Very nice and useful. Explained in a way that everybody can understand. Small tip: Cmd+Shift+< or > changes the size of a font down or up, respectively. And this is working in ID, PS, AI.

The pathfinder is a powerful little tool. It can make swiss cheese or even create a road map. And expanding a stroke is a cool thing too.

If u double click the text box from bottom it will will resize to fit the text. It's a quicker way compared to goin to menu and choosing fitting options

I know this is an old video. But the character and paragraph controls can still be on top if your control window is on. It should be on by default.
Once you place your text box and start typing, you'll see the control panel change with the left two buttons being character controls like fonts and size, and the other button is the paragraph controls.
The rectangle where not perfectly centered because when you draw a default rectangle there's a 1pt stroke around and in indesign when you inverse the color from the stroke and the filling it will fill the rectangle but only in the inside of the previous stroke and not replace it ! so when you do that the second rectangle will actually be smaller than the first one you drew!
i hate that so much! i use ID every day and this causes me pain every time i draw a shape.

I get why you moved the world so the A is in the centre. There is a difference between something being mathematically centred and something being visually centred.
Can this also be applied to a PNG file instead of Text? It only seems to work on Text.

Is there a easy way to do a similar option of this with a AI/Vector file that is an outline logo/text? I have a file that is a logo (the logo is just a word, but as a AI file not as text) and do the same thing? I cannot seem to do that.
when upping youro font size, old shift and the font size will increase in 10's
I have my text outlined, and left box and text selected. When I go to exclude the overlap it is greyed out. Any idea why?

first create outlines!
make sure the blue form and the text are not grouped also make sure you have clicked first on the text (and its thext which is being selected) and then with shift on the blue shape (and again make sure that the blue shape is being selected / and the 2 arent grouped) then do the exclude part i had the same thing happening to me for a good 5 min but thanfully i figgured it out

Hey guys, i'm trying to do the pathfinder option with a paragraph of text (i have converted to outlines) over a shape. Indesign doesn't let me click the extrude option or any of the other options. Does anyone know the reason for this? It works when I write a title or just a couple of words but not a 4-5 line paragraph.

I have a problem with the manipulation , each time that I am doing the PATHFINDER then the EXCLUDE OVERLAP, my word LEARN move to the up left of the doc and this side of the page is totally white.... Does anyone know what I am doing wrong, please?? I don't manage to find any answer on the net.

I downloaded an image from Unsplash, got to the part when you go file; place; then make sure the replace selected item, and there was no replace selected item check box. there was a replace check box but it was not able to select that box. anyone know why?
You didn't have anything selected at the time.
question: how come after I create outline for the text and hold shift click a box, the pathfinder doesnt show options? All greyed out.
i also tried another way where after i create outline, i ungroup the text and did the hold-shift click box, the pathfinder appears but after i select the exclude overlap, an error message: could not complete operation, pathfinder results describe empty region

what do you mean by banding ?
Convert the image to 16bits , make duplicate layer, apply gaussian blur or surface blur, add inverted layer mask, paint the banding out with a white brush on the layer mask, covert back to 8bits

Real question tho, can this be done in photoshop?
It's fairly easy in Photoshop. ---- Type your text > Right mouse click this text layer and click Rasterize Type> Create new layer atop the text layer> Place your image in that layer>Right mouse>click Create Clipping Mask.
Ofcourse, most things can be done in photoshop, but out and typography is usually if not better in indesign
And actually what you want to do, spexially with this kind of thing is, you do the whole illustration and imagery part of it in photoshop, and when you need to add text, indesign

You don't need to outline the text for this. Just hold "alt" when you click intersect in the pathfinder window. That way you can stay non-destructive. Huzzah.

Hmm. Not sure. Did you have more than two objects selected by chance? Are you sure you're clicking it from the pathfinder panel (not the pull-down menu, as shown in the video)
This is destructive; the parts of the text that are "see through" no longer exist. How do you cut a shape from another NON-DESTRUCTIVELY; i.e., wherever I move a rectangle over another object, it just clears or masks out the object that's underneath?
just out of curiosity ... why are you not using keyboard shortcuts for send to back, bring to front, create outlines etc? Great video though.
Hey Paul, I typically always use shortcuts. However for video tutorials, sometimes people watching can get lost with what just happening if it's too quick, so I like to show the original location in the menu, and then they can view the shortcut command for themselves :)
