Kurt I know you would like your son to go college that is fine but after this covid hit people really realized how important truckers a honorable trade we can't live without you guys be safe out there!
Kurt, my dad didn't want my brother or me to follow after him and become a truck driver. When I made the choice to become a truck driver, dad taught me everything he could to help me succeed. That was one of the many things that I appreciated about him and told him that while he was still alive.
You never know what influence parents and other adults have on young people. I used to ride with a truck driver when I was a kid, changing gears just like Troy. When I left school I became a telephone engineer, but after 10 years, I had had enough. I was asked by a careers advisor, 'what did you want to be when you were young?' Immediately I said a truck driver. A short time later I quit my job and started driving trucks for the next 35 years. And haven't regretted it for one moment. Keep up the videos, Kurt, they're the best.
You are definitely a member of the good guys club. If there were more people in the world like us , the world would be a better place.. keep on trucking and keep on fathering.
I caught myself smiling from ear to ear when your son completed the shifts, thinking back to my days in the 70s with Dad and his day cab 2 stick Mack with me doing the same thing from the passenger seat. Fast forward past my college degree, and 25 years in the corporate world wearing a suit and tie, and I followed my heart back to trucking.. Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.
Maybe....but how many more MORONS do you encounter in a day now? When i started in '02 drivers werent all that bad. NOW, lord help us all! That and the weather has played more of an issue the last 7-10 years. Never used to stop for weather back then, now its 2-5 times a year ill get slowed down by something.
@@aaronpatterson2369 , there are plenty of drivers that make you shake your head, but morons are not unique to trucking. I was in banking with some of the most morally corrupt people you'd ever want to meet.
Trucking is so much more fun when the kids come along. My son used to go with me when he was off from school and now 15 years later after college he drives his own truck, enjoying every day doing his own thing.
When Troy was shifting I had flashbacks to circa 1972, sitting on the doghouse of a cabover White Freightliner, shifting the 13-speed Roadranger left-handed while my uncle drove.
When I was his age, my old man had me in the drivers seat already. He told me in another six months, I’ll have ya juggling knives at the same time. 😂😂😂 Times have changed.
Yup my Grampa did the same with me. Except i wasnt allowed to go forward until i learned to backup WITHOUT pulling forward. Plus side, he drove a cabover. Downside no power steering. And dont even think of forgetting to open the doors...
I love you showing Troy how to shift. I used to sit in my dads lap he ran the pedals and I used to steer and shift . I think I was about 8years old 😁😁😁. I think opie need’s a cheeseburger 🍔. Have a safe ride 😎😎😎
Lots of memories in this for me. Tipton IA takes me back to when I was about the age of your boy. My dad was hauling granite monuments to about twenty different drops between Minnesota and New York. Driving a 150 International semi. No air, no sleeper, no power steering. We spent our first night in a small hotel in Tipton IA. It didn't even have running water in the rooms and the bathroom was down the hall. Not much different than at home back in those days. I still sometimes take a detour over to Tipton just to look again. That would be about 70 years ago for me. Keep in mind you are creating memories for your son. We make the trip from north Georgia to central Minnesota about four time per year and I 380 and 20 over to Clear Lake IA is our normal route.
Good morning from Washington state … my message for both Kurt and Troy , with your bead showing Troy how to shift the gear in kenworth sure bring that memories in my part , my dad used to drive kenworth before , 1979 W900A with 36 inches sleeper box and a Detroit 8V 92 and a 9 speed stick running to Canada periodically back then in late 70-80’s and he always have me riding with him and he let me shift the gear for him while he drive and push the clutch and I shift the gear as kenworth goes coasting the highway … it was tons of fun back then
We have limited influence over what vocation our kids will pursue. The only thing we can hope for is that they're happy doing what they've chosen, and help them succeed as much as we can.
