Probably not economically viable with all the welding and paintwork (plus the likely other yet to be discovered issues), but always happy to see these saved rather than dismantled.
Mine's the same age (but not a spider) and i had over £700 worth of welding done to it earlier this year. My head said no, but my heart said yes. The 2.0 TS are great to drive and i love mine...sometimes i love it more than my GT Busso which is why i saved it. Glad the owner of this one gave the thumbs up to save it. Keep them going and keep these videos coming
To someone who is good at body work its a reasonable job. To someone who isnt it's an impossible job. I think Neil is very fair and good with his customers and its great to see it will survive. ☺️👏
I recently purchased a gtv ,it was only when I got it home and stripped the cill covers off and arch liners I saw the corrosion, I have since repaired the corrosion, changed the cam belt along with other parts replaced I am on my way to a working car , it’s not a cheap project but eventually I will see the benefits, and the same will apply here for this spyder .
Save. Engine sounds sweet and not rust certainly isn’t that bad and the rest of the shell looks sound/solid enough to be worth saving. Hopefully the owner has the budget.
By the time you welded it up. Added new paint. Replaced the roof it will be worth half the repair costs and still be rotting all the time. U can cut visible tin worm out but it will be ingrained underneath the whole car now like a ticking time bomb
It never ceases to amaze me, how the offside is almost always worse than the near side, despite the amount of puddles kerbside, in the UK. For someone with your skills it’s a few days work I can’t wait to see in follow up videos!
Beautiful looking car , very rare now in my opinion.. probably never been garaged in the last 30 years . Certainly with keeping provided the customer is willing to pay for the repairs…,
Save the rusty Alfas! Im in the States and in the 'rust belt' but i never realized how UK cars have rust issues. I just thought cars from the north in the US were prone to rust. Anyways enjoying your videos on the Alfa Romeo's!
Stylish Italian convertible. Convertibles age well in terms of looks. When I've spent money renovating older sports cars in the past (to keep), one has to take into account the cost of a newer replacement. I appreciate that dealers are capped by the 2nd hand market price and so have to take into account whether the repairs are viable.
Hello, greetings, nice unit, I wanted to ask if it could be... I have a spider 916 1.8ts from 1998, I have a question, every time I go to refuel, when I open the lid a lot of pressure comes out, I don't know if it is normal, but it's too much. I already bought the car like this. In other cars the pressure is little, but in this one it is too much. It is normal? I have been researching and it seems that there is a vapor separator above the tank, which has a diaphragm that is damaged. Thank you.
considering the age of the car, it is not a catastrophe and with a bit of work, this beauty will be worth a lot of money in years to come so save it !!
Yes, IMO it should be saved if the welding is possible at a reasonable cost. I do not know about the engine, gearbox etc so a wee doubt there! I heard that these are now beginning to rise in price?
With stuff like this it seems the difficulty is deciding just how far to go. If it were a car made in the 60s or 70s at 30 years old you'd probably be looking at chopping out the whole outer sill, inner sill and welding in complete new panels. More modern cars seem to have enough corrosion protection that such drastic surgery isn't needed quite as often. Would be interested to see how far you and the owner have decided to go and how it progresses.
From the video title I was expecting much worse - as other have mentioned, not economically viable if you were looking to make money on it, but well worth saving if it's for the love of the car.
Neil, howmuch would it cost to change the timingbelt and waterpump and steeringrack for a 156 1.8 from 2004 aprox? I can deliver the parts and drive it from the Netherlands to your shop so you have a left hand drive car once 😅
That's fairly decent for a car of that age but it depends on whether you could buy a better one for similar money (or something equivalent but newer) to the repair cost and how much the owner wants to keep it on the road.
Personally do the welding and make sure its roadworthy try make the best of the paintwork with a session with the mop to make it look tidier wouldn't respray it not worth it
A cold hearted, even rational, view is that it would be uneconomic to repair relative to the likely value of the car. Really depends on how much the owner loves it and wants it fixed up.
Drivers side worse? It was the passenger side on my GTV, thought I’d caught it all but seen a little bit of bubbling just in front of the rear wheel arch 😢
Those cars, if maintained well, will only increase in value. Now it's high time to do the welding, the expensive paintwork can then be done later if the money is an issue at the moment.
paintwork: No need for a respray there at all. Just proper, high quality buffing and polish. Undertray left hand side is not bad at all but holy mother on the right hand side. What have they done with it, left it in a puddle with salt water? Jesh. If you can find a better right hand side floorpan and side sill then sure, but no repair job and amount of welding can save that.
Im in the same boat my TS is on 156k needs a cam belt this year 2 tyres and maybe some welding paint peal from hell and a few other jobs love driving it but a younger one maybe a better Idea or somthing like a 156 as im 65 and getting in and out of the GTV is starting to become a struggle we will see in september when the MOT is due
Looks not to bad to be honest for a UK car. I have seen worse and better for sure. But a couple of grand for the underside of the car and your good to go. Engine sounded well.
I’m always shocked at the rust tolerance you brits have! As an Australian, I’d call that utterly fooked and be parting it out for sure!! No way that’s worth fixing…
I still can’t reconcile to myself that cars like this can have large amounts of structural steel cut out of them and then get welded and patched back together yet are still regarded as safe.
Lovely vehicle. Glad the owner has given the thumbs up
Half way through the repair now.
Probably not economically viable with all the welding and paintwork (plus the likely other yet to be discovered issues), but always happy to see these saved rather than dismantled.
I'd say save her anyway, but it depends on what the owner is willing to spend on her. Best of luck Neil.
Customer has given the 👍
@@ItaliaAutos So looking forward (hopefully?) to a mini-series of the restoration? Glad another one is saved.
That is a save car , I was pleasantly impressed by how little welding needs doing as a whole .
Mine's the same age (but not a spider) and i had over £700 worth of welding done to it earlier this year. My head said no, but my heart said yes. Absolutely brilliant video Neil ❤👍 definitely needs saving not that bad compared to some you have had brilliant
Cheers. Yeah I've fixed worse

