I haven't lost to a rat deck yet. They are all terrible.
Against some decks they are terrible, against some, they are annoying, so i got the few deck that doesn't do well against them and some who are annoyed by them. Voilà! I got an 5/0. Obviously I didn't played against you. :)
I play Noxious' Grixis Turbo Rats every now and then when I want a win or two. It's fun but it dies fast unless you get Tetsuko out on turn 5
That's because the deck is busted and format destroying...not fun to play against...hence why you went 5/0

Rat Colony has soon become the #1 rated mono black deck in Commander as well. You can't escape the rats. Marrow-Gnawer knows.
In Commander, Relentless Rats is superior as they won't die to 1/1 chump blockers
Not dying to blockers is a good note. The Mana efficiency of Rat Colony isn't something to overlook when it come to cards like Vanquishers Banner, Thrumming Stone and Bontu's Monument. Rat Colony also get +1/0 for all rats. Not just Colony. Making it work wonders with Marrow-Grawer and the right evasion cards.

Evan Scott Farshadow there's tons of tribal +1+1's for rat colony and they Drop faster. I've tried both in my edh marrow-gnawer rat colony is waay faster

Add Mephitic Vapors or Cosmotronic Wave to your Pauper Decks to teach those Rats a lesson.

I knew this was gonna happen, so almost every deck I made ran mephitic vapors, but I didn't run into any rat colony decks except the ONE TIME I decided to try a mono white enchant build. honestly this deck cracks me up and I think it's pretty funny to play and play against. Have fun with it!

Go the rats! This deck was hilarious at FNM with the non-Pauper variant, adding Tetsuko for non-blockable rats. Most opponents easily stopped it getting out of control, but swinging in to victory with an army of beefy rats had both myself and my opponent in stitches. It’s just so ridiculous!
Dude, I love you, I completely overlooked a rakdos rat deck. omg. I have a very nice dimir control pauper deck that I've went 5-1, 5-0, 4-2 with, still need to get me 2 more firemind's research. Oh man I'm gonna have some fun messing around with rakdos rats :D.

Well that was a super Night Vale/Desert Bluffs intro. Love it.
I just made this deck and in my first game the opp scooped when I played the first rat colony. It works!
Came to this video a little late. Have been seeing this a lot on the ladder. Fortunately, this is a very manageable to beat deck, though it can definitely get some nice wins in. It is a very easy and cheap way to build a deck for this event and thanks to the prof for showcasing it!
If you a sick of losing to this deck (which, judging by the comments below many are annoyed by this deck), I highly recommend running a Dimir or Golgari Midrange. Mephitic Vapors is very powerful against it, as well as all the Selesnya Tokens decks, many Boros Builds, and hoses the Saproling Migration that is in essentially every Green deck. I have gone 5-0 with Golgari and it is a pretty solid matchup against many of the aggro builds like Selesnya and Rats. All the cheap removal and even AOE in Mephitic Vapors makes cleaning up their small creatures pretty easy.
Was winning 90% of my games with a rat deck and then realized I wanted to lose so I could win the llanowar elves faster, so I started conceding after the first win.
I like how the reversed intro still resolves tonically. Very satisfying
UB control beats rats quite alright in my experience but that deck is also quite nasty in the arena pauper meta tbh
Hey prof, nice Fistandantalus impersonation. I've conceded multiple times against the rat colony deck when I saw the first one hit the battlefield, except once when I played a turbo saproling deck. Guess my mana and card draw were exceptional for the exception.

Played against rats a few times and only won once. But there is another deck which aims to drag the game until you deck out with mono blue counter spells, bounce spells and recycling your graveyard which I find extremely aggravating and impossible to beat unless they other person has Mana issues. At least rats does not drag the game. Anyways don't play either.
i ran into a recursion deck like you are describing. it seemed very efficient. boardstate couldnt be dealt with, the creatures would just return later.

I'm currently running an anti-meta deck with four mainboard radiating lightning and two Costmotronic wave. It feels so good.
Nah, it's all about running UB with Mephitic Vapors and every single piece of removal. Doomed Dissenters and Omen Speakers to annoy the hell out of your opponent
Just play Fungal Infection, Doomed Dissenter or Deathbloom Thallid.

I agree with the warlords fury, but i also do cosmotronic. It wipes tokens and means only 4 attacking rats are needed to kill from 20.

I paired rats with green, for the ramp and pump spells, but it was not as effective as the red pair. Still fun to convoke out the +3/+3 not giant growth off the freshly played rats for the win.
Went to max win without any spells, just full rats, now i want to try with Warlods fury and duress/divest, thanks yo fren.

Had 2 Tetsu Umezawa in there to make them unblockable, too.

I build a similar deck back when dominaria came out flashing blue to incorporate the Rogue that makes them all unblockable
I think that fungal infection is one of the best removal spells. Against attackers it can function to 2 for one other rat colony decks.
It can nerf down blockers so that they cant kill a rat deck, and give you a chump blocker.
I think prof should do an updated 8-rack modern deck showcase with this alternate personalitly I think it would have fit there perfectly.

GLAD to see my build of Rat Colony getting what it deserves. Warlord's Fury and Cosmotronic Wave are some of the best cards in a Rat Colony deck. Cinder Barrens and Evolving Wilds are easy includes because taplands on turns 1 and 3 are effectively free, and cosmotronic wave guarantees a *_brainless_* turn 5 kill barring removal or lifegain
My janky monored wizards deck happened to be running Cosmotronic Wave, the few rat decks I encountered didn't stand a chance :D
I just want to thank the Proff for making this. The amount of rat decks giving me wins is great.
I just beat the rat deck, Talon Slash, Serra Disciple, chump blockers that die and make chump blocks, creatures that tap other creatures when they attack and a lot of pump spells that heal as well. They didn't make it easy, but they also only had rats.
I love the instructor, he makes the decks I love. Magic is not for fun... at least not my opponents fun. Just mine... Just mine!!!
I must say that a Rat Colony deck is workable in Arena... as the Instructor says you will lose but you'll also get your wins! Even ran across another RC player and he was more a purist than I and persuaded me of the error of my ways... the more rats, the better!

I love playing rats, and I brought my normal rakdos rat deck (4 crash through 4 warlord's fury) to it. I won a match and then conceded the second two to give others free wins in the Christmas Spirit, as I only cared about the elves.

I have 20 rat colony cards in a Green /Black deck, with couple Charnell troll and i couple Tendershoot dryads with some Titanic growth It kicks ass!

Add Red with cosmotronic wave and enjoy the pleasure of wiping and entire board of rats with a single spell.
Like you I tried white weenie at first and got destroyed. Then I tried green ramp and an idea hit me that led to my first Firemind's research reward.
If you wanna catch people out in a fun way and get the occasional 5-0 wins, may I suggest Bristling Boars and Vigorspore Wurms with Frenzied Rage to give them all unblockable? Works well with ramp spells like Llanowar Elves and token makers to gum up the board while your boars do the work, like Yavimaya Sapherd.
How can you possibly hate the meta? I enjoy MtGA so much right now, I seriously don't understand :/

This deck is bad. Most of the time, you'll be sitting with no hand and unable to attack because the opponent has superior power on board. Also, white weenies with lifegain destroy this deck. Don't play it.
I agree that this deck is not too good. Add piper of the swarm and a few different rats and it could be a good time. You can't go straight rat colony or you're screwing yourself. It would be historic though.
Not saying rats are bad by any means. I used golgari and rakdos stompy to win. I used gruesome fate to deal leathal along the way. Got my player sets pretty quick using that approach. Saproling or gobos.
