Hey Matt, I am a new cutter, having cut 7 stones so far. I think I have watched every faceting video on UA-cam. This video shows details that no one else has shown. thanks
G’day Matt, I have been cutting stones for about 40 years, although not many over the last 8 or 9 years, noticed that you are using the same cutting system as the Long and Steel cutters that they used to refer to as “Meetpoint” Faceting, which is the same technique that I was taught all those years ago, I used to have a full set of facet design books by Long and Steel in the meetpoint system, only one of my family members thought he needed it more than I did.. I get by mostly from memory now, or if I have something that would suit one of the more exotic cuts, I put the word out on one of the social media posts like Facebook and usually only takes a few days and someone will offer up a few pages on the design, I like your method of cutting, and your narrative as you cut.. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and suggestions for faceting, you have given me a dig in the ribs to get the Ultra Tec out of moth balls and have another go at cutting some freeform Queensland Sapphires again.. Stick with the cutting mate, it’s a good trade to keep your hand in touch with.. Regards Den, BiggenDen Queensland Au
Absolutely awesome tutorial. Your patients to explain each detail is evident in the end results. Thank you so much for sharing your passion of gem cutting.
Great tutorial. Now to buy the tools needed to do this and head out to the mountains and other public mines for materials. I’ve been wanting to do this for sometime now.
I often use baking soda with super glue and was thinking of mentioning that to you while I watched the last video. I'm happy that this technique works for this purpose.
I’m a fairly new cutter and I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. You explained a lot that I never really understood so thank you. Hopefully you have many more of these videos. Take care of God bless
This is a lot easier than I thought it would be. You explained it so well! Do you use those diagrams for every stone? Do you ever so any of them purely by eyesight alone? I'd imagine the diagrams are much preferred, even though you can gauge a lot by looking at it.
Thank you for this great work. And I wish you would provide me with a link to get a refiner like you have because I'm working on an inaccurate Chinese machine. And thank you again for this wonderful and rare effort.
Thank you for doing this video. Attention to detail in every aspect of this sure helps a newbie! The pros skip over so many beginner things that we just do not get it. I am having a difficult time getting to the culet! I seem to be going round and round the stone until I am out of room for the crown. Think I need to watch a 3rd time to remember how to fix this. I have an older machine that seems a bit more mechanical. More feel than watching an indicator. Here is a question for you. All my laps are different thicknesses, so every time I change the lap I must adjust the height, I spin until there is no contact then lower until it makes contact then do 1 turn down on the tower knob (facetron, 20 years old) how should this be done?
Hi. Just starting faceting myself when I came across this video. Regarding your culet issues. I had same problem with my first couple of stones. What worked for me was to first to preform my stone (round in this case) as close to round as possible using the 90 degree freewheel. Then I go about working the pavilion. And yes, your laps all all different thickness's so you will always adjust the height whenever you change laps. Just lower the adjuster head until the gem just kisses the lap.
What is the smallest stone that can be faceted on this machine? I found some garnets and sapphires but they are around 3mm and I wonder if I can use such machine to facet them in a convenient way?
I am very interested in this type of craft but i'm unsure where to start with trying it, is it best to get a cheap machine and some synthetic or cheap crystals or is it better to go full in on the theory first before getting started with any cutting?
Hi Matt hello from France ! I started cutting like 1week ago and i have already done some stone and my polish on stone is more like ice freezy , we don't see throught . Do u think its because of my polishing step on my copper lap with a 10k diamond paste / oil which is too big grit ? Btw i'm waiting to receive a 60k diamond powder , do u think with the same copper lap and this powder the polish gonna be a lot more mirror clean see through ? If yes , Do u think i stop using my 3000 grit topper diamond lap for prepolish and just prepolish with copper lap and the 10k diamond paste and switch to final polish on same copper lap with the 60k powder ? Thx for your responses !
I haven't used copper, I've seen it used more for pre-polish. I don't know if that is a issue or not. 10k should look fairly polished, but not as fine as the 60k. You may try using a tin or some other final polish lap with the 60k to see if you get better results. Also, use designated laps with grit sizes. The grit used on the alloy laps embeds in the surface of the metal. So you can't use a finer grit where a heavier grit has been, or you will get bits of the embedded heavier grit that is still there cutting away at the stone causing the finer grits to not take like they should. Thus, your final polish may not be polishing well from this.
Hey, i'm new to facetting, how do you decide which mast hight you chose at the beginning of the prozess? Because when its to low, i would grind away so much stone, but when its to high i wouldn't geht a nice center. Sorry if you mentioned it, englisch is not my native language 😅
The odds of succeeding as a beginner is directly proportional to the money spent on equipment. Repeatability of the tool is extremely important. To obtain this repeatability requires extremely accurate bearings, spindles etc. this why this machine costs as much as it does. You can buy a cheap/sloppy machine and achieve results that will frustrate you and probably cause you to abandon the hobby. I suggest you somehow get some time on a machine such as this one to see if you have the patience, eyesight and steadiness. Even though it looks simple there is a tremendous amount of skill (hand pressure for example) AND the repeatability of the machine to make a quality cut.
I'm a professional gemstone cutter in sri lanka(ceylon).i can make cuts such as drop, oval, round, heart, cushion, emerald and octagon like that.i want to know which country you are from?
That is the way I cut a round brilliant. That stone finished at 8.9mm and 2.78 carats.
eyyy youre back keep up the good work
What is the approx $ to buy the equipment to be able to do this caliber of craftsmanship. I'm considering taking this up as a profession. Thanks

