I have to say, the impassioned way you spoke about Mata Nui Online was beautiful. You clearly love this universe, and you made a completely comprehensive guide to the games made for it. If I'm being honest, I'm kind of disappointed that someone beat me to it, but I'm glad you did such a good job of it. Having sold all my Bionicles a while ago, I really want to find a way to communicate what these toys meant to me as a child to my hypothetical children. Videos like this help this cause greatly.

I wonder what if Traveller's Tale created a Bionicle game that is kinda like the recent Lego games they created? Play through the 2001-2010 story as various characters, create a customization character and exploring well known locations...That would be nice. Oh yeah, and 2 player co-op.

That's actually a good way to look at it. Bionicle Heroes doesn't do anything concerning the actual plot of the series, it's basically just us playing with our toys
25:00 this right here I think is such an overlooked element. BIONICLE never needed those levels of over-the-top seriousness and I think that in the long run, they might have even hurt the franchise, at least partially.
I actually liked the way Hero Mode worked in the PC demo of Bionicle Heroes better. You had to manually activate it and its effect was temporary. Once it ran out, you had to collect studs and activate it again.

I just recently played MNOG to refresh my memories and I accidently fell in love with Kapura. That intro in Ta-Wahi with all his crazy talk about Makuta being in dead soil and burnt trees, the subtleties that make this dead forest beautiful - it's just so profound and eery at times, you could literally write a fanfiction about this guy.

I made a game back in 2010 where you can play as pretty much every single bionicle character in G1 (the plan was for it to mark the 1st 10 years before I knew they were ending it). Basically a cut down super smash bros type of thing. It's called "Bionicle Smash" and it was uploaded to the YoYoGames play section of their website, but I think they may have shut that part of the website down :(

This gave me a double-barreled blast of nostalgia. Not only for Bionicle, but for that weird span of time in the early 00's when it was de rigueur for IPs licensing games to basically develop two different games for two different platforms and call them by the same title. What was up with that, anyway? I get the hardware limitations of the time for handhelds, but I still can't believe that was ever acceptable conduct.
Man, I miss the MNOG. Is it even still playable since Flash kicked the bucket?
bionicle heroes I reckon had some of the best music in the bionicle game series, especially thok’s mountain, the themes for that district fits the snowy tundra theme very well, also it sounds like a marvel movie 😆 the rahkshi boss theme on the other hand scare the shit out of me as a child and vezon’s boss theme is just pure intense orchestral goodness

You forgot bionicle heroes for the gameboy advanced SP.
Its a lot more simple than then console version, and shorter, just an easy top down shooter.
But its a very fun one, i have completed the game at least 25 times by now, and i still play it to this day.
And by god, i swear, it has the greatest soundtrack i have ever heard, i got all of it downloaded on all my devices, and listen to it pretty much when ever i play anything else. ( track 10 frozen arena is the best )

Do you know if the Bionicle Heroes games for the Wii, Ps2, Xbox 360 are all the same exact game? I know the DS and GBA versions are different but the guides on gamefaqs seem to offer different levels?
Holy crap I remember logging into Bionicle.com long ago and playing the quest game online. It was amazing; loved the rail shooter segments and music in Le-Koro.

One thing I never understood is people's strange obsession to refuse to create games that are actually true to the Lore and story of whatever it's based on.
Why were they so against making a Bionicle game that actually follows the story, and allows you to use the powers and masks of the Toa as they are intended, while following the story?

Unfortunately, the MNOG 3D project was ended. you can't download the game anymore, however the original developers is allowing anyone to continue their work and download the project files. hopefully, someone will pick up where they left off
I love the console Bionicle Heroes. I picked it up expecting it to be naff, but I loved it a lot. Probably my favourite LEGO game (apart from maybe LEGO racers)
what sadness me the most is that we never GOT a G2 Bionicle game... It could of been the once chance we got to ACTUALLY see the Toa fight like the Toa did in Journey to One, but under our control. If I could say how Id like it to of played, Id suggest something like with games like Bayonetta, Transformers Devestation, and the new TMNT game. With how fast passed the action in those games gets, and the combos you can pull off, it would of been awesome to see Tahu summon waves of fire to defeat enemies, or Onua causing the earth to open up and swallow enemies, make ice bridges with Kopaka to slide down, or even do what Lewa did in Journey to One, summon roots and vines from underground and knock foes back. And the story coulda done what Bionicle- The Game did, but not pick and choose what to do and where to place it... either way, its just a dream now.
When you talked about that first Bionicle game, as it is less of a game and more like an interactive read and exploring of the world, which sounds great, another for of video games: you reminded me of a comic called Homestuck, a webcomic that sort of makes a tribute/satire to videogames. The story centers through one, so it has a lot references to videogame mechanics, specially RPGs.
The universe is huge and interesting and as the story progresses you still feel there's so much more to discover. The dialogs are good, though they may be quite extensive for some, it is a very long read if you decide to go through all of it.
But I really recomend it if you're familiarized with internet culture and good stories (plus nerd material).

