Dedication to your podcast-show and your audience is: Rerouting UPS power to the absolute necessities, shutting down the rest of the business and then sitting over half an hour in the dark, live streaming / recording your show. And that ladies and gentlemen is why LMG are legends.
@@JackMott never sent more than 2 mails about any one topic, and only once needed to send 2. I expect with the volume of messages some get lost, and with 5 orders so far, totaling about 15 mails (thanks Finland, posti, and customs). If I ever reach 30 mails, and it'll be 2 lost mails - I still think it acceptable. 😂
@@Deroven I sent 2, first reply was a useless form letter that didn’t answer the question. Second email no reply. Now I resort to rightfully shaming them online and a credit card chargeback. Sad.
@@joesterling4299 Confirmed. When I checked not more than 24 hours after this show was posted, NoKi did the timestamps. Bot's operational, we good. UPS is a helluvating
Let me just say that WanShow AfterDark with this mood lightning is absolutely amazing and should be (in my humble opinion) be kept. I find it much more visually pleasing than the full lights on.
Agreed i don't get how it hasn't been a thing anyway, wan show has always had that kinda 'late night after work tech chat' vibe and the lights just aid that
It made my year at 43:15 when Linus went to click his swear button on his stream deck which seemingly also lost power allowing me to hear Linus drop an f-bomb without any censoring for the first time in years 😂 thanks Linus
LTT After Dark: - Fs got bombed - Ads were ... noticed - Power was ... a thing? - LMG proving their absolute prowess. Best WAN show, ever, ever. It ruled.
I want a "WAN after dark" sponsored by Jackery where you just turn off all the power and run entirely off the Jackery's and you keep going till you run out of power
Hey I am super impressed that you guys were able to stitches together this vod but can you guys talk about the Microsoft response again next Wan show. It was either lost or you guys forgot to bring it back up after the power situation was addressed. I really want to know what Microsoft's response was because of how huge of an issue standby mode is.
Linus's swear, Luke's reaction, then just subtly telling him "my steam deck doesn't work so I can't swear, the power's out'" and then Linus's like twelve or thirteen seconds of his face falling, and then just the quietest "oh" while Luke is still talking is just priceless
And to be fair, I watched it live, I watched it again in the UA-cam cut, and I still had to replay it a third time and pause to figure out what the hell was NSFW on the webpage 😂 I might have Linus's problem, I don't see ads very well.
1:35:14 Absolutely agree with that. Also, after cancelling the subscription your card details are still saved and it's extremely easy to accidentally sign up for Prime again. If you place an order without Prime, you get a screen offering you to rejoin Amazon prime. The rejoin button is bright, big and visible, making it look like the right button to press
The number of places on Amazon where a button is clearly styled to be something it isn't (return to cart being the same style as place order) is infuriating. Same goes for the no rush credits, content that was being paid for by those was literally indistinguishable from an item that's on sale, both just used the strikethrough price with no notes or disclaimers. At least now it says "credits may be applied" in tiny text below the still obviously misleading styling...
Really hope they can cover the Microsoft/sleep topic again on a future video or show since the footage was lost here. that was the headline topic and really what I was excited for.
Same, I generally have the wan show in the background when I am doing something else, but this time I specifically clicked and was paying full attention just to watch that topic
I hope so too, I wasn't sure if I missed it or they just didn't finish the topic due to being distracted by power issues. Which is a fair reason to get distracted and forget but I want to know.
They resumed the discussion, we could see it when it was live on Floatplane, but they were having trouble resuming the UA-cam livestream due to the hard disconnect messing up their status windows or such. Maybe it will be all there in a future LMG Clips
@@anthony7564 ah, man I wish I hadn't been working so I could have caught it live in FP like usual. I was watching the VOD day after because I was at work yesterday.
@@anthony7564 Thank you for clearing that up. I will look forward to seeing them. I think it was amazing it was as live as it was with everything going on. Major props to the team. Keep up the awesome work.
Damn, that power outage made the atmosphere in the studio look like mid to late 90's sci-fi/spy movie. Looks hella cool. You guys should do that more often! Edit: holy fuckballs, thanks a lot for all of the likes! Happy holidays!