I really enjoyed this episode. I left the union job working at Anheuser-Busch as a brewery worker, because I just didn't like working on assembly lines throwing boxes fixing machines when a can jams on the conveyor belt. When I passed my CDL and I got into the truck after my schooling I knew that this was what I was meant to do. You do a really really good job of showing what a professional driver is all about in my opinion. Anyway I've been driving a truck now for 24 years and I'm going to be 58 years old at the end of this year. I've watched videos and now going to subscribe to your Channel. Be safe and look out for all of those 18-year-olds getting a CDL out there in these days be safe, I'm out
Hello Kurt, Troy & Opie. Yet another great vlog. Thank you 4 taking us along. Great job shifting the gears little bud. We always want the best 4 our children. That is all I talked about growing up was how I was going 2 drive truck like my dad. Of course it is fun riding shot gun as kid. You get to eat at all these different places. Sleep in hotels sometimes & just chill. My dad & I favorite place was KFC. I did drive truck 4 awhile. It was fun & a lot of work. Wasn't as fun as a kid tho. I wasn't a big fan of school. I did get my hs diploma bearly. I did not want 2 attend college. I wanted 2 b a Marine. But I have asthma. College isn't for everyone. I went right into the work force. I started working in the school cafeteria in junior high. What does Troy want 2 do after high school? Have a blessed night & weekend ahead. You got time 2 figure things out young man. Just have fun. Be a kid!! Kurt you & Sarah are wonderful parents & people. 💕🙏🏼🌛😴🌞😅😎👍🏼
I agree Kurt, I want better for my son, but like Troy he was practically raised in a truck. He says he wants to do other things, but I hear him talk about trucks and I can hear the passion in his voice.
Loved your video, it showed the family side to trucking. I am such a 900 fan. Ya know yes your son can do better than trucking but can do a lot worse. Happy is what we are all about. Just do what makes you happy. I know running a 900 with a kitty and 13 on the floor would bring smiles on me face from ear to ear. Your videos are always relaxing to watch and hear. Have a great day driver and be safe.
I love how you called those drivers dum-dums 🤣 Kurt you are always so kind and respectful, even though some people don't deserve that! Safe travels and make sure Opie gets a cheeseburger or two 😋 🍔💕🐾
I may be wrong but I think the rude and crude people can be found in a lot of work places i worked in the oil and gas industry for years and it was rampant sad the kids have to experience it. Thank you sir for your videos and the work you do keeping America running.
Way to go Troy! Nice job floating those gears. Welcome back to the big road Kurt. Buy Opie a double cheese burger and I'm pretty sure he'll forgive you lol. You,Troy and Opie truck it safe 😎
Thanks for being a great Dad bro. Some of us never had one and had to learn everything the hard way. Stay blessed brother, and for God's sake, buy that puppy a baconator. Peace.
Another great video. Talking from experience I was practically born in a 78 W900. Trucking will alway be in the blood even though I am currently a tow boater. There will always be a need for truck drivers. I appreciate what you do and what the rest of my family does. Stay safe.
I used to stop in Austin Texas in a small truck stop maybe 6 or 7 trucks in the hole yard, I drove a street sweeper from the right side never got used to shifting with left hand it was a 5sp have a safe trip God bless from GA
First video of yours I’ve seen Heartland Express and I’ve been looking! Hubby drove for them 21 years. Based on Iowa expected could be on a video. I know this vid is a year old but came up on my my feed. I watch all yours that show up. Just excited about heartland truck. They still going strong?
There are more places to eat at the Iowa 80. There are the shops in the "mall". There is the giant chrome shop. The maintenance shop. Just more things to do in general.
Thanks for the beautiful Iowa scenery. There are ugly people in every trade and profession there is. He will be ok because his parents have taught him what is right and what is wrong and how to respect people. Give him knowledge and options and let him decide. Safe travels, peace
Kurt when you met up with super trucker Dan I gotta tell ya first class really looked great, well as always see you next time, keep truckin up whoop- whoop!!
I’m glad I taught my daughter how to shift a truck the company I’m with now all there trucks are automatic I’m currently driving a 18 spd auto it’s ok but I miss shifting lol. But only a few more weeks then I’m on my own leasing there trailers
That "interesting bug sound" sounded like a Cicada. Late summer they get really loud here in Michigan. Whatever happened to the $5 footlong at Subway? Poor Opie. Has to share his bed. Noooo cheeseburgers! It's hard work being a star and all the cuteness wrapped into one! Whenever you're by cornfields do you ever think of Children Of The Corn? Hear the music in your head and hope to God no creepy children come out of the fields? As a female truck driver I've dealt with some of those dumb dumbs. Thank God I have a strong backbone and the wisdom to know when to bite my tongue. Lol Good video as always! Stay safe and God Bless!
