I'm from California, but have lived the last 20 years on the west side of Oahu, Hawaii, and I am seriously thinking about relocating my family and me to eastern Nebraska (Papillion and Gretna seem nice). Being stuck on a rock and hanging out at the beach is whimsical for about a month or so. But after that, the ridiculously high cost of everything, the heat, and the constant flow of tourists wear on you. I had an aunt and uncle who lived not so far from you in a small farming town called Madison, Minnesota. I visited for a week about 40 years ago when I was 11, and I loved it. It was just a vibe, a good vibe, that I couldn't put my finger, but one that I find myself seeking again at the age of 53. I think that the whole area has a missing piece to make the puzzle whole and that I would like to find.

After 42 years the best thing I can say about Omaha is that is has suffered through a decades long identity crisis. It’s like it wants to be a big, attractive city... but it also wants to be the best place to raise a family... and it can’t come to grips with the fact those things aren’t mutually exclusive. The citizens can’t seem to accept that “family” and “culture” can exist in the same city.
Its location and layout don’t satisfy outdoor enthusiasts. Omaha doesn’t do or build or keep or maintain any of the things that would make it a big attractive city... like theme parks or large companies or sports teams. It passes much of its tax breaks to out of state developers and then allows the same developers to tax its developments... a double whammy on the working class.
Omaha will spend disproportionate amounts of energy to punish recreational marijuana use, or prevent a strip club from opening. At the same time it won’t lift a finger to correct the decades long dilapidation of 72nd and Dodge until it’s forced to accept the terms of a ruthless developer. It’s fantastically stupid.

Granted Omaha might have high property tax, but you should see the housing prices in the state of Oregon where I currently live. And we won't even start talking about the income tax. It might not be as buzzing as some other cities, but for someone who wants to lead a quite life with family it can be a good option. The job opportunities are plenty for IT and Non-IT with good pay scales. There are quite a few good restaurants for food lovers and traffic is very minimum. The weather can be harsh at times because of dropping temperatures.

I'm from the island of Oahu and attended Punahou high school(the same school that President Obama attended and won state basketball championship at). My father met my native hawaiian mother when he joined the airforce. He's been a jet pilot for 32 years on Oahu. When I was 9 years old, he took me to Nebraska because he was doing some airforce exercises. We visited North 24th street all the way back up to the downtown area of Omaha. I'm now living on the East Coast and the difference in education and wealth, among blacks here in Virginia, is literally superior to that of Omaha !! Come to find out, blacks are the wealthiest and most educated in the United States within the Maryland, Washington D.C and Virginia tri-state area due to not only historical reason but also to the very large percentage of blacks that live in these areas...

I moved here 10yrs ago from the Left Coast (SoCal). Nice folks, polite traffic (Everyone was doing the speed limit... 10yrs ago, not now though).
It took me 1 1/2 yrs to figure out where I was, whenever I went out. I'm used to Sun, & Mountains for guidance. Sun is not represented much.
My immediate faves were; • Unique Coffee houses & Bars. In SoCal uniqueness in both is a rarity. I like the Weather; Coming from SoCal, that was the most boring part of day to day. When it snows, I gleefully go out and shovel, cuz I love to ski, and in my mind, that makes me think I'll be doing some skiing soon. 5150 in Calif law code, also name of 1986 Van Halen album. • Cost of living is better than many other areas. Way better than either coast.
Not faves; • Driving at night in wet or snowy weather. Forget staying in a lane, where's the f'ing road??? I do greatly miss Raised Lane Reflectors. Are extremely useful, but I understand how they're not easily managed here. However I have seen a small amount out west of O in the country. Road signs do not seem to be well placed. • Driving to Des Moines puts me to sleep.

