God makes a seed, the seed grows, and becomes a tree. Over time a branch falls, turns ugly, and is good for the fire pit....but is that all? Nice bowl Rus, haven't seen you do alot of these. I loved it, natural flaws and cracks, all of it what once was near worthless, is now beautiful to look at, with a purpose. That's what God did for me. Beautiful Rus thank you for another video loved it ..Dan

Thanks Matt! Not as good as the super bowl, but it'll do.

Good idea to use the sanding pad as a jam chuck to finish the bottom!

There is beauty in every piece of work. It can sometimes be hard to find, but you found it in that piece.

For an ugly piece of wood, you made a beautiful looking bowl. Nice work

I didn’t see the type of finish you used on this piece. Nice work by the way.

Thank you! I used friction polish but if it would be used for food I would use something like walnut oil.

New to wood turning, so question: I thought keeping pith in the project could lead to cracking and movement? Pith is in both sides of this bowl (beautiful, by the way!) When is this acceptable and when is it not? I am building a stockpile of blanks for turning and cutting out the pith. But I have some small apple pieces I'd love to turn like this. Can you please explain? Much appreciated!

The best way to do that is to seal the ends of the branches and let them dry. The cracking is caused from moisture coming out of the wood to fast and the movement causes the cracks. When you seal the cut ends it slows down the moisture coming out (ie less movement less cracking). This piece in this video is over 4 years old. Once the wood is dry the chance of cracking is reduced. It's kind of long winded response but I hope I answered your question.