Most drivers esp newbies stick to what their apps tell them to go. Experienced drivers know the secret places on off roads and likely still use maps or their memory. My hubby drove the same kind of roads as you breaks up monotony less traffic as well as secret places and mom pop great eat places.
I was driving trucks and buses at 14 my dad always teaching us. I gave my two boys same opportunities I had and more. I raised them as a single dad after their mother left. Today one is a successful electrician and one died at age 20 of a drug overdose. You can only do your best for them and pray they turn out. You sir are doing a great Job. Keep on trucking stay safe.
That truck would make a great parade truck. Opie looks like he's put on a few extra pounds. He's looking good though. Y'all stay safe and give Opie a belly rub. Good Night all and God bless each of you.
Nice job slipping gears by "Buddy", wonder if that makes Oppie jealous. Saw you in a recent Super Trucker Dan clip, evidently you didn't hang around that long. When you were on VACATION in UTAH, Trucker Josh made a delivery in IOWA with HIS NEW 2008 KW W900L Flat Top "Ole" Blue", since then he's back in Canada on home turf delivering Farm Implements to Sascachewan, Canada he picked up from John Deere on his last trip to USA. Cheers from Deer Park, Tx. where we are recovering from 2 weeks of 100+ degree weather, 🙂
Interesting topic, future jobs when your son hit that age what will there be? Now UPS have fleets that run themselves, markets shift etc.. Need to home in his strengths and then look at what he would excel at.
the thing to tell him is to get a skilled trade , thats where the money is! and security as well , unions will pay for your schooling no mater what he chooses get into something that is not a job! but something he enjoys doing! a trade that he wants to go to work at, and enjoys
Now you are interrupted by a cicada rather than a train. Opie is quite opinionated and very expressive about it. We really could use more young people in the trades (plumbing, electrical, heating, etc.). Troy will find his path. Safe travels and God bless.
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 That is a useful profession Kurt. Some people go to college and major in something which is low on job prospects. They end up thousands in debt. I’m sure that you and Warden will steer him towards something rewarding. If he ends up driving a truck, that’s a useful career too.
A couple of things to go with this one Kurt. 1. My father didn't want me to be a truck driver over 30yrs ago. I went to college, now doing the IT career thing. And it's fine... the past 20yrs of it have been in support of transportation! It's hard to get too far away from it. I haven't given up on maybe driving one day as a final career move to scratch that itch.. 2. I learned to shift gears from driving in Australia (I got CDL e there, but didn't drive much, since I went to college). I'm left handed, so it was easy. Now I'm in USA, and shifting right handed is a bit of adjustment. But eventually it's just like falling off a bike! 😀 3. I was just like Troy a long time ago, and the time you're spending with him on the road, in the wilderness, and in family vacations are all things I experienced with my father. I love seeing you doing it all, as I know he'll keep those memories forever, as I have. Keep it all up man, you're the real deal!
Troy would do good to go into computer repair. I did that for many years. (before computers had a mouse lol) Computers are never going to go away and their is good money in it. Just a thought. He would get to play with a lot of cool computers, I did. lol
Did you see the windmill that got struck by lighting ? It was in Texas I think i seen it on 11 pm news tonight it was a killer strike to hit one of the moving blades and it made some wild smoke rings till it finally burnt the hole blades and power house don't no guess it probably fell to the ground when it was all done burning. Now as far as lilbud driving just let him do what he wants you and warden have shown him what driving is like and she has shown him some of what educational work is like and by the time he gets ready for collage I think he will no more as to what he wants out of life and who no s by then trucking may be so screwed and over regulated even more then now that he want be interested in it at all time will tell .But y'all stay safe and keep the video's coming
I know a few very successful people with degrees that went into trucking afterwards. If its in ya, its in ya. I also cuss like a sailor from time to time, but i also know when not to and how to be respectful and have some dignity. Around youngin’s, its a no-no. Same around the ladies and my elders. Some folks just dont care or have the sense to know when they are making themselves look like fools. Keep truckin, be safe and thanks for the video!