I really hope they will continue the storey about Microsoft and the sleep stages next week. Unfortunate that THAT footage was lost. However huge respect for the way they continued the show!
hearing that one glorious fbomb actually took me by surprise, then caused me to get irrationally hyped. Honestly this has been one of my favorite streams ever. With the exception of dropping microsoft's response to the sleep states thing. Linus or Luke, any plans on rehashing that content since it is missing from the stream video? Please please please lol. Thank you for being some of the greatest tech hosts. Truly legends.
@@chasing_the_horizon yep that putin rain is a bitch - but seriously I hope you are all safe and that this war is ended soon, I`m in the UK and believe that nato should be involved and should have been from the start.
This entire WAN was pretty lit, ngl. The scramble to keep the show going, the unexpected hero Jackery, the unintentionally uncensored fbomb, the nudity. Easily my favorite WAN show in years. What a ride!
Thank you for posting the full VOD of this show in particular. I had trouble following the day of and it's definitely one of your better shows with all the challenges. You're getting me through a workday (the Friday before New Years) that's very much a slog.
Just listened to the FP "lost" footage. Microsoft doesn't know why the sleep issues are happening, but they did two things. 1. LTT now has a direct feedback line to Microsoft for when the sleep issues occur. 2. On the LTT forums there is a post by Alex outlining the process we all can follow to submit feedback when we have sleep issues with our laptops.
Thankyou, I was so mad that the footage of them actually covering this was lost and I seemingly couldn't find any answers on what Microsoft actually said.
@@Oaisus Probably cause they rushed fixing and uploading the vods without checking all of their options. At this point it would cause more harm to their channel to fix than it would to leave it as is. I am sure they will have a better emergency power/network outage solution going forward.
@Austin Allman it would not cause any harm to them, if they really want this Information out there then they can upload it! The only thing hindering them from it is that they want to make the most money possible nowadays which I find really sad because I still love their show, but have the feeling linus becomes more and more like the corporate people he used to hate so passionately and with which I have to deal on a daily basis on my job. Leading a company can get to your head if you have no one strongly opposing questionable behavior makes you believe everything you do is amazing any your solution is much better then everybody else's. That's why some managers and ceos want to look into everything and correct at least one thing to feel they made it so much better with their touch.. I love linus and the show, but I'm kinda sad and a little bit disappointed by the onscreen behavior of the last year..
I just want to say, I have mad props for Linus right here after the power went out, he was on top of that like within seconds, he knew where to go and he knew what to pull from, this dude knows his stuff and he knows his facility well enough to know what to do. That's why I come back to you pretty much every other day if not every day to watch your videos, because I know you know your stuff, and it shows.
I remember the 23rd. I had to drive home from work that day. The blizzard was the worst I've ever experienced and my big work van went literally sideways a few times from ice and wind. Crazy how you guys kept this stream going
1:35:10 100% correct Luke. If I could describe what it feels like, it feels like when a company (Google for example) changes their marketing and CSS/JS styling over time but doesn't update their older pages to support that or make sure it doesn't break it. I think Samsung will keep the pages up, but will remove all links to them. So you can still get to them with the URI. That's what these unsubscribe pages feel like. It's baffling to go from a modern UI to the UI of a random job listing from 7 years ago. Another example of a dark pattern: Halo 5 was updated with lootbox bundles where the more you spend the more you save. Except instead of putting a quantity drop down by whatever box you wanted to buy they added each bundle to the Store menu IN FRONT OF EVERYTHING ELSE. Since Halo 5's UI was apparently bought off by Big Horizontal, the boxes for the bundles are so big the ones you can get with in game currency are off-screen. Also, Halo 5 lets you get more in-game currency by selling unwanted items. Except you have to sell the items one at a time, and the animation for selling an item is really long since it has to write this back to the server every time. I've spent literally 10 minutes mashing A to sell items when I have like 99 Carbines I need to get through. They added the ability to sell items through their official site (Halo Waypoint), except it's ALSO only one at a time!!!!!! I think someone made a chrome extension that lets you mass sell items (I assume by queuing up 50+ sell requests for your account and sending them to the backend lol). I assume they made selling inconvenient to encourage buying packs. Then again, this company also broke caching the main menu backgrounds in Infinite so it had to be downloaded every time you entered and exited the armory.....