Lately I've been getting back into Bionicle but I didn't really feel the same as I did before. Just picking them up and posing them. But after your view on the reboot and having Bionicle still around, I realize that i'm not alone. I still love it and have a new/fresh look on this. I hope to see more stuff from you man!

I just got finished watching the new Bionicle reboot animations and I think they are really good. Also have you seen the Memorial to Bionicle on Legomation's channel? Its really sweet.
I remember having a point 'n' click puzzle game set in Metru Nui. I think it came free with something on a collection of mini-disks.
I'm a little miffed you drop the fast food running gag midway through the video.
Oh, wow... this is just what I needed to see. All this reminiscing got me to dig up my old copy of the Bionicle videogame, install it, and play through the whole thing in one sitting. (It's not very long...) And you've definitely got it right. The kinds of environments and atmosphere that Bionicle evokes are just incredible. So much so that, looking back, I'm quite certain that its this kind of style that's been influencing the kind of environments I've been holding together in one of my own projects. Though perhaps with a bit of Unreal and maybe some Elder Scrolls if I try those out sometime.
And I've most certainly gotta try out these online games as well. Lookin' forward to these!
I've played bionicle heroes on PC.
My gripe with that game, are mostly lore things.
But aside from that I liked the game. Avak's battle theme and theme of Vezok's are my favourite.
PS. I was kinda angry about goofy Rodaka
The goofiness was fine, it's part of how TT Games does their games, goofy humor.
What bothered me most is that they gave Roodaka and Hahli male voices.
Bionicle Heroes DS was actually a fun treat. If you haven't played it, I recommend giving it a shot.
I played Bionicle: The Game on a GBA emulator and i have to say, this is how NOT to do an isometric platformer. It's better than the console version, but that's not saying much.
I still have my Xbox 360 copy of Heroes :) Used to have the PS2 version from Launch as Bionicle was my life during 2004 to 2010, but I gave my PS2 copy to my friend who I still talk to... wish there was a PS3 version of this game :/
And oh god the Mata Nui Online game... so much Nostalgia and I now have it on my PC once again :)
And now it ended again and up to this day there is no constraction theme on the horizon, but I really hope that constraction will come back soon.

I actually got Tales of the Tohunga when it came out. I don't remember much about the game, other then being not really all too frustrated by anything. I guess I was somehow super-god at video games back then or something.

I'm hoping they make a game for the new sets, but I doubt it. I remember seeing that render of the Toa standing on that monument overlooking a jungle... it looks so fantastic, I'd love to walk through it especially considering the mini-movie art style doesn't really represent it that much. I'd like something that plays a bit like Bionicle Heroes, maybe more in the way of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron which made characters like Grimlock break the over-the-shoulder-third-person mold.
Maybe a Heroes-style game as a retail title and a MNOG-style game as a free online game. That'd be great.
Its already out free on google play and app store its a isemetric vies beatemup with no in app purchases and it has. nice 3d graphics for a app and its fun as hell

The DS version of Bionicle Heroes is more challenging than the console version, but solely because of the lack of Hero Mode and just the control scheme in general.

