I really liked seeing this stone go into a beautiful ring! I know a lot of people are going to ask about the value of the sapphire. Value on stones like this depend a lot on who it selling it and I'm not an actual appraiser, but I'd estimate the value of it cut and after heating to be somewhere between $1,000-$2000/carat. Before heating, maybe $800/carat. The piece is 4.62 carats.
I just found a >9 carat stone in some Eldorado Bar mail-order gravel. It's a pretty nice sky blue color, but has some silk and will need heat treatment. Also, it's got some pretty big fractures down the middle. At what point do cracks make a stone impractical to facet? It's big, and has a nice crystal shape, so I'm confident it would be an impressive stone if it's possible to cut it. But if it's probably just going to fall apart, I'll just keep it as a mineral specimen. (I realize you can't evaluate a stone without seeing it, but I can send pictures if you're curious).
Heat treating is such a gamble. Yes: color is richer, clarity generally better, and I'm betting the owner is pretty happy with the result. But... as a collector, I love brighter "sleepy" or silky sapphires, and an unheated Montana over 4 ct is incredibly rare. Well, even a heated one is incredibly rare! Thank you for sharing your process for weight retention while maximizing beauty. It really shows how an expert gem cutter uses science, art, and experience all together.
Amazing! Never knew these tools existed to show you how the gem will look before you cut it and how you're able to adjust it to get the perfect cut desired. My dream job is to work in the gem/jewelry business one day. Thank you for sharing this wonderful knowledge 🙏🏽
beautiful cut. The heat treatment really brought out the dark blues of that sapphire. the cloudiness might have worked out in their favor if they enjoy a deep navy blue
I'm not an expert or anything of course but I gotta say, I kinda liked how it looked better before the heat treatment. That super gentle blue with the slight cloudiness kinda reminded me of a sky with some wispy clouds or something.
Im so glad you're still uploading and cutting! so many of my favourite cutters have passed or stopped uploading because of low view count but you're out here smashing it! thankyou!!!! (get a patrion PLEASE so we can support you)
I'm having a lot of fun searching through Montana sapphire gravel. I don't cut gems myself, so I just (today) sent a parcel back to Gem Mountain to have them cut (and some heat treated as well). It'll be a bit of a wait, but I'm excited to see how they come back. I loved the natural color of this one, but it was pretty cloudy, so I think I would have gone with heat treatment too.
Math, what a Beauty of a Gem you pulled out of your Magic Hat! I am in Awe! Yes, I love the way the Table became kind of a marquise Shape (sorry for my vocabulary). I am fascinated, hypnotized by watching you cutting Stones! Greetings from snowy Quebec.
this is SO CRAZY. just a curious mind who wanted to know how stuff is made AND THIS IS SUPER INTERESTING i had no clue how mathematical and technical of skills you needed for something like this. Very talented and skilled!!
Dude, I love your channel, please Keep making videos. I’d really like to see more on the process of you designing the facets on the computer. Great work 👍🏻
Wow. Have gone thru nuckets and buckets from Spokane Bar Mine. The sapphires I've retrieved have been small and fractured. Congratulations on a lovely find.
When I 1st moved to this area a girl I worked with had a pink stone set in white gold. I asked what stone it was & she said a Pink Sapphires from her father's mine. It was amazing to visit with her dad when we went there.
Thank you! Have been wanting a gents white sapphire ring for approx. Three years. According to a book on mysticism the white sapphire us supposed to render special powers to piceans. Hence have been hoping to design a ring and find a nice big ten carrot white sapphire for myself. Your vidio has given me hope that in Montana I might find such a stone. Thank you for your beautiful vidio!
Wow stone looks amazing, after you cut it and it was heat treated! What is the approximate value of the sapphire after being completely finished Matt ?
Hey Matt ! That's an amazing work you do ! Congrats! I wanna ask how you learn stone facetting, because I wanna try and mabye learn for doing it as a professionals. I begin to watch a lot of videos about facetting and I begin to understand how it works but finding a facetting machine is pretty expensive (I'm in France btw).... What's your advice and tips for begining as the hobbyist I am😀
I'm a new subscriber and I love the content even though I don't know much about it. On the closeups of the stone where you're holding it, your nails tend to look beat up. idk if it's due to biting your nails(I do the same when I watch soccer) or if they get damaged from what you do for a living, but honestly with all the grits and shining and polishing and every other similarity to stone-cutting, nail care would probably be a cool side hobby for a guy who works on gems to pick up. Sorry if that's offensive, just something I noticed.
This might sound dumb but do gem cutters get inspiration from origami? I just noticed from your videos how similar facets are to the symmetry of origami folds
Beautiful stone especially after heating! I was under the impression that if you heat a sapphire after its cut you have to repolish the facets …… does not appear to be the case with this stone?
most heat treaters will have a lap on site and they'll re-polish as a fee with the treating, much cheaper and easier to re-polish a stone rather than fully cut one from rough.
The cloudiness is caused by a mineral called rutile. The heating process reaches a temperature that is too low to melt sapphire, but high enough to melt the rutile. Once the rutile reaches the right temp, it diffuses into the sapphires crystal structure and produces the brilliant blue color.
I'm surprised that channels like these that show the whole process and are really down to earth aren't more popular.
I watch these videos when they hit my recommended. Thanks for reminding me to hit subscribe!
That's because people won't shock and awe😂😂😂
Try, black opal direct...

