  • There are several songs about Casey Jones, the famous railway man of the Illinois Central. The songs are based on the train wreck of April 1900 at Vaughan, Mississippi. Jones was a well-known and respected driver. He was driving No. 382, possibly for a sick friend. The switching station at Vaughan did not have enough room to accommodate the length of the trains there. Flagmen were sent to warn Jones, but for unknown reasons, he was unaware of the problem until it was too late. Jones was killed in the accident. He left a wife and three children.
The first Casey Jones ballad was written by Wallace Saunders, Casey's African-American engine wiper. It was sung to the tune Jimmy Jones, which was popular at the time. Engineer William Leighton heard the song. His brothers Frank and Bert, vaudeville performers, polished the song, added a chorus, and began to perform it in their act. When the ballad was published in 1902 the words were credited to T. Lawrence Seibert, and Eddie Newton was credited with the music. This is QRS roll #1227 played by J. Lawrence Cook

If you search UA-cam for; ... "Casey Jones - Billy Murray & American Quartet," .. you'll hear it. It is an old 78 record from 1910, according to info provided, it sold 2 million discs, (Records). The actual words on the 78 record say , ...another Pappy on the Salt Lake Line."

The verse at the end on some vidoes that claim his wife said to the thier children, "now don't you cry because you have another Daddy on the Salt Lake Line," was incorrect, his wife was very devoted to him & never remarried after his death. She was hurt by the last verse & asked that it not be sung.

Thanks for the comment. Just as in media reports, not all words in a song verse are a reflection of what really is true. Thanks for commenting and I hope you enjoyed the music.

Great song, interesting information too. The only thing I knew about Casey Jones was that Alan Hale Jr played him in an old TV series. Excellent post.