Phase ones always deserve saving
Body looks saveable, Go for it.
worth saving 100%. paintwork could be wet sanded and lacquered at a push.
It should be saved, do not forget: nearly 30 years...
Got to be saved and will be a really nice solid car to drive and enjoy. There's nothing there a man of your talents can't handle
Those beauties can't be lost to rust.
Based on what we saw yes is my feeling. Stylish car.
By the time you welded it up. Added new paint. Replaced the roof it will be worth half the repair costs and still be rotting all the time. U can cut visible tin worm out but it will be ingrained underneath the whole car now like a ticking time bomb

Get after this one. It's worth saving😉
Once the rust is dealt with and paint freshened up, it will be a fabulous stylish car. Im sure you wont lose money on it.
Hope you can save this one.
Edit: definitely repair this one!
I'm sure 😁

I'm amazed at how good the under body is. It used to be that you were lucky if an Italian made car lasted 10 years.

can you make a video how to replace a small air conditioner cooler, for Gtv 916 ? 😊
Doesn't look too bad, and these early ones are getting thin on the ground now, so I'd say yes, definitely worth saving...

Looks not so bad. Of course, requiring some love and lot more time, but in general for a phase 1, in acceptable condition.
Definitely save it yes it needs money and tlc but it'll be gorgeous when done
From the video title I was expecting much worse - as other have mentioned, not economically viable if you were looking to make money on it, but well worth saving if it's for the love of the car.
Yeah definitely one to save for sure

Hi Neil that's not bad seen you do more on them
Depends on the mileage, and at the end of the day, its down money like most things in life.
I quite like the Matt paint tbh; get an mot and see where you are
Cure her arthritis (rust) - Give her a facelift (paint job and new hood) - and she's a beauty again! 😎😎
Drivers side worse? It was the passenger side on my GTV, thought I’d caught it all but seen a little bit of bubbling just in front of the rear wheel arch 😢

Thanks good video Neil
save it, they are now getting quite rare to find
I would say it is not too far gone and could be repaired. I guess the paintwork can't be polished up anymore.
paintwork: No need for a respray there at all. Just proper, high quality buffing and polish.

Tough decisions… is it worth saving? Yes, absolutely. You've done worse, I've done worse. It's a matter of time and labour. Do it!
Not bad at all

Not good.
no i have enjoyed it for 6 years but time to move on i think
A good 156 is a good caqr to get in and out. A GTV is a lot lower. So a cheap and good 156 could do the trick.
save it and show us how you do it - it would be very educational :-)
I’m guessing it’s 50 shades of red🤔🤣. Paint would cost more than the welding if the underneath is rotten.
Sure is
Every Spider V6 is worth saving. 8^)
Even the ts
How can one side be relatively clean and the other riddled with rust?
Most cars rust more on the nearside than the offside. Picking up salt and water from the lower road camber.
98 spider?. Must be one of the first Mk1s. 100% needs restoring. They must go up in value surely?
deffo a saver
Save it!
The car is in mostly original condition and should be saved and preserved
If the customer is emotionally attached to the car, he should have it repaired surely. It is a Busso I think ....
That’s a nail lol
And i thought mine was bad
Oh dear 😮
Doing some work on my GTV currently. I consider myself very lucky.
Looks not to bad to be honest for a UK car. I have seen worse and better for sure. But a couple of grand for the underside of the car and your good to go. Engine sounded well.
Saved 👍💯

Thankfully we have guys like Neil that know how to do a proper job.
def save🙏
Save it :)
£3k or more just for the welding?🤷♂️im guessing probably badly…..does the owner have the money 💰 ?
Nowhere near £3k welding on that.
welded far worse in my time.
i have seen worse on your chanel neil . i do miss my spider
Save it!
