    Not ugly but not one of the more unique pieces of wood art that you normally do. I understand about spending any more time on filling the crack. Most all turnings I do have cracks ( I have a lot of cherry ). Since I appreciate natural looks I never use epoxy or resin. A technique I have been using is crushing turquoise to a powder to fill cracks. I feel that the turquoise gives it an appealing accent and still has a nature kind of feeling to it. It has become sort of a trademark for me. Again thanks for an informative and inspirational video.

    I think you 'sold yourself a little short' on this bowl. When I first saw the piece of wood I mistakenly thought that was little good that could come out of it. MY MISTAKE because I had not allowed for the "Phil factor". This 'ugly' looking piece of Rhododendron blossomed into quite a pretty little bowl. The grain is quite nice & the natural edge traces an interesting path which is accentuated by the bark. Well done sir, Don.

    I like it and definitely don't think it's ugly even with the filled crack! Just call me Pollyanna because I prefer to focus on the good/positive rather than the negative. I only wish the fellow who sent the piece of rhodo had sent a picture of the whole shrub before it was cut up, must have been huge! I wonder if it still bloomed? ❤️👍

    • @DAsh-wi1zc
      @DAsh-wi1zc 5 років тому +1

      Oh, the picture! I do have one of the cut trunk, but sadly cannot upload here. 🙁 By rhody standards it was large-- close to 7" diameter --and likely 50+ years old. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been offered this wood by my neighbor. Yes, it was large and yes it still bloomed. They removed it to make room for a remodel and new landscaping. I had to send Phil a chunk to turn.

    • @robinrummel1359
      @robinrummel1359 5 років тому

      @@DAsh-wi1zc thank you for telling me about it. Knowing the history makes it even more interesting. There's one in front of my house that was probably planted soon after the house was built in 1978 but it's only about half the diameter at the base. If my bowl, I would see the history and beauty of the yearly blooms every time I looked at it. Thank you for sending it to Phil and I thank him for sharing the video of the turning. 👍❤️

    Not bad or ugly ...made out of wood , it can not be ugly .

Ye olde naturalel " ....I have fixed cracks filling them with saw dust and CA glue looks ok but takes time ....I also have fixed them with blue or red epoxy ...that is a different look completely .....that is what the client wanted .

    Hey buddy! With a view to cracks, I agree with you when using clear ca and sawdust, the lack of grain in the crack never looks right even though the colour is 'right' ... a lot of the wood on my farm that I turn has cracks, and I like to fill them with black ca, it contrasts with the piece, and instead of trying to hide the crack, I make a feature out of it haha, it also stops the crack from cracking further, at least for me it seems to work :) I did an unturnable piece of oak recently that was so badly cracked it would have blown apart, but 48 hours in epoxy at 75psi filled it solid as a rock, and it turned out as one of the prettiest bowls I've ever done, I'm gonna put the video up of this project this weekend you can let me know what you think of it :)
    There's nothing ugly about that bowl mate, nice little piece :)
    Hope you're well, all the best!
    Will

      You make a good point, Will. With this piece, I just wanted it to be over so didn't want to expend any more energy than necessary! I just didn't like the shape I had. I've used coffee grounds that looked much better than the sawdust thing. I just wanted to move past it, ya know?
      I'll definitely be checking our you new video, buddy!

    Thank you Phil for presenting wood turning and yourself warts n all, it's refreshing and a boost to us all to see we are not alone in this wonderful field. Have you ever turned old and dried out white cedar (Melia azedarah)? I've put the scientific name in to make sure we are talking about the right tree because there are so many white cedars out there. The wood is brittle, hard, and tears out fit to break your heart but when finished it repays all the work with a beautiful piece of natural art. I'm getting mine from a very old tree that has collapsed and been down for around 15 years. Rot and splitting are a part of it all so I'd be interested to hear of your experience with this timber. All the best from Down Under and thanks mate.

      I have not heard of white cedar, John. Most of ours is called red cedar, very soft but really weather resistant. Mostly used for fences, decks, outdoor furniture. I have turned a piece or two and it can have lovely grain.

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop The timber you mention is what we call Western red cedar, we also have Australian red cedar which is sometimes called red gold, very expensive and hard to find. It's soft and lovely to work for furniture. So straight away we have 3 cedars and each one different! Is there some way I can send you a photo of some of my work?

      The best way to share photos, John, is put them on a site like Google Photos or some other free place and then just post the link.

    Love this little piece and I turned a similar one from Cherry as my first ever live edge bowl. Can you post the name of the finish you used ...and a link. Thanks!!

      The finish is called Howard Feed & Wax. It's available many places and is inexpensive here in the USA. Here's a link:

    Hi Phil I understand what you are sating about the filled crack & yes I agree with you, you should not have filled it, but you know it may have caused you problems when making the bowl if you didn't or it may have looked horrid

    Phil,
    I have a question about Rhody’s and finding a piece that big. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest almost all of my life and I have never seen a Rhody large enough to supply a chunk like this one. Where do I find such wood?

      Howdy, Russ. Dave here at Calmwood Creations. I'm the guy who sent Phil this piece. My neighbors removed two 50+ year old rhodies and gave me the trunks. It can be amazing how large a blank can be made from a trunk which is less than 7" diameter.
      (i live in portland, currently. have seen a lot of sizeable rhody bushes around town. the difficulty comes trying to find someone willing to let you cut one down! 😁)

      D. Ash i live in Vancouver, wa... so we’re neighbors but the only place around here I’ve seen that large (maybe) is Bonneville Fish Hatchery. The driveway into the Hatchery has the largest anywheres. I guess i need to scrutinize their trunks. Thanks Dave

      You know, you may be able to help me! We're getting ready to move and I'm trying to downsize the amount of raw wood to relocate to wherever we land. If you are in need of local wood to turn, contact me at my gmail. calmwoodcreations @ gmail, etc. I'm close in, east side.

      Russ Dunn As a kid, we climbed and played in our native rhodys. They were quite old, at least 50 years old, probably older. Take a trip up to Brinnon on Hood Canal and visit the rhododendron farm there. They have rhodys over 25 ft tall, and quite substantial in girth. Rare to get one for turning, but they do exist in mature neighborhoods and also west of Puget Sound in places where they were not cut when the ground was logged.

      Don, I actually looked for it today. I had some help cleaning up my shop a few months ago. I thought I was thorough about where to put what, but that piece is missing! I'm sure it's somewhere on this property but I don't know where. I know it seems odd I could lose something so big. I feel bad about it but I will keep looking. I've even asked about it but of course, they didn't know one piece of wood from another.

    But wood, itself, is beautiful--even when plain. Plain, functional bowls still ornament a table.
    That's actually a rather cute, little bowl.