I never thought I would spend my Saturday night watching videos on gem stone cutting. Well done! Please keep them coming.
Stone like a Aquamarine
A gorgeous cut that was even prettier after heat treating. Thanks.
Wow! Gorgeous stone, awesome cutting...and the heat treatment made it pop!
I really liked seeing this stone go into a beautiful ring!

You do some really good work and just got yourself a new subscriber🎉
Sir I have more rough diamonds

I prefer unheated. Is this unusual?

Spent the whole video wondering about heat treatment... That is beautiful, and looks great. You did a wonderful job, and I bet they are very happy.
wow the final ring looks amazing. def the right choice to heat treat to get that blue color.

Very difficult trade, you master the cutting of precious stones, thank for the video. Best Regards.
Really enjoy these videos. Beautiful work
Yay more Matt’s corner! I watched all of your videos when i first found your channel and was disappointment when there wasn’t more to watch!
❤It actually turned out very pretty after the heat treatment! What a nice surprise! Very nice cut by the way!❤

Nice work! I live in Montana and am good friends with a lot of the local sapphire mines. Good people.
Like your work 😮
That was the best stone I’ve ever seen
Gasp! What a beautiful stone you created, it looks gorgeous in its setting.
God created the stone. He just cut it. :)
I thought the gem looked a little weird but the ring designer really brought it all together and made it look awesome.
I can’t wait to see you cut the pink sapphire you found!! I’m also curious about that big, long one you said will make an incredible emerald cut!

Yo the cad and 3d work is awesome! So cool to see that process before you start cutting
Dude, I love your channel, please

Really liked seeing the process of creating the diagram
Gorgeous work as always!