Like I was saying, I truly believe that that dog, and those kids, since the folks that have been following you for a while is the reason that you have maintained the followers that you have, and Kurt, you, and Troy, and Paige when she's with you, are always going to run into "characters" like that, because as much as you wish you could, you can't change the way the world is, and when Troy gets older, and he starts making decisions on his own, if he wants to follow in his dad's footsteps, you're going to have to let him, or he might just decide on his own to do it anyway, and you know I'm right about that, and as far as you letting him shift, let him stand up beside you, so he can shift with his right hand! That's what I did with my kids, and yes the girls too, but just make sure you keep an eye out for the "po-po" (cops/dot), as the youngsters say these days!...🙄😅 Anyway it's been raining ☔🌧⛈️ off-n-on pretty much all day today, and we're still under a flash flood "advisory" for most of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and it's not doing anything right now, but I don't think it's over yet, and chances are, mist of this might be headed up your way, so you guys stay safe, and take care!...😁😊👍
Some people get to chose their career path, and some, for various reasons, have it thrust upon them. That doesn't mean that you can't be just as proud of your achievements as anyone else. I've found that regardless what you do, the key to personal satisfaction is to do everything to the best of your ability.
It's better to go to college and then get a normal job between 7-16 and learn how to make money on the Stockmarket with your savings then it is to drive a truck.Nowadays you can not make much money driving truck in Sweden and I think it is the same in USA.
Kurt I know you would like your son to go college that is fine but after this covid hit people really realized how important truckers a honorable trade we can't live without you guys be safe out there!

the thing to tell him is to get a skilled trade , thats where the money is! and security as well , unions will pay for your schooling no mater what he chooses get into something that is not a job! but something he enjoys doing! a trade that he wants to go to work at, and enjoys
First class needs a wash and Guntren is sliiping on trailer washing also 🤣🤣🤣
Your will have a nice son if you teach him right an learn from you have you talk an how u treat a lady be safe out there you 3 love the dog
Now you are interrupted by a cicada rather than a train. Opie is quite opinionated and very expressive about it. We really could use more young people in the trades (plumbing, electrical, heating, etc.). Troy will find his path. Safe travels and God bless.
He's always talked about fish biology kinda stuff.
@@truckingwithschmidt7120 That is a useful profession Kurt. Some people go to college and major in something which is low on job prospects. They end up thousands in debt. I’m sure that you and Warden will steer him towards something rewarding. If he ends up driving a truck, that’s a useful career too.
Great video Kurt…like always
be safe guys 🙋♂️
Thank you for bring up about drivers cursing , there's couple truckers on you tube every other word cussing , you have safe trips and take care
2. I learned to shift gears from driving in Australia (I got CDL e
there, but didn't drive much, since I went to college).
Hello Mr Schmit. Is that a miniature lava lamp on top of your cb? Someday I would love to have a W9. Too bad the Caterpillars are out of the industry.
I completely understand wanting better for your children. But "better" for them really is to just be happy and enjoy the career choice that they make.
Troy would do good to go into computer repair. I did that for many years. (before computers had a mouse lol) Computers are never going to go away and their is good money in it. Just a thought. He would get to play with a lot of cool computers, I did. lol
I love your dog
That's what I did with my kids, and yes the girls too, but just make sure you keep an eye out for the "po-po" (cops/dot), as the youngsters say these days!...🙄😅
Anyway it's been raining ☔🌧⛈️ off-n-on pretty much all day today, and we're still under a flash flood "advisory" for most of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and it's not doing anything right now, but I don't think it's over yet, and chances are, mist of this might be headed up your way, so you guys stay safe, and take care!...😁😊👍
Your son well be a truck driver some day soon
What happen to the $5 footling commercial 🤣✝️🙏🏼💙🚛
That's be a good role model for all the kids that's coming of age that's crazy
Opie said..hey dad check dis out, lift the leg hahaha!! gottaove em,!!
Some people get to chose their career path, and some, for various reasons, have it thrust upon them. That doesn't mean that you can't be just as proud of your achievements as anyone else. I've found that regardless what you do, the key to personal satisfaction is to do everything to the best of your ability.
Buy it schmidt !! You need it 🤗
It's better to go to college and then get a normal job between 7-16 and learn how to make money on the Stockmarket with your savings then it is to drive a truck.Nowadays you can not make much money driving truck in Sweden and I think it is the same in USA.
