    As an old-school musician who has never used a computer to mix music, I am amazed that you can use a computer program to cram a months' worth of arranging and engineering into one hour, and single out a single voice from a thirty year old sampler that nobody's heard of out of hundreds of choices! Very fun to watch!

      There’s a great deconstruction video from Trevor Horn (who produced Relax), on here of Yes’s Owner of a lonely heart. And they’ve digitised all the analogue tracks to computer. Great video. If you want it, reply here and will put up link 👍

    Trevor Horn is an absolute studio wizard genius. This track is all him. Recreating his work is tough, because he is such a perfectionist. So much ear candy in there! Now let me sit back and watch...

    • @EstuaryMists
      @EstuaryMists 2 роки тому +9

      Whilst there’s no doubt that Trevor Horn was the driving force behind this track, I wouldn’t underestimate the role Andy Richards played. All the Jupiter keyboard parts and FX were his and I believe they were played live to tape rather than sequenced, giving quite a unique feel when set against the metronomic Linndrum and Fairlight.

    • @MaxiSokrates
      @MaxiSokrates 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, he is absolutley brilliant and one of the masterminds when it comes to the sound from the 80s. And he is a perfectionist/freak. A lot of things happen in his tracks, so its not easy to recreate his songs 1:1

      When you want to get your car pimped, you go to west coast customs, and when you want to get your music pimped, you go to Trevor Horn.
      Btw, doctor mix did recreate this song in no-time, so when he would take a full day or maybe a week, then he could recreate it 100% thanks
      to the modern equipment, because in 1984 they needed a room full of heavy and large equipment to create a song, and now
      the whole studio and all instruments and sounds fit on a micro sd card. And Trevor had to work with was available back then and that was
      waaaay less than now. And did you see that live performance on the prince's thrust, about 15 years ago? That was the best live performance
      i have ever seen and listened too, because there's not a single note that is not performed as on the record, and that is just stunning!

    • @arfcorps
      @arfcorps 2 роки тому +4

      Per Trevor Horn himself, Trevor left the studio for the evening frustrated he couldn’t get the track to sound the way he wanted it, he came back the next day and Andy Richards had put in an all nighter. Andy played Trevor what he’d been working on and Trevor knew immediately Andy had nailed it. Andy Richards deserves a lot of credit for Relax.

    All the drums were Linndrum sync locked to the Fairlight Page R and composer which was standard if you had the gear in 1983. It created rock solid timing with the chunky sound of the Linn. Stewart Copeland did it with his Fairlight for all his soundtracks with his Fairlight II and III . Notably for The Equalizer soundtrack he sync locked to his Oberheim DMX drum machine to his Fairlight (and also the Simmons SDS-5 to the bassline pattern on the Fairlight on the main theme) instead of Horn's Linn. Richard Harvey locked the Simmons to the Fairlight the same year for the Terrahawks soundtrack as well with Steve Rance (from Fairlight) engineering and producing that superb example.
    The four on the four main bass was a Kramer bass sampled into the PPG Waveterm which is why it has that slightly crispy edge due to the sample rate and resolution of the Waveterm ( from about 50kHz to 4kHz ). It's not a piano sample. This was doubled with the Yamaha DX-7 bass 1 patch as nearly everyone would double DX-7 bass in the 80s - (often using the punchy bass 1 or a custom more analog sounding one like Stock Aitken and Waterman often used later) with an analog synth for more low end. In this case it's the DX-7 that gives the low end as the Bass 1 patch properly engineered has a very decent low end ("Take On Me" by a-ha being a prime example of it being used solo with decent production).
    The synth sixteenths (that can be heard clearly without the multitrack on the New York Mix) were all Fairlight according to Trevor Horn.
    The famous unison filter sweep bass was the Jupiter JP-8.
    I think that covers the main bits but you've done a lovely interpretation Claudio. Most enjoyable :)

    Trevor Horn, the wizzard of the 80’s. He’s arrangements are always so intricate and full of little details. Whether it is Yes, The Buggles, Art Of Noise or Franky it all has superb and interesting arrangements. I always discover little details and layers in his work. He also was a massive user of the Fairlight CMI.

    This world is strange... Something I don't understand here. Over 600k subscribers, only 116k views of this amazing episode, and only about 4k likes...!? It's hard to believe that channels as creative and inspiring as this one have so little viewership, but channels where there is nothing important, the usual stupidity like someone farts, and have millions of views! It's a pity that people like Dr Mix, who has an amazing knowledge of music in general, its arrangement, musical instruments, especially synthesizers, can't break through to a larger audience. How much potential is left untapped! It's really sad that these days, stupidity and nonsense are winning over knowledge, enthusiasm and passion. I hope, that one day this will change, people will return to the right way and it will finally be appreciated that someone has devoted years to learning and wants to share the acquired knowledge with viewers. Kind regards! Dr. Mix - you are great!

    Its alright i bet you just forgot. He used to pitch the sounds of the linndrum with the pitch knob.
    This is what was used for the track.
    Bass = PPG wave 2.3 waveterm B sample T040/41
    Pads/strings = Roland jupiter 8
    Laser sounds = synclavier II
    Drums = Linndrum LM2 and Sequential drumtraks
    The rest is all PPG wave samples and fairlight.

To think this was done in '84 really hits home that technology is no supplement for talent. Big up Dr.mix and thank you. I'd love you to do some breakdowns of some early Yello stuff. (to the tune of Relax) Alas.. no Linn drum.. when you want the same bassdrum.. alas, no Linn Drum.. when you want a tom.. Alas, no Linn Drum, those congas simply won't do it, alas No Linn Drum...... WHEN YOU WANT A TOM ;-) Songs like this from the mid 80s always fascinate me as they were mastered for play on FM radio with its associated multiband processors and limiters, so way more genius than anyone realises when it comes to Trevor Horn productions. You can hear the emphasis on the original multitrack that was 'de-emphasised' for broadcast. Some of the most popular pop songs ever were compressed to F**..... no accident ;-) Great work, Claudio

    I had to learn this for my band. This has been a huge help, although I wish I'd seen it before I learned and programmed it. I've learned lot's more and just went back and tweaked all my sounds. Thank you for another great video and the amount of work you put in.
    I've just done a wee video of my version of Two Tribes. Now there's a challenge for you. It was certainly a challenge for me ( I had to call on a number of Mainstage geniuses too). Cheers!!

    Great song, always brings me back "Body Double" that I watched at the College's rec room!

    Definitely a LinnDrum on the original, the 707 didn't come out until 1985, 2 years after Relax.

    A fascinating video. I loved Relax and owned several mixes of it when it was released. Oddly, it's remembered for its simplcity and simple effectively one note bassline, but you've shown it's WAYYYYY more complex than that. Hats of to Trevor Horn, and to you. My favourite Frankie Goes track was Welcome to the Pleasuredome as the arrangement was amazing, I'm now going to look to see if you've done that... Thanks again