I've got a lot to say about this video so I'll divide it to separate parts.
One of my favourite browser Bionicle games was Inika Assault where you played as one of the Toa Inika and go through side scrolling levels to fight the Piraka. Kind of like Contra but with the 2006 characters. I never beat it because good god is it hard but it's still fun. Check it out.
I recently went back to Bionicle Heroes before your review came out and it's not as good as I remember it but after watching your review I'm considering picking it up again even if as a hardcore Bionicle fan I was always annoyed by the lack of story consistency. Where are the matron resistance? What are Vahki and Bohrock doing on Voya Nui? Why is Nihdiki, Krekka and Sidorak still alive? Where is Kardas? Why is Axonn evil? Yeah you get the point. I'm surprised you never mentioned the Piraka playground since that was one of the funniest parts of the game.
I'm super jealous of you and other 2001 fans for getting to experience the Mata Nui online game the way you did. I started Bionicle in 2004 so most of my story info came from chapter books my parents read to me, comics, and the movies. I almost wish I could erase my memory of Bionicle and it's whole story and experience the Mata Nui online game without any of the canon interrupting my enjoyment of it.
To see bionicle return and to imagine how many kids will get to be a part of this great series is such a great feeling to me. I'll be honest I thought Bionicle would never return. After all back in 2011 Lego never brought back old franchises. That was until Ninjago came back from it's yearlong hiatus that's when I suddenly realized that Bionicle coming back is a possibility and to see it happen is fantastic. I can't wait to see what Lego comes up with. Even if it's not as good as the original I can still go back to generation 1 and enjoy as much as I used to. Well for the most part.
Wow… I remember being obsessed with that franchise as a 7-year old, but I think I stopped paying attention the year after the Metru Nui return year. I don't remember what year that was, but I guess the stories were getting harder to understand and I was kind of interested in better things like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Zelda. I guess I grew out of the franchise… but I'm willing to play the original 2001 flash game again, since that's what got me hooked in the first place when I was little! Thank you for bringing back such nostalgia with this video. (First though, I have some Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet, Pokémon OR, and Smash Bros. to play after finals are over!)
most of these i couldn't play but knew about its existence via the catalog i got my hands on, I was kinda eager to find out about the "the game" but couldn't until much later i watched walkthroughs and reviews of it, and realized it wasn't as good as i was hoping. The first game i got to play was the MNOG but i could only do segments because for some reason or another i couldn't find the thing that would advance the plot, so just skip that chapter. Bionicle Heroes was really fun, though by the time i came across it, they weren't around in stores. and since my dad's laptop was killed by a virus i couldn't play it anymore.

I miss the original Bionicles they are so cool I remember when I was a kid my dad got me my first one during the time when Mask of Light which I'm guessing with Generation 1 was out it was one of Makutu's Sons I can't remember their names. From there on out I got so many yes I was a kid and took them apart then made my own but certainly they were cool as I look back upon all these old Bionicles now I want to be a kid again and start playing with all of them but sadly the originals are rare now when did that the hunt would be fun to recapture my childhood.

Heh. Despite going through all of your LP last year, I felt that wondrous nostalgia rush all over again during the section of this video covering MNOG. While I don't know where it would fall in my list of top games, I certainly feel it warrants such very high praise. It remains easily one of the most atmospheric games that I've ever played, as well as a phenomenal display of world building. and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Out of curiosity, how accessible is your story for those with limited knowledge of the series' lore? I stopped following the franchise during the year with the Visorak, but think I remember the gist of almost everything that came before.
Also, do you have any recommendations as far as methods of catching up on what I missed? I suppose there's always wikis, but I'd prefer something more meaningful and in-depth.

Well... there's a guy called Lord of Bionicle doing a retrospective of the old canon. He's just about done, if you wanna catch up.
My story is pretty far removed from the old canon, even taking place on a new planet. It has some old characters, like Macku, Kopeke, Taipu, and even Ahkmou, but it's like the Mega Man ZX of Bionicle. You don't need to know much about Mega Man Zero for Mega Man ZX to be a fun game... and you don't need to have played classic Mega Man for Mega Man Legends to be fun. Similarly, you don't need to get all of the references to the old canon to enjoy Nova Orbis. Those just make it even more enjoyable for oldschool fans.
MNOG 1 absolutely does hold up, I replayed a few years back and beat the whole thing in one sitting. MNOG 2 on the other hand I was cruelly, bitterly disappointed by, both as a kid and as an adult. I remember when it first launched on the official Bionicle website and it was literally unplayable due to how buggy and quite obviously unfinished it was. I'm talking things like areas not loading, NPC interactions not triggering, glitching out and being stuck on corners etc. and when I played it again after it was fixed many years later it was the very definition of boring. I lasted only a few minutes of wandering around doing chores and being forced to listen to droning exposition on things even the most casual of Bionicle fans should already know before calling it quits and never touching it again.

In Bionicle Heroes, what happens when you lose a Toa that is required to beat a level? So you have to find the mask in order to progress?
They usually supply another mask, nearby.
That doesn't sound bad at all. I was concerned that they might force you to restart the level in order to advance.

The game is currently being patch up the a group of Bionicle fans called the Beverhouse, which form a new development team called Litestone, to fix the game and make it a finish product. How do you unlock that Tahu cutscene on the beach? I always start off with my backpack and lightstone, rather than having to find them in Ga-Koro. Also, what are the key things on the menu?
It's in some builds of the game, and not others. It's screwy.
Thease were kind off like Lego's attempt at Transfomers with out the Transfoming part.....I mean like a wide rage off characters and word fantastic story telling....I mean even in hero factory we pretty much got he same thing.
I hust hope further down the track Bionicle comes back or Hasbro and Lego finally team up to make Lego Transfomers🤣🤟

I still have Bionicle Heroes, but the disc is scratched, I can't replay certain levels.
Yeah, I guess you could say I'm luckier, as I scratched the disk but the only effect was the background songs looping parts every so often.