I relocated here from Boston MA about 4 years ago after finishing time in the Air Force, and I gotta say...I think I'm way overdue for a change of scenery. I don't disagree that it is probably one of the most peaceful places to raise a family. I personally would recommend against any young professionals moving here alone as I feel Omaha is more for families. As far as people being on the nicer side, I can agree also. Coming from the East Coast, people in the Midwest have been relatively nicer on a more surface level I feel compared to people I've met in the South that invite you to their home shortly after meeting you (pandemic aside this is just my experience).
The food scene is rather comical with mainly chain restaurants you can find anywhere, and as far as things to do, I can find not a whole lot after have been to the Zoo enough times throughout the years. I guess I can't find much since I couldn't care less about college sports.
Did my 4 years at UNO and felt as I probably would have had a completely more positive experience if I had gone in as a traditional student rather than a Veteran slightly older than many in my classes. Tried to volunteer and participate in as many programs as I could find while in school.
Anyway sorry for the mini-rant, great video! I was just talking from the heart as someone who has been told many times "it is what you make of it" and tried to love living here in Omaha but only to find myself increasing in depression like never before in my life.

I have been thinking about moving to Ashville NC or Charleston SC yet I keep reading how touristy and competitive those places are... I do want to make friends beyond superficial politeness.. I feel people are addicted to their phones and have lost social skills - I am speaking from living in Portland Oregon in the early 2000s until 2012 and then Montana.. Folks don't know how to connect and I am talking about people in their 50s and 60s that are also always on their phones. I think a lot of people are on prescription meds or on recreational drugs so folks are out of it.. and the social engineering dividing everybody makes it a challenge to get established in a new place. Then you hit on the worst about Nebraska and NAILED it! No theme parks and no professional sports teams; plus, limited night life. I grew up in California and while I miss the beach and the endless number of times spent there with friends, my sons and daughters, and just by myself (I really love the beach) I can live without it so I don't have to deal with everything else that goes with it in California. I don't care at all about night life. I could care less about professional sports, and I was way done with theme parks years ago. New England gets so hyped for its history, education, sports teams, and beaches, but honestly it's overhyped and over expensive. Massachusetts is more expensive than California is, that's saying something. Plus I'd argue the winters in New England are worse than the midwest because we get way more snow, but you guys have colder temperatures. I think I'd take colder temps with wind, but honestly cold is cold and I'm not a big fan of too much snow. I like the cold.

In the summer the mosquitoes will EAT YOU ALIVE after about 6PM. Property taxes here are very HIGH because of the small population base. The only other thing I will say is there is always a ton of construction going on and so roads may be closed or full of dirt and mud.

Yes it's cold here..... The WHOLE Midwest is cold! I grew up in Chicago for 29 years. Is F ing cold and windy there too! You want warm, move to Arizona! Omaha is different, yes. But really, what do you get in a big city? Crime....gridlock traffic....high prices for EVERYTHING? A night out is like a whole paycheck in Chicago! Honestly, you just need to get creative here! Enjoy the simple things! Go for a drive in the country. Go take in the sites downtown. Yes there is not tons of things to do. But there's also a bunch of neat little things I bet you've never seen. I think there's simply some really neat old buildings downtown. I enjoy walking by all the shops. There are some awesome bars, restaurants and breweries which are WAY more affordable for a night out than Chicago. Apartment living is very fair. Seems like a lot of good jobs out here. Possibly a little limited but oh well. Tons of concert venues to go to. Get some outdoor hobbies for the summer and some indoor hobbies for the winter. Trails, camping, tons of state parks! Things I don't like: the drivers SUCK. Just horrible. Although rush hour is nothing compared to Chicago! Second, I always enjoyed good bread and lunch meat in Chicago. Well, it's very plain here..... White bread and turkey.... But on the other side, there is some good ethnic food. Seems like Mexican food is big around here. I've seen people talk a lot about the sushi places here too . Life is what you make it. If you are the type of person who needs to be in a big city, don't move here.... If you can find interest in the small things and make your own fun, it's great. For me, it's a breath of fresh air compared to Chicago