Thanks for stitching this all together! I was only able to see the first part and later part before, kinda interesting to see the part where the power actually went out
I'm sad I missed the live show, I really wanted to know the full story of windows modern standby. Hopefully they find the footage or upload a follow up with it
Would Luke and Linus be interested in publishing another video discussing -- again -- the Microsoft thing? Almost all of the discussion basically didn't happen for me on VOD because of the power outage and footage lost. It was the part of the show I was most interested in, and I'm really looking forward to learning what is going to happen with modern standby.
What a wonderful thing the wan show is, no matter the rails it is put upon you guys always found the way to go off of them. Thanks for this gem of a show.
@@charmio They actually got a separate video for it. One of the takeaways is that it appears that letting the laptop sleep while it's plugged in and then unplugging it leads to the issue. In other words, only unplugging it while it's fully powered on may prevent the issue. ua-cam.com/video/OHKKcd3sx2c/v-deo.html
Glad caught this live and glad I watched the vod. Both have footage the other didn’t. Live cut out as soon as the lights went out and vod is missing a significant chunk of the windows modern standby story after they got the live stream back up. Also I am LEGITIMATELY surprised they don’t record an offline copy for this EXACT scenario. It is the exact reason OBS has the feature to begin with.
@@xMdb Doesn't sound like it's UPS then if it was interrupted by a power cut. That's the entire point of having UPS, so that it DOESN'T die in the event of power loss. I think it's more likely that the missing footage was removed because it was not monetisable.
@@rakaboi Don't quote me on this as this is the next day and purely off of my terrible memory... Microsoft was able to match the results of LTT and DID determine that it was ONE OF the things leading to battery drain during sleep however it wasn't the only cause. They mentioned that this is an extremely difficult problem for Microsoft to track down since trying to observe what is happening changes the actual results (I assume since more systems need to be running in sleep to get the relevant information) They also mentioned that LTT now has a direct line to report any more of their findings to Microsoft however for everyone else they detailed how we can send in a report which I believe that info is also available on their forum???? (The info is available somewhere at least) They also finished the tangent Linus was on about the micron tour saying how in order to make videos to the level of detail they do Linus NEEDS his laptop to have battery so he can take notes and that without it there is no way he will be able to retain all the information needed to make a good video. I forget all the questions Alex asked but these are the main highlights. If anyone sees something I missed please let me know.
@@xMdb It sounded like they were pulling the video off of floatplane. As for the offline copy being interrupted it shouldn't be an issue so long as they are recording to a format that is interruptible like mkv. OBS also just recently introduced the ability to split the recording into chunks on a timed interval so even IF a section of the video gets corrupted you can piece together everything else. Also OBS supports starting and stopping recordings mid stream though for stopping I think it requires it to be configured ahead of time to not stop the stream (which wouldn't have mattered for this scenario anyway)
Love the show but dam it to hell the ONE topic that I wanted answers to gets lost due to technical difficulties. Please do a recap video on the Sleep dysfunctionality and what the VP from Microsoft had to say. PLEASE!!!!
No, no, no….. this is the lost 14 or so minutes of the show: ua-cam.com/video/hh-OEU8Djk4/v-deo.html I promise, I really am not a bot. Just a guy with info. :)
@@donffrank Yeah, that’s why I replied with the link in my comment. That has most of the show that’s missing except for about one minute that was lost completely due to them switching UPSes.
Linus - "Release the server-side code" This is SUCH A HUGE THING! Harp on this more! It's a win/win. Releasing the game with private server support (Ark, Rust, Conan) is the way it should be for all Online games of this nature. Companies don't have to support a "money sink" and the players can support a game for a lifetime.
I've recently gotten into the best job of my life (good enough to very comfortably support my family of three with my job alone) and I look forward to supporting your business endeavors more than I have in the past. I've only bought one water bottle so far due to hard times since I first started watching during the beginning of the pandemic when I first became interested in PC's, but I'm very interested in your current and upcoming tools, the backpack, some of your clothing (more of a Carhartt/Adidas kind of guy) and many more water bottles. I don't always agree with you, but I love your content and your products! Keep on being awesome!
1:36:30 That's really crazy to me bc that means that that must be different in the EU bc here you simply have to go to your account page -> Prime -> Prime Membership -> End Prime Membership and benifits. I think there is some EU legislation about easy canceling of online subscriptions so that must be the reason but that's actually insane
I’m honestly so sorry to only just now learn here of Tyler’s passing, that’s extremely sad and is just another reminder once again how closely this pandemic has effected those around us while many sadly dismiss it.