Awesome. Need to get myself to the dig area this year!!
Haven't cut a sapphire over one and a half carat cut. Crappy part is that thing went flying and I can't find it. Beautiful work
Yes you will :) It'll be sitting on your work bench one day, you'll see 🍀
Just found your channel! I’m loving the content. Keep it up!
Wow! That's so awesome 😮
Very interesting. That machine is awesome.
I liked the cloudiness ☁
Splendid to meet you fellow Geomancer.
Really cool channel Matt!
Beautiful work 👏
Amazing work ❤
I would like to watch you cutting a rough diamond 💎
Gorgeous!
When they say “cutting gems” I genuinely thought they cut them, like carving. Grinding it makes so much more sense though XD
Cool to see the computer program aswell.
u have such a beautiful eye for this... im always watching.....😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Been blowing glass 10+ years now. Holding out for my $6-7k ultra tech lap. This end goals. Mostly w glass, but of course, gems as well.
Very cool to see the GamCAD action
Sir, Aaj Aapane option selling ka poora raaj (Benefit) khol dia, thanks lot.
Wow. That's fantastic.
Remarkable faceting skills. I use a VJ machine, I hope my cutting can get to your level.
ima sucker for a dial machine. i have the digital upgrade, but i like the dial better. great cutting brother.
Keep em coming!
I didn't know that faceting gemstones was sooo easy.
🤣
Damn do I love rocks
Unpopular opinion but I love the cloudy greenish/grayish/blue of the montana sapphires 😍
It's my niece's engagement ring!
this stuff is so damn cool i love watching these videos
It seems fascinating! Iwant to cut my own gems too. Where can i learn this skill?
I like the soft spherical warp it does with this low clarity. Would actually prefer this to a clearer stone, feels more natural.
Beautiful
How much u charge to cut sum stone i have.
Howdy boss I would love to have one of my aquamarines cut by you ❤ I have a lot of large aquamarine
Wow stone looks amazing, after you cut it and it was heat treated!
What is the approximate value of the sapphire after being completely finished Matt ?
thanks for sharing your process! what lap are you using for the 600 grit? and what cutting laps do you suggest?
Hey Matt ! That's an amazing work you do ! Congrats!

IS all right THAT IS BREATH TAKING
Very cool to see the process. How long, approximately, does it take you to do a gem?
Do you cut stones for other people? I love your videos. I have a 1.3 ct of Tourmaline. Is it too small to cut?
Amazing work, thank you for sharing the process. Its a shame it got treated, it looked stunning as it was.
Very interesting !
Fascinating
This might sound dumb but do gem cutters get inspiration from origami? I just noticed from your videos how similar facets are to the symmetry of origami folds
Fascinating 👍
New sub here.
Thanks in advance. What is the procedure that how to identify which face is used for table?
I have a plastic container full of little rocks that look like that...how do i get them polished up
very nice
How it looked so blue at the end?
Beautiful stone especially after heating! I was under the impression that if you heat a sapphire after its cut you have to repolish the facets …… does not appear to be the case with this stone?

How did it turn blue in the end? Because of the heat treatment?
Yes, the client sent it in for heat treatment after I sent it back. Heat treatment is primarily used to enhance color and clarity.
I’m curious what you charge to facet a gem of the size. I’m interested in getting some gems faceted in the future.
where can i send the stone to get heat treated?
l have one like this. what is this stone. name. how much price it can sale?
Exquisite!
So I'm aware there are different colours of sapphire but do all blue sapphires need to be heat treated to get the classic sapphire blue look?
Nice sir
Colors some pieces black , brown , orangish grey and there pieces color pink , red about 20~50 carat with kimberlite stone
I'm just curious to know what the gem is worth in dollars.
Are these really Sapphires or just colored quarts called Montana Sapphires?
Esse corte é fantasia? E safira não poli igual rubi, disco de cobre?
Excellent🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
hi sir, i wanna asking if you had attended any school of gems faceting? or you learn it by your self. thank you.
How many different kinds of sapphires are there ?
If you mean color, sapphire is every color but red, which is known as "ruby" even though all of these are the mineral corundum.
how much does the stone-cutting wheel thingy cost? im looking to get into this as a hobby
2.5 - 6 thousand for the machines. The price variance depends on the age of the machine (used vs new)
Well, I WAS going to ask what colour you thought a heat treat would give, but it showed up as i was typing it.
How does one go about hiring you? I have a cuprite crystal and want to find someone to cut it for me.
Would you be interested in cutting another big quartz crystal like the one you did in the video
Essa pedra é água marinha?
Why did the color change so dramatically after being heat treated?😲
The cloudiness is caused by a mineral called rutile. The heating process reaches a temperature that is too low to melt sapphire, but high enough to melt the rutile. Once the rutile reaches the right temp, it diffuses into the sapphires crystal structure and produces the brilliant blue color.
شكرا لك انك رائع ❤
