entire deck is nothing but Swamps and Rat Colony.
Or at least Relentless Rats. ---which is the better Rat Colony
@@Duskrequim not exactly rat colony has a cmc of 2 and gets buffed with all rats so it has upsides on relentless rats.
@@ryznak4814 I tend to prefer my relentless rats out toughing then the 1 toughness rats that can easily die.
My first Commander deck was 25 Rat Colonies and Marrow Gnawer lol
@@Duskrequim you haven't lived until you've either played or played against a deck of 20 swamps 4 thrumming stones and 36 relentless rats.
I really want to see rats in other colors. I feel like rats could fit nicely in Blue (lab rats) or Green (natural rats or mice). Blue lab rats could give mana for sacrificing them like how scientists use rats for experiments and making medicine. Greem rats/mice could be token generators or more evasive than Black rats since there in their natural habit and can breed and hide more easily.
Heck, I think they’d work in white too. Make them familiars! We got raptors in white, so why not? - RA -

my second commander deck ever was a Marrow-Gnawer deck and my love for rats began. Also surprised relentless rats, marrow-gnawer, or oger slumlord showed up.

No way rats are illegal as pets
@@GigaBoost Alberta prides itself as one of the few landmasses in the world for being rat free (Antarctica, South Georgia Island, and Macquarie Island being the only others). A couple of billion of dollars are spent every year to keep rats out of Alberta, and it saves several more billion of dollars in damages caused by wild rats in the agriculture industry, which is one of Alberta's bigger industries. It also saves loads money in property damage, as rats can chew through most building materials.
We can still have other rodents as pets, though, such as hamsters, mice, and guinea pigs. Although I think permits for being able to own pet rats should be a thing, I am grateful that we are rat free here, at least when it comes to wild rats. Wild mice can still cause problems like chewing through wiring and food storage, but rats can do it on a whole other level.
That's amazing to hear about your rescue work! Rats are the best, and all rodents in general. I've had pet rats for over 16 years now. Hildie is so precious and has my gf's favorite rat coloring.

I'm surprised ya boi Marrow-Gnawer, Relentless Rats, and Rat Colony didn't make it to the list.
That being said, my favorite commander deck is rat tribal and a lot of the cards I've used are here.

You should do a top 10 Innistrad (the plane) cards. Like, any card printed in one of the 6 (or 7?) sets that take place on the plane.
I've done a top 10 for each individual innistrad set except the most recent one, so I don't think that's necessary.
Ahhhh rats. They're definitely a creature type I quickly found myself not liking after an EDH game. But hey, with not a single card having anything remotely close to Vintage points, I think my apathy towards rats is fair enough. I've never actually had a pet rat before, I've had mice which I found stink quite a bit, but obviously mice and rats are different animals, I've just never owned a rat, not because of any objections to them, but because I very much am a dog person when it comes to pets. Hildie is very cute, just sittin there chilling. I wonder what it thinks of this top 10 list? But hey, since most of the rats seem to be from Kamigawa block, maybe there'll be a Kamigawa card with Vintage points, perhaps even one that makes it into "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"

Sincerely surprised that old Marrow-Gnawer wasn't on the list. If memory serves, I played against at least 5 different people who played rat tribal decks with at least 2 copies of him during Kamigawa standard, which is far more than any other legendary creature from all 3 sets combined (except possibly Isamaru in white aggro decks).
At my local store in Kamigawa Standard everyone was playing Kamigawa tribes too. But at the highest level of competition, that wasn't true at all.

Mine and my brothers first favorite deck was the rat deck. Just had a bunch of cheap rats and nightmare. And always won lol

One of the first tribals I actively built and kept up with. Nothing says insane like a Relentless Rat deck
I remember my Relentless Rats deck. Dark Ritual and Simian Spirit Guide ramp into Thrumming Stone and Pandemonium. Then play a Relentless Rats, let Thrumming Stone's ripple ability apply to Relentless Rats which churns through your deck, and drops out all your Rats, then they bring a lot of damage entering the battlefield through Pandemonium. It's hilarious and game ending.

I played a playset of Pack rats in my homebrew 8rack deck. It makes every bad draw a rat! Also Shoutout to my boy Chittering Rat, my favorite Wincon in Chainer, Dementia Master edh.

Slivers are hard to do, because apart from a couple of outliers, all their points came in the same decks.

I was soooooo disappointed that Pied Piper from Eldraine wasn't Legendary. The idea of a Rat Tribal commander deck with Pied Piper as the commander is such a missed opportunity.
Our fancy rats have been far better pets for my daughter than I ever would have imagined.

you should have made an honourable mention of plague rats. back in the day there was no maximum number of cards you could have in a deck. a deck that got made alot back then was consisting of swamps, dark rituals and plague rats. (and if owned, a nightare or hypnotic specter). hugely effective for its time.

Rats of Wrath is the only card on this list that I don't alrdy own seeing as I've had a relentless rats edh for a long time n bought up so many rat cards to fill out some other spots. Ink-Eyes is so good in combo with the decks main general, Marrow-Gnawer, cuz once all rats have fear it's pretty easy to find 1 of my opponents that I can hit to trigger that ninjutsu
I got into magic because of how many cards there are it felt like I could build any type of deck I wanted. Knowing nothing about the game I went with zombies and birds because I thought that would be fun and unusual. Eventually I switched to zombies and rats. Now I just play zombie tribal but still love rats.

Ink Eyes isn't exactly a powerhouse of modern or vintage, but it is worth over 20 dollars a pop. Why? Ink Eyes is VERY popular in certain communities.

The reason that people think rats are unclean is because sailors would find rats on ships and would get sick, so they equated the sickness with the rats. They didn't know that it was actually the fleas that were making them sick

Nizzhon trying to convince us that rats don't carry the plague.
Read a modern history book
They don't. Fleas do. That would be like calling humans carriers of typhus or malaria.
People at the time had no idea where plague was coming from, they only figured it out in the 19th century. So, hard to blame our misconceptions about rats on plague. Plus, fleas were a necessary middle vector to infect us. We wouldn't have caught it from rats without the fleas, so I think that means the fleas are more to blame. It has more to do with them infiltrating food stores and the like.
@@NizzahonMagic Except the people with superstitions about and fear of rats were more likely to not be infected, and therefore more likely to survive, crowding out those that did not have superstitions and fears.
Also, rats still spread the plague, whether the people at the time knew it or not.

What you're saying isn't backed up by sources. People blamed stuff for sure, but the main causes people came up with were:
1. God's wrath
2. Jews poisoning wells
3. Witches
4. Cats
As you can see, rats don't get any mention. This is true in sources throughout the world.
So the idea that rats were spreading the disease in the 14th century wasn't a thing.
And, again, it is the fleas that spread the disease, not rats themselves! You need both.
And yeah, they were an important vector, and they can spread other diseases too with an intermediate vector. But that would be like assuming dogs are bad because they can give you rabies.