Rip this WAN show :/ no audio and footage was lost Update: Audio back, footage still lost, probably not going to be recoverable in a reasonable amount of time / at all
I had no idea the "sleep" computer issue was present so universally, but that really really sux. Imagine if that happened with mobile-phones, they woke-up and unlocked randomly. And no I refuse to shut-down because it's boring to open-everything-up-and-set-it-up every time when you have apps and folders and files that you are working on. It's so nice to put it to sleep with everything still available the second day after you slept as you left it. I mean it's like browser tabs automatically reopening when you reopen your broswer! The people that recommend you shut down instead of sleep, would they give up browser-tabs restoring when re-opening your browser? No, they like it that way. Imagine you had to turn off your phone at night and then manually start-up your apps every morning, but on PC there's also files and folders.
Thing is, I actually do both of those. I close all of the apps on my phone when I'm not using them. I don't have browser tab restore (if I want to revisit a page, that's what bookmarks/history is for). Even still, shut down as an alternative to sleep is not viable because of the extra time it takes for everything to restart.
You guys running to shut anything else down and route power from other UPS to keep WAN show running is amazing! This show is part of LTT. Often late, but you guys are dedicated to make it happen every Friday, no matter what. That deserves respect 👌 Btw was that because of the storm freezing the whole US (except Florida apparently) right now? Edit: Ok Jake saved the whole WAN show with his 5 Jackerys. Thanks Jake! You saved your boyfriends important livestream 👌
I saw the lost footage part at 12:26 live on Floatplane, Linus finished his discussion about sleep states on Windows etc, it was an interesting discussion and it's unfortunate it was lost. EDIT: Actually they lied, the footage is all still there on the Floatplane archive
I agree that sleep/hibernate have been more than semi-problematic for decades, which is why I haven't used them for years. I turn off hibernate and sleep for family members that are terrible at tech because it offers no real upside, except getting back on takes 20 seconds extra. Saves me a lot of headaches.
@oled 4k bluray guy: The Gentlemen is an amazing showcase of oled performance + 4k bluray quality + whatever cameras they used. There are super-low-light scenes all over the show, and there's basically NO NOISE. No grain. No noise. No static. And it's not an issue of CGI making clean plates either, it's all just... Beautiful.
Linus and the team keeping the show going with Jackery. Luke's GF buying Vessi not know she could have probably gotten them from Luke lol. Just shows the actual usefulness of the sponsors LTT works with and the careful choices Linus and his company (I'm lookin at you too Yvonne) make to really be the best they can be for their fans and customers.
It's really amazing to see someone like Linus impacting gigantic corporations in positive ways. It's really easy to get in a corporate rut and not see the forest through the trees. I am thankful for independence like this. Dependence is such a burden and de-humanizing.
"S3 Sleep" Is commonly referred to as *S3 Suspend*. A classic Linux issue on Desktops and Laptops is you send the computer to suspend and it'll never come back.
Funny things about modern standby issue - we've been filling MS user voice with complaints for years and they didn't ever answer or aknowlage the problem. Glad they finally heard us
Dbrand is my favourite sponsor, because of the fact that you can tell them to f off and they will still give you money to do something stupid. Their shenanigans are always worth the laugh
I love how the initial topic was completely thrown into the void after the black out lol but you guys kept the show going and did an awesome job. I'm still curious about how the initial story was supposed to end.
Hey Luke or Linus search for a comment thread from "Nick Goulding" (first part of comment is "Hey I am super impressed that you guys were able to stitches together this vod"). It's a bunch of people wondering about the unfinished topic of microsoft standby.
As someone watching after the fact, the first hour and half are a ROLLERCOASTER of wondering whats going to happen next, and looking at the timestamp comment ahead made me real excited for it. Hope everyone stays safe through these storms. Happy Holidays!
@@Thermedge there is no lost footage section, ltt took down both streams so they could use their own capture for the wan show meaning we got it all. The moment the lights go out is when the stream cut and when linus gets back they talk about meta for a minute before the stream came back.
