ARRMA Kraton 8s 1/5 "BALLISTIC" 980 vs 840kv 56112 Hobbystar with 34/39T Limitless gears...

- When Crazy power is not quite enough. Here's some ballistic test footage running the Hobbystar 980kv on 34/39T with bigger Duratrax and stock wheels. She's good for 60-65mph, but I did find low end cogging with hard starts and the heavier wheels. Also tested a new Hobbystar high torque 6912 servo that did fantastic!!! Shout out to M2C Racing and Fast Track Hobbies in Rocklin, CA.
I failed to mention I upgraded the stock servo to a Hobbystar HS-6912 HV high torque setup 😍. WAY better steering. Had to use the bigger ARRMA servo mount tray and shorten the servo saver screw 2-3mm for proper saver tension. FYI...the plastic saver set plug screw is REVERSE THREADED👀. Must be turned clockwise for removal. If you attempt to run this servo without adding washers/shortening the servo saver set screw, it won't work. Guys have broken this screw trying to make it work full length. 🍻😎💪👊👊

Rich Duperbash i have a question about my arrma typhon v4 6s it makes a loud noise almost like something is grinding but i could not find anything too all differentials out new pinion loosed and tighten the sper gear and still cant find out whats going on so if you possibly know what it is lmk please
Same here. Rc juice is awesome. Bought the leapord 200 amp esc and 1000kv motor. I went with the 5892 be because i wanted a smaller /lighter motor. These bigger cans really need a rear support as the mount flexes. Also installed the hobbystar servo.

I'm sure the 980 would be problem free with maybe a 32/39 set-up 🤔. For now I'm swapping back to the 840 34/34👌. It's just wicked all around especially with bigger meats. The Hobbystar 6912 HV servo is friggin AWESOME 😱. Big Girl turns 100% better and feels super responsive now. Experimenting the last several months has definitely paid off Bro. Wow, Loved it! Perfect, I wanted to ask about Ramps, our only place to Bash is changing. Less Gravel and more sand hills, not a great mix when you try to retrieve a RC. So I can't build due to my Neurological issues anymore, any recommendations? I've beefed up my 4S Kraton a lot, for a first time tinkering I'm happy. Sean, my Guy at Hobby Haven made me a pretty good front bumper for it out of some Granite 3SBLX and a couple other parts. Just had to cut a couple slots for the body to fit. Anyway recommendations to order a Ramp from? Haven't really seen any at my store and we just stated talking about it. Wife knows if it breaks I'll fix it. Think I now have enough Arrma parts to build a truck from scratch. Great job, I like how you keep these bad boys going.

Not that I'm aware of 🤔. GPM makes a hardened steel option that's slightly thicker in diameter. I'll probably just try them. Other thought is trying tool steel pins from McMaster Carr. They're not easy to replace, but it's doable. 🍻😎💪👊👊

I'm about to also build a M2C Outcast from the ground up....looking for ideas to tweek the specs a bit like hybrid style, shock towers, shocks, etc, anything that can be done to make it run better than stock besides the M2C supporting mods?? , like balance and fun tweeks?? And what power combo is a solid go to for big air and plant of torque?

The Hobbystar 840kv is a Beast 😜. Yes....all Limitless spool gears are 8mm bore, fit perfectly on the 8s transmission shaft and motor. I recommend 34/34 gearing 👌. Best to use 2 standard length grub screws on each gear. I filed a small flat spot on my motor shaft to really lock in the 2nd grub screw. 🍻😎💪👊👊
This must be the strongest 1/5 scale rig out there. I really would like to see it on a race with it's Gas Powered brothers of the 1/5 scale league. 😘 I guess the lower kv might be the over all better setup but to be honest, I have no 1/5 experience at all ... Stay safe! 😘😘😘

Excellent rich tests really excellent, without a doubt, with these settings and the k8s is really impressionant😱👍, those hobbystar engines are really powerful, it's really very responsive, you double backflip really easily👍🙂.
I still mount the original smart combo, but I really feel that we lack the power, I'd like to try to test the engine you have of the hobbystar, I hope it won't cost me too much to get it here in Italy😛.

Thanks Brother 🤗. I feel both are fantastic 😍. The Kraton is supreme for getting the power down and excels at rough construction sites. The Outcast is trickier to get the timing down, but is better for stunts and skatepark duties and is really wild fun 🥰. Both can bash all the same terrain, just comes down to individual preference. The Kraton is far more stable and drifts better. 🍻😎💪👊👊

Rich on the hobbystar servo the only thing you had to modify was the screw? No shims or washers? I got the 1/5 servo tray and the hobbystar servo thats going in tomorrow night after work.
All I did was shorten the screw to fully close the saver assembly and get proper servo saver tension 👍. No washers or shims. Believe I also adjusted the steering arm length from the saver to the Ackerman for proper centering and steering throw 🤔. On a side note, if running the M2C chassis, make sure the inner edge of the bigger 1/5th servo mount clears the center M2C stiffener plate. I filled my mount just a tad cuz it looked like it was resting on the stiffener. You want the mount to bolt flat onto the chassis of coarse. 🍻😎💪👊👊