I don't know. I guess your negatives are my positives. I could care less about the mountains and I'm not a fan of the ocean. I prefer the cold over the brutal humid heat in the summers ( cause I'm built like a polar bear). I love lake and river fishing and there are some good places to do both. I'm old enough to remember Peony Park which was our small amusement park. When it's tornado season, it's perfect time to hang outside with the neighbors and some beer and stare at the sky looking for rotation. We have the Omaha Storm chasers AAA baseball, UNO Sports, Creighton sports, Lancer Hockey, Olympic events, NCAA basketball tourney games, and our baby, The College World Series which draws more than 100,000 every year. Why do we need an NFL team when Husker football is our religion. I got the horse track down the street( which is gonna be that casino as well) other casinos just over the river. Concerts galore (especially if you like Classic Rock groups). There is always something going on, you just gotta look for it. Property taxes do suck however so no argument on that but the decent gas prices compared to most places is a good thing. It does get annoying for people not from here asking to see my tractor drivers license, but hey, in reality I am half farmer so driving a tractor is not a problem. Potholes, yes, are a huge problem, but I've lived here long enough to tell you don't drive through standing water or the outside lane in the springtime. I like your video however, keep up the great work, and remember... There's no place like Stella's.

I have also lived in different parts of the country- PA, MO, TX, SD, etc. I would suggest that even though you are a Nebraska realtor that you consider sharing some of the housing and lifestyle options on the Iowa side of the river with people moving to the metro area. If folks are working downtown, the commute from Iowa is quicker and they will also have their back to the sun instead of in their eyes... The taxes are also MUCH cheaper in Iowa. CB, Glenwood, Treynor, Crescent, etc can offer fun options with the bluffs that are ALMOST mountains for fun and hiking....

If you are an older person I understand that the weather can suck but if you are a younger person under the age of 60 their is no reason why you can't enjoy living somewhere like Nebraska. As for the other crap people are starting to realize that cheaper housing food gas and the amenities of living a good live are more important than the so called cool urban large cities, and besides everyone sits around watching net flix video games and all the other bull sh*t social media crap these days, I'm pretty sure Nebraska has internet service.

My husband and the rest of their clan is from Nebraska, he was born and raised in Omaha,, gotta say this, the first time I got here,, it was not as joyful as I expected just because of the land area it self. I grew up close to the mountains and seas so it was quite something a twitch in my heart.. but not that much anyway..

Lived in Omaha for a few years. Trust me it sucks. Don’t go up north, all the good food is in south O. And the ppl that tend to live there are lifers. The most interesting thing that ppl do on the weekends is go to their local bar.

You nailed it right on the head the main reason I hate Omaha. My father born and raised Omaha now lives in Salt Lake City Utah. New house that he took the time to get built valued around 250K-350k. Now I’m a homeowner here in Omaha House valued about 180K. His property taxes are not even a 10th of my property taxes.
I’m 100% service-connected disabled vet. The VA hospital here in Omaha is what keeps me here. Our VA hospital is a learning hospital. Omaha Nebraska we have some of the best medical colleges around. I’ve heard the horror stories of veterans coming here to see their children. Getting treated for something that they are on a waiting list for another few years at their local VA.
Now I do think we need to change our state motto from “ it’s a good life” to “ still under construction”

I am relieved to hear that the number 1 reason wasn't because I live here lol . One of the reasons that I I hate it here is because like anywhere else you live a lot of the people are rude but other than that it is probably the #1 safest place in the usa to live . One of the problems with moving here from another state is that you are considered an outsider. That is more of a high school thing but a lot of adults have not grown out of it . It is not just Nebraska it is Iowa too .

Safest? Have you seen North Omaha? I read about at least 10 different shootings a day all over the city. There's a reason it's called Little Chicago.

@@therabidpancake1 you might want to check Omaha scanner twitter page. Multiple shootings and stabbings every day all over the city. Worst drivers in the country. Most DUIs in the country. I would hardly call it safe

Moving to Omaha, NE by the end of the month...Unknown of the weather conditions, road conditions etc., what vehicle should I buy? My work location is in downtown omaha...Any valuable suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

      @Tyler_Bundy  2 роки тому +1

Many drive sedan's as the roads are plowed in the winter. Front wheel drive will be helpful. If work will be downtown then and your looking to rent there are several options that will be close. If you looking to buy please find my info in the description and let's talk more... Buying a house is a little more involved and I'm happy to give you some guidance.

One thing I was waiting for you to mention was the drivers haha! I have friends in Lincoln that are scared to drive in Omaha because of the craziness that is Omaha drivers. I can't complain about that one enough, but hey at least it's not as bad as California! (from word of mouth, I've never actually experienced driving in California, I've just heard it's not fun at all)