@@bunch1 just gone back through to find the timestamp and it's not there anymore. When I watched it, shortly after the power went out there was a black screen saying the footage had been lost.
33:50 this one is rough. I used to love using Gamestream, somewhat because it was really good, but also because the open-source Moonlight client opened doors for game streaming that was otherwise impossible. Hopefully Sunshine picks up where Gamestream left off
@@Crazymindplow that sounds promising then. Two reasons why I preferred Nvidia cards, outside of performance, is moonlight, and shadowplay. Maybe the playing field is finally leveled now
Bitwarden is completely open source and has a pretty good track record, while being very similar to LastPass. Also, it's free or VERY cheap. Can recommend it if you don't want the hassle of setting up KeePass and finding a way to sync the vault.
2:12:40 this is why i love ltt, linus is not only intellectual, but has one of the best moral codes of anyone I've ever seen. The content being relevant to me is only just a bonus
I was looking up to his morals until he did the shit tour of intel Isreal 😀, I am Palestinian who has known multiple ppl killed from this occupation and he just doesn't care. U will tell me he don't engage in politics but look at his stance on Ukraine and Russia, that's called double standards and hypocrisy imagine if he had been invited to the tour in Russia instead of Isreal he will deny it amd talk about that proudly but since it's not something his main stream audience doesn't care about then fuck it, it's not morals it's how he can have the best decisions for long term since being a shell for the companies won't be successful in the long term it may bring more money but it will eventually drive away consumers.
I've had that too. But it doesn't really bother me. I have my laptop. When it's low on battery, I have my smartphone. When that's low on battery I have my books I still haven't read. So I'm fine with a few hours without electricity. My main issue is the freezer. I don't have an UPS for it.
earlier this week had the power pout in 10 f/-12 c. ;luckily our pud estimate of like 6 hours(middle of night) was a few hours off. that's what I get for living just east of the cascades, lots of snow and cold unlike seattle
That's why you need at minimum, a decent UPS (Uninteruptable power supply) that normally consists on a 12v battery and an inverter to take the voltage up to your Mains voltage requirements. Benefit of a UPS is it can keep your Router/Modem live and maybe a few other essentials like security cameras running during a power outage. I use a ups for my server room for the necessities and as the middle man between mains and my natural gas generator. There is a gap before the generator turns on. The ups covers that gap allowing a seamless transition to backup generator. That's why any good server has a 99.99% uptime.
In today's world, some sort of backup power is necessary. You can buy something like a jackery to run small appliances for a few hours, or you can get a generator for relatively cheap. If you live someplace cold and have a gas furnace, there are mods you can do to run you furnace blower off the jackery and get heat for a few hours.
A part of me wants dbrand to redecorate a whole room in Linus's new house, can only imagine the chaos...

@@phytonso9877 you're a legand

The hell? If it's on floatplane how is it lost?
@@Oaisus Probably cause they rushed fixing and uploading the vods without checking all of their options. At this point it would cause more harm to their channel to fix than it would to leave it as is. I am sure they will have a better emergency power/network outage solution going forward.
Microsoft cant test 3 days into the suture. Their entire product offerings are poorly thought out and rarely sensible.
Trust me, the selling animation is not long for any real technical reason. Those calls take milliseconds. It is purely to make it too tedious to use.
Really like to know what happened with the Microsoft sleep situation, hope a Video is coming on it or maybe something recovering it next WAN show

They might have an offline copy but the UPS the computer was on might have had to turn off for a second to change UPSes

@@rakaboi Don't quote me on this as this is the next day and purely off of my terrible memory...
Microsoft was able to match the results of LTT and DID determine that it was ONE OF the things leading to battery drain during sleep however it wasn't the only cause.
They mentioned that this is an extremely difficult problem for Microsoft to track down since trying to observe what is happening changes the actual results (I assume since more systems need to be running in sleep to get the relevant information)
They also mentioned that LTT now has a direct line to report any more of their findings to Microsoft however for everyone else they detailed how we can send in a report which I believe that info is also available on their forum???? (The info is available somewhere at least)
They also finished the tangent Linus was on about the micron tour saying how in order to make videos to the level of detail they do Linus NEEDS his laptop to have battery so he can take notes and that without it there is no way he will be able to retain all the information needed to make a good video.

