Thanks for letting me know about the Lectric battery. I drained it down for the winter and removed it sitting in the house so it doesn't get too cold in the garage.
👍. Keep it around 50-70% is unused.
Great reminder. I cannot wait for a little warmer weather in my area as well. Thanks Russ.
👍
Specific gravity changes as the weather changes ( a common occurrence)
My bike manufacturer told me the proper winterization method for battery life is to keep it fully charged at 100% and every couple of months top off the battery. The reason to keep the battery full is so the cells dont lose capacity. However, most experts online says to store it at partial charge so im at a loss as to what to do.
Well, I have always heard that fully charged lithium ion batteries that won’t be used for a while should be brought to the 50-70% level, so that is what I have always done.
@@vangfo What kind of bike, and especially what kind of battery do you have? That sounds like the proper storage procedure for a lead acid battery, like what cars use. Most PEVs use lithium ion batteries, which undergo the least stress in the mid-band of the charge, 30-70%.
Thanks for the reminder. I have two ebikes and right now the batteries are both on the bikes.
👍
Your battery: Check it before you Wreck it!
Seriously though, some bikes just have the controllers go into standby mode so they are ready to turn on, and that vampiric drain can pull the voltage down after several months. Props to Lectric for going into "off" mode after a while.
Even when it's off the bike, a lithium ion battery can self discharge because of chemical reactions within the cells, and those chemicals are more active when the voltage is above the "natural" level of 3.6 volts. Having the voltage lower than full (50 to 70%) reduces chemical activity, and minimizes self drain. It should be noted that batteries with higher quality chemicals will have fewer of these internal reactions, and therefore have a lower self drain rate.
I have 5 batteries for my 1 bike because I'll pick the lightest one for the job, or double them up when high power or range is needed. Some of them self drain more than others, but the better ones will only drop a percent after a couple months. I used to keep my batteries on the bike because I rode year round and the bike was stored indoors. We moved to a house where it's better to keep the bike in the garage, so I keep the batteries in the house when the weather gets cold.
👍
I usually remove the battery off the bike. A Trek e-bike technician suggested to apply electric grease to the electrical terminals on the bike and battery to prevent corrosion. Thanks for the video.
👍
I wouldn't keep my batteries at 100% over a long period of storage. That's how dendrites form and shorten the life of the battery. Winter storage should be done at 50%. I also bring them inside to keep them at a warmer temperature.
My Ego lawn appliances batteries will self discharge to 30% if you don't use them for a month or more to protect itself.
👍
I ride every month of the year, but don’t necessarily get to ride all of my devices as I ride less in the winter. I turn them all on at least once a month and look at the voltage. Keeping somewhere 50% +\- 20% is best, so if it’s dropped to 40% or less I’ll plug it in for an hour. Good to go for the rest of winter, most likely. My stuff does drain at something like 2-3% a month just running the BMS and background processes like that, so it’s worth turning them on the first of every month and taking a quick look.
👍
Most lithium ion batteries on Ebikes will self discharge at a very slow rate even while disconnected from the Ebike. The controller will always take some energy even while the Ebike is turned off. I take my batteries off the Ebike when in hibernation. Its good practice to always leave the battery with proper storage energy.
👍
Good video thanks !
🙂
Password protected/alarm equipped machines, my scooter does it more when alarm is stagnant and not set
👍
Good advice russ ..just picked up an lectric 3.0 and keeping it in the shed..I may bring the battery indoors for the rest of the winter what do you think?..or just leave it where it is ?
I remove the batteries on any bikes I leave in my garage. Too extreme temperatures out there.
Oh OK russ I'll bring the battery in ...thanks again I was wondering about that .
I remove both battery's from the bikes in winter i checked my wife's and my battery, one is tthe RAD 5 step thru her battery has a on-off switch (key) my battery doesn't have an on-off switch. Her battery i had charged to 80% and 3 months later it was still around 80% my battery on the other hand was at 80% but 3 months later it was down to 56% because it's always on no on-off switch .
👍
👍👍
🙂
I don't leave my battery on the bike. I accidentally left my battery on my trimmer charger without it plugged in it killed the battery. Both are lithium ion battery's.
👍
like your chicago area i m in the cleveland area and weather is not condusive to comfortable riding. heading into year 5 on my juiced commuter so lm looking to purchase an upgrade. interested in wired or ecells but negative reviews have scared me away from these brands. I kow its slower but i m leaning toward euphree step through. Im your age russ 5foot 5 any suggestion/ commuter cedence sensor thanks
The Euphree Stellar Falcon would be a good choice. Also, check out the Lectric One. It has an automatic transmission that will shift gears automatically for you. Many who have tried it really like it. It is a smaller sized bike making it easier to move around. Check my reviews on these bikes.