I am trying out the gpm 7mm cvds. Tired of breaking the ears on the stock cvd. They also bend very easy because they are just too long.
Big difference between 840 vs 980 with this motor?
Both are great motors. The 840 is best for the K8s in my opinion having more max torque. The 980 is a monster in the O8s
Thank you and which gearing would be good to keep the temps in check yet to have a decent top speed in your opinion? I'm in FL so trying to keep the temp down as much as possible
@@andruhanovo6583 the 840 works great with 34/34 gearing, but you can run 39/39 or some other 1/1 gearing in between those sizes. The 980 would probably be best to run 30/39 or 32/39. I run 34/39, but Sacramento heat is much drier than Florida.
Primalrc has a 56113, 960kv, 8 pole motor. I wonder if an 8 pole would help the clogging issue.

Thanks Brother 👊!!!! It's quite possible an 8 pole setup would help as although the relative RPM is reduced, the torque is increased with additional poles 🤔. Simply going down a couple teeth would definitely help. The 34/39 set-up is just a tad tall with heavier, high traction wheels. 🍻😎💪👊👊

Nice setup, lotts of power. what suspension arms do you use? My stock rear arm was broken within 10 min. Out of the box, after a small jump, Big disappointment😁specially there is nothing on stock here in the Netherlands.
Thanks Marco 🤗!!!! I'm loving this high power setup 😍. So sorry to hear about your misfortune with the arm. I'm still running all original stock arms since November 👀. I swapped a front I cracked after hitting a steel construction stake head on several vids back. I think part of my good luck (was first running lighter oils 30-35 weight) then adding droop screws to the arms and M2C 8s O ring style slotted pistons for better dampening with less bounce. If the shocks compress easier, the chassis does more of the work taking strain from suspension parts. 🍻😎💪👊👊

I would like to know how the engine doesn't heat up using these gear configurations! Because I use 35/39 with a max5 esc and a hobbystar 780kv and the engine temperature is over 200F 😕 Do you have any idea why this is happening? Thank you.

I recently picked up the K8S and LOVE it, but want to upgrade for the best combination of speed/torque while maintaining some wheelie power. Thanks so much Brother 😜. I'm currently running a Leopard 5898 1100kv with 30/39 gearing. It's got good power, but it's nowhere near as smooth as my Hobbystar 56112 980 or 840kv 🤔. I'm planning to switch back soon. Both the 980 on 34/39 gearing and 840 on 34/34 gearing are fantastic 😍. I think my overall favorite is the 840. It's got gobs of torque and is plenty fast on 1/1 gearing. Turns out I had a bad connection early on running my 980. The 980 has more top end, but the 840 has explosive acceleration. Either one is excellent with the right gearing (depending on wheel size and mass). Both push the heavier Kraton no problem. 😎💪👊👊

If you don't know or haven't seen Earl Mooreheads videos on UA-cam the most recent ones he is building his Kraton 8s and he has a tool that replaces them pins but one of the first thing he does on all of his RC's is replace them pins with stainless steel ones. And he shows the company that he gets them from too. Or u can find one of his most recent videos and ask him. He is very helpful and knowledgeable and will reply to you very quickly

What batteries do you recommend using for the 800kv hobbywing max 5 setup with 39/39 gearing?
Sorry I missed this Brayson. Definitely want quality high discharge rated, higher mAh packs. I've had good luck overall with Hobbystar 8000mah 4s and more recently Zeee 7200mah 80c and Yowoo 6500 graphenes. I try not to spend a fortune, but go with what works and gets solid reviews from other basher's. 🍻😎💪👊👊

Yes....these are stock CVDs. Mitch with M2C Racing got a new CNC machine that will easily make 4041 steel or Titanium driveshafts 😱. Might be a few weeks before the first batch, but they're coming. Much needed IMO for running big power without issues. 😎💪👊👊

Hey Tony 🤗. The 840kv is great on 1/1 gearing. I prefer 34/34 gearing. Some guys run 39/39 to utilize the ARRMA 8s 39 spur gear option. For the 980kv, I like 32/39 gearing. 🍻

Thanks so much Nick 🤗!!!! Had such a Killer time testing the 980. with the guys 🍻. She'd probably run cog free - perfect with 2 less teeth. Does fine with the stock tires, but I like the meatier Duratrax lugs 💪. So far I'm loving the 6912 HV 🥰🥰. Plenty of power with perfect speed and responsiveness 👌. Only thing is it's not waterproof. The crawdad dude has a channel, but I forgot the name 🤣🤙🤙😎💪👊👊
@@richduperbash2966 do you ever waterproof servos? If you do what non conductive marine grease do you use. I have a sweet savox i have barely used because it too is not waterproof.ive kept my eyes out for a while for the right marine grease n havent had any luck
I've had the same thing happen to my drive shaft pins on my 6s notorious i got some tooled bearing steel and cut them to length and pressed them into the drive shafts and never had a problem since👍 i run hardened steel thicker output cups also.