Excellent video. Thank you for putting this together. Really helpful for those of us just starting out.
Great tutorial.

I really like the sharpie on the gem it helps to visualize how the faucets connect
Thanks!
Really nice job explaining the process and your completed gem.
Can’t wait to watch more of your videos!!
Great job! You are so informative and clear in your explanation and presentation 👏 ❤

Thank you so much for your explanation of this project. It was a nice experience to share the details of the cutting process.
thanks for walking us through the experience.
Love these videos, these are the type of videos I watch before I crash out.
Hi Matt, you are so brilliant, thank you for sharing invaluable knowledge, God bless you!
Great video! I’m wanting to start dabbling with gem cutting as a hobby. This was really great information!
Hi
I found you recently and subscribed immediately.
Thank you for the step by step, I'm waiting for my Faceting Machine to get in so I can start.
Don't stop making this quality content!
Hi
hej
Beautiful sharing 😊
Very nice video, I have to get started, I’m sure it’s not as easy as it looked, but that’s experience. Thanks for sharing
Hi
Brilliant thanks Matt.
I'm a newbie and will be trying my 1st faceting on Smokey crystals or zircons. The smokey has an RI of 1.54 so ideal. Thankyou.
Thanks for the detailed step by step!
looks like a lot of work , you make it look ez. Thanks Matt.
very useful! thank you! enjoyed the great detail.
muy bueno me encanto este trabajo
Congratulations on the good work. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Greetings straight from Brazil.
Are the lap discs all the same thickness or do you have to adjust for the variances? Great information. Beautiful job!!
They are all different thicknesses. The mast height is adjusted when changing laps, lowering the stone to lightly touch the lap.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video!
Bro..I binged your videos I need more lol... like alot more please

brilliant job , you are a master .
Love the vids where did you by your set up
This might get me another hobby 😂
Good video. Worth a like and subscribe 😁
So where do you get the diagrams from?
Here are two good places I've used to find diagrams.

Fantastic explanation
Do you leave the cheater knob turned for the whole of cutting the crown? And then do you reset the cheater knob when cutting the table?
Yes, I leave the cheater rotated for the whole crown and reset it for cutting the table.
Hi Matt. what kind of glue do you use?
I've been using gorilla super glues. Liquid super glue when attaching the flat dop and gel super glue with the coned dops when transferring.
What type of lab you use to polish?
Making me want to start cutting again!
Thank you 🙏 ❤
How do you not file your fingers away? Genuine question

What would you charge to cut a stone for a fan and make a video about it?
It would depend a lot on the size/difficulty of the stone.
How many hands-on hours does a cut like this take?
With the amount of experience I have, I can do a round brilliant that size in less than 2 hours of hands on time.
ths alot of good info
I have three stones that I would like cut, not sure what they are. Found them at the crater of diamonds. Might be some kind of volcanic glass

Gorgeous
For a beginner, what would you recommend for a faceting machine?
The odds of succeeding as a beginner is directly proportional to the money spent on equipment.