Even still, shut down as an alternative to sleep is not viable because of the extra time it takes for everything to restart.

honestly kinda love the look that the minimal lighting gives
Linus and the team keeping the show going with Jackery. Luke's GF buying Vessi not know she could have probably gotten them from Luke lol. Just shows the actual usefulness of the sponsors LTT works with and the careful choices Linus and his company (I'm lookin at you too Yvonne) make to really be the best they can be for their fans and customers.
Eaton UPS was a LTT sponsor and is what they use for the servers… Jackery only have portable power banks…
@@AaronShenghao for cameras and pc's probably jackery like he said
Kind of a weird thing to say, but then again I am on the LTT channel and its fans are not really the most independent thinkers out there
Except for an those times they try to advertise total garbage
It just means ads are doing their job, they bought advertised thing.
Watching Luke entertain the crowds is absolute gold. Best Wan show ever
Me: asks for a ltt screwdriver for Christmas
The wait time:
It's really amazing to see someone like Linus impacting gigantic corporations in positive ways. It's really easy to get in a corporate rut and not see the forest through the trees. I am thankful for independence like this. Dependence is such a burden and de-humanizing.
I'm so happy the panels behind them are finally smooth and have no wrinkles! Well done to whoever took care of that. Annoyed me to no end.
I would like to advocate for a Late Night with Luke podcast. Just Luke, in a dark room, talking. I'd listen to that for hours.
"S3 Sleep" Is commonly referred to as *S3 Suspend*. A classic Linux issue on Desktops and Laptops is you send the computer to suspend and it'll never come back.
Had that on windows more than Linux surprisingly
@@ThompYT I haven't used Windows since 7, Thanks for the insight
Funny things about modern standby issue - we've been filling MS user voice with complaints for years and they didn't ever answer or aknowlage the problem. Glad they finally heard us
You know what can prevent inappropriate ads from almost ruining the stream? ADBLOCK 😂
Honestly the nightime wan looks so cool
Just when I thought we weren’t getting a WAN show this week!! Merry Christmas! 🙂
Watching this on Christmas Eve. Linus and Luke in the dark make me feel like we're staying up late waiting for Santa and talking about tech news.
Merry Christmas!! Love you guys!
Dbrand is my favourite sponsor, because of the fact that you can tell them to f off and they will still give you money to do something stupid. Their shenanigans are always worth the laugh
Luke: Shows a lot of resentment towards AI image generation.
Also Luke: Shows a lot of excitement towards AI text generation. :D
Coding isn't artistic in the same way drawing a picture is
@@LiamNajor Who said anything about coding, mate. :) What about all the authors of books and articles?
I hope you guys can make Microsoft fix things like sleep and such, awesome work! Keep it up!
I love how the initial topic was completely thrown into the void after the black out lol but you guys kept the show going and did an awesome job. I'm still curious about how the initial story was supposed to end.
Thank you Luke for mentioning Supreme Commander Forged alliance forever. It is a great game that only needs one thing and it is more players.
This was the most entertaining wan show of all time
ALL wan shows are the most entertaining wan show of all time :)
That's why we love watching this so much!
Better then that wan show, where Brandon passd out behind the camera?
Okay be we need a new video on the Windows topic. It's vital information.
Wooowww :o really dig the dark lighting! This makes it the perfect watch-to-sleep stream!
Linus: "Well, here's the thing..."
(Power goes out)
The power pulled a Linus.
I feel like they forgot to talk about the title topic cause of power failure, but I still want to hear it.
next wan show hopefully
Apparently they covered it in the lost footage section.
When I watched it, shortly after the power went out there was a black screen saying the footage had been lost.
we should get a Wan Show Dark edition every month.
Quarterly
33:50 this one is rough. I used to love using Gamestream, somewhat because it was really good, but also because the open-source Moonlight client opened doors for game streaming that was otherwise impossible. Hopefully Sunshine picks up where Gamestream left off
I’m using sunshine rn. It’s a bit of a headache to set up, but I think in streaming it’s actually better!
10:08 as someone who reacently lost power, i know the feeling. at least you had UPS to transition, we had nothing, and completely were in the dark
Here in South Africa we lose power due to power cuts for 4 - 14 hours every day. I understand what you all face haha
I'm watching an emergency battery operated WAN Show on emergency battery power.
